Where To Eat In Gramercy - New York - The Infatuation

"Yama is Gramercy’s slightly more traditional, though still casual and reasonably priced sushi spot. The sushi is quality enough that you can get away with ordering simple sashimi or nigiri, and the space is nice enough to be suitable for an easy date night. The sushi bar is also a good spot to dine solo," - hillary reinsberg

Google
A cute little place with nice workers. The food is good, but maybe presentation could be a tad nicer. Rolls seemed to fall apart for us. Had to wait a bit after the pickup time for food to be ready but that’s no big deal. We liked it. I like that their vegetable roll includes carrots because some other places do not. Avocado roll is very good too. I think prices are very fair and on par with other sushi places in the area.

Google
BEST SUSHI I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!! I’ve tried many places around jersey but nothing compares to Yama ll Sushi. Food is super fresh!! I usually have my favorites (Salmon skin & Alaska) but even though when I try something different they always surprise me. Love the miso soup and seaweed salad, haven’t found better than the one they offer. Also the staff is very friendly and attentive. Great service over all!!

Google
Ordered a bento box and veggie roll because I am highly allergic to seafood. They gave me a crab roll instead and didn’t compensate me in anyway, had to throw the whole thing away. They tried to credit me for a vegetable roll ($1) for future use. Yeah, terrible service and damage control.

Google
I was very impressed with the resturant. It's a hidden gem in Lodi N.J. Great lunch menu, parking, and service! Lunch Bento box Salmon teriyaki, seaweed salad, miso soup. Exquisite, lots of flavor. I give them a 10. A must visit if you are in Lodi New Jersey.

Google
The restaurant is not fancy but cozy. The food is good. I noticed that their sashimi was bigger than most sushi places. Should give it a try if you're in the area.

Google
This is my go to spot,The sushi is very good, everything is made on the spot, they have very good miso soup and both of their green teas hot and cold are the best. The staff is very friendly and courteous. The prices are very reasonable.

Google
Definitely, the only sushi I am willing to eat not out of criticism of others, but because of the kindness, generosity, and simplicity of everyone in this place. Besides making wonderful, fresh, and delicious dishes, they are lovely people, which makes the experience even more special

Google
I ordered here last night for a party of 6 and it was so amazing I only have miso soup left and I’m sad lol — the sushi is amazing!! - the miso is amazing!! It is high quality! — great prices! I’ll be ordering here every week. I love sushi so I’ll be going in often for those days where I don’t wanna cook. Thank you !! Atmosphere is very clean and homely. Would definitely come to sit and eat for couple hours. Looking for new items on the menu I haven’t tried yet!

Yelp
I've eaten food from Yama Sushi twice, but suffice to say that warrants me a chance to write this review. It's a cute little sushi spot tucked away in a corner near the Walgreen's in Lodi, but also nearby a mainstay in Lodi that could provide potential competition - Ya Food - Zheng's Garden. Not to conflate Japanese and Chinese food together, especially as an Asian-American of Japanese and Korean ancestry - however in the United States, many people who have a hankering craving for "Asian food" certainly may not argue a difference, and that may be key to most people. I've eaten their shrimp shumai and pork dumplings, and honestly they are par-for-the-course; not terrible by any means, but certainly average. Their miso soup is very good - offering nice chunks of tofu in with large pieces of kombu seaweed, as well as their shrimp tempura; but then again, it's VERY hard to screw up miso soup and frying some shrimp. I have yet to try any of their traditional nigiri sushi pieces; but I did notice a bit of lack of variety in their offerings of more traditional forms of sushi compared to the overly-sensationalized and Americanized sushi rolls such as a "Mexican roll", whatever that's trying to be. All in all, so far Yama Sushi has hit me as an average Americanized Japanese sushi spot. I'll definitely come back to try their actual sushi, and I'll revisit my review during that time.

Yelp
New to area and decided to try this place for some take out. Small cozy place tucked away in a strip mall. The people inside were friendly. I ordered the hibachi chicken dinner which came with: Miso soup, small salad, fried rice. and hibachi chicken w/vegetables and two shrimp. It was a very good deal for the amount of food I received. The Miso soup was delicious! The small salad was the perfect amount and the dressing that came with it was tasty, although I couldn't figure out what it was (not ginger dressing). The fried rice was fresh and tasty. The hibachi chicken was flavorful along with the fresh vegetables. My only issue was the shrimp was a bit overcooked and dry, but still tasted good. It was such a good dinner and I'm looking forward to finishing my leftovers tomorrow. Will go back to try their sushi next time.

Yelp
Yama used to be much better. While nothing was absolutely bad, everything was just uninspired and mediocre. The tempura calamari were the worst; they were so tough as to be inedible. The sushi was not the best quality fish and the handrolls were poorly constructed while suffering from the same tired, mediocre fish. It's too bad. They are nice people who have been overtaken by a tough economy or who have just given up. We won't be back.

Yelp
By far one of the best sushi places I've tried. We are now a regular customer. The fish is so fresh!!! Everything we have had is always good. We have never been dissatisfied. The owners are the sweetest people another reason why we enjoy coming here. We also love the tea. My favorite is the Mexican Roll. Definitely recommend. You get top quality ingredients and service for a very great price.

Yelp
Order Uber Eats from here for lunch. Food was packed well and still warm when delivered. For the most part the food was decent. I ordered a Chicken Teriyaki, a Beef Hibachi, and several sushi rolls. The sushi rolls were a tad small, but tasted good. The beef was a little too well done for me, though that's not the restaurant's fault since I forgot to request it to be cooked to medium. The chicken teriyaki had good flavor, but it was white meat and I typically prefer dark meat when it comes to chicken teriyaki.

Yelp
Ever since we started living in Lodi, this place has been our go to take out place every time. I love their shrimp and vegetable tempura box! They don't skimp out on their portions and their special sushi rolls are amazing compared to the many places I go to like Las vegas sushi in fort lee The owners are sweet and super nice even if there was a small mistake. I love this place and will continue to order from here
google avatar

Yelp
The tiger roll it's my favorite. I being ordering since last year and I can't complain.
google avatar

Yelp
A decent generic sushi place. I've ordered takeout from here a good number of times and the lunch special prices are pretty good. The steak hibachi was excellent once and just decent the other. Rolls and sushi are pretty generic, no toro or uni here. Portion is pretty good. Yaki udon had a sweet and acidic sauce that was quite good. Ownership is very friendly.

Yelp
It took 2 hours to get delivered. I called after 1 hr and 15 minutes to check on it since it was an online order and they said the driver just left. My hot food was cold and my sushi was lukewarm/room temperature. The sauce for the shumai was different than I've had before. It was thick and had a flavor to it that it couldn't place. I didn't care for it. I was starving so I ate right away. The sushi tasted fresh but it wasn't as enjoyable because it wasn't cold. If I ever ordered again I would go pick it up because 2 hours is not an acceptable time to wait for delivery, especially without a phone call or text. The food wasn't worth the wait.

Yelp
Bought recently plate of sushi. Paid more than 60$, but got so cheap sushi, at least the plate they sell doesn't worth it, only rolls and most of them are with cucumber and avocado, just few pieces with tuna, the plate definitely doesn't worth it
google avatar

Alex O.

Yelp
I don't really like their California rolls. Too much cucumber. Barely any crab. The crab is imitation crab. Also got their crabs roll. Literally just crab with rice. Nothing else. The only reason I give it 3 stars is because i love their chicken tempura rolls.
google avatar

Marta T.

Yelp
Fresh. Small rolls that are nice and simple. Not too much rice. Delivery within a hour.
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
Wait was rediculous came late and incomplete Called to complain and nothing Will not recommend

Pi W.

Yelp
Good service with good price nearby. They have fresh sushi, sashimi, and some special rolls. Tasty hibachi and teriyaki come with home made miso soup and salad. Appetizers such as gyoza, edamame, shrimp tempura are great too.
google avatar

Lena H.

Yelp
Review is based on takeouts. I've had their lunch specials which is a good deal but the rolls are very plain and not good to me. So today I ordered from their regular menu and got a specialty roll. They are much pricier but I thought I would get a big flavorful roll out of it. But no, it was the smallest special roll I have ever seen, and did not taste that great.
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
I was expecting a bit more after reading the reviews. Ordered the sashimi lunch which came with six pieces of fish and a California roll which I was mercifully allowed to switch to a spicy tuna roll. I still do not understand why some sushi restaurants feel the need to give you a roll when ordering sashimi. At least it came with both soup and salad (which appeared to be accompanied by homemade ginger dressing). The lunch portion came with 3 pieces of snapper and salmon, my least favorite options. I guess I should have asked but it would make sense to at least throw some tuna on there. Also ordered the live tree roll which was decent but needed more texture.
google avatar

Rich V.

Yelp
Went there on a Saturday for lunch and didn't feel like driving to my norm sushi spot so tried this place out. Ordered the lunch special 3 rolls that came with soup and a salad. Asked for a spicy California and was given a real basic California basically avocado and crab, not spicy as asked nor cucumber or anything. Next roll was a tuna and avocado. Which was basic and good. Other was a spicy tuna, it had tobiko crunch inside which I was not aware of so wasn't my fav. Salad was real basic lettuce with sesame dressing. Now the soup on the other hand was so damn good it's the only reason why I am giving it 3 stars and not 2, plus the location was good and people inside were nice. Prob will venture to another local spot next time I'm in the mood.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was empty except one table of employees eating. Got the Godzilla roll and salmon skin roll. Godzilla was a little heavy because it was covered in too much sauce -eel, wasabi, and spicy mayo...way too saucy for my taste. Salmon skin was ok. Also got the nyumen soup. It was tasty and helped wash down the rolls. Would've like to see a little bit more noodles in it though. When we were done we had to call for the check ourselves and also waited until I had to call the server to take the check (we weren't in a hurry or anything so it was a while). She only checked back with us once during our time there, even though were were the only ones there. Overall it was an ok experience but probably wouldn't come back.

Yelp
I don't remember the name of the rolls that I ate but they were all good. Service was fast. No complaints.
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorites but today had a pretty bad experience. Their miso soup is basic but good and their service is usually with a smile. The one problem I have is that some of the specialty rolls are very skimpy and small. They need to make these rolls bigger. My sushi was packed in the same bag as my hot soup, so by the time I got home sushi was warm (gag)
google avatar

Mel K.

Yelp
The sushi here is delicious! Everything Time I've gone here the service is quick and usually my food is served within 10 minutes or less. The family who owns this place is very friendly as well. The reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because they are a little pricey. The regular sushi rolls are average for new jersey but everything else on the menu I'd a couple dollars more than other places. But it's worth it since the food is so good here! I personally reccomend the sushi and the beef negimaki! Can't go wrong with those 2 dishes!

Yelp
Horrible owner he is a thief stay away.. I ordered from an online site food for delivery after1 hour i called to find out where it is they said he is out for delivery when he did not show up i called to cancelled he refused to refund

Jaimie M.

Yelp
Terrible. I did not like this at all. We ordered haru maki, hibachi steak and a spicy tuna roll. The haru maki was terrible. The hibachi steak was the only thing that was ok. I won't be ordering from here again.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Very disappointed, small portions I also ordered a philly roll and the cream cheese tasted like freezer burn the salmon was cloudy absolutely disgusting a waste of $30. When I went in to pick up my order they were completely unfriendly stopping me at the door demanding my name. I won't be returning ever again , also it looks dirty and dust everywhere in a small cramped 'room' . Don't go here
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for lunch today and they have a great variety of things to try. I got a chicken teriyaki bento box which came with a california roll, salad, miso soup, and white rice. It was great and fast! Would def recommend. One of the best places for sushi in the area.

M N.

Yelp
This place used to be good. It's not like it is to be. I ordered online and they messed up my order. I picked it up 30 minutes after and they hadn't even started on the order. Very disappointed .

Yelp
I ordered sushi from them once they brought me the wrong thing I called them and told them they brought me the wrong thing and they came back to get it... now the only way I realized it was the wrong order was that I took a bite of the sushi.... it had eel in it and I absolutely am disgusted by eel ... so needless to say the delivery guy comes back to get the sushi I didn't want ..I don't know why maybe to see if I was lying that I didnt eat it?? regardless when he saw that a peice was missing he said he couldn't take it back and I explained to him that I had already spoken to the owners on the phone about it and that I had received the wrong roll and I knew this by trying a piece... He proceeded to call the owners and talk to them in Japanese or Chinese... he got off the phone looked at me and said "fine I take back your roll here's your other roll don't call us again for food." REALLY DON'T CALL US AGAIN FOR FOOD? UM I'M SORRY YOU WERE THE ONE THAT MESSED UP MY ORDER!!!! wrong !! DON'T WORRY BUDDY I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM YOU AGAIN... to add insult to injury, I called my credit card to see if they had taken off the sushi roll because the owner said that they would.. and I learned that not only do they not take it off but they also charged me for the other roll that they sent me to replace the wrong roll!! so all in all it was a horrible experience they have no manners they're rude they're totally unacomadating , and they totally ripped me off.. oh and the sushi wasn't even fresh.... Zero Zero Zero Zero Zero Zero stars!!!!!!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
The quality has been dropping significantly. I previously had a high opinion of this place, but the last few times we ordered delivery, the sushi was a bit ... fishy is the only word that seems appropriate. The rolls have gotten sloppier and a touch smaller as well. I'm not sure what happened, but I probably won't be going back for the foreseeable future.

Yelp
For the past week or so Ive had this craving for sashimi since its been a while that I havent had it. Finally decided to check out this place since it was walking distance from my home, to settle the reviews. Decided to get a tempura appetizer with a main dish of assorted sashimi. Wow wow and wow! Lucky enough to have the sushi bar and restaurant to myself all nice and quiet with gentle Japanese music playing in the background. For a first visit, Yama Sushi hit the nail on the head for me. Sushi chef and staff were constantly checking up on me to see how things were while i was dismantling my meal with the chopsticks, mmmm mmmm! Dont forget to put the wasabi in the soy sauce :), well thats just me perhaps. If youre looking for a place to enjoy some quality sushi and sashimi that wont break the bank, this is the spot. Im pleased because its close to home so I dont need to drive my car to get to it. Definitely gonna try it again sometime.

Yelp
The only time my boyfriend and I will eat here is for the lunch special offered Monday through Saturday. He likes to get the 3 rolls for $11 while I usually opt for the bento for around $8. I believe they're recently made some changes as they are giving more pieces of sushi with each order, which makes the special even more of a deal. I've tried the tonkatsu, but found it to be soggy and very dry. Udon noodles in the soup were quite mushy. Haven't tried much else as I think the prices are quite high. If you're in need of decent cheap sushi, go for the lunch special, otherwise look elsewhere.

Yelp
VALENTINES DAY DISASTER! My boyfriend and I could not find a sitter for our two boys so we figured we would order sushi and eat in! FAIL- they took an hour and a half and they closed 35 minutes ago!
google avatar

Deanna S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite local sushi joints. They have cheap lunch specials ($9.50 for 2 rolls, a salad and miso soup) and the food is very fresh and tasty. I come here often!
google avatar

Nathan G.

Yelp
Great spot!! The staff was very friendly and courteous. The food was delicious! I had Hawaiian roll, very tasty! Negimaki was awesome too. I recommend!

Kristin S.

Yelp
A coworker of mine actually mentioned this place to me which only made me feel a bit ashamed considered I live a few blocks away and never knew it was there, though now that I do, I will be going back many times. The food was delicious, I got the spider roll and my bf got a sushi deluxe (I think), along with miso soup, and a few pieces of salmon sushi, it was so good, everything was fresh and soft, the sauce on the spider roll is to die for. The staff is friendly and the whole place has a nice comfy feel. The prices are on the average to higher side, but still worth it.
google avatar

Gal S.

Yelp
Best sushi in New Jersey!!! Have to come and check this place out. Best sushi and amazing service! Highly recomended!!
google avatar

Christi D.

Yelp
With the recent closing (temporarily I hope) of Akasaka my fiance and I decided to try another place near by. I always see this place when I'm driving by so I figured we should try it. We got the Alaska, Chicken tempura, Sunflower and the Crazy roll(s). They were all really good... the crazy roll is my favorite. I minus one star for the presentation... they had put a lot of sauce on our rolls and it got kind of messy because the tempura rolls were warm and "melted" the sauce everywhere. I guess I am just used to sushi being neat and presented nicely. In the end it doesn't matter but if someone isn't a big sauce-on-sushi fan they might not have been happy about this. I however love all the weird sauces they include with my sushi --- when its done neatly of course :) I will definitely give this place another try and make sure you try the Crazy Roll!!

Patricia O.

Yelp
Bad sushi, the rolls are small and made me sick. J Maru Sushi in Heights is worth your money than this place
google avatar

Genesis D.

Yelp
Just ordered from here for the first time! its nice really and fresh. I ordered 3 rolls of salmon and tuna, very good! They were generous with the portions and you get really good miso soup on the side.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
So I had to update my previous review. Came here a few nights ago and I'm happy to say that the staff were much friendlier! I really enjoyed their N B Roll!

Jeff P.

Yelp
Nice little place, employees very nice, tried the Phoenix roll very good. Also try the pink lady roll it has an exquisite taste to it.

Georgina H.

Yelp
I ordered 3 rolls, 2 different soups, 2 salads, and an appetizer. The 3 rolls, Philly, Spicy Tuna and a Special Phoenix roll as well as the 2 salads, crab salad and spicy kani salad, were a bit on the smaller side. The appetizer was also a small portion, just enough for 2 people. The soups were the only item that I felt was what I expected. Overall, the price is the average price of sushi around the area, but the portions are just slightly smaller, enough that if you order more than 2 rolls (and you constantly order sushi from different places like me), you would notice the different size. I wouldn't have mind the smaller portion of sushi, but the quality wasn't even that good. (My favorite was the Kani Salad, better quality then other places, but still a bit of a smaller portion, but price was ok for the portion). Just to give you an idea of what I mean by portion, (spent about $55-tip included) I was sharing this with my sister, and we were able to finish it all. I recently spent about the same amount at another sushi place, ordered several rolls, shared that with both my sister and my mom, and had enough leftovers to take for lunch the next day.

Lexie A.

Yelp
I just ordered there this afternoon and both me and my boyfriend have food poisoning! Worst experience of my life!

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Great food , sushi and great customer service. The lady who greets you at the entrance is very sweet! She is very attentive and will accommodate to your dining experience. This is the perfect sushi spot & so close to home.

Jean C.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much at first but WOW. Cool hole in the wall vibe to it with absolutely amazing sushi. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone. The waitress is absolutely amazing and makes you feel right at home.

Yelp
Recently found out about this place since they had one of their delivery men drop off a menu at each apartment in my building. Decided to give them a shot last night and I was not impressed. Ordered the Yama Roll and the Summer Roll. The Yama Roll has yellowtail, tuna and salmon; a type of roll I'm all too familiar with as these are my favorite choices of fish when it comes to sushi. However, upon taking my first bite I could not ignore how fishy it tasted! I was immediately put off since the beautiful thing about these three choices of fish is how un-fishy they taste. I ended up determining that the yellowtail must have been bad or was on the border of turning bad and this was the culprit of the bad taste. I ended up picking off the salmon and tuna from the top of the roll (which tasted fine) and leaving the rest. The "Summer Roll" (which is snow crab spicy tuna, avacado, with salmon and tuna) was okay but smothered in sauce which was completely overpowering. I couldn't even finish these rolls. In addition, I ordered 2 slices of salmon sashimi and 2 slices of tuna sashimi. The salmon was great but the tuna was chewy and lackluster. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from them again.
google avatar

Vitaliy K.

Yelp
Love this sushi place! Great customer service and great food every time! I'd strongly recommend sushi lovers to try it, and it is quite inexpensive, especially for lunch special!
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
The best sushi in my town! My friends didn't believe me until I brought them since it's a really tiny place. Great prices and amazing specialty rolls! They even allow custom orders/extra tweaks to the specialty rolls! (I usually order spicy tuna avocado rolls) their lunch specials are filling & huge at a really great price. The owners are super friendly. Overall, my go-to sushi place!
google avatar

Helpful Piglet A.

Yelp
They have new owners. They've messed my order twice, but have been quick to correct it. Great tasty food. Affordable lunch specials. 3 rolls for $10.95. They do however charge extra for brown rice. 50 cents more per roll.
google avatar

Malena S.

Yelp
Finally a decent sushi restaurant! For those new to sushi, try the phoenix roll here you will be hooked for life The food is always prepared fresh and whether it's eat in, or take out, I am always pleased with the food and service.
