The Best Wineries and Wine Tastings in the Columbia River Gorge | Eater Portland

"Wy’East is one of the old school spots in the Hood River area, planting grapes in the ’90s and producing its own wine starting in 2002. This is a family-run vineyard and it feels like it: Visitors sip out on the back deck with a view of the farm and alpacas, where winery dogs curl up next to tables and families play Bocce between pours. Try a tasting including Blue Chip pinot noir, made with grapes grown right next to the tasting room, along with semi-sweet grüner veltliner sourced from across the river in Underwood. Bring your own picnic or grab a weekend lunch from the on-site food truck, Wheels. During summer, don’t miss wandering the u-pick flower field to take home a fresh bouquet. Reservations are not required." - Molly Allen

My partner and I did a tour of Oregon vineyards with our pup, and we both agreed this place had the best atmosphere! The interior design and the decks and garden/lawn are all beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed all the wines and the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. Plus the alpacas are adorable!

Such a delightful experience. Staff Tommy and Elaine were lovely and informative. The wine was tasty and the environment was perfection. Not pretentious, but elevated still. Having a glass of wine and playing bocce with alpacas in the background was kind of a spectacular day.

Wy’east Vineyards is a lovely spot to relax in Hood River. The atmosphere beautifully combines a laid-back vibe with thoughtful décor. It’s unpretentious, offering good energy and stunning views. Plus, the alpacas are sure to capture everyone’s attention. Their Pinot Gris is outstanding! It's crisp, balanced, and incredibly refreshing on a warm afternoon. If you’re in the area, it’s worth stopping by for a glass and a brief escape from the heat.

Amazing experience here on July 4th our wine sommelier her name started with an M was very personable. We walked in with no reservation and she was welcoming us. Even when it started to get busy she still made sure to pour our next wine on the list of tastings and the description. I love that you can purchase a bottle and it covers your tasting cost. The grounds are really nice to chill out and relax. Pet friendly is a plus since we’re traveling with our babies.

Cute little winery with a great tasting. Hung out outside the patio and watched the alpacas. There’s bocce courts for people to enjoy and plenty of outdoor seating. Most friendly. Highly recommend!

Had a lovely tasting here on a very hot day. Our server was delightful and knowledgeable. All the wines were nicely made. The patio is a comfortable place to sit, even on a warm day. Highly recommend a visit here in the beautiful Hood River valley.

This is a unique and charming winery. The setting is lovely with a gorgeous outdoor patio area. You can sit under a trellis covered in grapes. Stroll down to the pond and watch the Llamas grazing. Go indoor in the their tasting room for a flight of wine. There is a boules playing area. There are grapes growing nearby. There are even a couple Moai statues near the vines. The kids found the area fun to hang out in. The wine tasting can be done indoor or on the patio. The wine selection was quite good and the pour are generous. Price of a tasting was $20. Parking is free and there is lots of it. There is food available. We got the cheese and cracker platter which was very good.

Yelp
Fun stop. Tom (I think that was his name), our wine pourer/helper/concierge was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I loved him explaining about the various differences in the grapes and wines from their place and the differences from places just 10 and 20 miles away, AND WHY. Was very informative in the perfect way without getting bogged down in minutiae. Real down to earth in the best kind of way. $20 wine tasting fee which they waived or applied towards the purchase of a bottle of wine. So essentially the wine tasting was free if you purchase a bottle of wine. Various wine bottles went from $25 (which I liked the best) to their top Reserve for $60. Well behaved Dogs on a leash allowed in wine tasting area.

Yelp
What a wonderful find on the Fruit Loop in Hood River OR. Their wines are delicious. The service was stellar and super friendly. Would be a regular if we lived in the area. Bonus for alpacas and a very friendly pooch!

Yelp
A simple but very pleasing tasting room, just off the main road (Hwy 35). Wines are quite good, especially the Pinot Noir and Syrah. Service was excellent and provided helpful information about the wines. I recommend sitting outside while tasting and enjoying the farm/vineyard views. Dogs are welcome outside while tasting.

Yelp
We stopped at Wy East Winery along the Mount Hood Fruit Loop Trail. We sat on the deck with a glass of their wine while watching the alpacas roaming the grounds. It's an unexpected addition. The calm atmosphere, paired with views of Mount Hood and the vineyard, creates a perfect relaxing afternoon.

Yelp
Amazing! Great wines, so much fun. We will definitely be back! Service is so friendly and awesome. The decor is fun and the outdoor ambiance is welcoming.

Yelp
Delicious wines and well-priced tasting and bottles. Nice outdoor seating and even has cute animals to look at while sipping your wine. Friendly staff, and a relaxing, fun spot worth checking out on your drive through hood river, or on your wine tour!

Yelp
What a gem! After years and years driving right by this vineyard right on Highway 30, I decided to make it our destination on Labor Day. I am so glad I did! What a charming setting! The patio is so quaint and inviting, lots of seating arrangements good for groups or couples. We chose a pair of comfy wicker chairs overlooking the field of flowers and alpaca and didn't leave for a few hours. The wines were quite good!! Usually a big, bold red drinker, since it was early in the day I opted for a glass of their Pinot Gris. It was the perfect choice for the warm summer day. Cris, light, with a hint of stone fruit, I had two glasses! And bought a few bottles to bring home. Also had a glass of the red table wine which I really enjoyed. The perfect drinking wine alone, with a charcuterie pate or meal. Prices are very reasonable, less than other boutique wineries in the area and well worth it. If you are ordering a glass, they offer a taste first which is much appreciated. They sell the most charming bouquets of flowers from their u-pick field and they are beautiful and affordable. At $5 a bunch, pick up a few and brighten someone's day! Of course I had to wander over to the flower field and take in the gorgeous views from that vantage point. I've never met a fresh flower I haven't loved! On a bright blue sky day, the last of the summer flowers looked incredible. Sunflowers, snapdragons, zinnia and more! in the parking area there is a food truck where you can purchase light meals and snacks. Service is friendly and inviting. I can't wait to go back! I am so happy that I found another winery to add to my list of "regulars" while in Hood River.

Yelp
We loved the wine here, the property and atmosphere is lovely on a nice day. Unfortunately, when we tried to visit today we were turned away. They were having a Wine Club only event, which is grand they do that. Except when they do not add anything to their website about it and we drive all the way out there to taste a few wines, purchase a few bottles (we usually get 6 bottles when we go). We had planned this all week, only day we had to get over there for a while. I will not make that mistake again, we'll find another location. It is too bad the customer service was so horrible, we even told them we were going to buy bottles, wanted to taste what were buying. Only thing we were offered was to join the wine club. We don't do clubs. It's nice to know their business is doing so good they can turn business away. We are small business owners and would never turn away business. Terrible experience!!

Yelp
We were driving in the Mt Hood area at the exact time in the evening when most of the local wine tasting spots are shutting down for the day. We got to Wy'East 15 minutes before closing time and they could not have been more welcoming, this place has a GREAT vibe! We ordered a flight of 5 wines to sample and settled in the front on a comfy couch cluster, complete with several sweet and friendly dogs to try their wines. We ended up liking two of them so much, we left with two bottles to take home. Before leaving, I noticed they also have a sweet outdoor space in the back that appears to be filled with local art/sculpture. We ended up hanging out for about a half hour, nobody rushed us at all, in fact, management encouraged us to relax and take as much time as we needed!

Yelp
Great wine stop ...., don't miss this one! Beautiful spots to sit and a great variety. I loved the rosé! The red was good too. The food truck with the vegetarian sandwich was perhaps the best I've ever had. My wife felt very happy and satisfied with the pulled pork cooked in a reduction of the properties wine. Service was friendly & did not lag.

Yelp
This is such an underrated gem! My husband and I (+dog) visited for the weekend from Seattle. The folks here were accommodating, knowledgeable, and very kind. There are tons of different and unique spaces on the patio to enjoy. We chose to lounge in rocking chairs near the alpaca and had several glasses of wine plus the tasting flight. We will definitely come again on our next visit to Hood River. Bonus points for the delicious food truck that had generous portions of charcuterie. Highly recommend Wy'East Vineyards!
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Great tasting wine and good prices for bottles and tastings. $15 tasting fee waived if you buy a bottle. Outside space is next to alpaca farm. There are metal animal sculptures around and they have a nice back deck. Parking is a little tight when busy. There is a bocce ball court as well. Very dog friendly location too.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely afternoon here with my daughter. Drove from Portland just to spend the day here. Wonderful wine and peaceful afternoon.

Yelp
Such a fantastic winery in the Hood River area! It doesn't look like much from the roadside but it's so cute and cozy once you get up close. We were really impressed with all of their wines and they are pretty affordable when compared with other boutique wineries in the area. We especially loved their Zinfandel and red table wine. They have a food cart on the premises that serves sandwiches, soups and cheese boards. We ordered a cheese board and also found it to be pretty affordable (as well as tasty). Overall, this is a really great stop when visiting the area. Wine tasting in Hood River is fun in general and is, you guessed it, an affordable experience when compared to other wine regions in the state like the northern Willamette Valley. Definitely come check them out!
google avatar

Teresa J.

Yelp
Relaxing stop on the way home from Hood River; they offer limited ciders and other refreshments besides wine. They have a food cart that was sending out some epic looking charcuterie boards, though we will have to go back to try them another time... they have funny and cool garden art to look at (or emulate) and alpacas, a horse and cute laidback "staff" dogs that keep their eye on you (probably for that bite of salami )!
google avatar

Yelp
Wy'East is a delightful small winery and vineyard. Their wines are well thought out and balanced. Their rose is the exact flavor of a summer day. Sipping on the back deck watching the birds and alpacas makes for a relaxing visit. We had a tiny Birthdays tasting for a friend on 6/8/21 and Jen couldn't have been a more welcoming hostess. She made sure we tasted the wines to find bottles we were interested in. She checked on us regularly to make we had everything and we were comfortable. We will be back soon to enjoy the wine and hospitality.
google avatar

Cassidy K.

Yelp
The best priced tasting and the best tasting wines I have had in the gorge. A flight is $15 and if you buy a bottle the tasting fee is waived. All the wines were fabulous. We loved the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir, but all of them were good. Would definitely buy bottles of all of them. Their dessert wine was served with chocolate which was a nice touch!
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
We went here on a recommendation, I didn't realize it was Pinot Noir focused. We tried the Pinot noir jerky and a flight. The outdoor seating is beautiful. They don't share wifi and the signal sucks. The back deck looks out on llamas in a field. You can't pick a bad seat here, the seating options are so thoughtful and fun.
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Tried this winery for the first time, and my husband & I were very satisfied. We live near Newberg, and were craving something beyond Pinot Noir's. We came specifically for the Carmenere, and Zinfandel, and they did not disappoint! Robust and jammy, but will stand up to a juicy steak! We left with 4 bottles. Definitely will be back! (Special shout out to Jen for fixing a minor problem)!
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
Lovely location, very peaceful overlooking the alpacas while you sit sipping good wines. Very large wrap around deck that's shaded with a variety of seating options. I really liked some of their big, bold reds

Magdalena A.

Yelp
The service was warm and so very hospitable. We had a flight where we were able to substitute a different white---ended up purchasing it! We order a sandwich and enjoyed a relaxing time watching the alpacas (one didn't move for so long, we thought it was a statue!) Great place to visit!
google avatar

Mollie J.

Yelp
Great wine in a pretty spot! Right off Highway 35 with a great view of the hills to the east. Good wine selection and lots of outdoor seating.
google avatar

Smith Q. J.

Yelp
I liked the four wines that I sampled here. I feel like these are good starter wines for people that don't drink wine that often. (See pics - not of the wine though)
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
So cute here and the ladies were so nice!! For sure coming back!! It's relaxing, you can see the alpacas in the distance and hear the birds in the trees.
google avatar

Shelby L.

Yelp
I've never been to a vineyard and this was perfect! Super quiet and small. I had the tilly white wine which was wonderful and super light. You get to sit on a huge deck, although in 90 degree heat, some spots are better than others. The gentleman who helped us was very nice and I didn't feel pushed to try or buy anything I didn't want to. Also bathrooms were super clean!

Judy C.

Yelp
Wonderful spot for wine tasting. Friendly, knowledgeable staff . This winery has the most interesting enjoyable staff, great wines, alpacas on the grounds. A more low key and relaxing spot. You feel like you hsve made new friends. Talk as much and as little as you wish about the wine. Definitely recommend this one
google avatar

Gabe T.

Yelp
Beautiful setting, loved the scenery and views. Very delicious tasting of their wines, we ended up buying a bottle of the rosé to bring home. Kind of an unexpected stop on our trip that day, but I'm glad we checked this vineyard out!
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
They fit us in last minute on Mother's Day, kept us warm with heaters and blankets, wine is delicious and the staff is so kind.
google avatar

Britteny C.

Yelp
Super cute quaint winery! I loved the family feel of this winery! The service I received was outstanding they made us feel like family! Now about the wine! I had the taster. We just did the regular one. The wine was super fresh and great. Make sure to stop here on your wine tour. They are also super dog friendly which I absolutely loved!

Alli N.

Yelp
Delicious options and knowledgeable staff. One of the best Charcuterie boards I've had during my trip in Oregon! Highly recommend this scenic tasting with the alpacas in the background. I for sure stop on your trip to Mount Hood.
google avatar

Chase W.

Yelp
My friend and I were road tripping through the area and stopped in their parking lot to stretch and eat some sandwhiches when the lady working called us in and offered a cute little wine garden to sit and relax in, regarldess if we tried any wine or not. The hospitality was greatly appreciated, and we did try some wine! I would definitely reccomend stopping by if you're in the area

Yelp
While visiting my cousin in Portland we decided to go on an impromptu wine-tasting adventure and ended up in the Hood River area. This was out first stop and we were a bit skeptical at first because of the size and appearance of the tasting room from the street. As we pulled into the parking lot we were immediately greeted by an adorable doggy who ran up to the car and welcomed us with lots of tail wagging. We received excellent service from the owner herself and enjoyed a great tasting in the cozy tasting room. The owner's adorable pups gave us a lot of attention as we were standing right in front of the treat drawer. We are total dog people, so this definitely added to the appeal. There is also a beautiful outdoor seating area where you can bring lunch and enjoy an outdoor picnic after your tasting. All in all: wonderful service, lovely tasting room and patio with a gorgeous view, excellent wine, and super cute doggies! What more could you ask for?

Yelp
The wines are outstanding with even better service! Enjoy a glass of vino on their amazing patio

Yelp
First time visiting Wy'East based on a recommendation from a stop earlier that day, great staff who are very knowledgeable and very happy to share thoughts on what they're pouring. The wine is very good as well. I had an amazing experience and will be back-- hopefully soon!
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
Four of us came here as a stop along the Fruit Loop, and this was our favorite stop! First things first, the wine is delicious and in the tasting they also have a Port available. The servers were very talkative and friendly and we really enjoyed our tastes. Wy'East has a deck off the tasting room with comfortable seats and tables. The server let us take our yummy tastes to the deck to enjoy, and she would periodically check on us and bring us the next in the flight. The view from the deck was quite pretty and they also had a bocce ball court available!

Nancy C.

Yelp
Beautiful little tasting room with outdoor seating and great wines. We sipped on two different tastings, one with just pinots. Kyla is very knowledgeable about the wines and the tasting notes were helpful. We all made purchases and are excited to try them at home! Wish that we had those huge pinot glasses!

Mary F.

Yelp
Hood wine, wonderful and hospitable service, and love that there are alpacas, statues, and a food truck on site! Beautiful spot to spend the afternoon and connect with kind people

Katy F.

Yelp
We had a "welcome night" at the Wy'east tasting room for guests who are coming to our sons wedding. It was a perfect venue for the event and the service and wine were outstanding! Lovely atmosphere for a casual gathering and such a great staff. It was welcoming (as the event was named), comfortable and just an all around perfect evening for our friends and family....everything we had hoped for and more.

Kendall G.

Yelp
AMAZING! The individualized experience was one that I have never had before at a winery. They were very knowledgeable about the wine they were serving and you could tell each person working there was more like a family. We loved it and will definitely be back!

Cely M.

Yelp
Beautiful location and property, but the first person at the counter seemed annoyed and impatient while our group of 3 were trying to decide what to get. We found a table outside and the person serving us outside was very kind and attentive. If it wasn't for first impressions, definitely would've given more stars.
google avatar

Catherine D.

Yelp
Great spot! Christie was very knowledgeable and helpful, and I was pleased to find a Chardonnay I actually liked. We really enjoyed the Pinot Noir Blue Chip as well. We stopped by on a Friday afternoon while driving between Mt. Hood and the Gorge. Wy'East has a great vibe (and great puppy), and I look forward to getting back soon!

Juliana S.

Yelp
perfect little vineyard for a post hike glass of wine. cutest outdoor patio (yay for being dog friendly!) with some delicious wines and a very peaceful setting. sweetest staff too! super glad we stopped in

Yelp
They opened today at 12pm not 11 -- so we had to leave and then return. Probably a seasonal switchup. The tasting room was easy to find off the primary highway on the Fruit Loop. It was a nice time overall. The owner and doggies greeted us. Not too rustic, not new age either. We bellied up to one side of the counter - and we received 6 complimentary pours because my friend was a Wine Club Member. The Pinot Gris was probably my favorite - and maybe the Syrah and the final offering a Port made w Pinot Noir Grapes and fortified with Clear Creek Distillery Brandy. I thought their presentation was adequate. The two hosts (owner, one new employee) were nice to talk with, but I personally got a little bored at the end as my friends were wrapping up their conversations. The tasting room provides a nice view of their small horse farm and vineyards. They source wine from neighboring vineyards as well. A couple big counters to stand or sit at. A sofa with some small tables made of barrels. No real souvenirs for sale, maybe a couple t-shirts --- a wall full of wine to peruse, purchase. The visit was good, the wine was B, B+, they offered a couple complimentary crackers and chocolate-always a nice touch.
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
I haven't found another vineyard that I truly like along the Fruit Loop journey in Hood River. What's probably most special about Wy'East is their laid-back attitude, but their killer Cloud Cap dessert wine sure ain't hurting things. I first visited in 2009 on a one-month anniversary. At that time, I don't remember any of their fermented grapes catching my eye but for the CC. On this trip, though, I found the '11 Gris to be a quite nice bottle for $18. The tasting fee is waived as long as you buy something, and there's no trace of the crazy business that awaits you at some of the other vineyards up the road.
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
We have been members of Wy'East Vineyards for the past couple of years. The staff is so friendly and the wine is delicious! Doug has helped us the past several visits and is always knowledgeable and welcoming. Great place!!
google avatar

Dee Dee B.

Yelp
We just had the best wine tasting experience we've ever had in the Gorge. Doug was so friendly & knowledgeable. Every wine on the Pinot Flight was delicious. We'll be looking for Wy'East wines where we shop & dine & stopping by again!

Joe V.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The wine is great, the people are great, and you get to stare at horses while you imbibe. Kyla and Malinda are wonderful people who know their stuff and will treat you just like family. I flew to Oregon all the way from NY so my time here is VERY precious, and I assure you, I have zero regrets about spending some time at this vineyard. Great work, folks!
google avatar

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
We were at another Winery in Dundee Oregon and ran into Glen, who works at the Wy'East tasting room. He was so friendly and gave us his card and told us next time we were in Hood River to come visit his Winery, so we did! And boy are we glad we did. They have a beautiful selection of wines, so much so that we are now members. We also took several bottles home with us. Highly highly recommend if you're ever in Hood River to stop by and enjoy a flight!

Arwen R.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, fantastic wine and a beautiful setting. If your in Hood River make this a must stop for wine tasting.
