Celebrate Summer With a Delicious Caipirinha in D.C. - Eater DC

"Perched atop NoMa’s new Marriott, this snazzy rooftop venue for sky-high ceviche and Latin seafoods sends out minty caipirinhas made with cachaça, rum, passion fruit, and lime. The cocktail list ($16-$19) also loops in lots of Latin fruits, tequila, and pisco." - John Besche, Tierney Plumb

NoMa’s Newest Rooftop Bar Serves Sky-High Ceviches and Mojitos - Eater DC

"NoMa’s rooftop renaissance continues this week with the opening of Yara, a scenic new spot to sample refreshing caipirinhas, Peruvian street foods, and gold-dusted octopus across the 13th floor of the Washington Marriott Capitol Hill. Yara’s Japanese-Peruvian head chef Yuki Nakandakari previously led the kitchen at D.C.’s Ocopa Restaurant and Baltimore’s Pisco Restaurant." - Tierney Plumb

Received a $25 voucher and a recommendation to try the restaurant by the front desk, so after I settled in I went up to give it a shot. I waited so long for service I started to poke my head into the back to see if I could spot someone. Was asked to seat myself and then ordered the pork rib. The food came out quickly and was only a little above average. The food was under seasoned and the pork was stringy and nearing over-cooked. Was shocked to see a 20% “service charge” on my single-person receipt along with a “environmental service” charge. The food was alright, but it was not a $42.53 4oz pork rib. This is an extreme level of junk fee that I’ve never seen before at a restaurant. I’d steer clear from here, I’ll be complaining to the hotel on checkout. Update: hotel staff said the restaurant was independently run and they can’t control it, but have heard other complaints as well. They left a note for the restaurant manager to give me a call, but he never did. Would double down on the steer clear.

Yara is a beautiful restaurant with a view that anyone traveling to Washington should see (perfect for taking pictures as well). On the other hand the food is to die for, one of the best foods on DC! The short rib is a must, as well as the wasabi entree and the volcano roll. The work behind the menu is evident and well thought. The cocktails are delicious and generous with the liquor, not mere sugar or sparkling water. Definitely this is a must when you visit DC!

Every element of our experience at Yara was exemplary. My boyfriend and I arrived, wearing our travel clothes, and the hostesses treated us as if we were visiting royalty. Their kindness had us feeling at home right away. They allowed us to choose whichever table we were most comfortable at, and didn't mind when we moved because we were too cold (the heaters did warm a majority of the outdoor patio though). Our server, Eric, was extremely attentive and hospitable. He asked for my dietary restrictions, and made sure that not a drop of dairy touched my plate, even after ordering a chicken dish that I hadn't realized came with a dairy sauce. Without my asking, he ensured that the dish came out according to my needs. The chef even catered to my boyfriend's inability to handle spice, and removed spicy peppers from the tacos that we shared. Without detracting any flavor from the dish, he substituted sweet peppers instead, and even sent out spicy sauce and hot peppers on the side for me, so that I could still enjoy some heat. Eric also communicated to the chef and kitchen staff that we would be sharing the main dish, and the chicken came out already cut in half for us to make sharing easier. The chef also spoke with us a few times to welcome us and to make sure that we were enjoying everything. The bartenders did a wonderful job too, I enjoyed the pisco sour with the beef tacos and a glass of sauv blanc with the main chicken dish. Overall, my partner and I were blown away with the level of hospitality here; everyone we encountered truly went above and beyond. We wish Yara all the best and we are honored to have been a part of their soft opening.

Located on the rooftop of the Marriott Hotel in NoMa, Yara opened in perfect time for the summertime weather ☀️ and crowd! My friend and I sat on the inside of the 360 bar, because the seats outside were all taken - much to be expected with the great weather and trendy new spot alert! We were really impressed with the amazing service! Their mixologist - Jacques, made some incredible cocktails which we will definitely go back to try again. The music and food were also magnificent… The food and cocktail menu definitely showcase the Latin fusion dynamism that Chef Yuki was aiming for. I’m looking forward to going back to explore more of the menu, because from the looks of people sampling other dishes - everyone seemed impressed.

Jeff - Host Ximena - Server Rooftop outside seating is beautiful. The music brings a dope vibe. Mixed with the summer breeze you could forget you’re not dining in a Latin country. The drinks were great. I had a mocktail and gf had a mimosa bar with the Chica Morada. She loved it. Got the pollo and waffles. Really liked the rocoto pepper jam. Sweet and spicy. Delicious! The waffle was a little hard and cold. Chicken was warm had a good rotisserie flavor. My gf did not like the salchi + fries. The fries were good but both types of sausage weren’t as tasty as she expected. The flavor of the dish didn’t meet her expectation either. All in all a decent experience. Lovely rooftop and vibe. Nice staff. Brunch wasn’t a home run but found out it was their first day of brunch service. I would love to check out their dinner service.

What a great and sophisticated place to go to, excellent location with amazing scenery of the city and modern world atmosphere, the exquisite food menu prepared by such a talented chef Yuki Nakandakari is the highlight of the place with his Japanese-Peruvian flavors fusion. Tasty drinks, and very comfortable and chic sets seating, definitely a perfect place for a date with your special someone or to celebrate special occasion with your group of friends.

Phenomenal food. The chef even came out to greet and congratulate our friend who was celebrating her Bachelorette party. Also importantly the people working in the staff appear happy which helps elevate the atmosphere. I can't wait to visit again when I'm in town!

Incredible culinary experience, ambiance and professional staff. Chef Yuki is a dedicated master of his craft, blending the best of Peruvian and Japanese, a fusion that dates back to Japanese who immigrated to Peru over 100 years ago. There are dishes here that you won’t find at any other Peruvian restaurant in the entire US. Make sure you try the Andino Caliente ceviche. This is some of the best food I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. Shoutout to Troy at the bar, a true mixologist. Looking forward to returning again soon.

Yelp
Yara is a really cool rooftop on top of the Marriott Capitol Hill. It's somewhat off the beaten path, so it's not as popular as the other DC rooftops that are located in the trendier spots, which I actually like! We attempted to dine outside but it was a bit too chilly even with the heat lamps so we had to take the party inside :) The outdoor space is pretty impressive. It's large and has TV's so that you can come grab a drink and a bite and catch a game or two. It has traditional seating and of course the lounge setup which is "sexy" but awkward if you're trying to eat. Indoor is small but does have a cozy feel. It also has a nice size indoor/outdoor bar if you want to grab a bite and chill right there. Yara features a Latin cuisine and the food was really good. We had the only sushi offering they have and it was fantastic. For entrees I had the Ahi Tuna over risotto and my friend had the half chicken. Our server seemed new and a bit overwhelmed. Her colleagues did a good job trying to cover for her. I had to deduct a point for that, but otherwise, Yara was great and I can't wait for the next warm evening to take full advantage of Yara!!

Yelp
Server: April R. is the absolute best. She was very attentive and I was very impressed. Yara Caipirinha - made by April- 10/10. Perfectly sweet. I got 2. I would come back again for this. Mixto Diablo - super tasty. 9/10. Highly recommend. Dessert: the tres leche is mid. I don't recommend.

Yelp
This is a great spot that is on top of the Marriott Hotel. The rooftop is gorgeous and we went at night during the summer time, so there was a nice breeze. The place was packed when I got there, but luckily I made a reservation. I definitely recommend making a reservation. I had the Pollo Loco Sandwich, and not to be dramatic, but this might be the best chicken sandwich I have ever had. The chicken was juicy and tender, the bread was toasted and soft. I believe the side of fries is actually yuca, I could be wrong, but either way they were delicious. I definitely recommend this spot if you are in town or just in the area, a little pricey, but they give you so much food so what is there to dislike? There's also a bar, so if you are just wanting to pick up a quick drink, this is a solid place to consider. I'm glad I decided to give this place a try, 10s a tossed the board

Yelp
I've been looking forward to going to Yara for a few months now. It is located on the rooftop of the new NoMa Marriott Hotel. I was able to check it out yesterday evening for drinks and a light bite. It was such a vibe! My friend and I sat at the bar outside. Our bartender was great! He checked on us frequently and had great recommenations! To drink I had the Cafecita, their version of an espresso martini We had a special ceviche option that was not on the menu with scallops, halibut, shrimp and leche de tiger which was absolutely amazing! We also had a little visitor that caught us completely off guard (a praying mantis). One of the servers was gracious enough to lead the critter onto a tray and set him off somewhere safely after I mentioned my bug phobia lol. All in all, I had a great experience at Yara. Definitely a rooftop I look forward to going back to and trying out more options!

Yelp
We stopped pass while taking a stroll around the neighborhood. Brian was waiting our table and he was very kind, engaging, and gave us great recommendations! I had my go to, espresso martini! I've had better but this one was still pretty good especially since it wasn't the premade nitro kind. I did not like that another server flipped and used the handle of the teardrop looking bar spoon to move around coffee beans IN my drink... then proceeded to argue me down about how it was sanitary. The math did not add up. For food I had the Adino Caliente ceviche which has cooked trout! The presentation is a show, with smoke and a intro to the Chef himself! I was not a fan of either the cancha or quinoa tostadas--one or both of those could go (idr which is which) They do introduce a crunchy dimension to the dish besides the chips. My hot date had the acevichado uramaki roll (not pictured). Easily a 10/10. We would return and try out some other dishes. They will be serving brunch soon, so that'll be fun to explore too!

Yelp
1 word: exquisite The ceviche was the perfect balance of sour and spicy. The sushi had a special crunch in the middle and the rice to fish ratio made each bite better and better. The food and ambiance of Yara is beautifully presented. Very different than other places I've been to! The pictures say it all.

Yelp
NoMa's newest rooftop has finally opened its doors at the Marriott Capitol Hill & you'll definitely want to check it out. With breathtaking views & amazing drinks, this rooftop is the perfect spot to meet up w/ friends for a start to a fun night out or a romantic date night by the fire pit. This new spot specializes in Latin American cuisine w/ a focus on seafood & Peruvian street food. You'll have a wide variety of ceviches to choose from and what I love most about this menu is that Yara also incorporates Japan's influence on Peru with a selection of sushi rolls. I really enjoyed the "Yara Caipirinha" & the passion fruit was the perfect touch to this drink. It was extremely refreshing & absolutely delicious. For our appetizer, we decided to order the "Andino Caliente" ceviche, which was my first time experiencing ceviche this way. When you order this dish, you'll get a special visit from Yara's executive chef Yuki Nakandakari & he'll explain why this dish is so special. My favorite dish by far has to be the "Pollo A La Brasa" - the chicken was very well seasoned & flavorful. The fresh salad on the side w/ the salsa verde was magnificent. If you're looking for something new & different, I recommend that you check out Yara!

Yelp
A great rooftop with OK drinks and service. On the surface, this place is great. The venue is beautiful, overlooks some cool sights, and it just feels sleek. If you're looking for a fancy-ish place to grab drinks on a rooftop, Yara Rooftop is a fantastic option. Thing is, the food/drinks here are just OK. This is not the kind of place with a complex cocktail program or super unusual food options - it's pretty much similar to other rooftops in the area. Service is also painfully slow, but that might be unavoidable given how busy this place tends to be.

Yelp
Yara is located on the rooftop of the Marriott Hotel in NOMA. It's a smaller venue but beautiful decor. The highlight of the restaurant is obviously their outdoor rooftop seating but unfortunately for us, it was storming the night we went. We were a little past our reservation time but the staff was still able to get us seated. Our waitress was Peruvian and helped explain the menu options. The venue was celebrating Peruvian Independence week and had a speciality menu offered. The couple next to us knew the Chef and recommended we order the lamb shank, rice, and beans from the special menu. THIS WAS AMAZING! From the first bite of the beans to the lamb that was literally melting off the bone with every stab of our forks. The portion is large enough to feed 2 people comfortably. The first few bites, we sat in silence just so content to eat. We definitely cleaned the plate right off. I hope they decide to fully add this to their regular menu. Would highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
Very good vegetarian ceviche. That is much appreciated. But overall, food is hit or miss. I also felt a bit sick after leaving there. Though I'm not 100% sure whether it was a result of eating their food, it is potentially noteworthy. In other news, there is a single gender-neutral bathroom which I find to be highly disconcerting. They could have given an option for that or just separated the sexes, rather than make people feel uncomfortable. I hate sharing a restroom with men.

Yelp
I would come back here anytime! Fabulous meal and service! New favorite place!! The Arroz con Pollo was the best I have had. I will be back!

Yelp
Best peruvian in the dmv. Chef yuki is wonderful. The space is amazing. The ceviches hot and cold with passion fruit leche de tigre and the andrean ceviche was wonderful. Tuna picante causa is amazing. Acevichado uramaki roll was excellent. Fyi. People judge places with 3 to 5 entrees. Not just one. This place is the best in the dmv. #mrperu #peruviankingthings of the DMV approves 100%!!!!!!! I literally been to every peruvian spot in the dmv. I know my stuff.

Yelp
If you haven't already tried Yara, the rooftop restaurant at the newest Marriott hotel in NoMA, you're missing out. This Japanese fusion with Peruvian roots is Yuki Nakandakari's latest creation. We loved the mix of fresh seafood and organic vegetables, perfectly presented. It's rare that new restaurants are able to manage the volume of people, and smoothly execute their delivery. Not Yara. We felt welcomed and taken care of. Yuki (head chef) even came out to socialise with guests, sat at our table and explained the origins of our mean. Which we loved! This is a perfect open air spot for the summer, with incredible view of D.C.!

Yelp
The food is amazing! The chef even comes on t to make sure you're happy with your order. Large portions so be careful, but I absolutely didn't try anything that I didn't end up loving. The avocado hummus, the purple potatoes, the sushi, the chicken, the chicken sandwich, THE DRINKS. Seeing people in here on dates, with their children, and friends, it serves a multitude of customer types. Beautiful view and rooftop area, lovely. Service is amazing. Will recommend and will return. I'd take pictures of the plates, but alas, they're gone lol. Beware, if you don't like flavor, this is not the place for you. Small suggestion, bigger (read: taller) chairs at the gas fire tables.

Nicolette M.

Yelp
The vibe was nothing special, super loud. The service was not good. The drinks were weak and weird. Food was just alright. Salmon in the ceviche was low quality and a very small portion. Definitely would not go back. Waste of money

Meg M.

Yelp
Yara was fantastic! The restaurant sits on top of the Marriott in NoMa and has beautiful views of DC. The food was delicious and I loved that the chef, Yuki Nakandakari, came out to share some causa samples with the guests. We all agreed that the food was high quality. The service was a little wonky but that was to be expected with a new restaurant. There is also parking right next door for a reasonable price. I will definitely be back!

Angela T.

Yelp
Beautiful views and delicious food. Highly recommend the ceviche and guacajole hummus with quinoa chips. Excellent service and Nathan was "AMAZING"!

Yelp
I had an okay time at Yara. The staff were super friendly and accommodating (they have blankets for cold rooftop moments haha). Service wasn't the best, but the chicken was really really good. It reminded me of elevated Sardi's (Peruvian Restaurant).

Antoinette E.

Yelp
We had such a lovely night at the outside bar at Yara celebrating a birthday under heat lamps and a moonlit sky. Nelson provided outstanding service. He was the only bartender and server, and wow, he did it all! His recommendations were spot on - really tasty warm trout ceviche, and the salmon ceviche was also delicious. We loved the tempura sushi and vegetable wontons. And the jalapeño cucumber cocktail and Lychee martini were great. Such a special night. We will be back!

Bindi P.

Yelp
I'm SO disappointed for giving this place 1 star. We come in and the "temp manager" states that the outside they are only explicitly is only for reservations due to staffing shortages, okay fine we sit at the bar. Both of our bartenders Michael and Nelson were absolutely wonderful, BUT I noticed something off. There were 4 parties show up WITHOUT a reservation and were seated outside on the terrace. Makes you so curious. The "temp manager" Lindsey is quite rude and judge mental. We had over a $300 bill when they were practically empty, be nice. It's not that hard

Morgan B.

Yelp
Had a great experience with Mariah, but then it took a downturn. It took an hour to get our drinks, so long we almost left and the waiter didn't care. However, the drinks were good and Mariah was fantastic for finding us a table and taking care of us. Just wish the service was consistent throughout

Pete P.

Yelp
Gave 1 star because that's the lowest option... After not being greeted by a waiter for 20 minutes we flagged down the manager to take our drink order... two of us... it took an additional 20 minutes to get the drinks (2 drinks)... for a total of 40 minutes wait time. Our waitress barely came to the table... the food runner "serviced" us more than she did. Spoke with the head manager after we finished our meal and said that was unacceptable service for a meal for 2 at $170... it wasn't just that they were busy... three tables came in to the restaurant after us and all of them had drinks and appetizers before our drinks came out. The manager made a million excuses and offered me some draft beer that was already made and sitting on the counter at the bar. If he wanted to really smooth over the situation he could've offered as the actual drink that we were drinking-- the La vid which ran us $18 bucks a pop.. (we had 4 total) ... Best thing about this spot is the view... which was amazing... and the executive chef came to every table to make sure everyone enjoyed their meals-- but the service and management were trash... AVOID IT!!!
