14 Essential Colorado Breweries to Visit in 2022 - AFAR

"Credited as Colorado's first brewpub after opening in Denver's Lower Downtown in 1988, this pioneering spot helped revitalize the neighborhood and built a reputation for boundary-pushing, rule-breaking beers (past recipes have included green chiles, gummy bears, and even Rocky Mountain oysters). Its influence is memorialized by a Brewers Association award named for the original brewer that honors innovation in brewing." - Bailey Berg

To start with the service was exceptional. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The chicken and waffles were some of the best that I have ever had and I’m from the southern us where that is a staple. The southern fried chicken was done perfectly and very tender. The house made waffles were very good and unique in flavor and served with a homemade syrup and candied pecans. I guess I will need to return to Denver for the best chicken and waffles. They also have a nice selection of their own brewed beers and delicious cocktails. Unfortunately the pictures show them half eaten.

Went for a late lunch on a Tuesday and we were treated like royalty 😉 Zack made sure we had good food to go along with great beers! Pool is free 11a-4p (weekdays?) so we knocked some balls around. Tables are well-spaced and the beer selection was great. We grabbed a couple of IPAs (filtered) and hit the green! Food came out fast and the menu is diverse enough to feed our special picky eater. I'd recommend they get some cues that are straight (1 out of the 20 we checked were hella bad, that 1 was tolerable at best), otherwise you may need to bring your own. Balls are okay with a few missing a chip here and there. Get the beer cheese pretzel and the Sheppard's Pie, you won't be disappointed with eother. Or both!! Just a couple blocks from Coors Stadium. Watch for crowds from 4p onwards on game nights. Had a really nice time for a late lunch and hope to be back soon! Thanks Zack!

Google
This place is my go-to spot for pool, hands down. The reason is simple: they always have tables during happy hour. There’s a lot of business events and afterworkers, so the vibe is great. It can get a bit hot, so be sure to find a fan. They often change their happy hour schedule based on events and general changes. The bartenders upstairs are some of the best in downtown Denver, so I think management does a great job.

Google
The burgers here are great especially the bison burger. The atomsphere is on point it was really cozy and fun. There were arcade games upstairs. The service was pretty fast and friendly. I tried the classic burger and their root beer. Burger was great I didn't really like the root beer but we easily swapped it out for another soda. Seriously try the bison burger I only had a bite of my sister's but it was great.

I’ve hosted my fair share of events in my life and this was one, if not the best, experiences with a venue I have had. Highly recommend using the beautiful and historic Wynkoop to host your next event. Alex and Nathan helped get us set up and were extremely helpful and communicative. Our servers Brian and Kayla were constantly present making sure every guest had a drink in hand and were well taking care of. They were also both a complete delight. The staff added little touches that went with the theme of our party, which made it all the more special. It was very thoughtful. On top of all of this the food and drinks were solid! Our guests were complementing how tasty everything was, and left well fed. Couldn’t be happier, a huge thank you to the staff at Wynkoop for helping make our event so wonderful!

Google
Über lager not great per two people in our group. Pork chops were kinda ruined by the shrimp. Bison burger was decent but side of cole slaw was bland. Bathrooms downstairs. Pool tables upstairs.

Google
What an amazing place and great selection of beer on tap.. the food is great and hot.. service is amazing and down to earth but right on top of things.. definitely must check it out..

Google
We stopped into Wynkoop Brewing after a day of exploring downtown Denver and really enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere is relaxed with plenty of character (loved the gorilla statue by the brewery tanks!), and the beer was spot-on. Our server was friendly and helpful, and there was a great selection of brews on tap. A perfect place to take a break and soak up some local flavour. Would definitely return!

Yelp
love this place! Service was great and building is so cool! Had the chicken and waffles, it was delicious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My crew ordered a table full of appetizers. The top two preferred by the table - the monster pretzel and the buffalo wings. Honestly - some of the best Buffalo wings I've ever had! Wish I would've ordered them individually instead of agreeing to share...

Yelp
We always recommend Wynkoop Brewing as one of our go-to restaurants for when family and friends visit. It's one of the best restaurants within walking distance from Union Station. It's also a good restaurant to get a good variety of food or a change of atmosphere. Main level you've got your bar or dining area, then upstairs there's more tables and pool. Food is always great and served very quickly! All the food came out so fast our whole table was full. Only request would be for more water. We only had 1 refill on a hot summer day with tons of food, so if this happens to you don't forget to ask for more when you see your waiter/waitress!

Yelp
Alexa was very sweet and welcoming. The place was comfortable and inviting. The beer was refreshing and on point. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Historic brewery with prime location downtown next to Union Station. Seating and service was quick on a Sunday night, with another couple dozen people eating/playing pool upstairs. Menu is fairly typical brewery food with a few unique options. Edamame appetizer was too spicy for the table while the pretzel was huge and tasty! Bison burger was cooked well and fries were crispy. Overall, good experience, you get what you expect and we will likely end up back here with friends again for food and/or one of the many group events that is always going on upstairs.

Yelp
Great location & vibe! They take Oktoberfest seriously with special menu items! Enjoyed a beer & good eats!

Yelp
This place is nothing short of excellent. Great staff, fantastic beers, and a world-class atmosphere. I'm in town for a Rockies game and the proximity to the stadium alone makes it worth the trip. If you have a minute, check it out... You won't regret it!

Yelp
Great place for some beer and some appetizers. Wings were a bit mid- dry. Had the pickles and the artichoke dip. Service from the bar was attentive .

Yelp
Got a chance to hit a number of breweries this weekend in Denver. Wynkoop by far wins for friendliest staff. They went above and beyond to ensure we were able to get seated with a few extra friends that decided to join us even though our reservation was only for four. The food was good and beers were the star of the show here. I wasn't drinking much here, but my friends who are beer experts provided the two thumbs up. This place is fun with pool tables and a lot of space.

Yelp
WynKoop Brewing: A Hilarious Hummus Fiasco If you're in the market for a laugh and some libations, WynKoop Brewing is your spot. Quick, friendly service? Check. Air conditioning to beat the summer heat? Double check. But let's talk about that hummus plate: it was more "meh" than Mediterranean. The hummus itself was passable, but the red bell pepper had the texture of a soggy sponge--zero crunch and definitely not fresh. Calling those veggies "seasonal" is like calling a microwave dinner "gourmet." I'm pretty sure the carrots saw fresher days... last season. However, the atmosphere is great, and the service is fast and friendly. If only their vegetables had as much zest as their staff. In summary, come for the beer and AC, but maybe skip the hummus unless you're feeling adventurous--or particularly fond of rubbery red peppers.

Yelp
The beers here were quite good! I had both the giant pretzel (which was giant) and the patty melt (don't judge, I was hungry)! The pretzel was amazing. I scraped a little of the salt off, as is my custom, and it was hot and doughy a, and the queso and mustard were amazing! The patty melt was definitely juicy and it was ok, although I thought the fries were a little boring (in fairness I was pretty full) and could use more flavor and I thought the patty melt itself could have used a little seasoning. Definitely a cool place and a solid choice. And a great selection of beers.

Yelp
During our trip to Denver we stopped by here twice. Once just for a beer and once for lunch. We went to many breweries during our trip and this was my least favorite beer during our visit to Denver but they do have a pretty extensive list of beers they brew. The food for lunch was pretty good. I had the Korean chicken sandwich and it was tasty. Service was decent and the inside ambience is really cool with what looks like an old place with a great old feel. It's convenient to Union Station and a decent lunch meal. The beer, well, there are better breweries around.

Missus T.

Yelp
Great salad, lovely building. Beer was a little warmer than I like, and service was haphazard but well meant.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of this place. Here's what I like: Quick efficient service Great food and beer The ambiance is wonderful as it's a historical building in a great location of Denver near Union Station.
google avatar

Yelp
My, my, my. I had not been here since pre-Covid and what a difference a decade makes. They used to make one of my favorite beers, a cask-conditioned ale. They don't make such a thing any more. That's ok--I figured a hazy ipa would get me through the day. Hmm. It didn't . It wasn't a great beer. Laminated menus and sticky floors were the last straws telling me not to come back.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Came here while out of town to work and have a few beers and a snack. Wound up trying a few of their IPAs and they didn't disappoint. They have a happy hour menu - I went with the pretzel bites. The service was great, all the bartenders were attentive and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Wynkoop is a Denver classic since 1988 and it's fun to see some of the original beers that are still in the menu. Pretty good crowd before the Pink concert and the bartenders were having fun interacting with customers at the bar. Downstairs has the bar and about 20 tables with more upstairs and on the patio. Tonight 13 beers were on tap and for those of you who want something else there's a full bar. The food menu is has burgers, salads, apps, and a few entrees from Mac and cheese to chicken and waffles. If you want a solid meal with local beer near Union Station then Wynkoop continues to deliver.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
Love this spot for playing pool! Bonus is that it's a brewery and full bar that serves food! The vibe is chill and mature in the upstairs part with the pool tables, darts, and more.
google avatar

Pauline L.

Yelp
Fried green tomato sandwich with chipotle Mayo was delicious. Bread thick, crusty, and chewy!!! Generous salad . Great service, food, and ambiance. Watermelon salad was fresh but could have used feta. Appetizer edamame had a chili oil on them, salty and crunchy and the pretzel was large and great to share.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awesome! Went for a fan meetup and was super impressed. The place is massive and the drinks are great. The service was nothing but excellent!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Wynkoop is fun but be prepared to wait a spell. We were there for lunch but kept losing our waiter. He was insanely kind and super sweet but darn it, he was like trying to catch a leprechaun after a rainstorm at the end of a rainbow... Impossible! Fun fact there is a bizarre "lift" near the restrooms upstairs... DO NOT GET IN THE LIFT!! It is for the apartments above the restaurant. The twins and I decided to give it a shot, we were not warned, and had quite an adventure . Mind you we did have a lot of giggles and made a ton of friends a long the way. Trust this place is worth the visit! Just make the time and don't use the lift!

Yelp
Cruising the mad streets of Denver with my partner in crime, we decided to stop at Wynkoop for a local brew. Unfortunately we were not hungry but did opt for a delicious warm pretzel with cheese. It was a nice day so we chose to sit outside and enjoy crowd watching. This was earlier in the day so it was not too crowded and there was plenty of seating. For beers, we settled on the High Speed head butt; which was an IPA. I chose the Kooperstown, which was a blonde golden ale. My ale was tasty, smooth, and refreshing. The IPA was also very good, it did not have that bitterness that IPAs can tend to have. Our pretzel was a great compliment to our beers. It came with both cheese and mustard. The fluffiness, good chew, and slight saltiness made it a good pairing with beer. Overall, this place was great. They have tons of pool tables you can use upstairs. Staff were friendly and helpful! I definitely recommend.

Yelp
We met out of town friends at Union Station and wanted to find a spot nearby for lunch. Wynkoop fit the bill. We were greeted and seated outside in a jiffy. Our server Savannah was FANTASTIC! She gave great suggestions and was an absolute delight. We ordered a variety of yummy eats. Everyone was thrilled with their choices. Tacos, burgers, pretzels, mac and cheese... Everything was fresh and tasty. Our friends had to jet off to Red Rocks for a concert, so we ordered another round of beer and headed upstairs. They have Golden Tee!! Something we can never find in our SoCal town. We hung out for a couple of hours. Everyone was great, beers cold and atmosphere lively. We will definitely be back the next time we visit. Wynkoop is a true Denver gem.

Yelp
This is a really lovely spot for British food and vibes. I came for lunch and had the Shepherd's pie and one of their house brewed wheat beers. When the Shepherd's pie came out I thought it looked small, but it was actually a substantial and filling amount! The food tasted lovely and I enjoyed the beer. The workers were very attentive to our needs. I would like to come back here at night to see the scene then, but this is definitely one of my favorite places in Denver!

Jamie T.

Yelp
Our bartender, Savannah was amazing! It was our first time in Denver, CO and our first stop, she was so warm and welcoming-- gave us some cool suggestions on hikes and neighborhoods to check out. The feel of the brewery is really chill and laidback, they have pool tables and foosball tables on the second floor. Restrooms were clean and accessible. Food is pretty good and had a decent portion to them. We ordered a brunch burrito to share that was filling enough for the 2.5 beers we had at this wonderful establishment. Tasty brews, their triple play sour was bomb and we got a growler to go! Not a stout person but the resident stout they had on tap is something i definitely would buy again and drink happily! What we had: -petite peche -flagship amber -hefeweisen -stout -triple play stout -vegetarian burrito All things we had were awesome, wish we tried more things--will likely revisit to try more things out in the future at a different time because we simply cannot just stay at one place our very short time in denver!
google avatar

Jake W.

Yelp
30 minutes to get a beer after ordering. Our food came and we ate and then only after we told the bus that we hadn't had our drinks, drinks came. And the toasty wait left they/their phone on the table. Woof.
google avatar

Ashleigh S.

Yelp
Our go to spot before Rockies games! We always sit at the bar and enjoy the food, drinks and friendly service!

Yelp
I came here after an Avalanche game with some beer flights and a quick bite to eat. It was kind of late in the night, but the bar area was for the most part pretty full. The service was great and the beers I tried were tasty. I ordered their Loaded Green Chili Fries. It was supposed to come with white queso, green chili, cotija, lime crema, and cilantro. The queso looked yellow and was lukewarm, the crema tasted like regular crema. Didn't not get any citrus in this dish, and I didn't not see or taste cotija cheese. I'm not exactly sure how all of these items would have altered this dish, but what I received was delicious. Definitely very filling. I couldn't not finish this dish, and usually finish my plates. This is definitely a place I can see myself returning to, next time time I'm in town.

Melanie W.

Yelp
Large establishment with fun atmosphere. The service was not the very best. It's very hot in here and they serve water without ice. Bathrooms in the basement smell like the fermentation from the beer. Each of ordered something different and none of us was really impressed. Shepherd's Pie was very greasy. Korean fried. Chicken was fried chicken with soy sauce. Carnitas tacos did not hold up. The in house root beer was not good. Also we did not order it but the Southside is borderline racist which was surprising considering the pride flag out front.
google avatar

Jami W.

Yelp
Delicious and unique food and drink. Of course we started with a flight and shared a giant portion of nachos. Everything was delicious

Yelp
Pretzel bites from happy hour menu Brewer' burger Pork chop Service - fast and friendly
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
Perfect evening weather wise so ambience was really nice. We sat outside facing Union Station at a high top table. Beers were good - I got a Hefe and my husband got a Red Ale. The food was very average - I got the Brewers burger and he got the pork chops. For $19, the burger was very OK - had a fakey charbroiled flavor and wasn't overly flavorful or juicy. The sweet potato fries were tasty. The pork was VERY dry - was severely lacking a sauce (I thought it came with an apple sauce but it was mustarda glazed apples in top). Polenta was tasty. Glad we had the Denver Passport book so it was BoGo entrees. Positives were great location and the building/historic Feeling was cool.
google avatar

Jessie Elizabeth J.

Yelp
Great service and bartender the people who work here are great! It's a great spot for a drink and snacks. The main course food for me is underwhelming. The "Korean Fried Chicken" sandwich is also described as kaarage, and seasoned with togarashi, both Japanese so not sure what part of it is Korean style? Not letting the misnomer affect my review I promise just confused. It was ok-the pickled peppers and spinach do nothing for the sandwich and the chicken itself while perfectly crispy was super bland. The whole thing fell apart and we had to eat both sandwiches with a fork. The coleslaw is what you'd get in any standard diner. The bbq pulled pork was very juicy but again the bun couldn't handle it and was coming apart like a sloppy joe right when served. My root beer had an awful flavor almost like mold or cleaning solution in it, not sure what that was from but if it's served from a tap that tap needs to be washed out.
google avatar

Merav L.

Yelp
I came hungry stringy from the airport. I wanted to try local food and read pork green chilli is one staple here in Denver. It came very hot, both spicy and temp, as I like with a. Fresh wheat tortilla that usually I don't care for but it was super fresh and very fitting. It was very filling, satisfying and flavourful. Only one thing, it was my first time trying this dish. It wasn't thick as I know bean chilli to be, it was more soupy. I'm not sure if this is how it meant to be. Service was attentive, welcoming and nice.
google avatar

Alexei R.

Yelp
Good service. Cool bar. Didn't try the food but had a Manhattan and a bottle of wine. Decent happy hour
google avatar

Karena W.

Yelp
$17 for an old fashioned seemed a bit steep, but the service and atmosphere were great!
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
This is a great place to hang with friends and have a casual night out. It's very large with many pool tables (10+), foosball, shuffleboard, darts, and a few arcade games. There's a great selection of beer, and they brew most of them themselves. Happy hour offers $6 beer and $1 off appetizers. Pool is only $10/hr and darts are free. The veggie shepherd's pie was tasty but a little salty.
google avatar

Trisha B.

Yelp
We stopped in on a whim and while we only had beer, the menu looked great, too. A large establishment near Union Station, a good place to spend time while waiting for your train. Bar service was attentive and informative, making recommendations on where to visit next.

Yelp
Fun Fact: Wynkoop Brewing is Colorado's first brewpub, operating for more than three decades! (wynkoop.com) Located right by Union Station and mere blocks from Coors Field sits this Denver icon. They push both the food and beer envelope, making sure that this just isn't any ordinary brewpub. Case in point: * Grilled Salmon~za'atar crusted salmon, couscous, pisto, sumac labneh. An elevated and delicious dish, I didn't even need that big knife to cut into the salmon. Fried Pickles~Railyard beer battered pickle spears, chipotle ranch. I love when they use spears and that batter was crisp, almost tempura like. Pretzel with Wynkoop Beer Cheese~who doesn't love a pretzel? Beer Flight, including Patty's Chile Beer (named after a local critic who, at first, hated it), Railyard, Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout (IYKYK and it's nuts if you don't), Fuzzy Little Headbutts, and Schrödinger's Silo. * With ceilings for days, a huge bar area, and ample indoor and outdoor seating, it's easy to see why Wynkoop remains a destination for both visitors and locals.

Bruce K.

Yelp
First stop of the night for a beer, based on my niece's recommendation. It was busy enough that they had an hour wait for tables but there were a few seats at the bar. This is a neat spot with a deep history. It was the first craft brewery in Denver on Skid Row and started in a time when Skid Row was not a great place. All that's changed as Denver and this neighborhood gentrified and grew up. Today, standing across the street from the renovated Union Station, it's a seriously awesome watering hole. As much as I would have stayed for dinner, I had plans for elsewhere and a short time on the meter. I thoroughly enjoyed the Wixa Weiss beer and drooled over the fried pickles and burger that my neighbor enjoyed as we watched some ball game on the television. Off to the next but I am sure that I will be back to this place. [Review 18984 overall - 84 in Colorado - 2508 of 2022.]

Robert K.

Yelp
This was our second visit to Wynkoop. Both times we went after a Rockies game. The problem was the limited menu they offered. I asked for the chicken sandwich I had seen a previous reviewer recommend. The server said they are now only offering a limited menu. I asked why. He did not offer a reason but said those were the only choices.
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Service is a little on the slow side, but the beers are good and the food was solid American fare.
google avatar

JacCi R.

Yelp
The food, the beer, the staff were amazing. Shout out to Lilly for the good recommendations. First time eating there and we were happy we found it prior to heading the airport.
google avatar

Elton R.

Yelp
Great local brewery, supposedly the oldest in Denver. Wife got the Rail-yard Red and I did the flight. They have a light larger with coffee that is awesome. The Patty's Chili is also good with chilis and peppers! Stop by and try some beer!
google avatar

Hans P.

Yelp
Wynkoop Brewing is every bit as good now as it was back in 2010 when I first discovered it. They serve good pub food, they brew good beer, the interior reminds me of the old Cheers show, and the service is attentive. Let me give a thanks to Savanna, who know how to make a group of out-of-towners feel welcome.
google avatar

Brennan D.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday afternoon before our flight back to NY. Spacious interior with rustic brick and friendly staff. Savannah was amazing and made some great IPA suggestions that I've never tried before. She even gave me a few samples to try without me asking! Next time we're back in Denver I'll definitely be stopping by again
google avatar

Tamara B.

Yelp
Savannah was an incredible friendly for our first time in and was kind enough to make great recommendations. Open pool room with foosball and local beer, I only wish I got a pic of the food before I ate it all (beet salad, try it)
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Stopped here for with a few friends after work for a drink. I really liked the hot spiced rum drink but there was a thick layer of butter floating on the top that was off putting. Great flavor otherwise though! My next and last drink of the night was the pinky Paloma. I couldn't taste the cocktail and there was SO much peppercorn on top that it ruined the drink for me. All I could taste was the pepper. I think they were understaffed because it took like 20 minutes to get our drinks every time and they were not super busy. But our waitress was very nice. Lots of seating indoors and outdoor. Not much parking nearby other than street parking.

Yelp
Great service, atmosphere, and food/ drinks - Went above and beyond in making sure my experience was a good one.
