"From crab xiao long bao to mooncake, it’s crab everything at Xie Bao, a new stand at the New York Food Court in Flushing. For Xie Bao’s viral signature dish, a mix of prized roe from the Chinese hairy crab (aka mitten crab) and meat from local blue crab gets stewed in broth and then poured over either rice or noodles. This rich yellow mother sauce also makes its way into the rare-in-NY 100-percent-crab soup dumplings (most others are also filled with pork)." - Caroline Shin, Eater Staff

"This stall in the New York Food Court on Roosevelt Ave puts crab roe—a Shanghainese specialty—front and center in many of its incredible dishes. If you order just one thing at the counter (the first on your left when you enter), make it the silky, comforting crab roe over noodles. But you really shouldn't order just one thing. Add on the chicken soup with crab roe and satisfying hunks of pork skin, or the flaky yellow croaker in noodle soup." - carina finn koeppicus, kenny yang, neha talreja, bryan kim, molly fitzpatrick

"The mere thought of crab roe sends us into a moony daydream. Glorious crab roe. Beautiful, soft orange dollops of crab roe. Sorry, where were we? If you can relate, you’re going to love Xie Bao, a stall in Flushing’s bustling New York Food Court that puts this one amazing ingredient—a Shanghainese specialty—front and center in many of its incredible dishes. If you order just one thing at the counter (the first one on your left), make it the silky, comforting crab roe over noodles. Like multiple dishes at Xie Bao, it’s served with wood ear mushrooms, vinegar, pickled veg, and a soy egg—and there are also complimentary cups of lightly sweet, lightly floral jujube tea. The add-ons are welcome, but the thin noodles are just as excellent adorned only with buttery roe sauce. It’s a testament to Xie Bao’s all-around quality that—if you order correctly—many of the supporting-act ingredients shine just as bright. The satisfying hunks of pork skin in a pot of chicken broth, for example, or the flaky yellow croaker in noodle soup. photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff You’ll receive a buzzer to let you know when your meal is ready, or—depending on how aggressively you ordered—when each part of your meal is ready. Every time it goes off feels like microdosing Christmas morning, as dishes like roe-stuffed meatballs, pork-studded zongzi, and crab roe mooncakes start accumulating in front of you. The food court is uncrowded enough that you’ll find a place to sit, but not so empty that you’ll raise eyebrows among the diners eating lunch, as you try to fit all the black plastic trays on your table, like a horizontal game of Jenga. In case you need more space to spread out, consider Xie Bao’s second location in a strip mall in Edison, NJ. Food Rundown photo credit: Alex Staniloff Crab Roe Noodles The sauce is the perfect balance of salty, sweet, and creamy and the noodles have a lovely chew. You can even get free noodle refills, if you ask nicely. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Crab Roe Meatballs Pockets of salty roe are buried like treasure in the center of two gently molded pork meatballs. (Are we absolutely positive this isn’t what awaits us within the Earth’s innermost core? If not, start digging.) We also love the star anise notes in the thickened, slightly sweet sauce, and the crisp-tender bok choy. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Crab Roe & Chicken Soup Pork Skin Pot Floating in a pot of light but meaty chicken broth, the gelatinous pork skin absorbs so much flavor. Get this deluxe, restorative dish if you feel some sniffles coming on. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Yellow Croaker Noodles Chopped pickled greens add brightness to perfectly cooked noodles and tender, buttery fish. We love this Shanghai specialty as a contrast to the crab, but if you want to maximize the amount of crab roe per bite you consume here, order the yellow croaker and crab roe-soaked rice. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao The crab roe mooncakes and spring rolls are more gimmicky than delicious, but the only dish we’ve actively disliked at Xie Bao is their soup dumplings—the wrappers were a little undercooked, the filling a little gritty." - Molly Fitzpatrick

Inside of New York food court which has other shops and restrooms (could be cleaner but it’s doable). We got the rice with crab roe and it’s as expected! Great flavor with loads of rice. Could use a bit more crab roe on the ratio but overall filling and delightful. Took a bit for the service as the main person was just in the back prepping and didn’t pay attention to the front.

😛 BE AWARE this is a specialty dish. You pay for its PARTICULARITY so don't expect to be wowed as if you were buying a main line dish. It's crab roe with rice or noodle 🍜 For what is aims to be it's GOOD. Be aware that the 🦀 CRAB is light!!! It's more noodles with crab flavor. Good 👍

We got both the noodle and rice and definitely felt like there could be more crab for the noodles! Also the crab definitely has a strong scent to me but it could be just personal preference. Loved the soup dumplings, will definitely be back for it again!

I ordered the noodles to go so I'm sure they would've tasted better if I ate them right away. I like the packaging (separation of toppings from noodles), but if they were just packaged in separate containers, it would be fine too. The DaFeng fish soup with noodles were delicious, the soup had such depth of flavor and the addition of the sour mustard and pickled side was a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, it definitely needed more soup. The crab roe noodles were good, but was it phenomenal? No, not really...and it needed way more of that crab roe topping. The ratio to noodles was way off. The stackable bowls don't leave much room for soup or toppings.

The crab roe flavor is so delicious! We tried it over rice, but definitely curious how it would be over noodles so will have to try that next time. The crab roe is rich in flavor but not overwhelming or fishy - great for seafood lovers. Texture is smooth and silky. Staff were so nice and hospitable. Came with some little side dishes and should try the vinegar with it too! Definitely recommend this spot!

This gem is hidden away in an unassuming food court. We ordered both the crab noodles and the crab rice . But I recommend the noodles over the rice as I think the rice soaks up too much of the sauce so if you don’t eat it right away it becomes too dry. With that being said all the food and side dishes were very tasty. The flavor of the crab really comes through.

Enjoyed my bowl of crab and crab roe rice — it’s super flavorful and rich. Well worth the try. Would come back to try the mooncake that everyone’s raving about. One negative is they mixed up rice vs noodle, but wasn’t a big deal.

When I heard about this place, I just had to catch a train out to Flushing to try. I so miss crab roe from my time in Shanghai and it’s not the easiest thing to find on menus. It’s located in a food court but very well organized with a touchscreen you use to make your order. They have several different preparations for the crab roe. I went with it served atop noodles - my favorite - and it was very solid. Lots of creamy crab roe with meat and it went perfectly with the noodles. I found the price also to be very reasonable for what it is. I’ll be back!
