The Best Thai and Laotian Food in Philly | Eater Philly

"This popular hotspot in Center City is known for their spicy dishes and their expansive menu of Thai cuisine. Their delicious Thai chili lemongrass dish is perfection when served with sautéed onions, string beans, broccoli, mushrooms, bell peppers, zucchini, cabbage, and basil in fresh lemon grass sauce." - Ernest Owens

Although a little out of the way, Xiandu is one of Chinatown’s top Thai restaurants. The restaurant is split in two, with a bar in front and a more traditional dining area in the back. We were able to get seats without a reservation at 6 pm but it seems like they got a lot busier around 7! Even as crowds started piling in, our brilliant server was able to give us plenty of attention. She gave us recommendations and told us what her favorite dishes on the menu were. Our meal included Thai fried rice with chicken which was served with a fried egg and a perfectly runny yolk, alongside fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. The chicken itself was a touch bland but the the vegetables were well seasoned. The highlight of our visit and what we’d wholeheartedly recommend was their mango sticky rice. Definitely a dish you can rave home about. The coconut sauce was incredibly rich and the mango was sweet and tart, the rice was cooked with the perfect texture that we couldn’t help but smile after our first bite. We loved our experience at Xiandu and definitely recommend it to anyone in the city seeking an exceptional Thai restaurant! And seriously don’t leave without trying their mango sticky rice.

I went here to celebrate my birthday back in June and it was an amazing experience. The food was delicious and the waitress was courteous! The drink I ordered was very good. We will be back very soon!

We walk through the Walnut street, and always missed this unnoticeable gate, but inside is great room place to enjoy a quick meal or to have a dinner. The happy hour is 4-6 pm, you will enjoy the cocktails and beer.

Tl;dr: Overall 4 ⭐ despite a metal twist tie (see photos) found in the grilled salmon entree The metal twist tie notwithstanding, I enjoyed the grilled salmon entree in curry sauce. Thankfully the metal twist tie didn't harm me in any way, except for the psychological disturbance. The manager apologized and later offered some kind of coconut dessert (I didn't hear her fully) -- presumably free of charge 🤣 but I did not confirm -- but I declined and told her no worries. I understand this can happen once in a while, so I don't reduce their rating (or my tip). That said, I do want to mention it here so that if other guests run into repeat issues it becomes more serious.

A+ waiter! We had such a pleasant experience mostly due to our incredible waiter. He was very polite and sweet. He went above and beyond to write happy birthday on our dessert plate and even sang with my husband. We wish him the best in all that he does. My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner at the restaurant and the food was delicious. Not only did it look good, but it smelled and tasted even better. It was brought out quick— fresh and steaming! Will be coming back.

Google
Cute spot. Didn't dine in but ordered take out. Staff was very welcoming and had good sense of humor. Got spring rolls, curry puffs and shrimp pad Thai. Since it was take out, I didn't eat it fresh. I'm sure spring rolls and curry puffs would've been crispy if eaten fresh. But they both still tasted good even when eaten cold. The curry puffs had great flavors. Would definitely get it again to try it fresh and hot. Shrimp pad thai had decent amount of large pieces of shrimp. Good balance of flavor. Overall was good food.

Google
Super yum! Vegetarian asian dumplings with amazing sauce, delicious roti canai Indian pancakes with delicious curry dip. Amazing green curry with chicken. Delicious dan dan noodles with tofu. Highly recommend this place! Also worth noting they have a mocktail list that gives prices without alcohol included, but you can add alcohol to them. I found the menu confusing but worth sharing with others because I missed out on their amazing mocktail + liquor!

Google
Xiandu is a mix of Thai and Indian cuisine, a rare setup you see in the city. They have high tops and bar seating on the first floor (street level) with tons of seating up the set of stairs. The quality of the food and speed it comes out is great, with the only recommendation of sticking to “typical” dishes of that cuisine you’re looking for. For example, the shrimp Thai green curry is FANTASTIC. The Dan Dan noodles… not a much (but still good don’t get me wrong). The dumplings were very well made with tons of filling which I feel isn’t always the case and a great dipping sauce. Great for big parties (there were a number of 8+ groups) that were easily accommodated. Reasonably priced, good food, will be back.

Yelp
We went visited Xiandu Thai a year ago and the food was delicious minus one thing we didn't really care for. However overall it was some of the best Thai food we had in Philly and we used to live in the area years ago. We decided we had to come back and see if the food was still just as good and the results are in...IT WAS! First the customer service is still really good and the server was beyond friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is still super quant and perfect for a girls dinner or a date night! Now onto the food! We ordered the Sexy Shrimp appetizer, Pad Thai, Dan Dan Noodles! The Sexy Shrimp appetizer was good but we weren't really a fan of the dipping sauce that came with it. It was like a chipotle dipping sauce but I think the a traditional Thai Sweet Chili would have been better. But my, my, my the Pad Thai and Dan Dan Noodles were Phenomenal! Portion size was HUGE, flavor and spice was spot on and honestly, I wish I could pick up this restaurant and move it to DC where we are located! Still phenomenal and we will continue to return everytime we come back to visit Philly!

Yelp
Phenomenal place! I love Xiandu Thai and they offer a good deal Happy Hour and their menu overall has some great options. Drinks are made well and reasonably priced. I love good Hendricks martini But I also do stray away from some of their original cocktails. The Chicken Pad Thai is my absolute favorite here. I always ask for spice and extra peanuts! Never disappointed. The Drunken Noodles are also a go-to favorite. Their starter options are sized appropriately so you'll have room for dinner. Bonnie & Peter are remarkable and they have an amazing staff. Xiandu is such a kind and friendly atmosphere with a beautiful ambiance both indoor and outdoor. Located right on Walnut Street you'll see beautiful views from their full bar (with two TVs) and they also have a beautiful patio with spacious seating. I would recommend Xiandu for a cute lunch, beautiful romantic dinner and a place to really come have some amazing Thai cuisine!
google avatar

Gabby H.

Yelp
I loved the meal we got here! The portions were large and the food was SO good. We were easily able to split the Drunken Noodles and the appetizer and left feeling plenty full. The service was very attentive and kind. It was a great dine in place and was comfortable albeit a bit cold inside. Overall we really enjoyed our food and will be returning!
google avatar

Yelp
Big portions, nice staff. Drink list veers sweet. Online reservation system won't let you book for tables for 3, so call instead. A busy place. Very extensive menu. Decent portion sizes. Huge amount of seating.

Yelp
Great little Thai spot that has the classics. The Asian dumplings are served with a perfectly spicy dipping sauce that I wish I had kept through the meal. Lettuce wraps were fresh and delicious - the perfect amount and great to share. I ordered the pad see when (special item) and it was a chicken and shrimp dish served over glass style noodles with peppers. I wish it was spicier but it was a delight. The basil chicken was popular at our table. This would be a dependable take out or regular Thai spot if I lived in town. You know what you're getting and I can't see it really disappointing.
google avatar

Mina G.

Yelp
Came here for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Staff was friendly. Decor inside was nice. I ordered the pad kee Mao and really enjoyed it. The noodles tasted fresh, good balance between the sauce and spices. I tried to get it extra hot given it's a thai spot, their hottest was as hot as actual thai spicy but had a nice kick to it. Overall really tasty and would come back!

Yelp
My friend and I both got sick here after dinner...:( Even with that aside, there are three our Thai restaurants on the same block that do a better job.

Yelp
Awesome Thai spot in center city. Some competition from nearby places, but Xiandu really holds its own. Love their takeout as well!

Yelp
If you're craving Thai food and live around the city, you might want to check out this place. They offer a variety of Thai and Chinese dishes, good portions for the price, a cozy vibe, and excellent service

Yelp
My pregnant girl and I are coming from out of town and because of the long day, we decided we wanted to order food for delivery to the hotel because we were tired. After I paid for the food, a few minutes later I get some notification saying the restaurant adjusted the price of my order. I said on the instructions I would meet the driver outside to pick up the food from the car; trying to make it more convenient for the driver as possible. For whatever reason I'm unable to track the driver to even see where the order is in transit. The driver calls me to let me know food is here. I told the driver thanks I will come down from my room right this instant to pick up the food from you outside the hotel. I thought I was doing the driver a favor by not letting the driver walk out of their car. I go outside and no driver in sight with food. I called the driver and the driver says left it at the front of the lobby. Can you not read simple instructions?? Is this why I was charged $2 extra for this special request for making the driver life easier? If you order from them and want to get charged more than the final locked in price, be my guest. Avoid at all costs!

Yelp
I love it here! I always put up to go after a shift and it's constantly delicious! The portions are large so it usually lasts me 2 meals - both filling! Favorite place for a great pad Thai!

Joe S.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service. The place was very clean with a nice ambience. The server was very caring when I said I am a vegetarian, ensuring our table did not get any food that was not vegetarian.

Frank K.

Yelp
Our second visit to Xiandu and we were not disappointed. The Boo Heen was delicious as was the Pineapple Fried Rice. Service was attentive without between intrusive. The atmosphere is generally very nice. This time for lunch there was cigarette smoker finishing his lunch at the table right at the entrance. We were seated upstairs but the cigarette smell still reached us. Not sure why such a nice restaurant would tolerate a smoker indoors. Fortunately he left soon after we arrived, otherwise we would likely have left before ordering. That would have been a shame having to miss such a wonderful meal. Highly recommend you try the place for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
If you are looking for some really good Thai food this is place! For starters they have outdoor seating which I absolutely love. Another plus for me was the full service bar, with lychee martini as an option on cocktail menu. (My favorite drink) The Thai ice tea which is another fave was meh, it tasted watered down. I ordered spicy pineapple fried rice (spicy level medium hot) very flavorful. If you don't like curry this might not be the dish for you. The Tom yum soup and the Thai chili lemongrass stir fry was SO delicious!!!! I was very hesitant on ordering the lemongrass verse the Thai basil which is my typical go to. I'm SO glad I stuck to my decision because that was one of the best stir fries I've ever had. Last but not least the bok choy was very good as well. The staff was very friendly as well, I'll definitely will be returning next time I'm in Philly.

Yelp
Xiandu Thai is the go-to place for the BEST affordable Thai food in Philadelphia. We have been coming here since they opened many years ago and have always, always not only had incredible dinners, lunches, and happy hours, but the BEST service, always. The menu is varied, with superb choices all around, including great vegetarian options. The chef is extraordinary, and the real deal, who brings his Asian talent and experiences direct to you to enjoy. The two sisters - Nancy and Bonnie who own it are the Queens of Hospitality, always so cheery and grateful for each one of their customers. We love their endless kindness, and true devotion to making your experience outstanding at all times. Peter, the bartender is a hoot, with a very dry sense of humor, who is always willing to chat it up about the daily news around town and the world. I recommend this restaurant highly. You won't find another place like it- the sexy, modern decor and lovely interior design is perfect for date night, family get togethers, and office parties, of which my husband and I have partaken of countless times throughout the years. Go there for your. next lunch or dinner and don't forget about Happy Hour...it will be your favorite go-to place East of Broad!! Cheers as well. Everything on the menu is filled with flavor, and everything is so reasonably priced for the high quality it is. And Cheers (!!) to the amazing staff who love their job and their customers, always smiling and making your experience outstanding to make you feel so comfortable ...like you are dining with their family:). We eat here or take out at least once a week, and you should too!

Yelp
Everytime I am craving some good Thai food, Xiandu Thai never disappoints. I visited the restaurant with a group of friends and we all loved the dishes. We ordered the Thai Chili Lemongrass, the Pad Kee Mao, and the Pad Thai (my absolute fave). We also got 3 Thai iced teas which were so delicious and refreshing. All dishes were cooked to perfection and came out within 15 minutes. The waitress was incredibly friendly and answered all questions with detail. If you go, you must give the Pad Thai a try. I may be biased, but I promise you it is so worth it.
google avatar

Matthew F.

Yelp
Can I give it 3.5 stars? Went in with a group of 6 people for a sit-down meal. I feel I got the least interesting chicken dish out of all the people at my table, although it was still pretty good. But the killer dish were the dumplings; LOVED those. The jasmine tea was also good. Nobody had any complaints; overall good presentation.
google avatar

Leon J.

Yelp
If I could give it 10 stars I would! Great food (Beehion, DanDan noodles, pineapple fried rice, tofu baker) and great customer service. So many smiles!!

A C.

Yelp
The pad kee mao is 10/10. I've never had it before, so to translate, it's like Chinese takeout stir fry noodles, but thick ribbons of it, with the same satisfyingly greasy taste, except now spicy and with delightful sour explosions of tomato. Not fancy, but perfect comfort food. I felt OK about the summer rolls, those were pretty standard.

Marvin J.

Yelp
Excellent food, fresh, seasoned just right. Very nice inside, good staff, wonderful owner who is always there, usually working at the bar. Really good happy hour for both food and drink too. Definitely worth a visit, especially when in the mood for asian/thai food
google avatar

Yelp
Pros - Sangria was really delicious! - Timing of the food coming out to our table was perfect. Loved that they served the appetizers pretty quickly, waited till we were done then brought us our entrees instead of crowding our table with everything - Server was attentive and friendly. He came to check on us and our waters were always filled - The laksa was so flavorful and amazing....brought me back to my time in Singapore! - Roti was really yummy, but I do wish they gave a little more sauce with it! - Offer indoor and outdoor seating Cons - No easy parking nearby - a little overpriced for the entrees - Interior space is a little tight
google avatar

Chetan S.

Yelp
Great place, staff is quick and attentive.. some good vegetarian options as well.. taste never disappoints on any of the standard dishes (pad thai, yellow/ green/ red curries etc.).. they have some good drinks as well.. there's this lovely lady (think she might be the owner) who takes time to come and check or have a polite conversation with you..

Maja H.

Yelp
I got take-out Massamon Curry here. I was very good in all respects. It was ready quickly, the staff was friendly, and the price was reasonable. Very tasty. I wish I lived near here so I could have it often.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Insane. Absolutely insane how much this hit the spot!!! Feeling a little under the weather and stuck in a hotel for work, what's better than Thai and curry. They called to make sure I was ok with the spice level on the Laska, the way it comes is a medium and is perfect. The exact right balance of heat and flavor. Tom Kha hits and the Roti Canai is so delicious. 15/10
google avatar

Areej S.

Yelp
Pricier than typical thai food, so need to take off a star - you can get the same quality of food elsewhere for cheaper. However, I love that you can choose your spice level. When you tell them to make it spicy, they actually do. I've been here a few times but discovered their khao soi recently - it was hiding this whole time! Soooo good.
google avatar

Yelp
I came in during a rather busy Saturday night and made reservations ahead of time. Unfortunately my guest was pretty late and we had to give up our reserved table. This was to no fault of the restaurant who patiently tried to give us an additional 30 mins before giving up the table (both of us had to be there to get a table). We ended up seating at one of the bar tables, which was small but otherwise wasn't bad. I ordered the Pad Khee Mao with chicken, as this seems to be the popular item among reviewers. It was a bit bland as I'm used to more flavor with this dish, but at least it was just $14. I wasn't too excited about the overall experience but it's an okay place to eat at.
google avatar

Miles A.

Yelp
Overall was decent experience. Nice interior space and welcoming area. Friendly people inside. Price is good for plate size. The dishes were a little underwhelming though, taste was good just seemed generic. Not necessarily a bad thing, but wasn't phenomenal or unique. It's still good food at a good price. Good spice level on drunken noodle. Thanks
google avatar

Anusha S.

Yelp
Takeout Review Got the pad kee mao and pineapple fried rice, but was really disappointed with both. The noodles were really mushy and soggy and the flavor of the dish was mostly salty. The pineapple fried rice was quite bland. I would not recommend Xiandu Thai for takeout, might be willing to try it in person to see if the quality is different.

Richard ..

Yelp
Green chicken curry was very good! Summer rolls also delicious. The portions are good, could be pricey compared to the other options.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
Back in Phillie! Friend suggested here and they accepted an on-the-spot outside reservation while I had a half hour to kill. We focused on appetizers of spring rolls, eggplant and tofu and steamed veggie dumplings plus a jasmine iced tea. (One demerit: I found the green dough dumplings rather bland to taste, even with dipping sauce--I'd work on the seasoning a bit.) Great food, service and atmosphere!
google avatar

Nancy E.

Yelp
My favorite Thai spot in the city! Food is always amazing. We always get the drunken noodles and a curry that comes with rice. Lots of flavor a tad spicy so make sure to adjust your spice level if you can't handle it. Service is always great too! The vibes are also great! Best Thai spot in philly!
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Food was exceptionally delicious. Drinks were delicious and the service was excellent
google avatar

Yelp
Still one of my favorite spots! Got the mango martini and pad kee mao this time and it was just as good as I remembered.

Yelp
Back to Xanadu after a year of being locked down and so thrilled to see if they're still open and delivering the same great service and excellent food as always. Came for a pre-concert dinner with my honey had an amazing experience overall great for couples great for parties. We start off with two appetizers one Samosa - potato carrot corn onion and fresh dill with a yogurt dipping sauce really nice flavor and two the Asian - Thai roadie pancake filled with barbecue duck onion bell pepper corn and avocado wow a winner again a must have. I could've made a meal just out of these. For our entrée we had the angry beef with the marinated flank steak with grilled zucchini and a red wine Tom Yum sauce need to order medium rare nice and tender really interesting flavor due to the red wine and compliment that my wife decided we should also have a traditional pad Thai on the table so we had pad Thai with shrimp. Again excellent dish time in time out will be back again see my pictures
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here. Got the Xiandu Chicken...it hit the spot! The chicken had the right amount of crisp to it, and the vegetables and sauce made it feel not too heavy at all. Super easy to order online. Walked over from Jefferson to pick it up. Was ready right on time. Looked like a great restaurant to dine in at.
google avatar

Jeanne T.

Yelp
This is my Phili go to restaurant. If I finish work early you will find me at a table in Xiandu Thai. I will be having a generously poured glass of Chardonnay and some pad si ew. Sometimes, I order the crispy spring rolls and they are nice too. The pad si ew is freshly cooked with tasty veggies. I really enjoy this dish. The lady who show me to my table is very welcoming and friendly. The waitress I've had a few times in no nonsense but she gets the job done. The seating in this restaurant is very comfortable and the restrooms are clean. I look forward to my next trip to Phili so I can return.
google avatar

Nidhi P.

Yelp
Food was average but the service was great. The mango sticky rice had really sour mangoes. I know they can't taste each mango before putting it on our plate but we weren't able to finish the mango because of the sourness.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Got takeout from here! Ordered pineapple fried rice and pad see ew. Both were very solid and had very distinct wok-hei taste. Service was very prompt and wait staff were polite as I waited for my food to pickup (got there a little early.) The interior is very dim lit and it's a very intimate ambiance, and the seats and table were very clean. Pineapple fried rice needs more pineapple and extra sweet chili on the side. Proteins should also be cut a little smaller.
google avatar

Rula R.

Yelp
We came here after few drinks at an event and we were starving. So excited to try this place! We got the roti and curry. SO good. And I got the cumin beef I believe. It was also flavourful and the veggies were pretty fresh which I can appreciate. Little pricy. But hey, it is centre city after all.
google avatar

Lea D.

Yelp
I love Thai and I am always on the hunt for the best pad Thai I can find. When I was out and about in Philly after a work trip, I came across this place and knew I had to try it out. The cocktail was so tasty, as was the spring rolls. The pad Thai was scrumptious. I ate almost every bite and I didn't feel overfull, just full and satisfied. Our server was super nice, as well.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
The best chicken Thai fried rice .... Ask for the sunny side egg! It's fantastic! Yum!
google avatar

Audra D.

Yelp
This was an order for a loved one. He said it was amazing. The pineapple rice dish was amazing. The lettuce wrap was delicious and pad Thai was even delicious. It gave him 2 days of meals. Spice level was on point. Delivery was fast and prompt. This is the 3rd order I've had delivered to him from here, Keep up great work.

Yelp
My Fiancé and I came here on NYE 2023 for dinner prior to making our way to the river for the fireworks. We arrived just before 7 in the nick of time because shortly after we were seated it filled up! Our server was friendly and quick as a ninja! She would come from nowhere continuously checking on us throughout our meal. She also gave us spot on recommendations and answers to questions on food and drink taste. Our meals were excellent and so were our cocktails. We would gladly return in the future.

Kitty L.

Yelp
Loved this place. The staff were all so friendly and attentive, the food came quickly, and the prices were very reasonable. I had the vegan Pad Si Ew and it was delicious

Yelp
Still One of My Favorites We moved out of the city last year and used to live just a few blocks away. We had a chance to go back last week and it's exactly as I remember it. The food is just as great as I remember it. It's still my favorite place for Thai. But it's the people here that we look forward to seeing. They are genuinely great people and every time we come in, there's always such a big welcome. We try to come back whenever we can. This time was for Waitress at the Academy of Music and I hope we get more opportunities to visit in the future. My only regret is that we couldn't order more since we were afraid to have leftovers and wouldn't be able to carry it into the theater. This place is a treasure! Go and make sure the owners know it! Love the Lychee Martini, like always, and they always remember! (Still) Recommend: Roti Canai Thai Basil Singapore Pai-Koot Pad Thai

Yelp
Excited to have outdoor seating and dining experience despite the pandemic. Location is great and located with many shops around. A very eclectic selection/combinations of food to eat! I ordered the duck entree and the laksa noodle soup. Laksa soup was on point but I feel they are skimping out a bit on the condiments compared to other places I've been. The duck was good, it is sweeter sauce and gives a good portion size. I was disappointed with the roti because the chicken that comes with was small, wish it was a bigger portion or charge more? The service was good, they were very accommodating but the tables were extremely sticky. Not sure if thats the case with the regular tables inside. Recommending this place but could not say it was great as I have had better thai experiences. I will definitely try again as it is local and has a great selection.

Yelp
Found this diamond in the rough while searching for Thai food. Came after visiting the Museum with my daughter (on 12/26). A fifteen minute ride by uber from the museum. The restaurant is cool with Thai/Asian influence. The service was good, our waitress was pleasant and always stop by to make sure we were satisfied with our food and drinks. After surfing the menu we decided to go with the Crispy Spring rolls, Red Curry which came with jasmine rice and the Pad Kee Mao - similar to drunken noodles. Typically their food is spicy but you can always request they decrease the spice level. My cocktail of choice was the Martini Lychee...yummy Haven't been to many Thai restaurants in Philly but this one is on my list to come back to.

Yelp
0/5 Ordered from this place before I began reviewing on Yelp but this needs to be said. The services are atrocious. The order was placed via doordash and the lady called me and demanded tip when I said I would tip once I receive my food. Then she just hung up and I couldn't even track my food because they used their own delivery man. So I don't understand the service charge I get on doordash when they don't even use doordash drivers. Since I couldn't check on the status of the delivery, I had to keep calling back to see when the food would arrive. It was over 20 minutes late. Didn't get a single apology over the phone. Didn't get an explanation or an apology from the driver. Of course I still tipped because he made the trip. The food was soggy. They bag was dripping with who knows what. And the fried rice was cold and bland even though I asked for it to be very spicy. They need to up their service game or the food game. And I recommend dine in. Do not order out.
