10 Places That Are Always on Fire

"In the 13th century, when Marco Polo visited the then-Persian city of Baku, he mentioned numerous mysterious flames that could be found all over the region at various places of the Abşeron Peninsula. These fires gave Azerbaijan the moniker “Land of Fire.” Even five centuries after Marco Polo, French writer Alexandre Dumas witnessed natural flames in a mysterious fire temple. One can easily understand how these natural flames must have amazed and terrified people in history, and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the natural fires of Azerbaijan are considered to have played a crucial part in the creation of Zoroastrianism — a mystical faith, centered around ceremonial fire cults, which appeared in the region around 2,000 years ago. The natural flames of Azerbaijan can be attributed to its enormous gas reserves. When exploitation of these reserves began, most of the natural fires burned out, due to a reduction in underground pressure. Of the natural fires that burn today in Azerbaijan, Yanar Dağ is arguably the most impressive. A 10m long wall of fire, that never extinguishes, is burning continuously alongside the edge of the hill, which naturally is at its most spectacular at night, when tourists and locals alike view the fire from a nearby teahouse. Local lore states that it was a shepherd that accidentally ignited the fire in the 1950s by tossing a cigarette, and that it has burnt ever since." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Another miracle of nature, a perpetual fire which erupts from the bottom of the hill. It's a must visit spot in Baku. Offers some scenic locations to capture snaps. Has a cafe and museums as well and an archaeological site.

Yanar Dag is an interesting spot to visit, though I’d describe it as more of an average attraction rather than an exceptional one. What makes it unique is the natural gas that burns continuously from the mountainside—a fascinating natural phenomenon that's definitely worth seeing. Watching the flames flicker is mesmerizing and adds a unique charm to the experience, especially if you visit during the evening when the fire looks even more vibrant. We went at night, and while the burning flames were the highlight, there wasn’t much else to explore during those hours. I do feel the ticket prices could be more affordable, as they seemed a bit high for what’s on offer. However, the on-site bakery was a pleasant surprise, offering decent snacks to enjoy while taking in the atmosphere. Overall, it was a good experience for us, and I’d recommend visiting if you’re in the area—just be sure to time your visit for the evening to get the best views of the fire. During our tour tour from Baku, we were brought here which is about 20 km from town. This natural wonder is also known as 'Burning Mountain'. According to one version a shepherd by mistake lit a match here and since then the fire is continuously burning. The locals consider this place as sacred and it has become a pilgrimage center for them and tourists. Now it is a protected site under Tourism Department of Government who maintains it very well. It is open from 10 to 10 with the facility of clean toilets and souvenir shops. Worth seeing...

You better come at least an hour before closing, because there could be no one at the ticket office. Fire is worth to watch, there are a lot of seats near the fire to sit.
