A hidden gem in the heart of Koreatown, Xecul offers a warm, authentic taste of Guatemala! My sister and I have visited twice, and as non-Latina/os, we were blown away by the kindness and hospitality—especially from the sweet and welcoming waitstaff (Anna is a highlight!). Knowing some Spanish helps (high school level + Google Translate worked fine for me), since the staff seems to speak primarily Spanish. Nonetheless, if you're willing to make the effort with rudimentary Spanish, the patient and friendly waiting staff should treat you fine.
The cozy, colorful space feels like a true local favorite, buzzing with regulars (including even charming musicians on the weekend). Standouts include the rich and savory pepián chicken, tender and delicious carne asada, and incredibly refreshing iced juices. Prices are slightly high, but completely fair for the high quality. If you're craving something off the beaten path and full of heart and decliciousness, Xecul is absolutely worth the detour.
