Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Floats a Liquor Tax Increase in His 2025 Budget - Eater Chicago

"XOchimilco, a Mexican restaurant that opened in 2018, is caught in the middle of a century-old liquor ban zone in Lincoln Square and Ravenswood. The ban affects three blocks and the restaurant is advocating for its repeal, with support from 47th Ward Ald. Matt Martin. They argue that lifting the ban is essential for their business as liquor sales are a critical revenue stream, especially in the aftermath of COVID-19 dining restrictions." - Ashok Selvam

I was blown away by how friendly and accommodating they were here. My husband, myself and my 4 year old daughter came in and they were immediately very accommodating to our family. I have celiac and they walked through the only 2 items that cannot be prepared gluten-free and then noted it's a dedicated fryer and they take care to keep those few items away from the other prep spaces to avoid cross contamination. They assured me I would be safe eating there which was so incredibly kind. Now onto the food! We had fried plantains, panuchos and flautas. All very flavorful and fresh. We also ordered the horchata and a margarita which were both great as well. I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu!

Google
Wonderful experience. The staff sat us right away, took our order and food came within 20 minutes. The portions were generous and the flavor was all there. Everything on the menu looks delicious and as a Mexican I can attest for it's authenticity and quality. Update! Came back for more and the mile enchiladas were delicious. Everything was of high quality and delicious. The flan de coco was yummy! Don't sleep on their desserts.

Google
Great spot for groups, especially with the BYOB option. I would recommend bringing a bottle of tequila, as they sell mixers. Service is consistently excellent and persistent. Pleasant patio seating on days with good weather. I would recommend the chicken flautas, as they’re my favorite thing here. Portions are not large. Rice and beans are simple but pleasant.

Google
Really enjoyed this restaurant. The food and service were amazing. The waitress was incredibly attentive and accommodating. One of the best BYOB restaurants in Chicago.

Google
We've ordered from XOchimilco a few times but finally went to the restaurant for dinner. The vibe is very much that of a chill Mexican restaurant, but the dishes and plate presentation are much nicer. The friendliness of the staff and quality of service is excellent. They checked in on us frequently, but not so much that it was bothersome. The food came in super fast as well. I would highly recommend trying the Panela appetizer (grilled cheese), the taquitos. We also enjoyed the lamb shank entree — the lamb was super tender and the bean super very flavorful. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant!

Christina Huynh

Google
The food was extremely disappointing. We got the camarones a la diabla, pollo en mole, lamb shank, and caldon de camaron. Everything was bland and undersalted. It was such a shame because the lamb was extremely tender and the shrimps were juicy. The chicken mole was the worst dish with burnt, bitter chicken and a mediocre mole. The only passable dish was caldon de camaron. Though the staff was very helpful and friendly, it didn't make up for the food.

Google
First time coming in along with my family and we all had a terrific experience. There was a good variety of choices and we were very happy to have vegetarian options- which were all very tasty and had a great presentation. The service was awesome. Lucy, our server, and her sister, went above and beyond and surprised us at the end of the meal with three delicious desserts. Thank you for taking such great care of us, definitely will be back!

Google
First time dining. The food flavor profile for all the dishes was excellent. The lamb shank was tender, falling off the bone. Try the jamaica Palmer for a different take on the traditional Arnold Palmer. The Ribs were also tender but lacked that texture of eating them from the bone because of the tenderness. Only in my opinion. they are just a bit overpriced for just a half slab and corn. All in all, it was still an excellent meal and service. It's definitely a must visit.

Yelp
This is a wonderful little local spot. I wouldn't say it's fancy, but it's a family friendly, group friendly, date friendly restaurant with excellent food! We had reservations on a Saturday evening and had just a bit of a wait while the first seating was clearing out. There is not really a lobby to wait in, so it can get a bit crowded, but staff and patrons were very accommodating and everyone handled it very well. They now have a full bar and we were able to enjoy some well made cocktails with our dinner. The cocktails were between $12 - $14, so not too pricey. Everyone enjoyed their dinner choices! The table ordered the Camaromes a La Diablo, Camaromes al mojo, lamb shank (excellent) and Tampiquena (excellent). I would love to go back the next time we are in town!

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here because most of their menu is gluten free. They are super gluten free friendly as well. I got the steak taco dinner. It comes with a lime and I highly recommend using it on your tacos because it makes the flavor really pop. My girlfriend got the chicken tinga tacos, and even though she is a baby when it comes to spice, she loved them. As they are a delicious gluten free friendly restaurant, we hope to visit sometime soon.

Yelp
A fun little BYOB spot! If you bring tequila, they'll bring you mixers for margaritas (which looked outstanding!). My friend and I had wine, which they provided glasses for. They had a $6 corkage fee, which wasn't bad at all. First off - everything we ordered was BEAUTIFULLY plated. It was a really nice element to the entire meal. I had the taquitos as my meal and I was surprised how much I liked the dish! Not only was it pretty, but I loved the crunch of the outer shell combined with the juicy, not dried out chicken, and everything accompanied it so well in terms of flavor and texture. We also split the mango cheesecake which was adorable and delish. A nice little treat to round out the meal. The servers were also very sweet throughout the entire meal! I wouldn't describe the ambiance as upscale, but casual and comfortable, and would definitely recommend if you're looking for a chill byob spot!

Yelp
Reviews brought me here so I had to come back and leave one! Food was incredible, service was fast and polite... it was busy and the food still came fast! I would definitely go back again! Party of 6 so glad I made a reservation because they don't have a lot of big tables.

Yelp
Pretty pricy Mexican restaurant. Easily goes over 100$. But it's good. Tampiquena is pretty tender and large steak. Lamb shank is super tender and strong flavor. Not quite like the pickled onion but not too much.

Bob W.

Yelp
Been here multiple times with the wife. The food and service has always been great. Also had vegetarian friendly options :)
google avatar

Yelp
I came, I crop-dusted, and I consumed four orders of the bottomless chips and salsa :)

Yelp
Amazing food, service and it's BYOB!! A hidden gem! Stoped here on a rainy Tuesday night! I ordered the traditional enchiladas with roasted tomatillo sauce. My date got their lamb shank, he was obsessed! Never seen a man so happy with his choice of meat before haha. We skipped on dessert but they all sound amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing! Every single dish we ordered was a 5/5, with the taste, presentation, and friendly and efficient service all being on point. We ordered the chicken taquitos, the carne asada (cooked medium), and the peach cheesecake. The carne asada was super flavorful and super tender, probably the best I've ever had. The cheesecake was also super delicious and one of the best dessert items I've had so far in Chicago. A few notes, it is on the more expensive side but we felt like it was worth it given the high quality of the food. Portions are also on the smaller side, but again, we felt prices were worth it. This was one of my best meals so far in 2024!

Yelp
What a great neighborhood spot. Flavorful food, super friendly service, BYOB. We had the ceviche to share, I had the Dobladas Potosinas, and my husband had the steak enchiladas. Delicious and sizable portions. The complimentary chips and salsa were also quite tasty. Will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Yelp
The food, service and owners are incredibly great!!!!!! Went there to celebrate friend's birthday!

Eva S.

Yelp
The food is wonderful. It is a family owned business and the customer service is excellent. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We stopped by for an early dinner and it's a good thing we did because by 6:30 the place was packed! Really great food and service, we got the guacamole appetizer, and the Dobladas and Enchiladas entrees. Everything was delicious! We were too full for dessert but will definitely be visiting again!

Yelp
Favorite Mexican food I've had in Chicago thus far! I cannot explain how good this food was. It was also served more authentic as compared to a lot of the Mexican restaurants I go to in the city. Loved that this was BYOB. They have mixers available if you bring your own spirits. Their salsa that was served with the chips was nice and spicy!
google avatar

Ta S.

Yelp
Quality flavors and quality cooking! At first, I thought it was pricey but for the way the dishes are cooked to perfection, I think it's a really solid deal. The sauces are sooo yummy - it made me so my happy food dance! every salsa hiiiitt the spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Sat outside, casual sit down restaurant. Service was fast and friendly. Free chips and salsa were served. The salsa was a little too spicy for me. I had the Queso Azteca (Baked Chihuahua cheese with Huitlacoche (corn truffle), roasted corn, onion, cilantro & poblano pepper strips. Served with flour tortillas.) I liked that it was unique. I enjoyed it! I had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce. They were so good, plenty of meat inside. It was served with a small salad, black beans, and rice.

Maytee M.

Yelp
The service is EXCELLENT and the food is fresh and delicious!!! We needed to accommodate 15 ladies last minute and they went above and beyond. We were over the moon happy and will keep coming back. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable.

Morrissey S.

Yelp
Thank you for a great night, had my birthday here this weekend, party of 12, we may have been a bit loud and needy, but the staff was top notch, food was great, served in a timely manner, you guys do an awesome job!!

Yelp
Excellent service and delicious food. Sat outside on the patio under the cute twinkle lights. Will return!

Yelp
I enjoyed the meal, decor and energy Saturday. The Birthday girl brought a Kirkland jug of margaritas and another wine. Service, food were very good and we'll be back soon.

Yelp
We love Mexican food. And this one is exceptional! The food is authentic and elevated. Great flavor - everything we ordered is delicious. Try the seasonal special - I was super impressed by the octopus with butternut squash purée. Price is great for the level of food and services. Nice place for casual dining and group gatherings! Five stars!
google avatar

Margie T.

Yelp
Flavors were delicious! Service was very attentive! I could be jamming to the music all day long! At the start of the dinner rush, they dimmed the lights for more of a romantic feeling! The tables filled up pretty quickly for a Sunday.

Yelp
No bells or whistles going on here. Just down right delicious Mexican food being served. This unassuming, middle of the block restaurant was packed on this blustery snow flurried night; and I know why - they are making sensational traditional Mexican cuisine here. Their menu had every classic dish (plus way more) you could ever find at any Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I had chicken enchiladas that were fantastic. It came with rice, beans and a salad for only $20; it was a crazy good dinner at crazy good price. My wife, who was brought up in East L.A. and was always surrounded by the best Mexican cuisine outside of D.F. (District Federal / Mexico City) and was very impressed with what she ordered - The Dobladas Postosinas. She loved her dinner. It's a BYOB restaurant that is ready for your libation by giving you everything you need to build your cocktail, pour your wine or chug your beer. It is quite noisy inside, but that's because everyone is enjoying their food and being part of this scene. The service was great and the vibe was Party'ish [sic]. Will I come back here and try different selections they offer - Hell Yes!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been searching all my life for this restaurant. Absolutely delicious, upscale and elevated Mexican food with neighborhood vibes, prices and clientele. BYOB rocks and they give you an ice bucket, scoop, and salted glasses? Come on. Complimentary chips and salsa hits your table the second you sit down. The service is so impeccable. And the food is sooooo good. I'm going to have every birthday here forever. We sat on the patio which couldn't be cuter, but very lively atmosphere inside as well. Come here on a day you need to be delighted.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not sure that's going on with all the great views. We ordered cerveche, enchiladas and taco dinner from the kids menu. Honestly, everything was underwhelming.... enchiladas were cheesy but tasted bland. The steak which cost additional $2 was hard to chew. Ceviche was nothing close to traditional style... kid didn't touch her taco which I think was because the chicken was very dry... service was quick (almost too quick which made me wonder if everything was freshly made...). 1 star for food and 5 star for service (equal weighting until I come up with better calculation).

Yelp
We came here for dinner on Saturday at 7:30. The place was pretty busy so it was a good that we made reservations for two. It's nice that the place is a BYOB. We brought our own tequila and ordered the margarita mix which tasted very good. The accompanied chips and salsa had a very good spiciness. I ordered the carne asada which was one of the best I had in a long time. The steak was cooked medium and was perfect. I actually used the salsa on top of the white rice along with the steak. My wife really enjoyed the camarones a la veracruzana shrimp dinner. I tried some and enjoyed it as well. The service there was very friendly and attentive. The parking there was little hard to find but it was a Saturday evening. I dropped my wife off at the door and eventually found parking. This place is our new Mexican go to place.

Yelp
Accidentally came across this place while walking by. It was at lunch and luckily it was open for a quick bite and more. XOchimilco is a more but not totally authentic Mexican place. Has some pretty good ass chips and salsa, but the rest of the menu is pretty meaty with things like beef and chicken. The prices are kind of high it seems. Coming here the first time, we didn't know it was BYOB. It means they have no alcohol, including margaritas. That sucks, and we were tempted to leave, but stuck around and got a few things. Also this place isn't exactly vegetarian friendly. There was little to choose from, and we had to settle on the Guacamole XO. It's $11 for a modest amount. Spicy stuff, made with cilantro and serrano. It came with a lot of chips. The price was just too high, but the spiciness was authentic and not just a bunch of chipotle powder tossed into avocado like how some places do it. Even though there's no alcohol, we could come here again. It's great for a light lunch. There's not much for vegetarians, but the guacamole is a nice idea for a get together or takeout.

Eric F.

Yelp
This BYOB Mexican spot is a gem. Great service, great food. The ceviche is so good. I've never had a bad meal here
google avatar

Yelp
Sweet staff, friendly, attentive and offer good descriptions of dishes. Flavor filled menu. Washroom is so nice, comfortable, well lit and decorated that it is almost confusing.....who was the genius who put this together?
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
Amazingly friendly service, great food, and byob! We come here all the time. The food is all really solid, great portion sizes, well executed, well seasoned. The highlight is always the staff/service. They're unbelievably friendly and super attentive without being overly so.

Yelp
Cute little place I found while heading to the movie . I was hungry and this place pop up . BYOB only . They only have soft drink . Didn't get an appetizer at all just my Meal and my Entree . I had the 3 Très léché to go but it was spoiled . Was too tired to call and say anything . Disappointed yes . That's my favorite desert . I had the fish And mash potatoes dish and it was 37$ and that's was a little bit expensive . The 4 start was for the spoiled tres lèche

Yelp
You know that treasure you find and that you weren't looking for? So, you don't want to share because then you get less of it....lol Yep, I've been hesitant to post a review on here even though I've been raving about this place and bringing all my friends and fam over the last year or so. Everyone has loved it! Not only is the food delicious, but also looks like the pictures. IG foodies will love it! I always want to come back, the next day. I personally love the sauces, big fan of the dobladas potosinas. The food portions are just the right size. Have you tried their horchata latte? Hot or cold, you won't be disappointed. It is also byob. The service is always great. My water is always full and all the servers are always attentive and pleasant. What I love most, is this is family owned and operated and a minority owned business. Parking is decent (meter) around the area, but depends on when you go. Be mindful of permit parking on side streets. It is about a 5 min walk from the Montrose brown line.

Edward E.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! I'm not sure which I like better, the staff or the meal. Both are absolutely fantastic. I'm Mexican so I friends and I only enjoy my mom's home cooking. However we all agree the food here is excellent and the staff is the best. My favorites are the XO steak, lamb shank and salmon.

Yelp
Stumbled on this place while My Husband and I were in the neighborhood for an appointment. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to see us right away. The staff is very friendly and efficient. This place is family owned and you can tell. We shared the ceviche For an appetizer, it was very tasty. I only negative is that their tortilla chips could be a little thinner and not fried so hard. But the salsa served with them was very tasty. My Husband had the Seabass and I had the steak ranchero both were excellent. The BYOB factor makes this place an excellent value. I liked the set up. They had for margaritas and you bring the tequila. We finished off the evening with the Tres Laches, it was so good. I had to take a piece home for a friend of ours.
google avatar

Hanna S.

Yelp
These folks have the magic touch. Everything that rolls out of the kitchen is fantastic. Make sure to get the queso Azteca, even if you think you don't like some of the ingredients. My mushroom-refusing husband was inhaling it, huitlacoche and all. Given the choice, I'd come here for brunch. The sauces are so great that simple eggs and tortillas are the right foil. This is absolutely worth the ride from wherever in the city (county?) you are.
google avatar

Arie R.

Yelp
Everything was really good! This place was recommended by a friend and it was quite delicious. Ordered the chicken enchiladas, veggie quesadillas and Dobladas Potosinas. The chicken was moist in the enchiladas but there wasn't quite enough cheese or sauce. The Dobladas Potosinas were very tasty and had a good flavor. The veggie quesadillas had some really good veggies inside, although it wasn't that much portion wise. Service was excellent, our waitress was really nice and attentive.
google avatar

Annamaria L.

Yelp
5+ stars here man!! Service, absolutely incredible!! Super friendly and inviting place. Food was phenomenal! I ordered the mole enchiladas and I was loving every bit of it. The man got his standard steak tacos which were a big thumbs up from him. Dessert was "Abuelita chocolate " flan... get this!! It was bad ass!

Yelp
It's a nice little place on Montrose. Street parking was easy. We arrived at 7pm on a Friday and didn't have to wait for a table for 2. By the time we were leaving, there was more of a wait. The server was really nice. In terms of the food, I'd have to say that the best thing of the evening was the salsa that comes free with the chips. It was really good. Packed a punch and was very fresh tasting. I tried the veggie al pastor tacos, which I found to be too sweet for my liking. The filling was basically cauliflower. The marinade/seasoning was bright redish orange and was too sweet. The tacos also come with this solid block of a soft cheese, which was ok. While the tacos were so-so, the cheese enchilada was better. We got half ranchero and half tomatillo sauce. I liked the red ranchero sauce better. I think overall, it was fine. The black beans on the side could've been more flavorful. Lastly, one of our next door table neighbors had gotten a tres leches cake and it looked divine, so we were tempted and also got a slice. It was fine. The strawberry syrup topping wasn't that great. Overall just ok. I appreciate the nice people and the good effort for a small locally owned place. That's always a win and thus my extra star.

Yelp
Great food, great service. Loved everything about this bustling, energetic, very casual family owned Mexican restaurant. The dishes were so authentic: I lived in Oaxaca years ago and the food was so reminiscent of my days there. Not cheap but fairly priced and love that the are BYOB. We started with an order of guacamole- very good . I had the carne asada and our friends had the mole chicken and short rib. A plus- all of it . Neighborhood gem. Highly recommend!

Isaac C.

Yelp
My girlfriend picked this place and usually I'm a bit skeptical of her choices but this restaurant blew my mind! Excellent service, everyone is so attentive and kind and the food is just amazing definitely will be back soon! Oh I almost forgot this place is BYOB! The Environment inside is lovely and vibrant, they also have a patio section! Our server Paula is superb! One of the best places I ever been.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Wonderful tacos and cute ambiance. Small, family run place. Our service was incredible. The food was really amazing-- I had the Al pastor mushroom tacos. It is also BYOB.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
What a find! We were a party of 8 and called ahead for a table reservation. The menu is more complex than what you'd expect. The service was so friendly and attentive. And the food was outstanding! Best part was that my dad has celiac and of the entire menu only 3 things could not be made gluten free. He was over the moon and so were we! Felt like gluten free freedom!! We will definitely be back.

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the service was great. Had the Carne XO and it was so tender. Queso Azteca was great too.

Rich D.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service! Nice outdoor dining area along the street. BYOB, so plan ahead.
google avatar

Ann J.

Yelp
Mind blowingly good food. Got the lamb shank and the bistec ranchero, and the depth of flavors were so well developed. I wanted to go back immediately the next day, but it was a Monday and they weren't open. The Queso Azteca blows every other queso we've ever had off the table. Trying to get more folks to go with so I can sample as many plates as possible!
google avatar

Colleen T.

Yelp
I went with a group for a few birthday celebrations. The staff were all so accommodating and friendly. The food was delicious. I had the salmon, it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Two of my friends had the special and were very pleased with it. My other friends ordered the more traditional meals and loved them. We all really liked the food, and the service. It is a BYOB , they have the mixers if you bring the alcohol. We wil definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food , friendly service , my second visit I hope to be a regular visitor! Try the shrimp Veracruz

John B.

Yelp
Really great family spirited upleveled Mexican food! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and even the salsa had a great secret family recipe twang. Delicious!

Max W.

Yelp
Awesome place. Family run shop both front and back of house. Family from around Mexico City. Sophisticated dishes. Had lamb shank and ribs which were great. Service was exceptional.
