"Word of Mouth is Salem’s grand-millennial chic dining room cluttered with bric-a-brac that serves comically abundant brunch plates. Count on cinnamon roll pancakes the size of your face; planks of creme brulee French toast; big, beautiful biscuits swimming in gravy; and toasted burritos roughly the dimensions of a newborn. Pro tip: the ever-present waitlist at Word of Mouth tends to especially swell on Sunday morning, as area church services wind up. Check the restaurant’s waitlist online; sometimes small parties can skirt the list by sitting at the bar." - Emily Teel

Amazing little brunch bistro. They converted the front porch to be additional seating, so cute! We were helped by a ray of sunshine that offered a pinch of cinnamon in our coffee for luck and abundance. Excellent touch. Coffee to go at no extra cost? Superb. Seating is limited since this used to be a house back in the day.

The portions here are generous—definitely worth the price. I couldn’t even finish my sandwich! Everything was fresh and delicious—the salad was fresh, the bread was soft, and the sandwich was full of flavor. The service was friendly, though the wait for food on the weekend was longer than expected; it took about 30 minutes for our meals to arrive. Still, the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed—an ideal spot to enjoy brunch with friends.

FOOD WAS AMAZING! Bathroom even more amazing LOL We decided to go for the first time to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and it did not disappoint! The place is really popular which is why we decided to go so there was a bit of a wait time, which we were okay with. I would just keep that in mind when deciding to come in since there’s no way to reserve. Once we did get in our food came in a timely manner served by the friendliest staff! My bf loved it so much we decided to make it our go-to breakfast spot. I did include a video of the bathroom LOL but the bathroom is gorgeous. It really suits the place since the decor has so much personality. A perfect picture opportunity if you like that sort of thing :)

It’s been years since I’ve visited here. It is one of the greatest breakfasts houses in Salem. The food was as delicious as I remembered. The service was amazing. We had the kindest server. Also an Eagles fan. Go Birds! Everyone needs to experience this cozy little spot once Also they sell their home made jam. Yummmy! It is a 35-hour wait. In my opinion it’s most definitely worth the wait. Your tummy and taste buds will thank you

We went for the first time on a Weds, close to Noon. Wait was about 45 mins I think they said, but it seemed almost that long! We were seated with our kids in the very back by stairs, so not the best atmosphere but still some decor to look at on the wall. Menu is pricey. I have a couple other favored local breakfast spots, so probly won't return here unless it's just two of us, and we come earlier (just to give it another shot). I ordered the Ruben sandwich and it was good, but didn't replace my current fave Ruben elsewhere. The huge hot chocolates the kids got were a delicacy though! But their bacon was too thick and hard to chew.

Drove down from Portland. Very busy on a Thursday morning. Waited about 10 min for a seat at the bar. Got water and coffee right away. Waited another 10 to 15 min for our order to be taken. Waitresses were very attentive, always filling water and coffee. Portions were huge. Excellent food. Limited seating and parking.

Google
While in Salem Oregon, Word of Mouth was my go to breakfast spot. The boozy coffee, delicious omelets, and bacon keeps me coming back. The staff is wonderful and knowledgeable of the menu. Word of Mouth decor is fun and unique (the mirror bathroom). This spot is definitely a "get there early before they open" type of place. It gets extremely busy and the wait can be long. Parking can be challenging but the neighborhood is nice and street parking is available.

Google
My coworker and I had some spare time for breakfast and this looking promising! We got multiple items and even got a free item! Lissy our server did a fabulous job and was super attentive to all our needs. Be sure to be here when it opens early, we got here at 6:45 am (opening time) and were already 4th group in line!

Yelp
Great food. Never disappointed; favorite drink here is Bloody Mary; with the veggie garnish. Grand kids loved the pancakes and cinnamon rolls.

Yelp
A divine home converted into a cozy restaurant. A delicious menu with of breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Creative menu all completely delicious. Generous portions, delicious biscuits, hash, eggs etc. don't even get me started on the staff. EVERYONE welcoming, friendly, engaging and on point with service. A new favorite spot. You will leave with full bellies and hearts. What a gem.

Yelp
The best things come to those who wait...over an hour, though! It was a tough choice on a Saturday morning, whether they put my name on the list or try somewhere else. I stayed...! When I finally got seated, I got a seat at the counter since it was just me. I ordered the eggs, potatoes, and toast breakfast. The eggs were good, but the smashed Yukon potatoes stole the show! They were crumbly and crispy and perfectly seasoned. (They were so good that we have replicated them at home! ) the roast is homemade and also a highlight of the plate. I also got a cinnamon roll pancake (for dessert). it was soooooo delicious - tasted just like a cinnamon roll! I would suggest being the icing on the side, though, because several bites in, I found it too sweet.

Nola M.

Yelp
Lovely restaurant is located in an old house. The menu has so many decadent pieces, that my blood pressure and cholesterol increased just by reading it. The waitresses are darn right, jolly and helpful despite having a huge and never ending workload. For sure, we will return here

Shamara M.

Yelp
I was visiting my best friend and she took me to this place, so glad she did! We went on a Friday morning, we waited for about 40 minutes to get a table, the place is cozy since it's literally a house converted into a restaurant. We ordered 2 mimosas, mine had Vodka (can't remember the name). I ordered the Pot Roast Eggs Benedict cause I'm obsessed with eggs Benedict! It was very good and it came with 3 eggs, it's usually 2 so I had leftovers. My friend had the Incredible Flying Biscuit, it was HUGE and also delicious. Our waitress was attentive and so nice that she even brought us a cookie (my favorite sweet), that made my day.

Beatriz P.

Yelp
It was my first time coming here today. It was good breakfast/brunch place. When we arrived the person seating the guests, seated a couple that had just arrived after we were there for roughly 10-15 minutes and it included the same number of guests that we had. Not a huge deal for me but very unfair. When we got seated, our server seemed very nice. However she wasn't very attentive. The girl with the bright pink jacket was amazing. Whenever she would walk by, we would stop her and ask her for help. She was super sweet. Overall the food was amazing, but I do wish I had some more potatoes.

Yelp
Omgoodness! This place is amazing! No wonder why its so hard to get into! The French toast is oooh! Scrumdelioutious! Large portions, amazing drinks, and wonderful staff! Can't wait to go back

Rima Z.

Yelp
Oh Yummers. Great cottage feel with eclectic decorating style. Friendly staff -Kelly was a great server - snappy patter and terrific service. Although the place was crowded, wait time to be seated and served was minimal. Food was delicious. A complimentary crème brûlée French toast? Yes please! Soft delicate interior (warning - hot!) and crackle sugar crust exterior. Lived up to the name - well done! Coffee was hot; I prefer espresso drinks, but this was good. Pot roast hash evoked pot roast memories, including the accompanying gravy. Eggs were fluffy and well seasoned. Unfortunately the biscuit was dry; however my sister's sunflower toast was really good. The homemade lemon curd had great flavor; a tad runnier than I'm used to. The strawberry jam was really good. Definitely worth the stop - I'd come back!

Heather J.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing... our waitress was outgoing and so helpful.. Kelly I believe.. we had to have the French toast. I did the French toast with hash delicious. My friend did the French toast meal and then they brought us the amazing pancake to try so we could compare, definitely going back.

Paul M.

Yelp
Still an amazing spot for breakfast! Located in a cute craftsman style house. Service is friendly (like eating at someone's house) and food is amazing so it is no wonder this place is always packed. Got the cinnamon roll pancakes this time and loved them. Their bacon is super Thick and high quality. Can't wait for my travels to take me back to Salem, OR again to come back!

Anthony C.

Yelp
Really great place, especially brunch, but I think you'd enjoy it at any time of the day really. The portions are huge for what you pay, but worth it! I ordered the biscuits and gravy and man these biscuits worth thick and they give you about four of them being two pieces cut and a half and I also ordered sausage on the side with some egg and man. I could not finish this and I can eat... French toast crème brûlée style so that was a little bit interesting but very delicious and I couldn't choose what I wanted beforehand because they all sounded so yummy. I'll definitely be stopping by here again and I should mention the staff is very communicative and friendly.

Christopher P.

Yelp
I'm giving this 5 stars. I give out a lot of 5 star reviews but I'm trying to more judicious. If the food, service and ambiance are all good but not necessarily great then I would give 5 stars. I'm now baselining to 4 stars for that performance and asking myself - what was truly exceptional? What would be SIX stars? At Word Of Mouth I had the cinnamon swirl pancakes with a side of bacon and that was certainly worth six stars! And a nap :) We also had the vanilla custard crème brûlée French Toast (also amazing) and the Bacon avocado omelette. The wait time was 2 hours! But they said they'd give us a 10 minute warning and you can check your place online so we went out and ran errands. Amazing food!

Katharine L.

Yelp
Always crowded, but always good! We were only in town to see family for three days- so this is where we had breakfast all three! I think we have been helped by most of the waitstaff, and they are all great! I recommend their spicy chai' it's sooo good!

Joe J.

Yelp
This has the best breakfast i have ever had! It's absolutely unbelievable!!! I highly recommend it!

Kamaya A.

Yelp
6:45am... packed as expected for such a great meal. I had time to observe the wall art in the environment and get a good laugh from some of the sayings. great little spot- delicious food.the gravy was not too potent and an awesome add on to my meal (as it is to any). Sam was our awesome waiter. will be going again. ranging more towards $17-$22 a plate.

Michael P.

Yelp
Been here twice now, both times have been a wait and worth while. This is small establishment but the food is scratch and fresh. The owner is present and available and loves to talk with patrons. The biscuits and gravy are amazing and huge. You can get one biscuit smothered in gravy and the other with their homemade freezer jam. Can't go wrong. The pancakes and French toasts all have amazing flavors. You can get a sugar rush here but there are plenty of savory options and great daily specials.

Allison Y.

Yelp
How does a restaurant have a 40 minute wait time on a Monday at 11am? Word of Mouth, that's how. Rarely would I stick around to wait at such a sleepy hour, but I'm glad I did. First things first is that you have to order the cinnamon roll pancake. Even if you're getting other dishes, get a single pancake as a side. I don't know what they put that in pancake, but I could not stop eating this. I even bonded with a few other people in the line for the bathroom about how good it was--one guy said he felt like an animal devouring it with his hands. The Woodstock burrito was chock-full of veggies, and I'm particularly a sucker for broccoli in breakfast scrambles or dishes. Not many restaurants do that, but Word of Mouth does and has thus won my heart. The asparagus and Brie omelette was also excellent--generous portions of both the green and the cheese. I loved the homemade strawberry jam as well. Our server was very friendly, and the walls were decorated in custom WOM dog pictures and quirky quotes and posters. Super fun atmosphere! The total for our meal came to $49 before tip, which is not super cheap, but it was worth it. I'll definitely be back if I'm ever in Salem again.

Valeria R.

Yelp
Incredibly delicious breakfast as well as service. Super creative and cozy environment. 10/10 recommend

Sidnee B.

Yelp
Love eating here!! Definitely get what you pay for and I always leave with leftovers for lunch . Super sweet that they also do random acts of kindness where random customers get a free item from the kitchen !

Jamee H.

Yelp
This place was excellent Small spot and expect to wait Totally Worth it! The food was absolutely delish.

Abby J.

Yelp
Food was amazing. I got the pot roast eggs Benedict and the crème brûlée French toast. I specifically came for the French toast and I can understand why. The service was great and it was definitely a homey feeling. It's like out of a "house" and you can tell they put a "Sazón" in their food. Which means it has flavor. Highly recommend this place.

Jason R.

Yelp
Word Of Mouth (WOM) never fails to amaze us. This time we sat at the bar, didn't have to wait long for seats, which was awesome. Absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. Couldn't be any better than home cooked food in an actual old house, just perfect. This morning we both drinks to go with our meal and it just topped it off. If you've never been and are looking for some good home cooked food, be prepared to be amazed and definitely bring your appetite because these aren't small portions... I highly recommend Word Of Mouth to anyone and everyone...

Jennifer R.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast/brunch place in Salem. Their Filet Mignon chicken fried steak is the absolute best I've ever had. That gravy!! Oh my!! Also, their Crème Brûlée French toast is decadent. They have really good thick bacon as well. The only thing I'm not a fan of is their chicken sausage patties but some people love them. They have amazing hashes too. And great coffee and hot chocolate. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. There is always a long wait, but they are one of the few places where you can get their order to go and it's just as good as if you ate inside, minus the really long wait. They are located in a cute Victorian house with cute little things on the walls. It's very charming. Women, you must visit their bathroom. The service is always outstanding and friendly. The only downside to this restaurant is there very limited parking.

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice breakfast at Word of Mouth recently with my coworkers. I got quite a few recommendations to eat here from both my coworkers and some locals and it did not disappoint. Went on a Monday right before the lunch rush and got seated pretty quickly. Staff were very friendly and had great hospitality. Our server recommended the mushroom gravy which had fresh mushrooms that were foraged by one of the staff members. I ended up ordering the chicken fried chicken with the mushroom gravy. It was sooo delicious. The portions are huge and could definitely be shared with one another. Next time I visit Salem for work, I'll definitely be back.

Terrence M.

Yelp
Order: Flying Biscuit w/ salem sunrise mimosa Pros: the food was great. It just needed a little salt and pepper. Def. An experience you should try. Cons: the wait the wait the wait! It took us 1.5 hours to be seated (party of 2). It seems more business is turned away because they're unable to accommodate large amounts of ppl.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Cute little house is a cute little brunch place! Small always busy small parking lot. Worth the wait I love the crème brûlée French toast!

Vic K.

Yelp
I have worked down the street from this establishment for over 13 years. My wife and I are really not breakfast type of people. All I hear is that this is the place to go and there generally is a wait to get a table, BUT it's well worth the wait. So, today we decided let's give it a try. When we arrived, parking was a little difficult, so we parked along the curb (2 hour parking). As we walked up to Word of Mouth Bistro it is a house that had been converted over to a restaurant. The waiting area is a covered enclosed porch. Once inside, it gives you that welcome home comfortable feeling. On the walls had some pictures, signs hanging that you'd find at grandmas house or a close friends. Very relaxing, welcoming, and friendly. The wait staff made you feel like you were a part of their family. The other guests were returning guests, so we explained that it was our first time. They reiterated the wait is well worth it. "Great food!," is the statement we repeatedly heard. I ordered the chicken fried steak which came with 2 eggs, Yukon smashed pan fried potatoes, and a biscuit which I had smothered in the same gravy as the chicken fried steak. The gravy! Oh the gravy, was AMAZING! The best country gravy hands down from anywhere in Oregon. Buttery, peppery, with a smooth taste and the sausage. The chicken fried steak was the size of the plate. I am not over exaggerating as you can see in the photo. The biscuits were thick, tasty, and buttery as well. They were not dense and chewy. Again, the best buns it's hands down. Had enough for left overs later in the day, which I reheated and still had the same great taste. My wife had a build your own omelette (3 eggs) with ham, mushrooms, bell peppers and tomatoes and a side of Yukon gold smashed pan fried potatoes. She was able to finish her meal. It was fluffy, thick and full of fresh great flavor and taste. Definitely an establishment we would go back to. This is a highly recommended place. If you're from out of town or local definitely give it a try and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
If you're willing to wait at least an hour to get seated this place is for you. Parking is very limited and so is seating for those waiting. The entryway is cramped, add some outside seating for patrons to wait. Service was terrible. Our waitress had a poor attitude which was frustrating, she seemed annoyed that we only wanted water or "life" as she called it. The food was delicious so I get the demand to eat here. My group was 4 ppl, (2 adults, 2 kids under 6). I was quoted 50 minutes for a wait. I called when an hour passed (we'd gone and returned from a park to pass time) and was told they didn't know and I hadn't been waiting long past my quoted time. 5 min later I got a text our table was ready. Came in, but had to wait another 10minutes with 2 now very hungry kids. In total we waited 1 hr and 15mins to get seated. What really upset me was the table that got seated after us and the table next to us both were given complimentary cake/bread and nothing for my kids and I as we waited for our food. Although the food is really good, the service was terrible enough to not return.

Theresa S.

Yelp
Excellent service, the waitress was fun and engaging. The food was fresh and delicious. The gluten free bread I had was incredible. Definitely one of the best breakfast meals I have experienced! Will return.

Marit G.

Yelp
It was our second time here, the first time being pre-Covid. We are so glad it is still around (I follow them on social media and had seen it closed, and then re-opened)!! We live about 45 mins away. Always worth the drive. Always worth the wait. The gravy. The bacon. The crème brûlée French toast. The dog decor. The staff. Everything. Sitting at the bar is the best. We will be back soon!!!

Ariel S.

Yelp
This place has changed since Covid but mostly for the better. Still always a line to get in but for good reason. The ambiance and menu has changed. But the food is really good! Our server was so sweet and got us a cinnamon roll because we told her we had never tried it. The service was amazing and it food and Bloody Mary was great! Highly recommend this spot if your looking for a great breakfast experience.

Frank L.

Yelp
Biscuits and Gravy were disgusting, bacon was floppy, eggs ordered over easy and came out with zero yolk. Waitress was loud and annoying. $40 for nasty food was an insult. I didn't like the receipt having suggested tip amounts of 20% 25% 30%, pretty bold!!! A guest at a table next to us sent back their plate and as the waitress was returning her new order to her table she told another gal, "I'll takes it, she probably has 19 more complaints." That's not an acceptable way to talk about your guest within earshot of other guests.

C B.

Yelp
Best food ever- so delicious! Large portions, no one leave hungry, good coffee, so many options.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
WARNING,, food coma may occur. I don't even know where to begin. I suppose I will start with why I am in a food coma fading quickly. I ordered the chicken fried steak, which was topped with the most delicious cream gravy, a side of fried potatoes, two eggs cooked the way you like and a biscuit that came with what seem to be freshly made strawberry jam. Needless to stay I almost ate the entire plate. The port was very large. I could have shared with someone else with a group of four on a Monday afternoon around 1245 There was not a wait, but the food took a little while to come out, well worth the wait.

Stephanie Lynne S.

Yelp
Wow. Okay, so I decided to go at 7:05am and I got the last spot. Evidently, there is a line out the door before it even opens! So charming, so much food, and great service, in a cozy house. Worth the wait. Just get your name down and wait. You won't be sorry! P.S. They had gluten free bread that was awesome. So hard to find!

Rei T.

Yelp
Was a very busy Saturday morning at 7:30 am. The service was great and fast! The staff is friendly and helpful. The food was great! Will come back if we are in the area. Breakfast sausage patties were excellent. The atmosphere was a nice family feel. Didn't look like a good place for large groups over 4 people.

Constantine J.

Yelp
We added a Salem stop to our trek out to Detroit Lake just to try Word of Mouth Neighborhood Bistro. It has a number of high reviews talking about their unique dishes so we had to come try it out. The restaurant is in a cute little building but it is FREEZING. Not sure if their heater wasn't working the day we visited (12/24/22) but we had to keep our coats on the entire time. Our waitress was very kind and provided great service. Prices are a bit high for a single dish but well worth it for the tasty/unique Creme Brulee French Toast - never had anything like that before. It was like sinking your teeth into a cloud, so fluffy and so delicious. We loved trying something so different. We are looking forward to trying additional dishes on our next visit.

Greg H.

Yelp
This is a little hidden treasure in Salem. The food was homemade and awesome. Our waitress Nichole made our day with her humor and table side manner. If you don't mind a little wait (and it's worth it). You'll love the food and experience. We passed up several big chain restaurants to discover this place and are glad we did. Don't tell your friends.. It'll get to crowded.

Amberly S.

Yelp
The parking is really awful. The lot only holds about 8 cars and the spaces are very small. There were so many flies inside, it was really nasty. I kept swatting them away and I'm talking like 10+ flies. But I heard this place had really great food so I wanted to try it but, I ended up not liking the food either and for the first time in my life sent food back. So... idk what is going on here. My waitress was nice but, the other waitress seemed angry.

Nayeli C.

Yelp
About an hour and a half wait time but the food was definitely worth it. The customer service, however, was disappointing. The restaurant is cute and "homey."

Shannon M.

Yelp
The best meal I've had at a restaurant in a long time. Visiting from out of town and found Word of Mouth on Yelp. I can't say enough good things about this place. The staff is excellent, the food is excellent, the entire experience was excellent!!! We started with a "happy appi" of homemade biscuits with fresh blackberries and sweet cream. It was to die for. I had the Flying Biscuit with fried chicken, fried eggs, bacon, cheese, and gravy. It also came with smashed potatoes. My husband had the filet mignon chicken fried steak. Can't go wrong with either. We shared the crème brûlée French toast for "dessert." Also amazing! Run, don't walk to this place!

Thomas R.

Yelp
If you're looking for a trendy craphole with rude service this is the place for you. If you want real food with good wait staff and good food go to Elmer's restaurant. I walk into the crowded foyer/wait room which is tiny and packed. Completely ignored by the staff for a few minutes. I go to pee, come back. A couple comes in, steps in front of me the waitress immediately comes up to them and gives them my spot at the bar. So I get annoyed and I go to leave the waitress follows me out the door and yells at me "we serve the people who were here first" wow. Got me f'd up lady. I went to Elmer's the waitress checked me in right away, sat me down like 30 seconds later at an actual booth.

Jared B.

Yelp
Have been here a few times, but will not return after last experience. Came in on a Tuesday morning, waited 20 minutes to be seated. Ordered promptly and waited 30 minutes for a breakfast burrito. No apology from the sever for the wait... when I asked about the order she said she would check and can back and said "it's been 24 minutes, should be another 5-7" and walked off. For a casual dining spot with Mid food this is just nuts. My guess is that they get so much business that customer service isn't a priority.

Long N.

Yelp
Delicious food! Great huge portions, everything made in house. Service was great. Quick, easy, nice. Tight space but super busy. Waited for brunch on a Saturday for an hour before seated. Worth the wait. Evrything was delicious. Highly recommend any of the huge mimosas. We will definitely be back! Happy eating!

Miranda K.

Yelp
Best breakfast i've had in a while. The biscuits and gravy were classic & delicious. We also ordered a cinnamon roll pancake, which was so good as well. Our server, Sam, was an absolute sweetheart. Perfect place to stop for food

Ross J.

Yelp
Fantastic experience at this restaurant. The service was great. The waiting area is a little cramped but the food makes up for the wait. The cinnamon role pancakes are a must.

Shelly L.

Yelp
Such a great experience!! We were able to get seated right away and the server came up to us immediately. She was quite bubbly and theatrical in her approach but it made the experience quite unique. Food was great and the coffee was awesome. Hard to find a good cup of drip coffee these days. We will definitely be back.

Sadie A.

Yelp
There's a reason this on the most highly rated place in Salem!! We LOVED just about everything we got. The yacht club sandwich was a great sandwich with bacon crisped to perfection, the perfect wetness with the dressing, and perfect sourdough bread. We got a side of bacon and it truly was a highlight of the meal, so thick, so crisp. YUM. also got a side of biscuits and gravy, it was TONS of food and delicious. 10/10 recommend you go if you're in Salem! We got take out because the wait was over an hour and was still soooo delicious!!!

Brian K.

Yelp
The absolute best food! Spendy, sure. But I know you're worth it! Try the Corned Beef and Hash with .... Carmelized Cabbage! The meat was tender and perfectly seasoned. Potato's nicely grilled. But the carmelized cabbage, oh the cabbage, slightly browned and translucent yet a little crispy and naturally sweet. Boom! Wahoo! Cowabunga!!! You get the idea. I live an hour away, but anytime I'm passing by on I-5, I make the necessary, no mandatory, detour to spoil myself and treat my palate. Definitely eat here. You'll thank me and possibly praise my my humble recommendation. ENJOY!
