People living in the San Gabriel Valley boast that Yama Sushi Marketplace sells some of the best sushi in the area (there's also a second spot in Mar Vista, and a third one opening soon in Koreatown). I've seen people call this place a hidden gem, but with over 1.8k reviews on Yelp alone along with the fact that Yama recently celebrated their 40th anniversary, I don't know if that term is applicable anymore [1]. The San Gabriel location has been on my to-eat list for a while now, but I finally decided to come here for lunch after my friend, who was visiting me, came across their Instagram page while researching restaurants.
There is a small parking lot in the back. When we drove in, there were a few empty spots, so parking was easy even though it was peak lunchtime. We entered the market through the back entrance that faced the parking lot.
The inside of the marketplace was small and cozy, so there were no shopping carts, only baskets. The shelves were lined with candy, snacks, drinks, and other merchandise. However, I'm assuming the main reason most people visit (like me) is to buy the famous sushi.
The refrigerated section located in the center-ish area of the store contained a large selection of various sushi and side options. I saw workers occasionally restocking with fresh sushi packages. The choices were relatively affordable as most were approximately $10 or less. This area was a little crowded since there wasn't much aisle space, and some people were walking back and forth looking at all the options while others were standing and trying to decide what to choose.
The seafood counter is located a little farther in, and patrons can either buy the pre-cut packaged seafood or ask the workers to slice them into sashimi on the spot. However, we decided to just buy the premade sushi.
[ Food ]
I felt like treating myself, so I ended up ordering:
* Unagi roll ($7.95)
I love eel, so I had to pick up an unagi roll. The pieces were cute and tiny, but at least the order came with 12 pieces. The eel was savory and a little sweet. I didn't really add any extra soy sauce since I thought the chef(s) added the perfect amount already.
* Chirashi bowl ($21.49)
The chirashi bowl came with a bed of rice covered with a layer of scrambled egg. On top, a beautiful assortment of different seafood was displayed, including octopus, salmon, spicy scallops, squid, tuna, and yellowtail. A lone shiso leaf loaded with ikura sat in the center. I drizzled a little bit of soy sauce over all the seafood for a hint of saltiness while the egg added a slight sweetness; every bite tasted great.
The sushi packages came with ginger, wasabi, and sealed packets of soy sauce.
[ Service ]
The staff working the registers were friendly and quick, so there was basically no line. They also conveniently asked if I needed chopsticks (which I did).
Yama Sushi Marketplace uses Square. When I paid using my credit card that was associated with my Square account, I automatically received the receipt via email, which was convenient.
[ Tips ]
Tax is already included in the prices, so what you see is what you pay.
Keep in mind that there is no sit-down seating since it's a marketplace first and foremost. This worked fine for us since we were going to The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens anyways, so we ate our food there. However, I probably won't come back here in the near future since I generally like to sit down in a restaurant to enjoy my food, but I'm glad I can finally cross this place off my list.
