These Are the 7 Best Indigenous–Owned Hotels in Canada - AFAR

"Opened in 2022 and owned by Long Plain First Nation, this 132-room hotel on Treaty One Territory features a curved, east-facing design inspired by Indigenous traditions and showcases unique artwork by Long Plain artists in every guest room and large focal pieces on each floor. The property includes 5,800 square feet of meeting space with a Knowledge Keepers’ area for Elders and leaders, bilingual signage in English and Ojibway, and a gift shop called Kookum’s Korner selling authentic Indigenous products. The on-site restaurant, Manoomin (wild rice), offers an Indigenous-inspired menu developed by a First Nations Red Seal Chef, and the hotel serves as an urban-reserve–linked hub for exploring nearby Indigenous cultural institutions." - Debbie Olsen

This was the first indigenous owned hotel so I went there to support the community but the rooms were not clean. Water was not passing through and it smells bad. Although it was a new building but was not kept very well. It was super noisy my next room guests were shouting and playing load music at around midnight. I ended up asking the reception to ask them to be quiet but they still shouted till morning I couldn't sleep even for one hour and I had meetings all day :( Don't recommend it.

The room was clean, fairly recently renovated, and had everything we needed. The staff were great and helped us as needed. The problem was the smell each morning of bacon, beer, and cigarettes in the elevator, and the fighting outside and subsequent man bleeding out on the couches in the lobby. Won't stay again, even though the hotel itself is pretty nice.

The rooms were quite nice, spacious and lots of counter tops!! Though the ceilings look kinda out of place.. other than that everything is perfect! The customer service is amazing and kind, they were patient when our key card wouldn’t work—twice.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Wyndham and wanted to share my experience. The hotel itself is beautifully designed, with a modern and welcoming atmosphere that immediately makes you feel comfortable. The rooms are spacious, well-maintained, and thoughtfully appointed, offering a relaxing environment to unwind after a long day. The service throughout my stay was excellent. The staff were professional, friendly, and accommodating, always ready to assist with any request. One aspect I truly appreciated was how the team went above and beyond to make sure my stay with a reactive dog was as smooth as possible. They provided helpful advice and resources, ensuring both my pet and I felt at ease during our visit. However, while the hotel offers great amenities, the location is less ideal due to its proximity to the airport. Throughout my stay, the constant sound of emergency service vehicles passing by created some noise disruptions, which might be an issue for light sleepers or those seeking a more tranquil environment. Overall, this Wyndham is a fantastic choice for those looking for a beautifully appointed hotel with excellent service, but it may not be the best option if peace and quiet are a priority due to its location near the airport. Despite this, the hotel’s accommodations and the staff’s attentiveness made my stay a pleasant one, and I would still recommend it for anyone in the area.

The room was nice, the heat was good. I say the heat was good because some hotels when i set the heat it goes too hot and then too cold, it never seems to stay at the temprature i set it at. One of the issues i had was the pool area floor was very disgusting. If you look at it u can see how dirty it is. Never walk in without sandals. Another issue i have is the lounge/resteraunt was closed before the sign says. Another issue is the deposit, $250 is pretty steep. We usually stay at another hotel and the deposit there is $100. So we will probably go back there because of these three issues. But if these aren't concerning to you, its a great place to stay.

We had some problems with our booking and they booked us for an accessible room with a tub rather than a walk in shower like we had asked for but we were able to get it sorted out quickly. The staff working the desk when we checked in said she was the only one working that day so it was all probably just an issue with them being understaffed and having a lot of people making reservations. Overall the hotel was genuinely gorgeous, the art was beautiful and the hotel staff were all incredibly friendly. The whole building was very nicely designed, I especially liked the hallways and I wish I had gotten a picture. The rooms were clean and the bathroom mirrors were very fancy. The mattresses were fine, definitely not the most comfortable out of the hotels we've stayed at though. The room had a fridge and a coffee station but we had to call the desk for a microwave. I'm assuming they provide them upon request and probably have a limited amount? There was no light in the actual shower which was bothersome but otherwise not an issue. The pool area was nice, they have a water slide which is fun if you're traveling with your family. The hotel is also pretty close to a lot of shopping plazas and a pet store. |It's probably the best choice in the area.

Modern, clean hotel located right by Polo Park and the airport. Indigenous owned and operated, featuring indigenous artwork around the hotel and local indigenous crafts for sale in the lobby. Tax-exemption when you book with First Nations status card. Restaurant and gourmet café in the lobby. Only concerns are the rooms could use more soundproofing, and the damage deposit was rather steep ($250) but i will definitely be staying again!

Absolutely great hotel! Well maintained, very clean and well equipped rooms. Personnel is very friendly and helpful. Room has everything you need for a comfortable staying, either for business or pleasure. Mattress was too soft for me, but it's subjective. I truly enjoyed the supper in the restaurant, pickerel and roasted vegetables were absolutely delicious! Special thanks to the chef!!! I will be back here for 100%, and I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Yelp
Good place. They just never refunded me for my $250 deposit fee on Nov 7-8th. And it's been 6 days. My thing, if you're going to stay with these people, have a paper trail, because you won't get your deposit back unless you have proof.
