The 38 Best Restaurants in Taipei | Eater

"Eateries dishing out re chao are an integral part of Taiwanese dining culture. The atmosphere at these ultra-casual eateries tends toward large, raucous groups, and the food — salty, oil-drenched, and inexpensive — is the ideal accompaniment for bottle after bottle of cold Taiwan Beer. The city is inundated with re chao, typically festooned by red lanterns. Xiao Lin has garnered cult status for its exceptionally fresh seafood, ranging from fried clams, thick slices of sashimi, shrimp balls laced with pineapple and mayonnaise, and buttery, fat prawns dipped in soy sauce and wasabi. You’ll also find reliable versions of grilled steak and other re chao staples like three-cup chicken and stewed stinky tofu. [$ - $$]" - Clarissa Wei

For a 熱炒 spot, this is a great place to dine with a group of four or more. The dishes were served hot and full of flavor. We were too busy enjoying the food to take many photos—only managed to snap one of the steak dish. Highly recommended—it was juicy, tender, and packed with taste.

A restaurant that would have been higher rated had the service & atmosphere matched up with its good food. FOOD - Beef is a must-try for steak lovers. Ordered it medium rare and what we got in return was a delicious dish which was tender & really well cooked. - 空心菜 was perhaps the crunchiest vegetables I have ever tasted. Thought it went well with the flavourful stir fried clams which was flavourful. - Deep fried pork ribs was fried to that right degree of crispiness. Tennderness & crispiness were both achieved. SERVICE - Perhaps it was 10pm. Perhaps the staff were tired. But the general vibes from the staff were less than pleasant & far from welcoming. Quite atypical of what one usually comes to expect from Taiwanese culture. Think the most amusing was when I was 'nodded' to my table when I approached the staff. ATMOSPHERE -Decent. No frills place.

Good food. Excellent drinking atmosphere. Only problem is the servers. They were impatient and rushing us. Probably because of customers waiting in que.

Quality has changed a bit. Overall dishes were still tasty but sadly 2 dishes did not live up to its name. 1) bitter gourd with salted egg barely had any salted yolk and was super watered down 2) pig kidney did not have any sesame oil taste and was also super watered down. It was only good after we added sauce from another dish.

Tried it several years ago, seafood noodles didn’t seem as good. The preserved radish omelette was good, grilled squid was nice. But NTD 1170 for these 3 dishes is pricey, ?? ripped off tourist.

Good food with numerous choices. The business is unbelievably GOOD starting at 1700 all the way to closing. The chef truly knows how to tailor to his customers with his cooking. All his dishes are common among all these fast serving restaurants but he lays his magic touch on these dishes which taste SO good. Two things I don't like this restaurant. The dishes are salty. The head checker has her attitude problem. Not sure what's on her XXcking mind 🤬.

Affordable and authentic Taiwanese food in a cramped and casual setting. Was really loud and we had to shout to talk to my dinning companions. Food wise, flavourful and full of wok hey. Particularly love the fried rice - robust soy sauce flavours! Reservations required. We called last minute and was given slightly more than an hour to order and eat. Popular place.

Google
A seafood restaurant where the best dish is the steak. Chewy squid, charcoal snails, average prawns.

Yelp
What the word of mouth about this place and what's been written are very true-- you NEED NEED to make sure there's enough attention for you to get a table-- otherwise it's harder than trying to get a bartenders attention when the tips are flowing. Either come within the hour they open or call for reservation. Especially big parties- don't just show up and expect to get food. But the food does come out pretty fast once you place the order. Everything is made fresh and over tremendous amount of heat and wok. You can taste the aged wok-ness. But don't depend on service being self explanatory if you're not from here-- grab your own drink from the fridge at will if you can't wait. The octopus mouths are.. so interesting in texture. Reminds one of what an eye-hole would taste like, not too greasy and fried to a puckering crunch. Satisfying in all the ways to those who cares not of intelligent souls. The sea snails were fresh but not nearly as great as their clams with basil. My sister wanted two of those and they go fast. The meat is small and the shells are plenty but so is the basil and chili all around. Love love their use of herbs and ginger. They do a really great 水蓮stir fry. Just perfect crunch and crisp. The baby Napa was very flavorful as well even though I'm not usually a fan of tiny shrimplets... it does add a nice grimy salty flavor you can't add otherwise.

Yelp
This quick fry restaurant specializes in seafood and does have some unique dishes. During dinner time this place gets really busy and your seating time will be limited. They asked me to return the table in an hour which was fine since the food came out fast. This place is much more expensive than your typical quick fry place. I would estimate it is about 50% higher price than your average place. That would be fine if the food was great. However, I didn't find the food to be special. Food: 3.25 stars Value: 3 stars Overall: 3 stars Recommendations: don't order the stinky tofu unless you really enjoy the braised kind (it is not the deep fried type) Based on other reviews I ordered the stinky tofu. I really couldn't eat it because the texture was so off putting. However, I am not a stinky tofu fan. Given the price premium and difficulty in getting a seat I will unlikely come back.

Yelp
We stayed at a bnb close by. Went by around 6 pm and was asked by staff if we had reservations. I said no and asked if we could reserve for tomorrow. They said all tomorrow's reservations were all booked, but I could come back tomorrow around 5 pm when they open and check for availability. We came back the next day and they had a table for us. Excellent stir fry dishes. Fresh and tasty, not greasy. Everything was "light" not heavily sauced, the way I like it. Couldn't remember all dishes we ordered, but they had an excellent bitter melon, salted pork dish, 地瓜葉 (di gua ye), sweet potato leaf, etc. Go! Bill for five adults and three kids...$3500.

Yelp
Beside you call in advance for table... Or else u r not going to dine there...their servings in general are not bad. Two most dishes that I love the most are grill beef and their stinky tofu.

Yelp
Food: 5.0/5.0 everything here is really good, favourite dish is the steak, as long as you don't mind some medium rare blood in your meat. Gets 5 stars just on account of the food. Service: 3.5/5.0 the waitstaff is okay, usually you have to call them over to order or get anything. Drinks you get yourself from the fridge, except for beer which you can order from the beer girl. Price: 4.0/5.0 decent prices, not too expensive

Yelp
LOVE. THIS. PLACE. It's one of the best seafood stir fry places I've been. Our favorites are: grilled squid, steamed shrimp, stir fried pork neck, fried rice, stir fried mutton, AND THEY HAVE THE BEST STINKY TOFU IVE EVER HAD!!! It's really amazingly stinky and awesome! If you go, definitely try it, it's steamed and flavorful, and all the fermented goodness will spark your gut flora!(not in a bad way) Anyway, make sure you make a reservation even on weekdays cos it's PACKED! Have fun!
