"Yamato claims to be South Carolina’s original Japanese steakhouse. The dining room is dim and communal, punctuated by teppanyaki theatrics. The most show-stopping trick at Yamato is a mound of rice molded into the shape of a heart, made to look like it’s beating with the deft maneuvering of a spatula, if that doesn’t satisfy diners, the steak and shrimp drenched in housemade yum yum sauce will." - Andre James

I’ve never heard of this place til we were looking on the map for Hibachi places and I’ve gotta say this is the best experience I’ve had at any “cook in front of you” restaurant. Our chef wasn’t annoying, like most I’d been to, and was very immersive with the guests! And the people we were sat with were super entertaining and enthusiastic about the experience as well! For birthdays, they ring a small gong and have the restaurant sing Happy Birthday! And unlike other restaurants, the staff seemed very happy to sing the song! And were entertained by the guests as well. The food was pretty good as well, not to DIE for but very well prepared. All ingredients tasted fresh, including the vegetables which tasted and looked freshly cut. You are given a free appetizer shrimp, soup, salad, and at the end a dessert! It is also not bank account sweating expensive. If you’re in Myrtle beach and looking for hibachi, I say this is the spot to go! Happy summer!!

We visited Yamato while in Myrtle Beach and had an overall okay experience. The restaurant is huge and clearly runs like a well-oiled machine — service was fast, and they definitely have the system down to a science. That said, the ventilation wasn’t the best, and with so many hibachi tables going at once, it got a bit smoky. Our chef felt rushed and didn’t bring much showmanship to the table, which was a little disappointing since we had three kids with us. He only did the classic food toss about five times total, while we saw more interaction and flair happening at other tables nearby. Also, we’ve never had so much rice at a hibachi place — it was seriously about a pound per person! The food itself was just okay; nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable either. It’s a good option if you’re looking for a fast hibachi meal in a lively setting, but we were hoping for a bit more entertainment and engagement for the kids. Never had the food cook so fast, ever.

Google
Food was amazing! Great entertainment watching the chef cook at your table. Service was fast

Anna Svietlova

Google
Hostess was tired and rude. The food was ok but not 5 stars. Very loud. We had some fun. Interesting show with cooking. Family place and good for dates.

Google
We visited this place for the hibachi grill but were somewhat disappointed with the experience. The fried rice and chicken were not to our liking—unfortunately, the chicken was hard and chewy, which made it difficult to enjoy. On a brighter note, the shrimp and vegetable tempura from our order were quite good. Overall, it was a mixed experience for us.

Google
Have been to this awesome restaurant numerous times. Definitely recommend it. Food is always great and service is amazing. If you get something not cooked to your liking, they will cook you another.

Google
Love coming here at the end of our golf trips. Food was great as usual. Traditional Japanese steak house fare. Chef was a little bland but food was on point.

Google
The server was great, the chef was entertaining. There were two young boys at our table and he interacted with them very much and they had a great time. Food was excellent.

Yelp
We walked right in it 4:30 and sat down within a few minutes even though they told us it would be 15 minutes. Our server was super friendly and very knowledgeable and made sure to ask all the right questions. The food was delicious. They give you a ton of rice which is nice But I wish the vegetables were cut up a little more finely. Tempura was great especially the variety of vegetables. The chicken was absolutely delicious made with the best teriyaki sauce. I wish they had noodles. The filet mignon was pretty good but it wasn't really my favorite. I love that you get a sherbet too as well as soup which was good but not the best. Overall the views are gorgeous. We get to see the boat go back and forth. I would definitely be back

Yelp
The food was delicious and the chef was funny and talented. The server and the hostesses were also very nice. This place is NOT for slow eaters or for someone who doesn't eat much. My 2 year old twins and even my 6 year old pick at their food and don't eat an entire plate of much, so the twins at least tend to share at every restaurant. Tonight my 6 year old also was in the mood to nibble and not eat much. So we decided to order for myself, my husband, and one kids meal. The twins shared and the 6 year old shared mine. We were told only two can share We got charged a share fee for two of the kids who didn't even touch the food. I was not happy, I could've bought more kids meals for that. And then we had the gratuity automatically added to the tab. I had over 20% cash tip ready until I saw that. There were only 5 of us, two adults and three kids. So I used that added gratuity as her tip with a few extra in cash to make it exactly 20% (instead of more than like originally planned). Lastly, I was very rushed which is completely understandable, but I was still boxing up 3 meals after cleaning up the kids and passing them off so I could do so (hence the late start). I was the last at the table tending to the boxes and everything around me got cleaned up, busser cart chilling there and everything. I didn't even get to get a to go drink. The entire time we were there it was all rushed. I had to finish eating when we got home. Food: wonderful. Cooking show: fun! Wait time: only a few minutes! Other than that...

Yelp
This was an okay experience. The food and quick to seat was amazing, but I feel like the chefs line's while cooking were a bit cheesy and the diners were unimpressed. Me and my girlfriend got a drink each as well as the dinner. Our bill was about $140. Expect to pay quite a bit here and leave with takeout every time

Tina C.

Yelp
Food is as expected with Japanese hibachi. The filet was cooked perfectly to order. The scallops were fresh and tender without being gritty. Service was excellent. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our drinks server was over within minutes for our drink and food orders. Because of the hibachi style eating the food was fresh from the cooktop so no issues there. Standard hibachi tricks/entertainment. Ambience is upscale casual. It's very dark with classic Japanese touches here and there. Great place for families to come. Prices were on par with other hibachi establishments. I would come here again!

Sabri T.

Yelp
It was very nice. The waiter was very attentive and funny. The chef was very entertaining. The food was good .. I just wish they would have deveined the shrimp. My only complaint was the food was a bit bland and I had to add salt to my meal. The best part was they take reservations .. I wish other Japanese restaurants would do this

Mike T.

Yelp
Awesome entertainment and service by our chef and server, and delicious hibachi food! With our large group taking up two cook areas, we all had a great time and enjoyed the experience.

Steve G.

Yelp
Great time had here! We had a bunch of allergies and the chef did a really good job navigating that. We also had a bunch of drinks and sushi which were all really good! Only downfall was the fact that they are located at Broadway on the beach which is super busy and costs me a ton when the family has to walk through all those shops lol!

Amy A.

Yelp
Always a fun experience and really tasty food! Our server did a really good job keeping drinks filled. Our chef was great, really funny, engaging , and an excellent entertainer.

David G.

Yelp
Hello everyone, This is a must try place if you're in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Located at Broadway at the Beach and there is parking! They take reservations so please make sure you make them. Wait time can be up too 2 hrs. Yamato has phenomenal Habachi aside from that they have great appetizers and sushi. All the workers are very friendly and entertaining. Very interactive dinner. The service was amazing. A MUST TRY PLACE!!!

Teresa L.

Yelp
Filet mignon was A+ quick service & sauces were yum yum!!! My opinion Better than Benihanas!

Maddie W.

Yelp
Went Yesterday to celebrate my birthday. Waited maybe 30 minutes to be seated for a party of 9. Food was amazing, Service top notch, the chef was super nice & funny. Prices were very reasonable. Our waitress Cynthia was hands down amazing super sweet. Will definitely be back here!

Jess D.

Yelp
The service by the waitress was efficient, but not very enthused (understandable, but hey, it's your job). Nice showmanship by the chef. The prices were very much on the expensive side, though. The drink, a frozen margarita, was on the small side. The food was tasty, with plenty of leftovers, so overall a fun experience if you're looking for a dinner and a show.

John W.

Yelp
Food was great needed doggy bag . Great atmosphere . Went for a birthday party good times.

Bella B.

Yelp
Very fun and delicious restaurant that every age will enjoy! We came in as a very large party that needed two tables. We had a reservation but be aware you need everyone in your party to be there before you sit down. The food is great here with standouts being the gyoza, clear soup and fried rice. The chef wasn't as talented as some of the others I've watched but it seems like the quality of chef varied as some others where doing more advanced tricks. He was still very funny and a good chef! The waiters where also very nice people and even helped us celebrate my birthday! Very fun restaurant but be aware it can be a little bit of a struggle for large groups.

Diamond R.

Yelp
This place was like any other hibachi but they did have the open window to see the speed boats in the back. Our cook was pretty cool as well has our server. The only thing I can say bad is that it wasn't very clean and the chef never seasoned the chicken very well. He was super funny though I must say.

LaVonne L.

Yelp
The food was good, the show was good when they cook it. There wasn't anything wrong with the food. It was delicious. I just did not appreciate being rushed. They gave so much food. It took more than 10 minutes to consume the mountain of food that they gave me. I ended up taking about 90% of it home. While I'm still trying to get my food down there bringing out the ice cream. I just did not appreciate being rushed.

Elena K.

Yelp
strongly recommend this place! The portions are huge. Food is tasty. Atmosphere is perfect and friendly. I was surprised how fast guys are working

Raelyn R.

Yelp
I wish I could give more stars!!! First off the service was AMAZING!! We had the sweetest waitress with such a bubbly attitude! I just loved her! We got there right after there open, we sat at the sushi bar and it was perfect! The food was amazing. I wish I had taken photos but it was so good I couldn't wait lol. They also make an amazing old fashion if you like bourbon it's definitely one you should try. We will be coming back!

Derek T.

Yelp
You always know what to expect food-wise from a place like this. What you're really paying for is the experience, and Yamato delivers. Our chef was fantastic and my kids were absolutely enthralled by the performance. As soon as we told them that this was our dinner plan, they were highly excited and Yamato did not disappoint at all. It was a busy evening, but we were seated fairly quickly (making an appointment helped), and everything was great from there. What I'd definitely improve is piping in more cool air, because it does get warm in there on a busy evening with all the grills running.

Tom M.

Yelp
Exactly what you expect but bigger portions than most places. The server and chef were very nice and super attentive.

Kaylan B.

Yelp
Okay, first off, the food was excellent, 10/10. I got the filet mignon, which was delicious, and I tried my dad's shrimp and it was SO good. Our server Rob was amazing. He was super fun, joked with my little brother, and so attentive. We didn't have to ask him for anything, and he went above and beyond. Example: He saw how my aunt and uncle fed their baby off of their plates, so when dessert came, he brought him his own sherbet to make sure they could eat theirs. Our chef was awesome, too. Everything was delicious and the show was really fun. All in all, it was a great experience.

Abegail A.

Yelp
Grabbed dinner at Yamato as it was one of the few restaurants at Broadway at the Beach that you could make online reservations ahead of time, which was huge given the 4th of July holiday. Food was pretty average and nothing spectacular. Hibachi experience was lacking, with our chef just mainly cooking in front of us with little show (began with an initial happy face fire, a few of us at the table caught some cooked chicken, and ended with the onion volcano). He did have some jokes, though. Service was okay in the beginning, but we didn't see our waitress again until after our chef finished cooking when she offered our entire table to go containers. We literally just got all our food, can we actually enjoy it with more beverages?! They definitely rush you here, so it's hard to enjoy your meal/company. A credit card fee of about $5 is applied to your bill and there's an automatic 18% gratuity added regardless of your party size. Gratuity is also based on the added credit card fee and tax, and not just the food/beverages you actually purchased so tips ends up being a more than 20% for non-existent service and a waitress who wasn't familiar with items on the menu. With so many other restaurants at Broadway, I suggest skipping this one and just dealing with the possibly long waits. Also, skip the frozen drinks which were lacking in alcohol.

Chris H.

Yelp
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and our time spent here. There was so much food and leftovers were great the next day. People in previous reviews complained about being rushed- might be that way during peak seasons, but the waitress and owners were very patient with us. We took our baby with us and also requested dairy free options (no butter) and they made his portion separate! They were very careful not to mix any dairy. The soup, salad and hibachi were all fantastic for the price. We had a great time!

Rick G.

Yelp
The food is very good. Items were cooked correctly (seafood was not rubbery and steaks cooked as requested). The waiter was busy, but attentive to needs at the table. Our chef was fixated on calling all the women "mama". It was a little creepy. After the meal was done, they hurried you along to make room for the next seating. While I understood, it does diminish the experience. I would likely go again, since the food was really good.

Ashley W.

Yelp
So this was a complex visit. This is how I would break it down: Chef 5/5 Wait Staff 5/5 Food 4/5 Ambiance 2/5 Front Desk Staff/ Supervisor: 0/5 Overall, everything was fine. We were a big party with a reservation, two people in our party were going to be ten minutes late. I'm not sure what transpired before I walked in, but everyone was upset, confused and short... it was incredibly uncomfortable and I would've rather just left, but as we went to walk out the last two people in our party arrived and wanted to stay. They ended up seating us quickly, so it was really purposeless drama/ poor communication. The server and chef were great, but still probably wouldn't come back, not worth the stress.

Doll J.

Yelp
The food was tasty and the cook was fun. Service was excellent but it was a bit pricey. They serve a lot of food so be ready for leftovers. My issue was is that I ordered shrimp and the shrimp was not cleaned thoroughly.

Patrice N.

Yelp
Over priced !!!!!!!!! Food was very good tho . Our server was amazing as was the chef ... not worth the $

Marlena L.

Yelp
The salad dressings and sherbet at the end of every meal keeps me coming back for more. The cook was way to fast and didn't put on a show like they normally do but the food was still great.

Julio L.

Yelp
Yamato, Our cook was outstanding, server was good, and food delicious. Would have given at least 4 stars, until I noticed how the tables were set before customers arrived. Employee wiped down table with a rag, set down plates, while touching the top of them, and the silver ware. Didn't appreciate how only 3 people ate at my table, and a service charge of 18% was given. But you know "it is what it is"

Patrick L.

Yelp
Food, Service, and drinks were good. Would have given 4 stars but they charge a credit card fee which is not disclosed until you receive the bill. Will not return.

carol m.

Yelp
So this was disappointing. Should have known when our hibachi chef was Hispanic. So presentation was poor. The wait staff was just okay. Soft shell app was served in between courses. So obviously just a rush them in and out. It is on the boardwalk. Not recommended if you have ever been to a real Benihana type of place.

Robin-Pawel B.

Yelp
Food is wonderful. I highly suggest making a reservation. Eat fast once you get your food. They are in a hurry to get you in and out.

Emily B.

Yelp
This was the only place open nearby on a Tuesday night. This was our last choice of anywhere we wanted to go but it ended up being super yummy! The chef was super friendly and fun! He created a whole great experience for us. Large portions. You get salad, soup, meat/rice, and sorbet dessert included. Portion so big we both had leftovers! Would definitely go back if in the area again.

Janelle M.

Yelp
It was okay... the portions a very large But the chef could have applied more time into the fried rice. There is no social distancing... 10 ppls were seating at an area that would be better suited for 8. The restaurant could use a good deep cleaning. The bar area and dining room has an old stale smell that is likely due to the old carpet. They should invest in new flooring. I'm sure they can afford it.. it's in a prime location and busy on a Tuesday evening.

Rodger L.

Yelp
The food was typical Japanese steakhouse good. The cook was funny and prepared the meal well. The waiter was ok. We go here because they take reservations. Wanted no more than 5 minutes for seating once we arrived.

Al T.

Yelp
A good place but very busy: reservations may take to 3-4 hours of wait time in peak season. Food is good.

Chip P.

Yelp
Large portions of food. Tastes very good. Not the most upscale place, but that won't keep me from coming back.

Evan G.

Yelp
YAMATO at Broadway At The Beach in Myrtle Beach is a great place to go for delicious hibachi and sushi and much more in a cool and fun atmosphere. I really like the location and everything that they have available here. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have everything that you need for the best meal.

Manuel A.

Yelp
My family came in last week. I would avoid this location, they don't know anything about customer service. The chef was dripping sweat in our food.

Jessie O.

Yelp
I've been here one time years ago. I was in town and super hungry and thought of this place. Definitely have to make reservations and thank God I expected that. Otherwise would've been 2 1/2 hours wait. Great food great employees.

KT C.

Yelp
This is definitely more targeted as a touristy vacation thing tbh. There is a push in getting the food to diners quickly and get them out the door so more can be seated. For a Tuesday, it was still very crowded. We were seated with another couple we were dining iut with and then with others that made it a full table of ten. The chef came out and cooked tableside, but having been to numerous other establishments like this, I can say chef was just going thru the motions with little showmanship, which is kinda what you are paying for. Food was just ok. We all commented that we missed the customary japanese noodles and that the rice while plentiful was a poor substitute. The vegetables were also a big disappointment tbh. Grated tiny shreds of carrot are hard to find. Our friend ordered sashimi, and it came with salad, and before anyone was done with salad chef was dishing out vegetables already. All in all something to do once, but once done, that's it for us. For the price way too expensive to pay out for a so so experience especially when you're rushed in and out. Not a place to linger to enjoy. You are expected to eat quickly and leave. In closing, a once and done experience for us at Broadway at the Beach location.

Chance D.

Yelp
I really really liked this grill. I think the food was delicious and I would go again. The only thing I did not like about this grill is that they touch the plates and silverware but otherwise the cook was nice. It was fun. he threw shrimp and let us catch it in our mouths and I think it was an overall fun and wonderful family experience.

Megan L.

Yelp
Awesome hibachi place! Definitely the most fun hibachi place I've encountered. We had a couple of kids at our table and the chefs catered to them to make sure they were comfortable and had fun and it was awesome! The food was delicious as well!

Katherine L.

Yelp
Food was delicious but we were definitely rushed through our dinner. There were 14 of us in two tables. The other people at our table weren't rushed. Aggravating

Sabrina R.

Yelp
Pretty terrible service. As mentioned in a few other reviews, the hostess was rude. We asked for a non-hibachi table and she gave no instructions on where to sit let alone lead us to any seating. We wandered around the restaurant and found a room where their sushi bar is and it took the waitress forever to serve us. We asked for menus and only got one menu to share among all 4 of us. Food eventually came out and was placed on a stand for 15 minutes without the waitress noticing and other people walking by it. My family asked for sauce to go with their meal and it never came out. The waitress never offered to refill our drinks. It was overall terrible service for such an expensive meal.

Sharon C.

Yelp
Nastiest frontdesk amd msnaher rver encountered. They gollowed us oit and insultrd the 2 under 25 girls with us. Im 69, another 67. 2 others over 50! They insulyrd the girls attire. Which was just the immature front desk girls issues. Followed us out front door and threatened us all! I had never seen or dpoke yo thrs people ever before. Buy overheard them insukting comments when I eas leaving. I only went back inside yo ask whete my leftover boxes were and the nasty mgr lady threatened me, even though I told her I was told they thtew it awY and to leave or they wete calling cops on me!

Tracy K.

Yelp
First experience for my 10 year old and he loved it. Our chef was the best and had all of us laughing. Food was good and a lot of it. Very busy place and usually a wait. Either way if you have a group of 9, this is a great choice to eat at.

Kelly M.

Yelp
Combining quality service and presentation, this is one of the very best Hibachi Grills I have ever visited. We had 19 people in our group and the server interacted with all of us. The rice/yum yum sauce was very good and everyone stated that their steak and chicken were amazing.

Michael B.

Yelp
This is a must read y'all look at my review history there is none. I leave no bad reviews for no one but this needs to be known. This place is horrible. It literally made us sick on top everything else. I have a video that I'm gonna post on my page y'all check it out. It's pretty sad. so we're sitting down eating and the cook probably left 20 minutes before the manager Bianca comes up to our table to rush us. She states to us if y'all need anything y'all let us know OK while straightening up the table and picking up things. Then turns to the waiters and whispers something so I said it seems like you're rushing us. She says well I am there's over a two hour wait. So I just let it go because my youngest daughter thats only 2 was still eating so I basically took her plate from her and I gather my seven children up and my wife and we leave the table. Just so you're aware the only reason why we sat there so long is because my 3 year old daughter peed all over her self and my wife had to go get,a change of clothes from the closest clothing store so we were waiting on her as well. So when I was walking out I wanted to talk with Bianca the manger and when I was talking with her I was using my hands because I am a hand talker. She said for one your going to stop moving your hands in my face and I was not putting my hands in her face I was simply talking with them. And she states I'm done and walks away while I'm trying to explain to her my kids were still eating and she states you been sitting there for more then a hour for one I waited just like everybody else to get my seat and two there was no time frame on the reservation. I really hope I get contacted by some upper management that's for sure. While I was walking out the host at the front told me to get the f out you b while my kids was standing there. This behavior was not only incredibly rude but also extremely unprofessional.

Jeremy C.

Yelp
We got a reservation a few days ahead of time. You are going to want to call as far in advance as you can because they book up. Our reservation was for 9 PM which wasn't bad, it was just too late to eat dinner. The waiter was so chill and provided exceptional service, always making sure we had enough water and everything. The chef was very funny and super nice to everybody, he cracked jokes and made everybody laugh countless times. The food was beyond delicious and I would definitely go right back again.
