The 16 Best Restaurants In Northern Liberties - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"It's exceptionally rare to get the best of both worlds, and Yanaga in Northern Liberties proves it. Up front, the Japanese a la carte experience is totally meh, but the omakase in back is worth every penny (or, in this case, $150 for 20 pieces). That's where you'll enjoy buttery scallops coated with preserved lemon and truffle soy, as well as delicate golden-eyed snapper with monkfish vinaigrette in a setting as laidback as a room full of anime collectibles. Oh wait—that's exactly where this speakeasy-style meal takes place." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Newest Restaurants In Philadelphia

"After pitstops in Fishtown and University City, Chef Yanaga has opened his namesake izakaya and sushi omakase place in Northern Liberties. The menu features duck onigiri, kappo crispy potato with yumyum sauce, and mains like fried chicken thigh sandwiches and pork tantan mazemen.   We checked out Yanaga Izakaya Kappo. Read our thoughts here." - candis mclean, alison kessler

Yanaga Kappo Izakaya - Review - Northern Liberties - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"There are dozens of sushi spots where you can get the same quality of tuna rolls or pork gyoza as Yanaga Kappo Izakaya. And you should head to them instead, if only to avoid duck onigiri that looks like an oily hockey puck. This Northern Liberties spot has a long bar but no liquor license (it’s BYOB for now), anime playing on TV, and neon signs that say things like, “sushi addict.” And yet, we found ourselves so bored at dinner that we did napkin origami to pass the time. All of this would be forgivable if the food was worthwhile. But everything ranged from flavorless (like the vegetable tantan mazeman noodles) to hideous (like a crab roll with a part-butter, part-soy sauce dip). We’ll check in later when the bar isn’t just a showpiece. But for now, it’s a place that you should use only when you’ve already eaten and want to re-watch Dragon Ball Z." - Candis R. McLean

Not gonna lie to you guys, this is like one of the best Japanese food in Philly. I love this place like so much, even my mom always craving theirs food and wanted to go back. They have a really really good food. They have a good service either. Nick my Bartender he is great, he can create anything cocktails that you want to, just tell him what do you want. The Manager Mike is a great man.

I had high hopes for this new spot in the area since I love exploring sushi places, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. The food was mediocre at best, and nothing stood out as worth the price. Our six-oyster platter was presented nicely, but one oyster looked mangled and unappealing. ( bottom right oyster in my photo) The sushi rolls were just okay—the rainbow roll had very thin sashimi slices on top & the roll only had imitation crab, which was unexpected. Yanaga is great if you’re looking for Japanese inspired cuisine. Look elsewhere if you’re looking for something more elevated than AYCE quality sashimi. On the bright side, my partner and I really enjoyed our drinks!

What a great meal! Started with shrimp nachos a must order item (just get it), rice crispy’s (seared sushi rice with tuna on top - yum) and steaming hot and tasty edamame with sea salt. Tried other items but those are my favorites! Enjoy.

Best restaurant in Northern Liberties without a doubt - would argue best restaurant in Philadelphia. Recently did the Omakase experience and could not recommend it enough. Chef is the best in the city and his attention to detail unmatched.

Very millennial nerd vibes, which I dig as a millennial nerd. We went here on a Monday and got to enjoy happy hour drinks and food. Very tasty!

This new NoLibs restaurant and bar serves absolutely delicious Japanese dishes off an eclectic menu that includes street food and raw fish. Seasoning and taste abound with every bite. Attentive and knowledgeable staff are very helpful. Decor includes anime and other aspects of Japanese culture. The prices are reasonable, especially during happy hour 4-6:00 pm).

The food here was good - chicken karage and tuna crispy rice 10/10! Servers were super friendly and the bartender had a great vibe. The one downside is it is very tiny, can get muggy inside. I would definitely eat here again, but for takeout!

Wow I gotta say, this place is stellar. So happy to have them in the neighborhood and plan to be a regular. Amazing food, a great menu that definitely seems worth multiple trips to taste it all. Overall highly recommended, you won’t regret going here. Reasonable prices too and attentive staff. Love it!
