Xandari Resort & Spa, Near San José, Costa Rica - Explore & Book

"Just a 20-minute drive from San José airport, you ascend into the jungled hills above the valley and up into another world: colourful modern architecture surrounded by exotic flowers in the lush gardens of Xandari. Here you find the labour of love of Californian architect Sherrill Broudy and his painter wife Charlene; this secluded hilltop resort provides a welcoming and unique experience. Rooms are spacious individual villas, with high curving wooden ceilings and white walls that act as a backdrop for Charlene’s vividly coloured paintings and eclectic wall hangings. Each villa has its own generous balcony with rattan recliners so that you can lie back and take in the sun, or just gaze out at the valley spotting birds swooping from tree to tree. Have a massage in the spa’s beautiful jalapas, wander along trails through the jungle to secret waterfalls, plunge into the Jacuzzi-with-a-view, and feast on locally produced food in the restaurant. Xandari is a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica for families, couples and friends alike. Highs Secluded feel: each room gives you acres of private space, and the resort is set in beautiful gardens with 4km of walking trails and bamboo grovesClose to the airport: spend the start or end of your trip here (we think 2 nights minimum) discovering hidden waterfalls and getting pamperedSpa with interesting treatments such as a 'chocolate delight' scrub and massage, as well as 3 heated outdoor pools and a spectacular array of activities on offerA warm welcome from charming, friendly staff, and good, locally produced foodThe views from the rooms' private terraces across the tropical gardens and down to San José are stunning Lows Villas are very basic and some fittings look a little cheap, but we spent the majority of our latest revisit on the terrace or exploring the groundsThe décor is lively rather than restrained: imagine Matisse meets Gaudí meets Picasso. We grew to enjoy it, howeverThe small dining area and bar space can get crowded in peak seasonAdmirable lack of heating and air con in the rooms from an environmental point of view. But bring pyjamas if you’re coming in the green season (May-September)Sliding patio doors have ventilation holes that may allow some little creepy crawlies in - don't forget you are amidst 40 acres of tropical gardens (reception can provide bug spray)" - Christabelle Dilks

Xandari Resort And Spa | Best places to stay in Costa Rica

"Only a half-hour drive from San José international airport, this re-wilded former coffee hacienda is a good choice for a pre- or post-flight stopover. There are wonderful views from pretty much anywhere in the hotel. The plush Ultra Villas – with floor-to-ceiling glass windows – look across the central valley to the twinkling lights of San Jose and the rippling Cerro de Escazu mountains. The hacienda sits in extensive gardens on the edge of forest, cut by wildlife trails – some leading to beautiful waterfalls. " - Alex Robinson

We got there after a 24-hour flight to Costa Rica. We stayed for less than 24 hours to rest before we moved to our next location. The hotel was a perfect start to our vacation. Twenty minutes from the airport, we were in the most beautiful hotel with the most amazing view. Everyone was super friendly, and they had gluten-free food in a restaurant with a view to remember. Last but not least, the resort has its own natural trail to see waterfalls, an easy, beautiful trail we enjoyed. The entire experience immediately took us from the long journey to a tropical vacation. If you have enough time and want to recharge, I strongly recommend this place.

Whether it’s a weekend getaway with your girlfriends or a romantic escape with your favorite person, Xandari Resort is the perfect destination. Located only 25 minutes away from SJO airport and nestled in the hills of the town of Alajuela, you’ll discover a hidden tropical paradise bursting with vibrant colors, inspiring art, and the warm hospitality that defines Costa Rica. What makes Xandari Resort truly magical isn’t just the villas, waterfalls, or sunsets, it’s the people who bring it all to life. Lucy greets you with a smile that instantly makes you feel at home. Luis (#1) is always ready with a helpful tip or a joke, while Luis (#2) turns every adventure, like milking cows or spotting a sloth, into a memory you’ll never forget. Carla, Mario, Oscar, Irene, Demi, Isaac, and the entire team, from the grounds crew to the housekeepers, spa staff and cooks, pour heart and care into everything they do, making every moment feel effortless. Xandari Resort is more than a place to stay, it’s an experience, and every moment here leaves a lasting impression. Adventure, relaxation, and authentic Costa Rican magic await around every corner.

The people that work at Xandari make it a wonderful place. Carla was very accommodating and the women in the spa were especially great. My experience was really nice and I am glad I stayed here and did a spa package. I also did a meditation on Sunday morning and it was very relaxing and unique! The room I stayed in was somewhat average but the food was good. I think the spa is what really makes it all worth it. Beautiful well kept property as well.

Xandari Resort is a beautiful, serene, visually stunning property. If your vacation goal is peace and quiet; looking to "get away from it all", this is the place for you. The natural foliage is stunning! The villas are well appointed, the food is fresh and delicious! Every meal I had did not disappoint! The staff was courteous, friendly and gracious. The spa is a must do!!! All of the sessions take place in individual huts overlooking the mountain range. The sunset pool is too die for! If you're planning a trip to Costa Rica Xandari is a must do!!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Karla booked my appointment. She was super nice over the phone, and throughout the whole entire process from start to finish, because I needed her help even after I booked my appointment. Olivia greeted me, and checked me in. Diamond was my masseuse and esthetician. They all did amazing, and made me feel super welcomed, and taken care of my entire day. The ambiance was amazing. I chose the 4-Hour day in paradise package. I started off with a soak in a jacuzzi in my private suite. Followed by a quick rinse off in the shower provided in the suite. Then I got all my treatments. I started with a deep tissue massage, followed by a facial, followed by foot reflexology. After my amazing spa treatments were completed I was driven to the restaurant on site. Where I was able to enjoy a three course meal that was included in my package. Then I was escorted back to the front gate. It truly was a team effort that went into making my day as perfect as it was. I would come back again and again, and definitely recommend it to a family member or friend.

My children and I recently stayed at Xandari in CR and it was a great experience! There is so much to do at the resort in which you can hike their trails, enjoy their waterfalls, relax at the pool/hot tub, visit their farm animals, have a massage at their spa or simply take in the amazing views of your room of the city. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. The food here was fantastic and fresh! The rooms are always clean and well maintained. They also offer excursions if you are not sure and didn't book any in advance. I would gladly recommend this place to others and return. If you enjoy exploring and getting to know the people and culture of Costa Rica, try this place! Much more than just the beach. Thank you for treating us so well.

I have thought about this review for a week and struggled writing it…I’ll try to explain the best I can: Xandari is a truly beautiful property with stunning architecture and lush, well-maintained gardens that make every walk feel like a nature experience. The location is also super convenient—just a short drive from the airport, yet it feels like a peaceful retreat. Most of the staff were absolutely wonderful—friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our stay. Our room was spotless, very comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. We also enjoyed the mildly heated sunset pool and jacuzzi, which were perfect for relaxing while taking in the views. (We don’t recommend pools 1 or 2 because those are not heated) The only area that Xandari fell completely short was our dining room experience. This is literally in reference to the same gentleman that seemed to manage the restaurant both nights we were there, which ruined our experience… This gentlemen refused a request by my partner and I to move tables even though the restaurant was empty saying, “No, ‘this’ is your table.” He also did not bring us a drink menu and when I asked for the drink menu stating I would like an alcoholic beverage he said, “No alcohol, only still water, tea, or juice!” (Mind you, halfway through our dinner the couple next to us were served margaritas and right in front of us). The second night at dinner, we asked for tap water so we didn’t get charged for bottled water again and he seemed disgruntled that we ordered tap instead of bottled. He was apparently so disgruntled that he did not refill our waters all night. We sat there through dinner with empty water glasses while the table next to us got their tap water refilled along with their very own pitcher of tap water. When he gave the other table their own water pitcher, he made eye contact with us, smirked, and walked away. Long story short, my partner and I are clearly in the lgbt community. Was this a gay thing? We felt very strongly it was. We did not feel welcome here. If you enjoy awkward dinner experiences served with condescending passive-aggressiveness then this place is for you. Heck, if you enjoy something as simple as an alcoholic beverage or even water with dinner, then this place isn’t for you. Other wise, five star experience. Do not recommend.
