Xandari Resort & Spa, Near San José, Costa Rica - Explore & Book

"Just a 20-minute drive from San José airport, you ascend into the jungled hills above the valley and up into another world: colourful modern architecture surrounded by exotic flowers in the lush gardens of Xandari. Here you find the labour of love of Californian architect Sherrill Broudy and his painter wife Charlene; this secluded hilltop resort provides a welcoming and unique experience. Rooms are spacious individual villas, with high curving wooden ceilings and white walls that act as a backdrop for Charlene’s vividly coloured paintings and eclectic wall hangings. Each villa has its own generous balcony with rattan recliners so that you can lie back and take in the sun, or just gaze out at the valley spotting birds swooping from tree to tree. Have a massage in the spa’s beautiful jalapas, wander along trails through the jungle to secret waterfalls, plunge into the Jacuzzi-with-a-view, and feast on locally produced food in the restaurant. Xandari is a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica for families, couples and friends alike. Highs Secluded feel: each room gives you acres of private space, and the resort is set in beautiful gardens with 4km of walking trails and bamboo grovesClose to the airport: spend the start or end of your trip here (we think 2 nights minimum) discovering hidden waterfalls and getting pamperedSpa with interesting treatments such as a 'chocolate delight' scrub and massage, as well as 3 heated outdoor pools and a spectacular array of activities on offerA warm welcome from charming, friendly staff, and good, locally produced foodThe views from the rooms' private terraces across the tropical gardens and down to San José are stunning Lows Villas are very basic and some fittings look a little cheap, but we spent the majority of our latest revisit on the terrace or exploring the groundsThe décor is lively rather than restrained: imagine Matisse meets Gaudí meets Picasso. We grew to enjoy it, howeverThe small dining area and bar space can get crowded in peak seasonAdmirable lack of heating and air con in the rooms from an environmental point of view. But bring pyjamas if you’re coming in the green season (May-September)Sliding patio doors have ventilation holes that may allow some little creepy crawlies in - don't forget you are amidst 40 acres of tropical gardens (reception can provide bug spray)" - Christabelle Dilks

Xandari Resort And Spa | Best places to stay in Costa Rica

"Only a half-hour drive from San José international airport, this re-wilded former coffee hacienda is a good choice for a pre- or post-flight stopover. There are wonderful views from pretty much anywhere in the hotel. The plush Ultra Villas – with floor-to-ceiling glass windows – look across the central valley to the twinkling lights of San Jose and the rippling Cerro de Escazu mountains. The hacienda sits in extensive gardens on the edge of forest, cut by wildlife trails – some leading to beautiful waterfalls. " - Alex Robinson

We spent two nights at this beautiful resorts and were treated wonderfully. Our massages and facials by Deymi and Lisbeth were so relaxing and soothing. Oscar and Mario in the restaurant kept us well fed and entertained. We thoroughly enjoyed the adventurous 5K hike down to the waterfalls, and greatly appreciated the bamboo walking sticks provided by the front desk, as the path was moderately steep and challenging. Our villa was spacious and clean, and the beds were soft and comfy. Even though it was rainy/cloudy in the afternoon, the grounds and property were stunning. A quick 30 minute Uber ride from Alajuela, or 45-60 from San José. Highly recommend staying here.

My children and I recently stayed at Xandari in CR and it was a great experience! There is so much to do at the resort in which you can hike their trails, enjoy their waterfalls, relax at the pool/hot tub, visit their farm animals, have a massage at their spa or simply take in the amazing views of your room of the city. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. The food here was fantastic and fresh! The rooms are always clean and well maintained. They also offer excursions if you are not sure and didn't book any in advance. I would gladly recommend this place to others and return. If you enjoy exploring and getting to know the people and culture of Costa Rica, try this place! Much more than just the beach. Thank you for treating us so well.

This is the second time we stayed here. It is the perfect place to relax after flying in. Close to the airport but you feel like you’re so secluded and far away from the city. Property was well kept and clean. The villas were spacious. Staff is very friendly. Breakfast was yummy. Dinner food was good too. The rooms didn’t have AC, but both times we were there, didn’t feel like we needed them.

I booked this gem after we extended our trip. This place is a wonderland. My honey was beaming from the lobby to our room, to dinner to our nature hike. ||The property is vast and offers an amazing trail that exceeded our expectations. We hired a guide for bird watching, which was well worth the time and money. A must do. I don't want to giveaway the surprises on the trail, but, WOW! ||The food!!!!!!! The chef is ***** (five stars). The dinner was the best we had in our two week stay in Costa Rica. Amazing food, views and staff. Treat yourself and make a reservation. ||The accommodations are lovely. I wasn't sure what to expect, but we love the property. Our room was massive with our own private balcony. ||JUST, WOW!!!

AMAZING! The moment we walked in we were greeted, we had so many questions for first time travelers to Costa Rica and they were so kind and patient. I love that you can book drivers to certain excursions.. we had a driver named Louis (I hope this was his name) and he took us last minute literally just arriving in rainy season to the falls & man most drivers would sit in the car and wait for you to come back but no he took every moment spent it with us , in the rain and all and even help us take photos and telling us about the beautiful country along the way. Room was literally spotless ! The restaurant there is so good!! I love the included breakfast soooo much more though but please if they have any strawberries dessert dishes for dinner do not skip it! What I did struggle with was the map they provide guided tours but that map was meant for a pro haha I end up going the long way to the falls but the views were unforgettable & worth it if you love a good hike! I’m sure if you want a short cut you can just ask. Lastly listen if you are someone who relies on WiFi and TV stay home or get an extended WiFi service if you work remote cause this is a place to fully disconnect and be one with nature. Also sad part I really wanted to go to the infinity pool they have but they were under construction, but there is so much beauty in the hotel that I was only alittle sad about it. PURA VIDA 🇨🇷

The location is super easy vac! It only took us 30 minutes in rush-hour from San Jose airport. Our villa was extremely clean, and room service cleans the room quickly and very well every day. Sending views from all over the property. Before we came, I was concerned about not having air-conditioning, but I wasn’t hot or cold the entire stay. The fans and airflow keep the room very comfortable. All of the staff from cleaners, landscapers, front desk, and waiters and waitresses are extremely friendly and helpful. Kendall and Oscar were our waiters most of the time and they were awesome! They put up with all of the special requests from my pregnant wife haha. We are definitely hoping to come back.

We stayed here one night after an evening flight into San Jose. The hotel is beautiful. We loved the trails on the property and visiting the waterfalls. The in room coffee was wonderful. Breakfast was fantastic. Wish I had more than one night here - it was great and I would definitely return.

Incredible couples massage from Deymi and Irene. Best massage I’ve ever had and the ambiance in the couples room was amazing. All the staff are so kind and welcoming. Beautiful resort with very nice rooms. Would recommend this place to anybody looking for a getaway in the area.
