"There is always a line to get a table at this hidden gem of a stop in Lake Highlands, even though it’s extended the size of its space. As with most sushi spots, the move is to order whatever is on the chef’s special or picks list. It has a list of distinctly non-fussy rolls and classic sushi and sashimi. Bring a friend who doesn’t like raw fish along as well — it has yakitori, Roboto grill, noodle, and rice menus." - Courtney E. Smith, Rachel Pinn

We have to start off with the bad. The US Waygu buns were terrible. Absolutely no flavor or seasoning on the patty. Definitely regret ordering especially seeing how it was $6 a bun. Avoid this. The Agedashi Tofu was okay. I have had better, the flavor was just not hitting. The sushi wasn’t amazing but it was still definitely good. Worth going. I enjoy my spicy scallops. My gf fav rolls were the mackerel and the eel roll. But the absolute best thing we order were the skewers. They were super flavorful and delicious!!! You have to order them. I would also like to add that they have a big menu with different varieties such as ramen, curry dishes, bento boxes and more! Will have to come back to try the other items. Overall it was good but besides the bad things mentioned above another thing is that I felt the prices did not match the amount of food we received, for example the skewers. Price to food ratio was not proportionate. Maybe over charging a little. So really the true rating I would give is like a 3.7 starts out of 5.

Google
Great atmosphere. Staff was friendly. Food came out quickly and was delicious. Pretty good sakes. Would be great if the menu listed which type of sake each one was but the server was helpful.

Google
Really great “hole in the wall” sushi and Japanese restaurant. We ate here on a Saturday night before the place gets super packed. I’ve heard after 11PM or so, this place gets bumpin’. I loved their menu - the prices are great and you can get small, shared bites and try a bit of everything. We tried a couple of sushi rolls, the hamachi, a steamed pork belly bun, the pork belly dish, a couple of skewers. We also had a drink each. Our entire meal was around $100 (with tip), and we left full and happy! I would definitely be back!

Google
Very good food. Sushi is very high quality. All other items and soups were very tasty. It can get busy but tables turn quickly. I love how they are open very late.

Google
perfect date night dinner! service was excellent, suggestions were on point. cozy, intimate environment, just what we were looking for. we heard about this place by word of mouth, and wow what a great assist! we will definitely be back.

Google
Always good food - the grilled Squid takes a bit longer than the other food to come out but it's worth it. I like that I can order a small version of their Ramen, this is my first time getting their Ramen and it was good! Spicy chili tonkatsu Ramen was delightful. The cream soda is melon soda plus vanilla ice cream which is awesome. Love it 😀

Google
Every kind of person goes here. Look around when you go on a busy evening, or night since they're open til 2, and see the vast array of people there. Maybe they all live close by and just wanna grab a bite to eat. I don't think so though. I think the small dining area, intimate atmosphere, crazy decor, and maybe slightly stuffy air invite all people who love sushi and slamming soju shots to come do so at 12 in the morning. Wonderful.

Google
The happy-hour nigiri prices seem great until you realize how little you get. Then things get even worse after taking a bite because the taste didn’t even measure up to supermarket sushi. In particular, the inari sushi was an abomination, unlike anything I’ve seen elsewhere, and not in a good way. On the other hand, the regular menu items are flavorful, well-portioned, and reasonably priced for the quality.

Yelp
Food and atmosphere are great. Staff: on and off. I've been coming to Yama Sushi since 2021, ended up not coming for some years until recent. I went two weeks ago with a friend late night after work and did was bomb. We ordered a Seafood Creamy Udon, Wagyu pepper rice, and crunch crawfish roll. It was superb and service was great. I went last night with my friend but this time our whole family (total 6 of us) She has an autistic daughter age of 3 who cannot eat just any kind of food so her go to outing food is just fries. I double checked the menu to see if there were fries but did not come across that (could've been I mislooked or did not look hard enough) First thing the waiter asked was for the fries to be removed due to no outside food or drinks allowed.. even explaining to him the special circumstances but there was no wiggle room in bending the rules for a 3 year old of special needs over fries... Secondly we ordered the same exact meal but this time it was just not it. The seafood udon was lacking salt and the pepper rice was not as tasty as the first and the waiters vibes were just negative. I just hope management can relay the message to there staff in regards to being lenient in certain situations.

Yelp
First time eating here with some friends. It was an okay experience overall! There's a ton of indoor seating; they have 2 large rooms (one with a sushi bar seating and regular tables, and the other with large tables and games). We ordered the Buta-kimchi and creamy seafood udon. The buta-kimchi had a very strong oniony taste; it wasn't as filling as we had hoped. The creamt seafood udon was very rich (a little too heavy with sauce for my taste). It also didn't have as much seafood as I had hoped, but it was nonetheless a filling entree. The spicy endamame had a lot of flavor and spice! The Sunagimo kara-age was nice and cripsy, and it was accompanied with a tasty sauce. Our group also ordered a variet of rolls ans nigiri. The workers were very nice and friendly. About half of our group ordered sushi, and the other half ordered other dishes that required more cooking time. This discrepancy led to half of the group waiting for their food, and the other half eating. One of my friends had to wait extra long for her dish to come out, but it came out shortly after we had asked. The parking is very easy and plentiful, and the restaurant is located in a quiet shopping complex. Will need to try their sushi next time!

Stormy V.

Yelp
Food is quite bland. I'm in shock that we paid $9 for Shishito peppers and only received four! I low key feel like I've been robbed! Not to mention they were unseasoned, not even a dash of salt. We ended up eating what we already had at the house. Everyone was disappointed. This was a fail. It sucks bec I love the deal on Uber Eats, but really just not worth it.

Liz O.

Yelp
My fiancé and I checked out this restaurant for the first time on a Thursday night. The restaurant was pretty busy. We didn't get a warm greeting from the hostess. She seemed very busy and rushed. After waiting a couple of minutes, she finally sat us down and basically threw us the menus. We didn't have a proper waiter. The hostess took our order, and rapidly took the menus from us. Since not having a designated waiter, we were constantly asking the "bus lady" for items, such as lemons and straws for our water. The food we was ok. The ambiance is busy and casual. I definitely won't be coming back.

Kendy L.

Yelp
Awesome place for anime lovers! Love the amount of posters of my favorite shows on the walls. Looking at the menu, they have a wide range of items and lots of specialties I've never seen before in a a Japanese restaurant. Our server was very friendly and was very helpful. We decided to try the pork belly as our appetizer. It tasted okay. There was too much fat in it. My friend ordered the katsu curry and she told me she absolutely loved it. I chose the tonkotsu pork ramen. My order took a while to come out. About 15 minutes after my friend got her order. I enjoyed the broth and the pork was delicious. No complaints about it. I would definitely check out the place again and try their other dishes and drinks! Love the vibe of the place!!

Brittany L.

Yelp
Locally owned gem nestled in a shopping complex. It may seem unassuming, but this restaurant had a nice assortment of Japanese and Korean foods and drinks. We started out with the yakitori skewers. They were perfectly juicy and charred. Friendly wait staff. I'm a big fan of restaurants that give you a happy hour type discount, and that's exactly what Yama did for select nigiri. Good size portion ratio of rice to fish. Not pictured included my boozy mango Sochu cocktail. A fun worth-it sushi and yakitori restaurant in outskirts of Dallas.

Kelley H.

Yelp
Very authentic Japanese food. It's always a full house/no empty tables, so you know it's definitely good! The service is normally really quick (in and out 30-45mins). The food itself is really good and I definitely recommend you step outta your shell a little bit and try new things here because it definitely opened my eyes to new foods ! Overall great! The parking lot is kinda a nightmare because it's very small and there's tons of people who attend the billiard hall next door- so just note parking can be hard sometimes.

Helen H.

Yelp
Mmm this place is fine. I wouldn't say Anythign really stood out. Sushi is fine, menu is fine. But it did hit the spot for what we wanted

Jim D.

Yelp
Great value. Great selection of Japanese drinking food beyond the ordinary. Not strictly a sushi restaurant but Tuesdays and Thursdays have sushi deals

Andrew J.

Yelp
Went during happy hour Thursdays so everything you're seeing here was $1.50 each. Decent selection for happy hour, including all the normal expected sushi/sashimi as well as some unique spicy options. Taste consistency was a little off, as the fish tasted like it had been sitting out for a while on our first order, while in our second order, the fish tasted fatty and fresh. Overall everything tasted great, service was great, and it hit the sushi craving on the noggin.

Eduardo O.

Yelp
Great flavors rice is cooked well. Hole in. The wall but better than other restaurants that are at a higher price point. thank you.

Eric V.

Yelp
I went in with my wife and kids and felt very discriminated against and unwelcomed by the staff. I asked for a high chair and they never bothered to bring us anything. Didn't take our order. Nothing. We sat there for 20 minutes before we left. Meanwhile everyone around us was getting service.

Eli T.

Yelp
This place is a cozy whole in the wall type restaurant and it is very worth it. The sushi was very good and fresh. The spicy tofu soup was also great but on the very spicy side so be warned if you are sensitive to spice. The host and waiter were very kind and we felt welcomed. I will definitely go back to try more rolls!

Case W.

Yelp
This place keeps getting better and better each time I go back. Definitely don't sleep on Yama Sushi, it's

Chantal C.

Yelp
Perfect spot if you want that Izakaya (Japanese bar) experience out in the middle of Dallas - BIG statement considering I'm from Hawaii. Thankfully this place opens late and we were able to stop here after the Black Pink concert. If I lived here I'd totally be a regular. . Foodie fav - SMOKED SALMON sushi & HAMACHI KAMA, both perfectly melted in your mouth. Highly recommend both. . Tipsy fav - Sake bombs * ^__^ * . Order-- - Spicy edamame Hamachi Kama Smoked salmon nigiri Grilled squid Buta kimchee Champu Soju - peach & lychee Sake bombs . どうもありがとうございました to Tetsu -with the awesome service! You were so welcoming and my friend really enjoyed meeting you. . cheers! (:

Yelp
Yama Sushi was my jam back in my college days... back when it was Sushiyama. You would catch me here every week. I have not been back in maybe a decade. It still has the same small, hole in the wall charm but they've also expanded and doubled in space. One side is very small and quaint while the newer side is decked out in anime posters and decor. I love the ambience of both but it definitely feels like two different restaurants haha. I'm glad to see that $1 nigiri Tuesdays are still very much a thing. The quality of the sushi here is excellent and the fish is fresh. Expect to wait because they're as popular as ever but the wait will be worth it. It's hard to screw up nigiri as long as the fish is solid and your sushi rice is good. But their izakaya menu is great as well. We enjoyed the tenderness and softness of the buta kakuni (pork belly) and the crispness of the chicken karage. I usually like to indulge in their takoyaki too but I wanted to save room for their $1.50 salmon, spicy tuna, and eel nigiri!

David Y.

Yelp
would recommend them to anyone !Always excellent great service open late!!! Try you'll like it !!

Kim N.

Yelp
Would def come back for the double pleasure roll! Pretty intimate for smaller groups (wonder if the other room opens later at night)

Joi B.

Yelp
I wanted sushi at 1230am... lol. I checked Yelp to see what was open and good. Yama Sushi absolutely did not sis appoint. It's in a small strip mall. Iwas able to get a table easily at that time of morning. I watched the sushi chef prepare fish and also teach another guy that was with him. All I know is I left extremely happy. The Lychee Sake was really good. The lychee was quite prevalent. The I enjoyed the Teardrop roll but there was a little too much wasabi. I couldn't enjoy the heat of the jalapeño because the wasabi was too strong. I had to take some off of a few of the pieces. I wanted the legs of the crab on the spider roll but it was still really good. The right flavor and crunch. If you are a fan of truffle oil and also sushi the carpaccio is what you want. That odd flavor combination actually works. The fish was really buttery too. So this ice cream was definitely different. There was a fondant textured shell on the outside of the ice cream. I loved it. Wasn't sure about it at first but the vanilla was really good. Can't wait to go back

Rachel A.

Yelp
Most authentic staff I've seen in Dallas. Very much Japanese home vibes! The food was really good! I recommend trying this restaurant, but maybe carry out is easiest for ordering!

Branson B.

Yelp
The food is good as always, but the service was severely lacking this time and the waitress didn't seem to want to serve us speaking in a mono tone and rushing away from the table, forgetting things we asked for, but spoke with an enthusiastic voice to everyone around us. I used to frequent this establishment but I think i'll suck it up and drive to the plano location next time. Side note the other waiter in our section was extremely kind and welcoming and although he was not our tables server he was more helpful.

Jonathan F.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 16 climbers after a night time climbing sesh because it was one of the few places open late and that could accommodate all of us. One of my friends frequents this place a lot especially during happy hours which I'm sure I'll be back for sometime. The menu is quite extensive and a lot of things were ordered. I think the most popular thing ordered at the table was the curry katsu rice dish, which was what I got. I also got the whole grilled squid, kaarage, and wasabi fries as apps. The katsu curry rice was a great rec. I usually make my curry with chunks of carrots, onions, and potatoes, but theirs has these veggies cut up really fine and incorporated into the sauce. The katsu was breaded very nicely and the meat was tender. It comes with rice and some pickled garnish and all goes very well together. The kaarage was lightly breaded and very well done. I do wish they had a dipping sauce for it. The grilled squid was also flavorful, but some of the pieces were a bit over-charred. The wasabi fries were a bit underwhelming and not what I expected, pretty much just fries with a drizzle of wasabi mayo. I had a piece of takoyaki that had a good octopus to batter ratio so that was very nice. All in all, good food, good service (esp for a large group like ours), and will be back again to try other things.

Benjamin L.

Yelp
Food is (usually) good. Service at 11pm Friday night is non-existent. Long lines waiting for tables. Tables don't get cleaned then sit empty for 10-20 minutes. Once seated, no one comes to take orders. Really bizarre. Once someone came to take our order, the food was as good as ever. Bathrooms needed hand soap.

Josie W.

Yelp
Sushi is very fresh. Service is fast. I ordered through DoorDash and was very pleased with the appearance and presentation of my food.

Glen S.

Yelp
Our waiter was not as aware as I would've hoped and there were a few moments that our drinks as well could've been refilled but the food made up for it by a lot. The ambiance is very pleasant with anime posters and Asian newspapers available to read while you wait for a table.

Chow Y.

Yelp
Very cute restaurant. Very nice staff. Absolutely terrible yakitori--almost inedible. Sushi was well prepared--no problem there. Quality is also very lackluster. So sad to find a Japanese run restaurant this poorly stocked with fresh food and honestly, if you can't cook some chicken on a stick at an Izakaya and have that mildly delicious--you don't belong in business. I don't blame the staff, sushi chef (who was very nice) or anyone in the front management. The owner should be ashamed.

destini W.

Yelp
the food is so good, i love the ramen and the broth and egg *chefs kiss* the servers are so friendly and the vibe is amazing 10/10 would recommend

Michelle A.

Yelp
Had a horrible experience here tonight. We ordered a few nigiri's, yakitori, and sushi. The chutoro nigiri was mediocre/"fake" - it was not fatty at all and seemed like they just served a better quality cut of regular tuna. The salmon skin roll was rotten and we had to send it back. I took a bite and the smell of it was putrid. Literally made us lose our appetite to the point that we did not want to finish the rest of the food we ordered. The service was decent however, and the food was prepared and served fairly quickly.

Judah B.

Yelp
Hands down best sushi place in Dallas. Of course, they do well in other foods as well, but Tuesdays/Thursdays $1 sushi nights are always our guilty pleasures.

T T.

Yelp
Tuesday/Thursday $1 sushi deal. What else could you need?! Can't wait to keep going back!

Sam K.

Yelp
BEWARE OF RAW FISH HERE!!! We decided to try this place after enjoying the one in Plano but this one served us rancid salmon and tuna. I never return food to waiters but I could not eat this and I can't believe they served this to us. The sushi literally smelled like excrement a foot away from my nose and even looked like it had been room temp for hours. The waitress and staff gave us dirty looks for returning it but I know y'all aren't eating that raw fish yourselves! Sushi is NOT supposed to have a pungent, rotting smell. They were kind enough to refund us for the raw dishes and maybe we went on a bad night, but I will never give any Yama location my money. Go at your own risk, especially if eating sushi.

Samantha W.

Yelp
Sushi rolls were big and expertly made. Udon enough for two to share. Service attentive and patient. Cute hole-in-the-wall type place.

Hannah P.

Yelp
Definitely yes! AYCE never disappoints with their specialty rolls. Dynamite is bomb and the one with crispy onions shown here (i forgot the name) a must try!

Simon M.

Yelp
Great service and great food. I really enjoyed the Gyoza, Kakarage Chicken, and, of course, the sushi. They have expanded since the last time I was here in 2019, and the food is great.

Christy S.

Yelp
This is my favorite favorite spot! I love the late hours when im craving something delicious & intentional past 10 pm. I love their menu and the chef specials they offer. The chefs are always working hard and i can just tell they know what they are doing! it gives you an experience you typically wouldn't be able to find at just any Sushi shop because they offer a lot of special dishes like the IKura Salmon Donburi. The staff are always so helpful and sweet and me and my friends enjoy seeing their friendly faces! The environment is so inviting, the walls are filled with posters of some of my favorite shows, but aside from that it is pretty much your classic food stop environment. The food is delicious full of flavor and done VERY well considering the price point. Its way more affordable and it taste better than some places in dallas that offer a more upscale experience with Sushi and Ramen! Anybody that knows me has gone here with me at least once!

Doug L.

Yelp
If this place was in LA, I would probably go somewhere else, but for Dallas, it s not bad at all. It s not authentic Japanese, but close enough.

DW Z.

Yelp
Okay service but the food was absolutely terrible, I'm not super picky about sushi but this was worst than the kind you can buy at a grocery store. Super slimy fish (it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while), wrong kind of rice (there wasn't even any sushi vinegar in it, it tasted like overcooked plain white rice).

Josh O.

Yelp
Happy hour on a Tuesday was a success. Ate tons of nigiri for under $50. Stuffed and happy!

Debi F.

Yelp
I am from out of town and needed something close, not fancy, just good quality sushi. Yama's is exactly that. I ordered ahead, picked it up - service was friendly and prompt. I will be going back

Shayla N.

Yelp
This was my first time at Yama in Dallas. To be very honest, I always go to Yama in Plano because it's super cheap and they have more items for happy hour. In general, I think everyone should go to Yama at night for cheap high-quality sushi. Before I dive into the food, I should let you know that there's plenty of parking, the wait isn't long, and the service was alright. For food, here are my thoughts: Typical sushi and appetizers were delicious - I recommend. However, I am not a huge fan of their entrees. - Wagyu steak sushi (2 pieces): Not worth the money - the meat is super chewy and there's no flavor - Mapo Tofu: Never ordering this again - it tastes so bland and the tofu was awful (No rice provided). When I told the waitress about it, she said this is a 'Japanese style mapo tofu' not Chinese - Kalbi: Very burnt and super salty (No rice provided) - Agedashi Tofu: If you like the taste of vinegar then you'll like it - $1.50 Sushi: The best - I bought one of everything and it tasted pretty good. - Crispy Katsu Roll: The bomb dot com

Rachel D.

Yelp
My favorite sushi spot! After I found it, I've quickly become a regular! The sushi is amazing, the service is great, and it stays open till 2! What more could you want?

Tony L.

Yelp
1. Seafood creamy udon. 2. Unagi (ell) with crunchy rice. 3. Japanese curry. 4. Yakitori sampler. 5. Okonomiyaki Had more items but I forgot the name of the dishes. Overall, I loved it and would definitely be back for the Japanese appetizers and entrées! And sushi too!

Ruth R.

Yelp
Ordered nigiri - it wasn't fresh but we stomached it. Also ordered tempura but it didn't have any flavor at all. This place was okay at best. What was good was the staff. I won't come back to this place.

Hang S.

Yelp
This is the WORST sushi I ever had I Don't recommend that anyone should come here My girlfriend and I came here because this place had 4 star reviews and I would like to rate this sushi place for 0 star Bad quality, everything was disgusting, the floors were sticky and dirty Wasted my time and money here We found a hair in my sushi and we got diarrheas after eating here !!!!!!!!! The Management did not do anything about it.

Diana R.

Yelp
Food was soooo good and quick! Loved the shrimp tempura& Miso Ramen Service was phenomenal as well.

Alexis C.

Yelp
I can't say enough about the freshly prepared and delicious sushi I've had here over the years. It's budget friendly and service is good, too! I'd recommend checking them out!!

Tina S.

Yelp
The curry is the best ever had. The sashimi salad is very test. We had good time.

Dan N.

Yelp
Yama Sushi is one of the few places that is open and serves sushi late past midnight, so this is spot I go to whenever the cravings hit at night. Pros -Yama Sushi has good quality sushi at a decent price. The sashimi and squid were appetizing and tasted fresh. The quality of the sushi doesn't drop even though they stay open until 2am. -The food here is MUCH better than the other Yama Sushi located in Plano. I would avoid going to the Yama Sushi in Plano because the sushi there was just very bland. -The atmosphere was very cozy. It's a small store and it can be rowdy depending on the types of customers eating, but over all, it felt like a mom and pop store. Cons -The service is frustratingly slow. Don't expect the waiter to refill your water or check up on you very often because it won't happen. I'm a pretty patient person but the waiting and lack of attention was very noticeable. I understand that it can can get busy, but the restaurant here is very small so the poor service is not really an excuse. -The space is very small. You are guaranteed to be wait-listed if you come during dinnertime. My average wait time is at least 20 minutes each time. Pro tip: Because of the wait time and slow service, don't expect to get in and out fast. Make sure to block out at least an hour or two to eat your meal here. The recommendation: If you're suddenly craving sushi at 11pm, then Yama Sushi is the spot you should visit. Just be prepared for the slow service and potential wait time. If you're a normal person that eats sushi when the sun is still out, I would choose a different place to go to.

Julio S.

Yelp
Our friends recommended us this restaurant and it did not disappoint. My overall experience was enjoyable. I ordered the katsudon, the wasabi French fries and 10 salmon nigiri. The katsudon was flavorful and everything I was expecting for. The wasabi fries peaked my interest as I've never tried fries with wasabi mayo and wasabi flakes; they have a unique flavor that I really enjoyed. I went on a Thursday and they had a happy hour special meaning that the salmon nigiris were $1 each (they have a variety of nigiris for $1 and a few for $1.50 each). I'm still amazed that they were just $1 a piece and very delicious. Their menu is very varied, having accessible items as well as having really expensive things like otoro sashimi.

Mike G.

Yelp
Wish I could say something about the food. We walked in, were asked how many in our party, then told they were closed. Don't both, no telling if they'll be open or serve you.
