Barbecue Chain Wood Ranch Goes Even More Casual With Next Restaurant - Eater LA

"The folks behind Wood Ranch BBQ and Grill are opening up a new side hustle to be called WR Kitchen & Bar. The inaugural location lands later this spring in Laguna Niguel, with more locations to come in Carlsbad and beyond. The idea is to scale down to an even more casual experience, while keeping a wood-fired oven in the open kitchen and focusing on dishes like tri-tip, ribs, salads, and other staples like craft beer. They’ll also do delivery, which can sometimes be a rarity for chains like this that operate at scale." - Farley Elliott

PERFECT date spot! Gorgeous decor, friendly staff, quick service and delicious food. Please note, the menu is a bit limited compared to traditional Wood Ranch locations, absolutely delicious nonetheless! Please don't forget to the Blackberry-POM Martini- perfect summer drink !

We decided to do a work team lunch and chose WR on Greenfield close to the office. We arrived just before noon and were seated immediately in the outdoor covered patio area. A perfect 70 degrees pleasant atmosphere. Between the 5 of us we ordered Natalie's Salad add tri-tip, WR tri-tip, Ethan's Brisket Sandwich, BBQ Chopped Salad add tri-tip, and the 10 oz. tri-tip. the various sides included sweet potato fries, fries, and cauliflower. Everything was so tasty. We decided to share the Warm Butter Cake to finish it off, and what a great choice that was. A couple of bites each was a great way to finish the lunch. Our server was attentive to the drink refills and the meals came quickly. All-around, it was a great dining experience.

Google
Casual dining with big BBQ flavors! Super friendly team from greeter to manager. Full rack of ribs were requested to be served naked with sauce on the side which led to a tender but crispy outside. Brisket street tacos were incredibly flavorful and juicy. Generous portions and good value.

Google
Sierra was very friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, the bathrooms were clean, and the atmosphere was a fun western! The pulled pork was cooked to perfection and the rolls+mac n cheese came in the cutest skillets. This restaurant is more of an upscale casual, the staff is dressed well but you won’t feel out of place wearing jeans. Looking forward to another trip here!

Google
The food has good flavor and the servers are nice. The rolls are pretty good and have a buttery flavor. I ordered the BBQ Chopped Salad with tri tip and subbed romaine lettuce instead of mixed greens. It was tasty! The sauce on the tender tri tip was great and mixed well with the ranch dressing. The other ingredients were sparse though aside from lettuce and dressing. My colleague ordered BBQ Chopped Salad with chicken and cleaned his plate so it must have been good. Check out the pictures. We went during an off peak time so it was a bit quiet inside. The outdoor patio seating looks fun for a summer day and they also have heaters outside in case it gets cold. It’s also well shaded. This is a local place that I haven’t visited very often but I’ll definitely go back to try some other items.

Google
Love this place. Been getting the brisket and the tri-tip, both delicious. Sides are great, and they give you warm garlic bread when you sit down. Good beer selection, what more could you ask for? This has become one of my go to spots in Laguna Niguel. Try the crispy shredded onion and Natalie's Salad with tri-tip.

Google
The brisket sandwich flavor was too smokey tasting did not like, and bbq sauce was spicy hot. Western Tri tip sandwich was way too smokey also, tasted like fake smoke flavor. Will never order those again.

Google
Unfortunately their particular restaurant’s quality is going down. They eliminated broccoli roasted or steam even though pictures clearly show on the menu. You don’t have choice of dressing on the side options as many other restaurants do.

Yelp
Good: inside atmosphere & service Not so good: food & price for the quality. I got the ribs w/ the corn & coleslaw, my husband got the burger w/ fries. I got the old fashioned and he got the berry smash. Ribs: 3.5/5- not very tender, a little small for the cost and over all meh. Corn: 5/5 I got without feta but the corn was still really great Coleslaw: 4/5 didn't seem super fresh, was pretty good though The is fashioned was interesting they used cherry bitters, it wasn't my favorite left a strange taste in my mouth that lasted all night. Husband said the burger was fine, the fries were also fine

Yelp
Wood Ranch's smaller restaurant & streamlined menu. We had a great burger & salad for lunch on a weekday. Service was good & ambiance is nice. Big bar & great large patio too.

Yelp
Tonight, we enjoyed a meal at the WR bar instead of the dining area. The bartender was friendly and kept our drinks filled and got our food orders timely. We started with our drinks (nice IPA selection) and some of the complimentary garlic rolls - soft, hot and yummy. Then for our mains we had the double cheeseburger with the mac and cheese on the side. This is a good burger - nothing fancy but good flavors (especially with the grilled onions). The bartender suggested a little sauce, so on one half I used some of their house BBQ sauce and the other half with some Thousand Island. The TI was less sweet and paired better with the burger. That was a helpful suggestion from the bartender. The side of mac was great. We also tried the two meat plate with the ribs (good) and the tri tip (very good) and for the sides: the mashed potatoes (terrific) and the roasted cauliflower (I'm not a huge cauliflower fan, but I liked this). Overall good experience and we will be back.

Yelp
I've been here a handful of times the past few months and I had no clue how good this location was! I like it even better than the original wood ranch?! The service has always been top notch, the food always comes out fresh and cooked to perfection. The restaurant is very clean and newly renovated. The outdoor patio is dog friendly, heated, and nicely covered. They have a great happy hour as well! I prefer this location out of all the others! Definitely my favorite spot at the moment

Yelp
I am writing this review because, my people received awesome service by our Waitress/Bartender?Emily(i hope that's her name because that what was on my receipt) and by Tatum. Now normally I skip this place because the two times we came here before it was a underwhelming experience. Service was slow, food coming out cold, after our server disappeared and having to ask the nearest server can you check on either our food or server also sides missing. But my people wanted BBQ and it's been about 2years since those experiences. So we sit at the bar order 2 drinks and food. The menu has totally slim down, I wish the had sliders, but the recommendations we got from Tatum and Emily were spot on. College Basketball was on the TV. The Food was hot and Emily was very attentive to us.My people were happy and so was I This was a very different experience and I hope it becomes the norm. Sidenote* this was during the week so weekend might be much different. The western sandwich toss with BBQ sauce and get the mashed potatoes skip the fries. Also Emily makes a NICE Vodka Cranberry! See yall in two weeks when I get paid. I would love a coupon to come back sooner. But if not payday it is.

Yelp
I have been going to Wood Ranch for years. They can be a little inconsistent but generally it is one of my favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, my first visit to WR Kitchen was a disappointment. The garlic rolls were not fresh, the Tri tip was dry and overcooked, and the baby back ribs were average at best. The only item we enjoyed was the side salad. It was fresh and plentiful. Service was fine but definitely did not make up for the disappointing food.
google avatar

Terence L.

Yelp
Tatum recommended the ribs and it did not disappoint. No words can describe it. Just try for yourselves. Excellent food along with excellent service.

Yelp
i always sit at the bar & get great service & delicious food. but i must say i can't help but have a big smile when Serra is my bartender; she takes such great care of me, remembering my order to a t & making sure i have everything i need. the difference between having Serra there vs. not is just that i have to ask for the item or two i might need vs. Serra literally remembering every exact thing i want. it's not a lot, habanero bbq & some bread to go but when she's there, everything is just so easy. she's sweet & competent & i've overheard her remember other guests orders as well. thank you WR & thank you Serra for being outstanding! i always get the bbq baby back ribs w roasted broccoli & a side of habanero bbq & it's SO. GOOD. house garlic bread is addictive & stellar.

Yelp
Started with a half order of Caesar salad with "eggless" Caesar dressing. Very large portion, probably over dressed but just too tart for me. Carolina Pulled Pork Menu says certified sustainably farmed, antibiotic and hormone free! That's probably true because the pork is definitely on the dry side and unless mixed with the pepper sauce, is quite difficult to put down. Entrees come with two sides - I chose skillet baked beans (sweet) and somewhat plain mashed potatoes. Portions are also large and it's a lot to eat so come here hungry. They have a nice long drink menu with micro craft and beers on tap. That's all.

Yelp
WR kitchen seems to be owned by Woodranch BBQ. I have never been to Woodranch, but this seems like it is an attempt at a slightly more upscale version of that. We went on a Saturday evening around 5:45pm or so and we were seated immediately, which was just before business here really started to pick up. The staff here was incredibly friendly and I would give the service a 4.5/5 stars. It was almost perfection even with all the tables that got seated after us, which is pretty impressive. Ambiance wise I would compare it to maybe a step above Chili's but a step below BJs or Yardhouse. Very family friendly and relaxed. For an appetizer we got the wings and they were the perfect crisper texture I love. Definitely the best thing we had in my opinion. My husband really loves the brisket tacos! It was his second time getting them and he was so happy. I got a chicken sandwich and it was the perfect crispness as well, but just lacked flavor entirely. It has a slaw on it and jalapeños so it should in theory have some acid and freshness and spice, but none of that comes through. The mashed potatoes were pretty decent. I left pretty underwhelmed by the food, but my husband was happy so bonus points for that. If I could rate it 3.5 stars overall I probably would!

Yelp
Love this place! We are constantly picking up family meals from here. We love the tri tip, ribs, mashed potatoes, garlic cauliflower, and get our child the kids chicken. Pretty solid and consistent! Always ready when quoted. One of our favorite local spots for BBQ!

Yelp
Stopped by here as it was convenient to where we were at. The menu seemed almost the same as a normal Wood Ranch BBQ restaurant but they had a special skinny margarita. The bar area at this location is really nice and has multiple TVs to watch the game. I tried the pulled pork tacos in a lettuce wrap which I enjoyed. The pineapple habanero salsa had good flavor and definitely has a kick to it!

Mina T.

Yelp
Love the food. The BBQ was great and delicious. We enjoyed the ambience as well. Overall, it was a great place to go hand out with friends and have some great American style food
google avatar

Elisa G.

Yelp
Five stars for Cook who answered the phone when I had to ask special needs questions. I love the way they package the delivery! I'm excited to eat my chicken and salmon and cauliflower and brussels sprouts.

Yelp
had the worst lunch ive ever experienced as an appentizer ordered the spinach artichoke dip very unappitizing to say the least for luch ordered to smoked brisquit sandwiches very dry no bbq sauce no cheese very dry only good thing was the garlic rolls and the staff very attentive and friendly and courteous A for effort
google avatar

Yelp
A very relaxed, beautiful ambiance with kind and attentive staff which is always key. I stopped by and enjoyed some of the best sweet potato fries and I have no doubt that the entrees would be just as good. Will definitely bring a girl here if I ever get one lol

Yelp
Our very first time eating at the restaurant. Love how the Lay out of the restaurant was so open. Very clean and efficient and Very welcoming and the service was Excellent. On top of that the food was Amazing. By the way come and enjoy during Happy Hour. Totally worth your time here. Counts us in for coming back for more

Yelp
Came in for lunch on Saturday and was not disappointed. We sat at the bar and had great service. The menu is somewhat limited but the food was great. I went with some wings and ribs for my main. I asked for the wings extra crispy (as they always should be) and they didn't disappoint. We also got an order of fries that were surprisingly tasty. The ribs were standard and delicious. I'd say a tier above chilis and other chain restaurants ribs. Plenty of space to eat and a good amount of TVs if you wanna belly up to the bar and have a few. Our bartender said the other restaurants have a larger menu so they may be worth checking out if your near one.

Yelp
I have to update this because I was pleasantly surprised this time around! Amazing service. Really, really good service. Good food too, and it came out quickly. The bbq chicken breast plate was cooked nicely and came with two large chicken breasts. I could've easily shared this. The mashed potatoes, roasted broccoli, and brussel sprouts were good too. The loaded Brussels sprouts were definitely the best of the above sides, but all were tasty. The bread rolls were also warm and flavorful, and are complimentary if you dine in. Even if you're full, which you will be, don't skip on dessert! The butter cake is warm and cream cheese stuffed with ice cream on top...and there is nothing bad about that combination. The only downside was that the bbq sauce was a little watered down and could be better, but other than that I'd definitely come back.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings because I love their corn. It's maybe the best corn out there? Spicy, with green onions and cotija (?) cheese. The rest of the food can be hit or miss. Sometimes the ribs are very good, and sometimes they are very dry. Tri tip can also be tough, especially since you can't have it prepared rare. And they're a little stingy on the BBQ sauce. The rolls are good and the same you would get at Woodranch. I will of course come back for the corn but it is expensive. Two sandwiches and a side can add up to $50.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
On the positive side, our server was very attentive and the ambiance was conducive for conversations with the others in my party. The complimentary bread rolls were warm and quite tasty. I found the prices to be reasonable and the portions plentiful. Finally, my Old Fashioned cocktail was well-made. The quality and preparation of the main course is the most important factor in my dining experiences and it is here that my meal was lacking. The half-chicken entree was over-cooked and dry and the mashed potatoes were heavy and not flavorful. I know that some people like food prepared this way. I, however, do not. Moist chicken and creamy, flavorful mashed potatoes are not difficulty to prepare. I encourage WR Laguna Niguel to consider such changes in how these foods are prepared.

Yelp
I was craving BBQ. There aren't too many options in this area and I didn't want to drive far. I looked at the reviews and was very skeptical since feedback was mixed. I went for it anyway to give it a try. Surprisingly, my expectations were incorrect. I got the 8 piece baby back ribs. You could tell it was freshly grilled with some of the crispy outer layer. The meat was tender and juicy. The BBQ sauces aren't the best but they are fine. I also got the mac and cheese (sauce was too gluey and needs to be more wet) and peanut coleslaw (not sure why peanuts are in this, cole slaw was fresh and not too sweet/vinegary). I was pleased with my order and will be back when I am hankering for more ribs. I ordered online and had to wait 30 minutes. Parking is no problem at all.

Yelp
Everything was very tasty, great service and we loved the very modern style of this restaurant. My husband & I both ordered the BBQ Chicken dinner and it hit spot, so tender and delicious!!
google avatar

Dorris T.

Yelp
Had a great lunch today. Serra was our server and she was so efficient and took care of us right away. The tacos were delish. I had the cauliflower tacos in the butter lettuce wrapped and my husband had the salmon tacos. Both tacos were so great and the 3 street taco sized tacos were just enough. It also came with chips and salsa. I highly recommend you ask for for green sauce on the side. It is like a cilantro green sauce. Taste great on the chips. Or even pour some on the tacos. Really good.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a salmon salad and it was tasty. Me and Bob S really enjoyed it her. The service was great also.

Yelp
This place is so fun and such good ambiance!! Such a nice spot to grab a couple of drinks and some good BBQ food. Their ribs are so so good and the service is always good!! I love this place!
google avatar

Kenneth G.

Yelp
How are you going to offer a happy hour with 2 dollars off wine Then for a glass of Pino Grigio or Cabernet you request the 9 oz - what's the hold up it's the holidays Until you see that the wine glasses(at happy hour) cost 42$ between the two -ouch Add street tacos 4 bucks for two bite tacos your tab is rolling into the 60 fun zone Can you say - but the service was outstanding and the ambience was mesmerizing-no it was average
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing staff all so friendly. I didn't have to look at my phone to order!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That alone, would be bringing me back. But the food was amazing. My husband Sid the brisket was the best he thinks he has had. And he is a bBQ grilled guy. Super tender and tasty. The ribs were great and so was the chicken. The taste of the ice tea was good. I had a salad and loved their balsamic vinegarette. The waitress got us boxes and offered us dressing to go. This place was so worth the visit.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Came in tonight with a friend and it was a great experience. We sat in the patio which was very nice and beautifully decorated. They offered to turn on heaters as well. We had a great server, Kook who was attentive and courteous throughout the meal. We ordered two salads, each fresh and delicious. The side of mac and cheese and the garlic cauliflower stood out as a great side dish as well. Overall, great experience. Will be coming back soon!

Yelp
Last night (Saturday around 7:30) there was no wait although the restaurant was still busy. Our food arrived quickly after we ordered, which was a very pleasant surprise. One thing I loved was that a manager walked by, saw that we were looking for a server and assisted us immediately. I have been to plenty of restaurants where management is just buzzing around without really paying attention to seated guests. The food here is consistently delicious. (Even the fries and garlic rolls.) Some favorites to check out: Natalie's Salad Shishito Peppers Roasted Cauliflower Spinach & Artichoke Dip Tri Tip Sandwich Cauliflower Tacos They also have a great variety of good Bourbon and make a great Old Fashioned if you're in the mood. Great for lunch or dinner!

Lily P.

Yelp
Really great environment and food is usually good, every time I've gone the servers aren't very friendly and it's hit or miss with the steak tacos. I've gotten the same thing (carne asada soft tacos) 3 times and 2 of those times, most of the meat was the fat of the steak and not even 1/4 meat lol. It's likely k won't be returning here anytime soon.

Stacie V.

Yelp
We couldn't have asked for a better experience, especially because of our server, Hailey! She anticipated our needs in every aspect -- from giving us appropriate time to assess the menu & order, to bringing multiple silverware for shared dishes, and an overall happy disposition the entire time. Our meal was delicious & we look forward to returning!!
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
Been here a few times and always good. It was especially good because our server, Sean, was amazing! He was very on top of everything, he was great with remembering what had dairy for my friend too. The place was packed but still got our food very quickly and sat down fast. Highly recommend; thanks again Sean!
google avatar

Lane S.

Yelp
I ordered the Carolina Pulled Pork and two things stood out about it. 1: The meat was not "pulled" it was mostly three large chunks. 2: A quarter of the meal was fat. This has happened to me twice now.
google avatar

Asal A.

Yelp
The vibe is good. It's quite place so if you are looking for more crowded place this is not it. The food was average.their wings was perfect though
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
There's no reason this place isn't packed, looks like the Yelpers got it in for this restaurant. Lunch on a Monday after, had the salmon plate. It was awesome. Don't know what people are expecting anymore. Five stars, will be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
I'll be honest, I've never been a huge fan of the regular Wood Ranch. I'm not big into chain restaurants nor do I eat red meat. So when this place opened up around the corner from my house, I was never interested in checking it out. Flash forward several years later when I'm looking for happy hour and it's already almost 5pm. I know I need to find some place close by and hesitantly choose here. Come to find out....I had been missing out all of these years! Their happy hour is superb as it consists of their specialy cocktails (not just wells), beer, wine and food. Their margs and newport lemonade are delicious. I love the chicken tacos and always get a side of their habanero peach sauce. Definitely one of my favorite happy hours in Laguna Niguel!
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Incredible service and just as great food. Everyone was so nice and accommodating to us and our kids. Thank you. Olga was especially nice and helpful. Great experience and we will be back.
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
I've been here several times for lunch. The restaurant is clean and spacious with light music. Their barbecue plates are my favorites, but this time I decided to try the crispy chicken sandwich instead. It came with coleslaw instead of lettuce which is very different from other places. The chicken is battered and fried, and it was truly crispy. This is one of my favorite lunch spot during the weekday. The server was awesome every time I went.

Yelp
Unfortunately this have to give 2 stars for this visit. Service was good and the waitress was polite and attentive. Food came out pretty quick once we ordered. Upon eating my first taco I felt something stringy. When I looked at the taco there was a long hair hanging from the rest of the taco. I immediately informed the waitress and she took my plate, apologized and had them make me a new one right away. She was very nice and apologetic. I understand things happen sometimes and while it is not pleasant to have a long hair in you food and feel it your mouth when eating, it's how the manager handled the situation. Once we were done the waitress said she needed to get the manager to take off my meal. Once we got the check we noticed that there were 3 orders of taco's on the bill(my wife got the same thing as well). When we called over the manager she said it's because she had to put another order in to have the kitchen make it and took off one so it came out to 2 orders. I was confused as the waitress said they were taking it off the bill. She began to tell me she only took off the 3rd one and was not comping me anything. I don't really care that they didn't take anything off but, was confused with what the waitress had said. The manager then said I can take off your meal if that will make you feel better and said she did not want me to have a bad experience. She should have thought about that before ringing me up for 3 taking off 1 so it looked like they were making hair in the taco right. I will just drive further to go to the real wood ranch next time.

Yelp
Never again. Worst brisket. 7 ounces? Nah. It was 7 ounces of salt spice and fat. I ate what I could but left most of it.
google avatar

Racheal M.

Yelp
Great service and great drinks! Would definitely go back again. Got the hot chicken burger and it did what it was supposed to do.
google avatar

Sandra O.

Yelp
First time here and we tried the Happy Hour. My friend got the shishito peppers, too spicy and the chicken street tacos and she'd enjoyed them. I got the crispy shredded onions and off the regular menu, the Bbq Tri-Tip tip sandwich with the peanut Cole slaw. Delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, good price point, and friendly staff. Ambiance is simple , clean, fun . We will be coming back for sure!!!!

Yelp
What an awesome little gem in Laguna! I came here on a Sunday afternoon and was greeted with a friendly staff. They said the wait time was about 30 minutes but we were seated fairly quickly. The staff was attentive and friendly which is always a huge plus when going out somewhere. Now for the food, we started with some rolls and they are TO DIE FOR. I dare you to try and only eat one, it's almost impossible. For my dish, I ordered the Chop Salad with chicken and it was very good as well. The colors were awesome and the flavor was great. It also wasn't drenched in dressing which I liked. The portion size was rather large as well. I will definitely go back here again if I am in the area.

Yelp
Logan was very attentive and a great server. He helped me decide between 2 items and was very friendly. Definitely will ask for him next time I come in!

Yelp
Wish they would bring hard seltzers back, but overall, everything here is fantastic. Great way to eat lots of protein! Kids love it too.

Yelp
We were greeted by a lovely young lady who guided to our table. She offered a high chair for our little one and a complimentary plate with kiddo snacks, it was a nice touch. We quickly ordered and got our spinach artichoke app, it was a large portion of chips and some tasty spin dip, I was a little disappointed that there was more salsa than spin dip, but I get it... The food came out way too soon, but who am I to complain...I wasn't going to send anything back, but I probably should have voice my disappointment in: The brisket was over done and soggy. Honestly my wife and I likened it to dog food. I know that's an over exaggeration, but back to the main descriptor, "disappointing" The ribs were fine, sauce a bit too sweet. The Mac and cheese could have been put together better, maybe baked, just felt like there was no effort in the dish, just some pasta tossed in some cheese sauce. The cauliflower was inedible, tough and tasteless. Natalie's salad was nice, a bit over dressed. The Cadillac margarita was well done. Tastes and nice with the "fresh juices" We were not "wowed" by the experience, and the real tipping point of me writing to you, was my visit to the restroom at the end of the visit. It was nice and clean, but as I was finishing my business there, one of your staff walked out of the stall and then walked out the restroom. I asked him if he was going to wash his hands as he was half way out the door. He looked at me and said he was just on his phone.... I told him it didn't matter, he had just visited the restroom and was in the stall....he walked backed to his station and got his hands wet and said "sir, sir...see look" and showed me his wet hands. I watch the young man for a bit as my wife was still in the restroom. He was a young guy about 17-20, about 6ft 160-170lbs, dark wavy hair...I saw him handle food and poor some sort of sauce in a plastic ramekin... Pretty gross. All in all I can assure you'll we probably won't be back but wanted to reach out and let you know about our experience.

Shadi E.

Yelp
It was a great experience, we always go to Spectrum location but this time we tried this location and we were so happy. The good was awesome as always and the service was great. All the staffs are so friendly and nice. Highly recommended.
