An Expert’s Favorite Sesame Balls at San Francisco Dim Sum Restaurants | Eater SF

"As mentioned, Clement Street is one of those take-friendly parts of town: Everyone has a favorite dim sum spot and argues about it like Denzel or some other great debater. The sleeper hit is Xiao Long Bao. It’s not a question, it’s pure logic. Cash-only, $3.95 for three sesame balls. Served in plastic, these are dark in color, oily, and best smacked in the car out front." - Paolo Bicchieri

6/19/2025 update: Whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I always have to come by and grab some shrimp rolls $4.60 (order of 3.) Their regular egg rolls $4 (order of 3) are good too. Alternating between each one gives a good contrast of flavors. The next thing you know, all six rolls are gone. It would be nice if they had some red sweet and sour sauce or maybe some sort of ginger vinegar egg rolls sauce for dipping. But it doesn't really need it. The wait was only about five minutes today at 1pm. Great job everyone at Xiao Long Bao. Original review: Xiao Long Bao is a take-out only dim sum restaurant. No indoor dining. We stand on the sidewalk and eat in front of the restaurant anyways, so no biggie. The other two dim sum take-out restaurants on Clement are more busy. So, if you are in a hurry, go here. The other two places are better, but not worth me waiting another 15 minutes. Our favorite items here are the fried crab meat dim sum and their crispy shrimp egg rolls. Both are filled to the brim. The beef pancakes are good if they are fresh. We came at noon-ish and the pancake wasn't crispy anymore. Regardless, I do recommend this establishment to our community.

despite getting my order wrong, this was a nice little spot to get tasty lunch for a cheap price! my boyfriend and i stopped here in hopes of trying soup dumplings, but i guess the server misheard me and gave us both regular dumplings. i was bummed because soup dumplings were what we came for, but i was also pleasantly surprised when i tasted them. very delicious and they give you a very good amount for the price (about 12 or so for $5-6) i’d say definitely stop here for food, but make sure they get your order right!!!

I purchased 2 beef pancakes, 3 scallion pancakes, 4 panfried dumplings, and 3 steamed chive dumplings. I was in a hurry to leave so I paid with my card and left. It wasn’t until I got to my car, I received a charge for $52.50. After calling and confirming the prices of the items that were purchased, I brought the food back to the store and received a $26 refund. Buyers aware!

When on the road and working you try and eat best you can, when and where you can. This hole in the wall only takes cash, you will walk away with either a plastic bag or a container of sorts and the folks don’t have patience w/ you if you’re not quick, clear and confident in your order. Whatever…the food is worth it! 🤌 It seems to all be made in house and sells off quickly which means they are producing and cooking all day as best they can to keep up GREAT value and simply good👍

The skin on shrimp ball were thick. The shrimp noodle was ok. The service is ok. It’s easy to over purchase. I got 8 order came out to be $37 something

We tried a few different dishes (beef rice noodles, lotus wrap, sesame ball, shrimp & chive dumpling) but none of them really hit the spot, they were good but not wow. Prices are fair, service is speedy and they accept credit card.

Google
Tasty Dim Sum in the Richmond, freshly prepared and lots of different dishes, potstickers, fried wontons, shrimp ha gao and more. Credit card accepted. Busy at times. Beef onion cake or green onion cakes are pretty good. Try the crispy Radish Dim Sum, sold out most of the times. If you are allergic to MSG you should stay away from the soup noodles, like wonton or beef noodles.

Google
Xiao long Bao restaurant in Richmond District, SF. For cheap take out Xiao Long Bao these aren’t bad at all. They also have pan-fried baos as pictured but these are NOT sheng jian Bao, a lot more doughy and less flavorful - no soup inside. Also, the dough is very sweet which i don’t like. They also do scallion and beef (pictured) pancakes. In terms of dim sum, Good Mong Kok is much better and bigger sizes. If you want cheap and tasty Xiao long bao, come here. The other baos are just ok. .

Yelp
My brother in law loves soup dumplings. So when we all went to San Francisco the first thing he looked for was good soup dumplings. We found Xiao Long Bao on Clement Street. It was small and very busy. The place was clean and they did have tables to eat at, but most were full. He ordered his soup dumplings. They were really good! I love that you can watch them make everything right as your ordering. Everything is super fresh. There was a constant line in the restaurant which is always a great sign of good food. I ordered the steamed buns and they were delicious! In fact it was my first time having them and I am a little obsessed with them now. I am always looking for them now. The same way my brother in law looks for soup dumplings when he travels. I even saved some for my plane ride home the next day. It was totally good cold! I've even tried to make the steamed buns at home and it was a complete fail. I guess I need to visit Xiao Long Bao again!

Yelp
TLDR this is a neighborhood takeout spot for mid-tier dim sum, the 4 stars reflect the taste/quality based off this specific tier. That said this is a place I must visit whenever I'm in the area and I'm sure many others feel the same way as there is always a long line. The standout dish is the fried shrimp dumpling, prob the most unique and delicious item on the menu and it is a MUST order. Think a normal steamed hagao but deep fried -- crispy on the outside with a soft chewy rice wrapper in the next layer, and then a savory shimpy hot center. It's a masterpiece. Pro-tip: pop it in the air fryer for 2 mins when you get home, DO NOT use the microwave. The other items are standard fare -- siumai, chasiu baoS, fun rolls etc. they all taste good and the restaurant offers good value for everything. When I come here I buy abt $50 worth of various dim sum, and eat it over the next few days.

Yelp
I enjoy going to this place to get dim sum when I am in the area. The service is pickup only, and they get busy, so the staff tries to get you out quickly. There is no place to sit because it is just for going, but I love the food.

Yelp
Thanks for reverting back to the old siu mai recipe. It is very much appreciated. Will continue to go back.

Yelp
I went at 8:00am on Sunday morning. Everything that I ordered was hot and tasted fresh. I say go super early for the best food experience. I think price went slightly up again. $14.25 for 1 order (3 pcs per order) of: pan fried shrimp & chives dumplings, BBQ pork bun, and shrimp roll. The lady in the back taking order is not friendly, as always, but I think I'm getting used to that by now (haha). Take out only.

Yelp
Favorite place for shrimp and chive dumpling on Clement. Especially when fresh and hot.

Yelp
Clement street in San Francisco has many great dim sum options. There are plenty of dim sum places between 6th and 8th avenues on Clement. The block between 7th and 8th avenues on Clement has one of my favorite dim sum places in San Francisco. Xiao Long Bao has one of the best shrimp roll and shrimp rolls in the city. This is the true meaning of value and both quality and quantity. Go to Clement street to get the good dim sum vibes, Xiao Long Boa has all types dim sum with shrimp and chives
google avatar

Tony L.

Yelp
This is a dim sum to go place that a lot of local people come to, for reasons I don't understand. The dim sum was not fresh and the Xiao Long Bao (Shanghai soup dumplings) were dry. The service was a bit rude, which is to be expected from a Chinese place when you're speaking English, but not when you speak the exact same language (Cantonese/Toisanese). The quality of the food did not justify the service and I have regrets of buying and trying so much food here since we went to the farmers market immediately after and I didn't have much room left in my stomach. There are definitely better options that my other friends recommended (like Dragon Beaux and HK Lounge).

Yelp
Yes I still go here! The lady who works here is like the modern day version of a poor man's Edsel Ford Fong so if you want rude service without a smile, this is your place. The dim sum is good and fresh if she is not too lazy or cheap to make you something that isn't ready yet.
google avatar

Kamy T.

Yelp
Come here for the fried shrimp rolls. The best I've had. Filled with shrimp meat and absolutely delicious. (Note: I've had an experience where I've gotten a veggie spring roll instead of shrimp since they're placed right next to each other in the stand). The fried dumplings are good as well. Have cash on hand and I recommend looking at pictures of what they serve so you know what you want and feel less pressured when ordering! Service is efficient.
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
Come here primarily for the Baked Char siu bau and the har gow and siu mai. Depending when you go there may be a short line but while waitiing make sure you know ahead of time what you want to order because when you are up, the people behind the counter can sometimes be abrupt even if you speak their dialect. For non-speaking non-Asians I have witnessed during my last vist where a female who used her credit card to pay was about ready to leave when the person helping her shouted out "Hey - sign" in a rude loud voice. 4 stars for the quality of the food and size of the baos compared to other places but 2.5 for customer relations by the staff.
google avatar

Yelp
My swore by this place. Eh at best. We had 6 items. All were cold. I hate COLD Chinese. Dirty looking place. Nice people. Below average
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Definitely recommend! Their fried shrimp rolls are fabulous! Love their xiao long bao and bbq pork buns.

Gail L.

Yelp
Be sure you know what you want and have cash ready. The line goes fast, and the workers want you to be ready for your selections. Don't forget to check out the steamed dim sum that is by the front door. I missed it the first time and had to get back in line to order some items. Their card reader wasn't working; and if it is, you need to purchase at least $20 in order for you to use your card.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my 'go to' no frills place for dim sum. My favorites are the turnip cakes and the fried shrimp & cilantro egg rolls which is the only place I think that makes those kind of egg rolls. So many choices and I spend way more than I originally intended to, but nothing goes to waste for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Visited this spot because Good Luck Dim Sum was closed. Ordered the following. Potsticker - Meaty, good flavor. Skin was very greasy. Cilantro Shrimp - Barely any cilantro. Curry Chicken Bun - Good amount of filling but was bland. Shu Mai - Very meaty but a little too salty. Chive Shrimp - Good amount of chive to Shrimp ratio. Skin was not too thick. Best item of the whole order. However, I've had better take out dim sum else where. Dry Shrimp Rice Roll - The rice sheet is thick and doughy. Did not come with any sauce, so it was bland. Ended up throwing it away. Lotus Rice Wrap - Rice was inconsistently cooked. However, the flavor was good. Mystery Bun - (was supposed to be turnip cake) was actually taro. Good amount of filling to bread ratio. Not too sweet. Total was $35. Tip: Pay attention and confirm they are giving you what you ordered.

Yelp
Always a tempting choice for my take out dim sum if the line isn't too long. Service is quick enough and it's both English & Chinese language friendly for ordering. Great place to order in bulk & have 2-3 days worth of dim sum as it reheats very well for most items. Easy cheat to bring to any pot lucks or gatherings if you arrive early enough to ensure stock. Noted for good Xiao long bao and take out dim sum

James C.

Yelp
Bad service. Mediocre food. They will let you twist a little in an otherwise empty shop before bothering to serve you. I was turning around to leave and go to one of the other five places today when they finally acknowledged me. Har Gow: Pretty meh, no whole shrimp. Shrimp Puff: Garbage. Threw one away. Worst I've had. Su Mai: Ok. Some gristle but that's traditional. Potsticker: Decent, good filling but poor noodle texture. Also they force you to buy 6, but since it was the best thing I ate there, w/e. Sold out of noodle rolls & pork buns. Xiao Long Bao looked cold. Might get again on Mon or Tues (Good Luck's closed days) if desperate, but will try every other place on the block first.
google avatar

Yelp
I like this place. Large selection of perfectly good, inexpensive dim sum. They accept credit cards for orders over $10, and they label their items in English for the Gweilo like me. Smart move--it eliminates the "What's in this? What's in this? Is there meat in there? What is that?" of the clueless and inconsiderate. Service isn't as abrupt as some other places. Personally, I like abrupt. It keeps things moving, but it was unexpected and kind of nice to feel a bit welcome. The dim sum: There are at least 10 varieties of steamed bao and these are what they do best. Unfortunately, their namesake, XLB, is not a standout. I haven't gotten them hot out of the steamer so that might make a difference, but when they're lukewarm, you notice that the wrapper is a little thick, and they're not very juicy. I love their fried shrimp rolls and sesame balls filled with red bean paste. Potstickers, shrimp and cilantro dumplings, deep fried har gow, scallion pancakes all pass muster but aren't especially memorable. I'd call them reliable--the food is pretty good and never disappointing. Yelp prompts us to write about ambience. No ambience required for a tiny, takeout-only storefront. If you are on Clement street and don't want to stand in line for a long time, give them a try.
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
First off this place is open at 8am and it's cash only. Please try a little of everything because it's honestly delicious! My favorites are the pork or beef pan fried bun, shrimp eggroll (out of this world) and anything out of the steamer - har gow, shumai, lotus sticky rice. The service is fast and when not busy, friendly! Be patient with them and they will be nice to you. The ambience is meh. I mean it's alright no seating. I feel like it's meant to be on-the-go. Plus the Golden Gate Park is near so why not make it a picnic! It does get busy, specially on weekends at lunch.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
No frills. Chaotic. Lines. Crowded. Delicious. Come and try and come back. Best steamed veggie buns I've ever tasted hands down. And the items are all labeled in Chinese and English so there's less mystery than similar places.
google avatar

Dominic B.

Yelp
Came to Xiao Long Bao on a weekend afternoon with the intent of only getting one thing - the pan fried pork buns. Keep in mind that these are different from shengjian bao. When I arrived, there was only one person in front of me. Ordering is counter style and you can order off the menu or from the list of dim sum items they have visibly displayed. I was able to order right away as they had another person taking orders and the food was packaged immediately for me to take to go. Although fried on the top and bottom, the reminder of the bao was very soft and nice to chew through; not overly doughy or dry. Inside was a sizable portion of pork that was juicy and flavorful. You can also get these as beef. I believe they come in orders of 3 as I asked for 5 and they gave me 6, but it's all good as I thoroughly enjoyed them with friends and family. Due to the size and quantity, you can definitely be satisfied after just a couple.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
We stopped by to grab some dimsum for a picnic. Many of the places around were closed or mostly sold out, so I'm glad we stumbled on this place. One of the few places around that takes credit card too Good variety of dimsum. The flavors are there, especially for their shrimp and chives dumpling. The skin on the dumpling and baos were hard and not chewy/soft as they should be but that might partly be because we got there around closing time. Otherwise the texture of the fillings were also a bit too soft. The service is typical of a counter style dimsum spot, quick and a little blunt but that's part of the experience! Some things were sold out but we tried a decent variety Dumplings: Shrimp and chive, mixed one with egg, shrimp hargow - great flavors with sometimes hard wrappers Bao: bbq pork bao - pretty good but the top layer of the bun was hard Turnip cake - good! Beef scallion pancake - tasty, tiniest bit too oily
google avatar

Christian C.

Yelp
Some of the best baked BBQ pork buns I've ever had. Meat to dough ratio was insane. Would recommend. They take CC as well
google avatar

Luisa S.

Yelp
FOOD WAS BUSSIN! This little hole in the wall is amazing. Got so much food for such an affordable price, and we got our food right there and there. It was a super quick transaction. I will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Cole W.

Yelp
Watch out with this place their scam is to rush you and add more things than what you actually ordered and then over charge you on top of that.
google avatar

Bradford C.

Yelp
I found this place on a Google search since I wanted to expand my Chinese restaurants in the Richmond. I can't say I recommend this place. They had fewer options than other places, and it wasn't as good as people suggested. We ordered the shrimp Cheung fun, pork and shrimp shu mai, and an order of the sesame balls. The Cheung fun was ok. The taste of the shu mai was fine, but not mind-blowing. Finally, we went home and realized that they completely forgot to give us the sesame balls. The workers were nice and friendly and the noise level was ok to have a room level conversation, but it's hard to see myself coming back here. The search for good dim sum in the Richmond continues.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Do not go here. I was purposely overcharged. They forgot to add stuff to my order on top of that. A double whammy. Cashiers and workers are clearly greedy. Will report this.
google avatar

Ellen H.

Yelp
Xiao Long Bao is a take out dim sum spot in San Francisco's Inner Richmond district. Prices are reasonable, but the quality is pedestrian. Go visit Hong Kong Lounge on Geary for way better dim sum. Safety Pluses - Online menu, Delivery services available, online ordering. Food Review: Steamed pork buns ($3.45/3) are big and probably the best bet. 7/10 Sesame balls ($3.25/3) are huge but greasy and doughy. 5/10 Deep fried pork dumplings are also very greasy. 5/10 Lotus leaf glutinous rice is huge. Not a lot of filling. 6/10 Overall - Good Food - Good Decor - Fair Service - Fair Value - Very Good Would we come back - Maybe
google avatar

Calvin T.

Yelp
It's so meh, whenever Wing Lee is closed we would go here to give them another chance, but I think we've reached the final time with our fourth try. The dim sum is all hit or miss, the good and reliable items are their baos. The XLB is mid, har gow has thick and doughy skin, fried shrimp puffs are soggy, and rice roll skin is 3-4 times too thick. They also charge way too much for what they offer, probably the most expensive take out dim sum in the area for the most mediocre taste. Also, they don't even try with the service, it's chaos in there with all the steamers going, frying in the back, and plenty of yelling.
google avatar

Teeds K.

Yelp
I can say that I've been here 2 times so far and there will be many more visits from me. I opt for this choice since there was a long line on both ends of streets for other dim sum choices. I ordered the xlb - of course! Easy to eat as it comes in cute foil liners. Literally you can pop them in your mouth. Not much soup left in them but still good! Shrimp lovers - shrimp egg rolls - like diced up shrimp in egg roll form with cilantro. It's a a must. Super crunchy and tasty! Fried shrimp puffs - again another memorable one! Diced up shrimp put into a wonton wrapper and deep fried ! Similar to the shrimp egg rolls, but different. Just try both! Pan fried pork dumpling yo. So good, so filling ! It can be beef or pork. This was packed with flavor and filling so it was on the heavier side. Another filling one is the egg, meat and vermicelli one that's shaped like a hand pie! It's super heavy so try to eat half so you can sample the other choices! Pass up on the Har gow and siu mai here - smaller and not as tasty as the other spots on nearby blocks. So for next time, I'd wanna try some baos. The steamed ones and maybe the shrimp noodles. There's savory and sweet. For the baos - so I'll have to get a few to try out so I can pick out my favorites and actually have a "go to" or a recommended for people who ask what to get from here.
google avatar

Domonique C.

Yelp
There's something special about going in pointing to my favorite dim sum dishes and leaving with a feast all within 5 minutes. This is a place for people who already eat dim sum and know what you like. When you walk in you have to know what you want to order. This is a fast paced environment and they will skip you if you aren't ready. The service is quick and they'll box up exactly what you ask for so be specific. The food is displayed in cases making it easy to see what's available. The best thing on the menu is the shrimp rolls. They are so crunchy and filled with shrimp. The shrimp puffs are great as well. Honestly, everything tastes great and is worth trying.

Yelp
Great service! Fresh food. A real San Francisco Gem!! In&Out quick and efficient service. Very close by my house super convenient!!! Must try Fried Shrimp roll, pork xiao long bao, pork shu mai, and of course fried shrimp puff excellent!!!

Yelp
This is our go-to Dim Sum restaurant in SF. whenever we're heading through the city, we always stop in on Clement for some great bites here. our favorites are the chive and shrimp dumplings, sesame seed balls, potstickers, steamed buns....too many to list. Great options for everyone.

Yelp
Do NOT come here. I made the mistake of coming here only because Good Luck Dim Sum down the block was closed for the day. The ladies that work here are mean and rush you like crazy. They humiliate you in front of everyone in line, even if you're clearly not Asian and doesn't speak Chinese. They also tried to trick me and charge me more. When I ordered one order of the dumplings, which usually means 3 dumplings, she gave me 6 and said one order is 6. I called her out on it and she put 3 dumplings back and changed the price. Dishonest, mean, and rude. Don't just take my word for it. This is evident from the other reviews for this place. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. Learn from my mistake. I will never come here ever again. Especially considering many other dim sum restaurants are on Clement. Shame on this place.

Annette J.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this place used to be my favorite Dim Sum place to go before the pandemic. They have let the inside of the restaurant really go, and it is extremely filthy. The attitude of the servers is some of the worst service I have ever had in any restaurant ever in my entire life!!! It's really difficult to stand in line and wait as the server's sneer and laugh at you and talk about you in Mandarin. Then when it's your turn to be helped and no one is in the restaurant and on one is in the line for the takeout Dim Sum, they ignore you and pretend they are very busy cleaning!!!! I stood there for 10 minutes while they cleaned and ignored me, and I finally left. WOW don't bother to go there if you don't speak Mandarin. They will treat you like horribly!!!!!!! Service F- Ambiance F- Food F-

Yelp
Shrimp egg rolls are fantastic! We loved the bbq pork bao buns which had a lot of stuffing. We also liked the shrimp dumplings with hot sauce. You need to be fast and decisive on your orders they have a lot of people waiting! They take cards. Yes, we will be back.

Yelp
Pork bun is big and has tonssss of filling unlike other spot !!! Go get it now. Parking is hard so be patient
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite spot for dim sum in San Francisco, reasonable prices and it's mostly all made in house including in the front window. Seating for maybe a couple of people. Go to new may wai store and buy your favorite dipping sauce and go get dim sum and then drive over to Golden Gate Park and you can have a full on picnic.
google avatar

Brock P.

Yelp
This is a straight forward dumpling house, get there early to get the freshest first cooked of the day. Place gets busy with a line out the door. Cash or they do take credit cards for orders over $10. One of my personal favorites is the chive dumpling, they are awesome. Plan on taking your order to go.
google avatar

Jason X.

Yelp
Love this place - no frills, quick grab-and-go dim sum. My favorites are the buns (pork and veggie, shen jian bao) and dumplings. Decent filling to bun ratio and the buns are usually good so I don't mind. Nice service.
google avatar

Yelp
The apparent school of thought on Xiao Long Bao is that a competitor, one block west on the opposite side of the street, is better. As I sat in the car, waiting for my son to return with a bagful of dim sum, I looked at yelp and saw a trusted friend make that observation. Then someone remarked as much after seeing my yelp "check-in". When my son returned to the car he also noted that his brother preferred the place in the next block. I think there's enough love for both. I wasn't even hungry but the sackful of great looking dim sum sat before me and I failed to resist it. For a delightfully reasonable price of $17 this would've been adequate for 2 even if I'd actually been hungry. I barely know what I was eating but I liked it all and wouldn't hesitate to return. Oddly the XLB was my least favorite of the items sampled but there's so much on the menu that it'd be a cinch to replace that with about 30 other options in the future. The place up the street might be good but there's room in my heart for both.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
I had read about this place in some article about the best dim sum in SF. I dunno, I wasn't impressed, I had a scallion pancake and a fried pork bun. Both were mediocre, barely warm, and extra greasy. There used to be a place in the earlier block of Clement - it has been closed for a few years, RIP, it was the bomb, and their pork buns were about $1.75. Still I miss it when I walk by (still an empty storefront)
google avatar

Theresa N.

Yelp
This was my third time getting dim sum from this place but the first time a cashier stole my money. I bought: 3 shrimp egg rolls, 1 order of xiao long bao, and 3 baked bbq pork buns. Total should have been $13.40 per their prices on their updated website. Cashier saw that I had a $20 bill in my hand and said "twenty dollars"! When I asked her if that was right, she nodded yes. I called the place to let them what happened. Let's see if they will even call me back! I'm never going back there again!

Yelp
I keep coming back for the chive and shrimp dumplings. Wonderful spot for delicious bites and comfort food.

Yelp
Ive been craving for this dumplings since i saw it in tiktok, its really cheap and the food is good.
