The 30 Best Restaurants in Munich, Germany | Eater

"Siblings Jakob, Theresa, and Xaver Portenlänger were all under 30 in 2018 when they bought a pub and spruced it up into Xaver’s, updating both the food and the culture of the traditional Bavarian style. The trio, whose family has run the Alter Wirt hotel in the Bavarian countryside since 1919, built on their long history in local gastronomy to create an exciting menu and vibe. Surrounded by dark green walls and velvet upholstery, guests can tuck into dishes such as lamb shank with parsnips and charred leeks, as well as a number of vegetarian and vegan options." - Kate Mann

A local we met on our flight to Munich recommended Xavers to us for an authentic dining experience- and we were NOT disappointed! The food, ambiance and service all exceeded our expectations! So much fun with our server Andre! He explained the menu- and gave great recommendations! Loved it and will def visit again on our next visit!

Amazing staff and hospitality! Only had the cheese plate and some here weissbeir but they were very tasty! I wouldve gotten the meat and cheese plate but I overlooked it. Food that went by looked and smelled great

The place has this really cool, modern Bavarian design, sleek but still cozy. What really stood out was the atmosphere… it was full of locals, which always says a lot. You could tell this is one of those places people from the neighborhood genuinely love. It made the whole vibe feel warm and alive. The staff were amazing, super friendly, attentive, and just good energy all around. It felt natural, not over-the-top, just genuinely nice people who enjoy what they do. And the food? Honestly, everything we had was delicious. You could taste the care in each dish. It wasn’t trying too hard, just really solid cooking with great flavors. Xavers just gets it right! great setting, great people, great food. Definitely coming back.

We had a really good time at Xaver’s: the food was good, the service was kind (although we had to wait long for our dishes, but the place was crowed, it’s understandable). I also really liked the interior: very cosy! The price is a bit higher than average (Schnitzel around 35€, we ended up paying 50€pp) and the food was good but maybe not such a great quality/price ratio. Overall still recommended, but possibly not the most convenient.

Great traditional German restaurant need reservations as it’s packed every night. Not many tourists mostly locals

Not traditional German food but very tasty, great service and nice seating (both interior and outdoor). Portion is actually very unGerman - meaning quite small - and pricy as well.

Nice experience in Munich, quick pit stop to refresh after 4 hours in the city. Local beer, nice service, we got the table even without the reservation. And the snacky snacky for today was brilliant - bio kasekrainer with gurke..nice, soft and cheesy... like heaven and perfect size if you don't want to eat too much just snack.

Steph, Chrisa, and the Xaver’s Staff, thank you so much for the amazing hospitality! We had an incredible time at this modern German beer hall. We arrived at 9 p.m. and got a table right away. The service was fantastic - friendly, knowledgeable, and spoke English really well, which was a huge help for us. They even gave us some fun spots to explore around town. The food was absolutely delicious! We tried the Bavarian Duck and Weinerschnitzel. The duck had a fantastic sauce and a hearty portion with tangy cabbage and riced potatoes. The Schnitzel was light, salty, and had a really great cranberry sauce to dip in for a new flavor. And of course, the beers on tap were amazing! The Helles was crisp and delicious, and my wife said she had one of the best Reislings of her life. This was our first stop in Munich, and it will definitely be hard to top.

Yelp
I love this place. The low lights and the wood accents create a very warm environment. The servers are all very friendly. Rent time I ordered a beer our server winked at me. We ordered the tartare, the 3 dips, the veal tongue, and the fish special with risotto. Everything was delicious. Highlight was watching one of the servers walking through the dining hall with a giant bowl of chocolate mousse to serve a table of guest.

Yelp
Xaver is a clean German pub located well away from the tourist masses of Marienplatz, and it was conveniently a 5 minute walk from my hotel. Xavar serves up traditional and modern German fare...elevated to the next level. In a city where you can get a German sausage just about anywhere, its nice to have something..."nicer". 5.50 Corn & Cauliflower Foam Soup...whoa! Smooth, creamy, corny, and creative. And healthy? 17.50 Roasted Catfish...wow! Roasted perfectly and spiced heavenly. 18.50 Wiener Schnitzel...you can find this everywhere in Munich, but Xavar's deep fried breading has some extra magic to it...traditional and delicious. Service was typical genuine German, not fake friendly American, efficient and cordial. If you're in the area, hungry, and sick of tourist food, come to Xaver's, we were also the only tourists here. Prost!

Yelp
This place was recommended by a local bar owner and I am SO happy we came here. It has such a great atmosphere and the service is great. It isn't touristy in the best way. Food was AMAZING and the drinks were very tasty. House spritz is super good.

Yelp
Even though it's obvious that they are trying a lot to differentiate themselves from a classic Wirtshaus both in the menu and the decoration they end up with indifferent if not boring tastes.
