We just had dinner at Yamato in Turkey Creek, and I decided to write a review while it's fresh in my mind. First, I need to clarify that this was my first ramen/poke bowl experience. I love Thai, Chinese, Mediterranean, Mexican, and most all other types of food, so I figured this would be great - and it probably is great if ramen/poke bowls are your thing.
We were welcomed and seated quickly, and our server Jason explained the entire process. He answered all our questions and was absolutely great. I ordered the Miso Ramen with shrimp and duck, seaweed, bok choy, corn and udon. My precious bride ordered a salad bowl with crabmeat and assorted veggies. We got the pork buns for an appetizer. The dishes looked beautiful, the pork buns were interesting and pretty tasty with the dipping sauce. The wife's salad was good and fresh, but the crabmeat was two small strips of imitation crabmeat.
As for me, tonight was the night I found out that I don't like Miso Ramen. The duck was basically duck bones with duck skin, the shrimp was hard and rubbery with tails intact, the udon noodles were good, the bok choy and corn were, well, bok choy and corn. There was also a boiled egg amongst the flotsam and jetsam.
Everything was swimming in a pale, shrimpy-smelling swill of miso with a square of seaweed floating on top.
I just didn't like it. I ate it, because (a) I ordered it, and (b) I was paying for it. We're going back to try the hibachi, and I'm sure it will be fine. The four stars are for the cleanliness of the place, the attentive staff (way to go, Jason!), and the fresh ingredients. I stopped short of five stars due only to the terribly overcooked shrimp and the stinginess with the imitation crabmeat. The fact that I didn't like what I ordered isn't the restaurant's fault. Sidenote - we both had the bubble tea (boba?), and it was really good.
