Where to Eat Tamales in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"It is easy to find similarities between a few Guatemalan dishes and those of southeastern Mexico. Complex sauces like moles or recados, atoles, and ingredients like corn, beans, plantains, chiles, and tomatillos, speak to both a shared pre-Columbian territory and a colonial experience under Spanish rule. And although these cuisines may live side by side on the map and on this Albany Park establishment’s menu, they are different. Take the tamales, for example. Guatemalan-style chuchitos, a corn masa variety, are smoother, denser, and even drier than their Mexican counterparts. The meat is not diced or pulled, and instead, you will find they are stuffed with a whole chicken leg. But Xecul’s patrons rave about the rice tamales. Made with a ground rice masa, a very mild red sauce, pimento, olives, and raisins, this regional delicacy is wrapped in banana leaves. Their consistency is almost gelatin-like. The plate might at first be reminiscent of its Oaxacan cousin, but once you unwrap one, you will realize the similarity is only in presentation." - Brenda Storch

Ate here two days in a row and the food is just straight fire. The mango and orange infused water drink is elite. Not cheap however but nothing in California seems to be.

A hidden gem in the heart of Koreatown, Xecul offers a warm, authentic taste of Guatemala! My sister and I have visited twice, and as non-Latina/os, we were blown away by the kindness and hospitality—especially from the sweet and welcoming waitstaff (Anna is a highlight!). Knowing some Spanish helps (high school level + Google Translate worked fine for me), since the staff seems to speak primarily Spanish. Nonetheless, if you're willing to make the effort with rudimentary Spanish, the patient and friendly waiting staff should treat you fine. The cozy, colorful space feels like a true local favorite, buzzing with regulars (including even charming musicians on the weekend). Standouts include the rich and savory pepián chicken, tender and delicious carne asada, and incredibly refreshing iced juices. Prices are slightly high, but completely fair for the high quality. If you're craving something off the beaten path and full of heart and decliciousness, Xecul is absolutely worth the detour.

Incredibly courteous and the food was delicious. Definitely coming back to try out their lunch menu soon! PS: there is plenty of free parking in the plaza. And they have such gorgeous murals.

We came here a few weeks ago and it was the best we’ve ever had, great service. I recommend it to everyone I know. I came back today, all excited and got the same things as last time, enchiladas and the mango and orange drink, they tasted so different way off. We also ordered plátanos rellenos with crema, they gave us the ones with beans. Last time we came they made us feel so welcomed, today we felt like an inconvenience. Even when I payed she made it feel like I was an inconvenience.I asked, you guys have tap? she wouldn’t let me use it, took my card and swiped, said it’s not taking it. I told her right away I know it works. Then she gave me my receipt and you’re damn right I didn’t leave a tip. She lucky I didn’t go back and start a scene. She was rude to us and nicer to the other customers.

Came from TikTok! My dad took us here today because he had seen you guys on TikTok and wanted to support you guys. We’re from Guatemala as well (Totonicapan). The food was great and affordable, we’ll be back!!!

Yelp
Found it through Google. Had a friend in town from Texas that has Guatemalan roots and we decided to try Guatemalan food. Great experience. Good savory food. The service was friendly and the staff were attentive. Good ambiance created with the music playing.

Yelp
Honestly one of the worse experience i ever had ,not because they charged me 18 dollars for four tostadas with salsa only but I didn't tasted the real guatemalan flavor ,their pepian it's more like a simple chicken stew. Definitely I won't go back.

Yelp
The food and service is amazing!!! I come here very often and usually order the asada plate, caldo de gallina or the chicken breast!

Yelp
We came to this little cozy new restaurant next to Lucy's laundry Matt while we waited for our clothes to dry. I had a Guisado de res and my Boyfriend a Milanesa the pollo. Both plates were just delicious. Un Servicio de lo mejor. La amabilidad y sencillez de las personas que trabajan acá son lo que hace a nuestros países brillar. May God give this new restaurant many blessings and great success. Coming back Ps- they are missing may one or two TV para venir a ver los juegos de

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim. I got the Xecul breakfast with longaniza -- fried eggs, black beans, plantains, and excellent sausage split and griddled with a chunky salsa. I was impressed from the first bite, fantastic stuff. They seem like really nice folks and the place is cute, go eat!

Yelp
Family owned and run. It's good to see a restaurant like this in the community that serves great food. The service was amazing. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu!
