‘Street Food: USA’ New Orleans Episode Features Yak-a-Mein, Sno-Balls, Po’ Boys, and More | Eater New Orleans

"I watched Miss Linda, known as the Yak-A-Mein Lady, explain yak-a-mein as a crossbreed of Asian and African American culinary traditions — a meaty noodle soup made from leftover beef, chicken, or shrimp with cooked eggs, green onions, and noodles stewed in a spicy, salty broth — and heard how her Grandma Georgie’s cooking and the neighborhood’s ‘salt, pepper, and love’ shaped the dish. After Hurricane Katrina closed the school where she worked, she began selling on second-line routes and at festivals and quickly became a fixture people would call out for: “Y’all seen that yak-a-mein lady?” She feels a responsibility to keep the recipe alive as her legacy, continuing to sell it for her daughters, grandchildren, and community following her son’s encouragement to “don’t stop, Ma.”" - Clair Lorell

Google
Authentic New Orleans Comfort with Real Flavor and Heart I stopped by Yakamein House while running errands, and I’m so glad I did. From the moment you walk in, the aroma tells you this place is serious about flavor. The menu proudly showcases authentic New Orleans cuisine, and you can feel the heritage behind every dish. I ordered the shrimp yakamein, and it was pure comfort in a bowl—rich, savory broth layered with depth, perfectly cooked noodles, tender shrimp, boiled egg, and fresh green onions sprinkled on top. The balance of spice and seasoning was spot-on, that Creole warmth that makes you pause between bites just to appreciate it. The staff was friendly and patient as I took in the options, the interior was spotless, and the overall vibe was laid-back but full of soul. You can tell they take pride in keeping the place clean, organized, and true to its roots. If you’re craving something that feels homemade but restaurant-ready, this is the spot. Whether you’re from New Orleans or just passing through, Yakamein House deserves a visit. I’ll definitely be back to try the oxtail yakamein next time—because this place? It’s the kind of comfort food that stays with you long after you leave.

Google
A friend recommended me to try Yaka Mein in NOLA. Did not find any next to the French Quarter, so I walked all the way to the Yaka Mein House. It’s not a proper restaurant, more like a fast food place. But this did not stop me from ordering one of the multiple Yaka mein options. Expectedly, the meal was ready very quickly. And it was tasty! A really rich brought and good selection of spices made this (fast) Yaka mein a real positive surprise. The ambience is not very appealing, but if you just focus on the meal, it’s actually worth it!

Google
We ordered several dishes. The sandwich, the salad and the noddles. The salad has fresh ingredients and a tender beef on top. The noodles were hot and steamy with a seasoned broth. The sandwich had soft bread and tender meat. Overall, the sandwich was a definite 10 out if 10 because of the flavor, fresh ingredients and soft bread; the salad was an 8 out of 10 because of all the fresh ingredients; and the noodles were a 7 out of 10 because the broth was hot and seasoned. All the items were good but the sandwich stood out and I was hard for me to stop eating it.

Google
Hmm out of bread, chicken and sweet potato pies. Orderd the beef yakamein wanted beef & chicken but….no chicken . Shrimp and fish po boys adhere good a lil over seasoned but edible . The yak was edible nothing special . The fries stole the show . Definitely disappointed . Minus the 45 minute wait + the hour drive 🗑️. Bathrooms well stocked . Oh the po boys came out with bread ..

Arica R.

Google
Great atmosphere. The cashier was kind and patient. Food didn’t take long. The beef yakamein flavors came together well. Beef was tender. The house made chips were light and krispy. Great experience.

Google
Came on a Thursday for their oxtail yakamein, and it was soooooo salty!!! The oxtail itself was tender, and the meat fell off the bone…but I just couldn’t get passed how salty everything was! I’m not sure if it was just me, but I guess to each his own. I also barely had any noodles and kinda wish it wasn’t served in such a small to go container. With a price tag of $26, the portion needs to be better and bigger. My friend ordered a fried shrimp poboy and can you please tell me how many pieces of shrimp you see in there???? You can get a more fulfilling poboy elsewhere at a more reasonable price. The only thing I liked was the sweet potato pie. It was not too sweet and had lots of filling. The outside was the perfect crisp. If I ever return, I would order that again and maybe try something else…. It really is a hole in the wall with limited seating so if you plan to eat here, be mindful about not having that much room to eat and maybe consider taking your items to go.

Google
Very fast service. The yakamein has a lot of flavor. The broth is what sets it off. Must try!!

Staci J.

Google
The yakamein noodle broth was amazing. Definitely a place to try if you in New Orleans.

Yelp
I have had the oxtail yakamein in Houston at 1929 Poboys Cafe. I thought it was the best yakamein that could be made, but came to New Orleans with a beautiful friend of mine, she knows who she is, and I want to thank her for bringing me to the yakamein house in New Orleans, because this was some of the best food I've ever had.
google avatar

Shabray S.

Yelp
Ordered shrimp to go! Was able to eat and enjoy my food. Was filled to top of to-go bowl with broth and overload on top and bottom with shrimp. When I think of yakamein I expect spaghetti noodles but this bowl was survived with fettuccine noodles which is the reason for the 3/5 review. I just think the noodles took away from the dish. Service was quick and once I received my food it was hot. Very quick to order and turn around was fast. The building was well organized. Facility was clean. If I have the option to change my noodles I'd try this place again!

Robert M.

Yelp
Typical place that's not consistent with hours of business. Food is decent but not worth the hassle of guessing the days they are going to be open and not.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
The food is excellent. They will give you a sample to try. The oxtails is amazing. They have everything from tacos to yakamein Philly steaks with yakamein juice on it. The service is excellent. The ambience is great. I give this establishment a 10/10 and it is a must try. I think they've only been open under 2 years, very nice people. We visited when we were here from out of town

Yelp
Man man man! This Beef Yakamein was the best I've ever had. I originally wasn't a big yakamien fan but this place made that change. The broth was so flavorful perfectly seasoned and had the right amount of spice! I can only imagine this on a super cold day it will be the perfect meal. The beef was real tender but it still had a nice bite to it, it wasn't falling apart I really enjoyed that. The noodles had the perfect the chew was amazing they were cooked really well. The only down fall is they ran out of eggs I was shocked! The service was pretty good the young lady was really nice, and the food came out in 5 minutes that's always a plus! I was really amazed I will be back to explore the menu!

Yelp
Honestly, this was my favorite thing I ate while I was in New Orleans this weekend. When my husband and I arrived around noon on Saturday, it was pretty busy all of the tables in the small dining area were full, and there were about three other parties that were standing seemingly waiting on their food. My husband ordered the cheeseburger, Poboy, and I ordered the yakamein beef bowl. The cashier was really helpful. After ordering, we waited for what seemed like a while. I was going to give it 20 minutes before I inquired how much longer with the cashier. However, I got a text that my order was ready after 15 minutes. I will say I did feel bad because we received our order before the three other parties that were standing waiting when we walked in... however I have no idea what they were waiting for and what they ordered. We took our food elsewhere to go eat and love the flavors! The poboy was so big. However, we did ask for a combo and did not receive the combo. I would try this place again, but I would definitely order an advance and go for pick up.
google avatar

Charlé W.

Yelp
Excellent food, friendly service. The dining area and bathroom were very clean. Even though the space is fairly small, they can fit a lot of us in there. We dined in and enjoyed the atmosphere so much that we stayed for over an hour. My chicken pho was well seasoned and hardy. The egg was perfectly cooked with a soft yolk cooked at the perfect temperature. I'd had Yakamein House for takeout and was even more impressed with the food in person. Before we left, we decided to try the praline poundcake. What a rewarding decision. We LOVED that dessert. I'm not even big on poundcake and I would order it again.
google avatar

Phyl S.

Yelp
Seamless online ordering and pick up. The food was ready at the estimated time. The ramen was so flavorful and filling. One improvement would be to suggest additional sauce or sides on pick up because I don't think I notice the option online.
google avatar

Lakeisha W.

Yelp
This Yakamein is sooooo good to me. I went back to back in June and July...... I even brought a whole group of friends in July 30 to try it. We all in the food. It was great serving that we all were full and most of us couldn't finish it.
google avatar

Whitney A.

Yelp
I tried this place after constantly seeing it on social media and this is one of the places the internet didn't lie about. The food was good! Well seasoned and full of flavor! YES BROTH!! Not a bunch of seating inside but they do have a few tables. Counter staff were knowledgeable and friendly.
google avatar

Tia C.

Yelp
The yakamein tacos are just so good! Good service every time! Black and woman owned is always a plus. Love it here!

Yelp
Let me start by saying I absolutely do not like yakamein!! But this!! I just won't turn down trying something new..so I heard about this place and decided, let's go here for lunch! They did NOT disappoint! I ordered the shrimp yakamein..now it's a little pricey if you ask me..ijs but don't let that stop you..it was $18.99 came out to like $22 for that..it's came out quick and hot..they have somewhere you can sit inside and eat, also a drink machine is in there..music was playing and the cashier Morgan was super friendly..my type of place! The yakamein was so darn good! It has a lil spice to it, but nothing a true New Orleans person can't handle..it had so many shrimp & 1 whole egg cut in half!
google avatar

Cas T.

Yelp
Located on the corner next to The Parish. It's small inside: counter space and a few seats. My order took a while, but I don't like rushed food, unless it's fast food. The yaka was GOOD! I'll definitely visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Yakami Yakameat Yakamein Call it what you want, but this chicken yakamein at was so good. I was in the area and said why not since Tam Loves to Eat raved about it. This unique creole soup can be found all over the city and is an example of the blending of cultures in New Orleans. Rooted in a time when Creoles and Chinese worked side by side, this dish comes in many variations. Enjoy!

Yelp
I saw a few social media videos advertising Yakamein House, so I had to add it to my dining itinerary for my NOLA visit. There were a ton of options on the menu, and I finally chose the shrimp, beef, and chicken bowl. You get a lot of food per portion size, definitely enough to share or save for another meal. All the flavors worked so well together. There were tons of meat included in the dish and I appreciate that my boiled egg was cooked hard with no runny yolk. I enjoyed my bowl so much, I visited Yakamein House a second time before I left the city. This would definitely be my go to restaurant if I lived in NOLA.
google avatar

Lafranka W.

Yelp
The portion of Yakamein beef and shrimp soup, priced at $20 per bowl, offers good value. However, I found it to be quite salty, which may not be to everyone's taste.
google avatar

Jolene G.

Yelp
Yeah, so I'm full. Flavor oxtail abundance wait time I went here for lunch and it won't be the last time!!!

Yelp
First time to this fairly new yakamein and po-boy restaurant. I read good things about yakamein and I have been looking for place to regularly get some old sober. I believe this may be the answer. I ordered the beef and chicken and the flavor profile was very nice, i could tell the soup had simmered for a while to gain flavor. The umami flavors were my favorite part and when I bit into the chicken there was a hint of sweet. I say we have found another queen of yakamein in town. We have room for 2 great women with 2 great recipes. They let me sample the sweet potato pie and it was very good and i would recommend that if you want a sweet treat afterwards. They also brought me a sample of the shrimp. It was seasoned well, but the shrimp was bit over. With less cook on the shrimp it would be nice. In really enjoyed the owners and talking with them the staff are friendly and helpful. The serving size was more than you get at Jazzfest so I can see why they charge more than some may like. It will easily be 2 meals for me. And it would great to share 2 different soups or a po-boy. They also have different salads regular and the special Yaka-mein po-boy. A person who ordered this said it was very good. I look forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. The depth of flavor and spice in the broth has to be tried to be believed. The noodles were perfect and the beef, melt in your mouth tender

Frank I.

Yelp
The yakimein poboy was very good. The cashier was very hospitable and knowledgeable about the entire menu as well as the preparation of each dish. It's a nice cozy spot on Tulane off of Broad and I will be coming back to try something different. I think I'll get the yakimein with the poboy so I can dip that joint like a birria.. I highly recommend you try them out.
google avatar

Kristen R.

Yelp
Food came out quick when I ordered for my first time here & everything was still piping hot when I made it home. The broth had that perfect New Orleans flavor & I can't wait to go back for that pie, DELICIOUS!!
google avatar

D'Anna S.

Yelp
Yakamein was flavorful and very filling! There was a slightly sweet and slightly spicy flavor to the broth and the meat and noodles were good and fresh!!

Quinci L.

Yelp
The broth is too salty and tastes like a bouillon cube. The shrimp are deveined but too small for the price. They use fettuccine noodles. The restaurant is more tailored for to go orders. I'm disappointed in the quality and pricing of the food. I was charged for extra green onion, AND $5 for noodles. They gave me a full bowl of fettuccine, I could make Alfredo with this portion. The ambiance in the restaurant is bland like the food. There are local home cooks who make better broth with the correct recipe. It's located on Tulane so I guess it has to afford rent pricing. But for a first time experience I won't be coming back nor ordering from this restaurant. It's a shame to exploit a historical dish created from black and yellow solidarity in the 80s for a quick buck. I know it's a harsh review but I mean, why change the noodles?? Salt doesn't equal flavor. I give it 2 stars for the portion size being equal to the price because 2-3 people can eat this (and make this at home with better ingredients for a cheaper price.)
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
Decided to try Yakamein House today after seeing Carla Pesono post about it over the weekend. That beef broth did something to my soul. I do not know what all is included in the broth, but it is phenomenal. Will be back as a regular customer.
google avatar

Asia H.

Yelp
I gave it 4 stars cause they rude in there! but the Yakamein was rolling smile and greet your customers especially when somebody tells you good afternoon though.
google avatar

Jerve' J.

Yelp
THE FOOD THE CUSTOMER SERVICE By far the best Yakamein I've ever had in my life, IDK if Candice used the wine that Jesus got up there in heaven to marinate the beef but BAYBAY! Listen to me. Just get it. Eveything is cooked to perfection, the protein is all fresh and did do not skimp at all... I feel like they sent a fisherman into the gulf to get the shrimp y'all, nothing frozen about them. My husband had the Yakamein Poyboy and it should come with a warning. Never have I had anything that delicious and filling in my life. Order 3-4 Fried Sweet Potato things to go! If you just 1 you're gonna be pissed so just get 3 and be proud of yourself. They were so nice and welcoming they make you want to come back for the food and the warm smiles. Oh and this has nothing to do with the food but the play list they had going was such an added touch and it was at the right volume!! I'm down to listen to 90s music all day over great food.
google avatar

Jacob C.

Yelp
1000% yes! This is what I've been searching for in NOLA! My wife and I visited for the first time and were warmly greeted by the owner even though it was less than 30 min before close. He even offered us samples. We shared the beef yakamein and the chicken Po-Boy. This was one of the best Po-Boys I've had. We will be returning.
google avatar

Ashley F.

Yelp
Went with co-workers for lunch. Had a decent crowd a few people ahead of us. More of a takeout spot as there is minimal seating. Interior needed some cleaning and cosmetic touch up. Service was pretty reasonable. I got the beef yakamein. Sooo good with a good amount of beef and good portion size. Would recommend if you're looking for good yakamein!!!
google avatar

Toka C.

Yelp
The beef yakamein was giving everything. It was flavorful, a little spicy with a lot of substance to the broth. You can ask them to hold the pepper flakes if you don't like spicy foods like myself. I most definitely would recommend this, because lord knows I'll be getting this frequently. Now the sweet potato pie was a different story. It had very little filling, and a lot of dough. Mostly all you tasted was the fried pie shell. I hope they recognize the flaw with the pie because if it's corrected this place would be a win. Update I was told that The Yakamein House changed their pies. I went there to see for myself because I love sweet potatoes and I love yakamein!!! Let me tell you the customer service at The Yakamein House is top tier. I told them the issue I had with my previous experience with the sweet potato pie. They advised me that they recognized the issue and acted immediately to resolve the problem. They said that they value their customers and wanted them to have an all around good experience with they come to their establishment. They realize customers have many places they can choose to spend their money. They emphasized how appreciative they are when customers choose them. Let me say the change to the sweet potato pie was for the best. The pie crust was light and flaky, the filling was plentiful, and sweet like your mom's homemade sweet potato pie with just the right amount of icing. On top of all this it was served hot!!!! I'll be back for sure!!!!!
google avatar

JADE M.

Yelp
Ok. Always start on a positive. My first time trying the beef/shimp Yakamein (firing essence fest) it was absolutely BUSSIN! Let me tell you! Meat was tender, good broth consistency and flavor, perfect noodles. Fast forward to my second time: not so impressed unfortunately. Maybe I caught them on an off day but the shrimp were rubbery and the broth didn't have the same flavor. Huge bummer but I'll send on a positive-still very much edible and I'll give them another go.

Brenda K.

Yelp
Visiting friends in New Orleans before heading back to Baton Rouge. Did a Google search for restaurants near me in the Mid-City area and this new place on South Broad popped up. It's called 'Yakamein House' and has been operating for about 7 months. It's right around the corner from the Orleans City Court where you would pay traffic tickets in person. If you're in that neighborhood you MUST stop by and get either a bowl of Yakamein or po-boy from this new place. Actually even if you're NOT nearby it's worth the drive up there to check them out if you haven't had a Yakamein fix in a while. FYI, They also make po-boys: Shrimp, Catfish & Manda patty hot sausage. I purchased the beef yakamein to eat in and was bowled away haven't had a genuine and delicious bowl since before Katrina. Well okay, I did manage to get a cup of Ms Linda's Yakamein when one of her employees/relatives participated in a pop-up event at SUNO 2 years ago, but this place makes an even richer broth than what I had at SUNO. The broth was rich, tasty and flavorful. It was LOADED with beef that was fork tender and absolutely delicious. I also tried an order of fries (cuz why not) which were wonderful - creamy on the inside and nice and crispy on the outside. Their sweet potato hand pie melted in my mouth (think Krispy Kreme donut light shell- but shaped like a Hubigs pie with sweet potato filling inside ) Portion sizes are generous in fact I couldn't even finish all my Yakamein after eating the fries and sweet potato hand pie. No worries, I do not mind warming up leftovers when they are this good So did I love my meal at 'Yakamein House'???? Well put it this way, I was heading back home to Baton Rouge and I wasn't going to settle with just my leftover beef Yakamein that I couldn't finish, so I got me ANOTHER bowl of chicken Yakamein for tomorrow. How's THAT for a rave review eh?!?!

Gahavonni C L.

Yelp
Food was fresh. Service was great and the ambiance is nice! I will be returning in the near future.
google avatar

Christie D.

Yelp
The food tastes awesome, I enjoyed the beef yakamein.-Thank you Dulaine for suggesting the Yakamein House, I will be going back for sure!!!!!
google avatar

Alicia D.

Yelp
I did enjoy the yakamein. It's not sweet which I love! The beef is tender. My only con is I feel like it's a bit on the saltier side; I kept reaching for my drink as I was eating it. Also the noodles are a bit overdone for my liking but that's just preference. I would go back, but I'd dilute the broth a bit.
google avatar

Jane G.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this 5 stars. The beef and shrimp yakamein was delicious. The service was quick. But, I did not know I was helping to pay for a business expense! I was charged an 8% Service Fee. I couldn't fathom why. I got my food at the counter. It was not delivered to my table. I was told it was to pay for the transaction fee. I had no idea I would be contributing to pay for an overhead cost. It's not posted anywhere. Not on the menu, counter, door, wall...nowhere! So here's my PSA for you. You have to help pay for a business expense.

Mel504 W.

Yelp
Me and I fiancée went there today. The young lady and the gentleman was on there cell phone while ordering. They only had beef and shrimp yakamein, the food was cool. The Fountain. Drink was down They are not serving anything on there menu anymore.

Yelp
The oxtails melts in your mouth. The Beef Po boy was amazingly good. The fried sweet potatoe pie was delicious. 10/10 for me

Yelp
A new addition to the Tulane corridor is Yakamein House. Hard to believe that I'm from New Orleans and had never tried yakamein. I knew that it's a broth-based soup similar to pho and ramen...both of which, I love. I live off of Tulane Ave., so I'm always excited to see a new business open up. The good: The staff is as friendly as all get out. Very welcoming and kind. I enjoyed talking with the gentleman working the counter as he assured me that I was going to LOVE yakamein! The ok: The restaurant itself is pretty small. While there are tables if you choose to dine in, this place is probably better suited just to stop in and pick up a to go order. The yakamein itself was tasty, but to warn...it's insanely salty. I'm used to how salty pho and ramen are, so I was prepared for the salt. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I love pho and ramen so much. But...I was unable to eat this yakamein without adding water to it. Once I did that, it was very good. The bad: No other way to put it...the price. It's very expensive. The chicken and shrimp yakamein was $20. So, with tax and tip, you're looking at $23. I get that prices are high everywhere. Ramen houses are charging $15-$18 for ramen and Vietnamese places are charging $13-$16 for pho...but that's in a full-service restaurant with wait staff...not a small counter service place that is best suited for take-out. With it not being a full-service restaurant with wait staff, their prices should reflect that. If they were more appropriately priced at $13-14, they could have an all-day revolving door of business. At $20, I fear that they won't make it, and that makes me sad because it was tasty and the people that work there are great.
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
It was great. Very good taste. Excellent! Food was good. I ordered shrimp yakemein and beef.

Gladys G.

Yelp
I was excited to try because I heard so many good things about this place on TikTok. I tried the yakimein with beef however it was way too salty. I don't recommend.
google avatar

Sandy W.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Yakamein I've ever tasted hands down! A little pricey in my opinion but they are about to get a ton of my money for sure! Customer service is really good as well. I wish them success and longevity!
google avatar

Phillip S.

Yelp
Food was SOOOO good! It's a small place with a few seats so come early if you want to eat in. The manager/owner lets us try before we buy which is a good thing. I had the shrimp and chicken Yakamein and it was slammin! Wife got the Oxtail Yakamein (only available on Thursdays) and it was good too. If you are in the hunt for this dish, come here and don't go no where else!

Gladys G.

Yelp
The food was extremely salty and service .The customer service was good. If it was less salt it would have been better.
google avatar

Ladell V.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Sometimes a bit salty. I went there one time they only had chicken and shrimp no beef.

Yelp
I've been a few times but the last time I didn't like it. The portions are getting smaller, the flavor is changing, the atmosphere is stale. They need to get it right, quick.

Yelp
The yakamein was very flavorful! I ordered mine to go. The portion was good and worth the price. The ambience and service was ok. The parking is horrible because of its location, I had to circle around a couple of times just to find a parking spot. Overall the food was very good which is why I highly recommend trying

Yelp
I heard about this place online. I put it on my list as a place to try out on my next visit home. I went there today around noon. When I arrived there were three people behind the counter and only one table with customers. There are two registers on their front line. The guy at the register to the left was on the phone. I walked over to the register to the right. I just stood there. NONE OF THE THREE EMPLOYEES ACKNOWLEDGED ME? What did I do? Turned right around and left. What is wrong with people working in the service industry with absolutely no customer service skills? I'm not kissing anyone's ass to support YOUR BUSINESS.

Yelp
This place has amazing food. The New Orleans Cusine was so flavorful and mouth-watering. I need some just thinking about it!

Yelp
The food is priced too high and to salty. The owner is rude and the place needs to be stocked to take care of the customers needs.
