Queer-Owned Restaurants Are Here to Stay | Eater

"A New York dining pop-up created by DeVonn Francis that centers his identity as a Black, queer, Caribbean chef after years of feeling unable to be his full self in the restaurant world; the experience uses Caribbean-influenced flavors and community-focused hospitality to be both a personal, risk-taking statement and an inviting space for others seeking culturally specific queer belonging." - Meghan McCarron

DeVonn Francis, Chef and Founder of Yardy | Eater

"Founded by first‑generation Jamaican American chef and artist DeVonn Francis, this New York–based culinary event project blends carefully crafted, party‑forward experiences with an explicit mission to advance food sovereignty and uplift Black and Brown communities. Events are highly designed — he spends nights mood‑boarding and “vibe zhuzh‑ing” — so guests might be dancing to SZA one moment and biting into a striking dish like a broiled squid tentacle the next, but everything is framed by bigger questions about returning control of Jamaican food systems to Jamaicans. Operationally, the venture prioritizes sourcing from marginalized farmers, hiring more women and trans people, and providing livable wages and benefits for staff; its long‑term ambition is to open a food and agricultural design school envisioned as the “Noma of the West Indies.” The work is informed by his parents’ immigrant story and his mother’s old photos, which feature prominently in the project’s storytelling and help shape its focus on visibility, education, and community empowerment." - Soleil Ho

Google
The food was amazing—really authentic and full of flavor. I asked for extra sauces and the lady at the counter was super nice about it, no attitude at all (which I appreciated, lol). The only downside was the mac and cheese—it was kept in the fridge, so you would have to take it home to heat it up, which kind of defeats the purpose of grabbing takeout so I didn’t get it. Everything else was great, and I’d definitely come back again!

Google
First time I ordered and it was not what I ordered. I ordered cow foot soup and I got beef fat with carrots and I was not informed that they did not have it. So they just sent me whatever they wanted

Lizzy P.

Google
$10 dollars for a mini curry chicken two pieces of chicken no gravy no potato..be so forreal. This place gets worse and worse every time smh

Google
If I could give zero stars I would’ve. We ordered from here via Uber Eats, and the portion sizes for our oxtail plate and jerk chicken were absolutely unacceptable. I received four of the smallest oxtail pieces I’ve ever seen—literally no meat on any of them except for one. On top of the poor food quality. It felt like blatant theft of their customers’ money. We all couldn’t believe the portion size. Never again!

Google
A after having gotten several meals at this place which were tasty and fine. On several occasions I visited with my wife, and my cousin,. this is the third time I've ordered the chicken soup and as per the two previous times I specified that I would like my soup to contain other ingredients than just carrots and a few pieces of chicken. Yesterday was my last will be my last time patronizing the restaurant because, if you had advertised carrot soup on the menu then I could understand why I kept getting soup broth loaded with carrots and a few measly pieces of chicken. This I will certainly let everyone know about this place and their practices.

Google
I love the Yardie chain, but this specific one right here has good food, but horrible customer service. The girls that work behind the counter at the register are very rude and condescending. The owner needs to be a little bit more picky and who they hire because the people that work at the front are the first impression that people are gonna get of the business.. please and thank you can go along way and a smile. Specifically, a girl there that has glasses and braces is the rudest not my first bad interaction with her.

Al C.

Google
The one star is for the veggies on the side ! The oxtail which was 20 dollars might I add came like the picture below. It was extremely salty the entire thing went straight to the trash. It’s so disheartening spending your money to skip the kitchen for a the day and this is the none sense you end up with.

Google
So, I was hesitant about ordering & after seeing my food today, I see why Oprah says “listen to that little voice on the inside”. So I ordered a large chicken soup & a small callaloo & saltfish. The soup was very mediocre & the callaloo & saltfish was a sight I’ve never seen. I’ve had callaloo & saltfish countless times, but never in my life have a seen a restaurant separate the callaloo & saltfish. This is literally insane. They also gave me the container that has 3 sections & put my callaloo on one side, saltfish on the other side & the steamed dumplings on the larger side of the tray. My callaloo & saltfish that I paid for should’ve been on the larger container side. I will never order from here again & would suggest, no one else does either.

Yelp
My first time coming into this location. I just wanted rice and peas so I stopped by. The cashier very nice. I ordered rice and peas (mini size) with gravy. It was only $3.25 The rice is really good alittle spice alot of flavor.

Pamela L.

Yelp
I was feeling so sick, couldn't eat. My Jamaican father, who is 102 years, said " drink some cow foot soup" I check around the local Caribbean restaurants, no cow foot soup, and if they did have it, it was sold on a specific day. Thank you, guys, for having the heartiest food i have tasted in a long time. Two spoons of the soup and I felt resurrected! Stay the course of professionalism that clearly shows in your food presentation. As my father says, "some people keep shop, but real people keep business".

Yelp
I order fry chicken and they sent me stew chicken I'm calling the phone and no one is answering

Yelp
Mek meh tell yuh sumthin bout Yardies!!!! Love it! Food is delish. Well, let me be specific for my fellow Yelpers: Jerk Pork is the BOMB.com! Some of the best I've had. And today was no different. Also, the chicken soup is tasty, and the beef patties. In addition to great tasting food I get SERVICE WITH A SMILE‼‼ Do you know how much better food tastes with good service AND a smile?!? Let me tell u it tastes like heaven!

Yelp
The food a large oxtail with extra plaintains..the wings from next door and soup. Hubbies and I shared and now were both sick. We will never eat from here again. I'm extremely disappointed about having wasted almost 50 here at this establishment. One star because I had to...nothing good here.

Yelp
I feel like Jamaican food is an overlooked cuisine here in the US. Having spent part of my youth up in the country of Jamaica, I have to get my fix every now and then. If you love Jamaican food, you need to check this place out. Absolutely authentic and delicious! The food is fresh and delicious. I had both the curry goat and a oxtails, and both were delicious! On top of that, the staff are so friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend this establishment!

Trap E.

Yelp
They are cheap with their oxtail portions. I just purchased a meduim oxtail and I kid you not, I have THREE big pieces of oxtails with four tiny baby oxtail pieces. I understand food is expensive especially oxtail but don't raise no price and give smaller amount of meat ! & what's stupid to me. Their festival is $1.37 for one, But if you get THREE it's $3. Make it make sense. I bet if you're a man, your food will be full to the top. They pick and choose how they serve their customers.

Lisamarie C.

Yelp
The restaurant had the audacity to give us bun and cheddar cheese. CHEDDAR CHEESE I REPEAT!!!!!!! Not only that , the cheese in one half of the bun, when i called the lady she then began to argue with me. Wrong a strong and a disgrace to the Jamaican culture. Disrespectful as a matter of fact.

Yelp
I think this place has seen better days. I ordered two dozen cocktail beef and veggie patties for an office holiday function. $16.32 per dozen. Went to pick them up. Took them home then opened the boxes to find misformed patties with the insides hanging out. They don't have respect for themselves or their customers serving people this slop. I was not going to embarrass myself by taking that to work. Went back to the store and got a refund. I love to shop local and support community business, but not when you are serving this. What a disappointment.

Hassan T.

Yelp
Good dependable fresh and good service a nice touch... really like the fried dumpling with the porridge...

Andrea F.

Yelp
Great food doesn't disappoint...I'm a big fan of the stew peas great portion and taste!

Yelp
We decided to come here per the recommendation of my cousin. I sent my fiancé inside to grab a menu because our son was asleep in the car. He was inside for about 10 mins before he returned. As he is approaching the car, he is empty handed. Why?? No paper menu. After getting passed the fact there was no menu, I ordered a curry goat with white rice and veggies. He ordered a jerk chicken with rice and peas and veggies and a side order of potato salad. He said that his jerk chicken left much to be desired. There wasn't much flavor compared to some other places we've visited. The rice was ok. My curry goat was ok. It was flavorful but the meat wasn't the tender melt in your mouth consistency I'm used to. The plantains though they were yellow were not very flavorful. (I consider myself a self-proclaimed Plaintain Connoisseur.). They had that starchy taste to them. We both did agree that the steamed vegetables were good did have a sweet note to them. My Rice was over cooked though. It had the consistency of what I used to give my son when he began eating solid foods. I am an adult which means I like to feel the different textures as I eat my food. Hopefully this was a one time isolated incident. I will return to perhaps try something else on the menu.

Yelp
Great authentic Jamaican food and great service! Won't be disappointed. Small little place, easier to call in and pick up order. They have some Jamaican products available as well.

Yelp
After driving by here on numerous occasions and seeing their multiple YouTube advertisments, I've finally tried their food. Small store but the food was delicious! I walked to a greeting with a smile (*rare*) and a hello (even more *rare*). I was impressed lol jk... it was nice though. They also sell items such as authentic jerk seasoning, ackee (in the can), hard dough bread, bun and cheese and some west Indian pastries. I was planning on trying their jerk chicken (my absolute favorite and a staple Jamaican dish) but they were sold out. So, I instead ordered a small oxtail with rice and peas and cabbage for my dad and I got a mini stew chicken with cabbage for myself. All together I paid $13, not bad at all. I can't comment personally on the oxtail, as I don't eat beef, but my dad said it had a nice flavor with a slight spice to it. He enjoyed it. My stew chicken was on point! Perfect amount for one meal. Three thigh pieces seasoned perfectly and saucy with carrots, just how I like it! The sauce was a tad bit spicy but not overpowering. I liked the way they serve their steamed cabbage, its shredded thin which sort of reminded me of coleslaw. It was delicious alone but even better mixed with the stew chicken sauce. I would return to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
I purchased food from this restaurant many times but never have I ever been double crossed by them till now. I ordered fried chicken and rice and peas. I made it clear that previously when I ordered from them, I didn't get any gravy (that I ordered) with the food and it was dry! I had high hopes that this time will be different and I can enjoy my food better but only to experience the worst.... they completely SOAKED the food with gravy and oil. It's like someone is purposely taking revenge for whatever reason I don't know but I can't eat this now. How is it fair that I can't enjoy food that I'm paying you for? So much grease and oil in the food that it's a complete turn off just looking at it looks messy. I'm spending my money with you, I have a choice I could have gone some place else.... Everyone who orders online or walk in store could have gone elsewhere but we chose to come to you, I chose to come to you... the least you can do is show you appreciate that by preparing the food properly. It's 1 thing after the other, it's either the chicken is salty, the plantains are dry and over cooked so much they crack in your mouth like crackers... or they drown the food in grease. I'm never ordering here again.

Yelp
Your not going to find better Jamaican food In queens and I know my island food well ! Doesn't look like much , no sit down area and I am totally ok with that .It is banging ! Try the curry goat if you into that ! Made to perfection ! Tender no fatty pieces ! So good !

Mario M.

Yelp
The food is usually good. Not sure what happened this past Sunday afternoon. Ordered Brown stew chicken but it wasn't cooked through. Which is a mystery... How do u manage to cook and served uncooked brown stew chicken.

John M.

Yelp
This place was on my way home so I decided to stop in and give it a try. I ordered a large Curry Goat w Peas and Rice ($17.42). I was hungry so I couldn't wait to get home and try it, but when I opened the tray I was so disappointed. The tray was FULL of RICE and a few pieces of curry goat. What a RIP OFF !! I was willing to look past all this if the taste was worth it, but it WAS NOT...much salt, AVERAGE taste. Plus the rice was HARD, like it's been sitting there for a long time. I should have read the Yelp reviews about this place before going there. Serves me right :( !! This place is garbage. Do NOT spend your hard earned money here, you will regret it. Trust me !! There are a LOT of other options in Elmont, than this foul establishment !!
google avatar

Albert K.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my Jerk Chicken Meal with Rice and Beans with Steamed Cabbage. They had no porridge when I came that day :( ENTREE The cabbage was really soft and gave the meal nice texture. The rice was so warm and homey, however, the chicken, was dynamite! The flavor and seasoning just POPS in your mouth. The Jerk sauce was really good. I've never had "Sweet Sauce" but it's REALLY SWEET and it has an intense smokiness that I wasn't expecting. If you've never had it, beware, but after your palate adjusts to the sweetness, it really complements the chicken well. Definitely get ginger beer with your food! After trying both Yardies and "Jerk Hut" (on Linden Blvd), I have to say I prefer Yardies by a hair. Although, Jerk Hut DOES has a smoothie section connected to the store! Other reviewers have praised the oxtail, stew chicken, and ackee and saltfish Recommended: Jerk Chicken SMALL with Rice and Beans and Steamed Cabbage

Yelp
Curry goat roti was oily and watered down. Terrible... never again shall i order from this place

Yelp
During a snow storm, I visited this restaurant and purchased 2 large soups. I paid for the soups and left . By the time I got home (all of 6 mins from tbe restaurant ), all of 1 of my soups was spilled in the bag and all over my floor. Turns out the woman who packaged my soup did not securely place the lid on the soup I returned back to the store and spoke to a manager by the name of "Nova." After explaining what happened, Nova proceeded to call me a "liar" and accused me of "mishandling the soup." I asked her if she really thought I would go through all this trouble for a $7 soup in a snow storm?? There was no apology offered. Instead she offered me a 50% discount on another soup. I have NEVER received such POOR customer service in my life. Do yourself a favor and visit Yard Flavor which is just a little over 1 mile from this dump. The food is better and you get a decent amount. In addition, the staff is courteous and professional.
google avatar

Kashiro W.

Yelp
I'm giving place a two because it can be little confusing. It would nice if the mannerism of their customer service was more welcoming. Eye contact with the customer is also a recommendation and the pricing. I have to say I was excited because I heard they deliver. And maybe finally a Jamaican restaurant who will have something your looking for. Well they didn't have the fried dumplings so I went with something else. Food was okay fried chicken tasted a little curry. It was okay, it's open late so it's good for ppl partying n want to get some hot food.
google avatar

Shainice L.

Yelp
I went back and got the curry chicken and rice for dinner. That was pretty good, a Little too much seasoning on the curry, but it was good still. The one round plantain tasted tough and stale (even though I never knew plantain to stale) so I guess that was cooked early in the day and not fresh to order. The veggies that came with the meal I could do without. But overall, it was a good dinner. I would go back again, try something else next time.
google avatar

Colin S.

Yelp
Ordered catering for my sons bday. Fried plantain, festival and jerk chicken. My family love it a lot. We are going to order for my next sons bday next month. The girls at the front was very helpful and informative. My only problem was the line was too long that day but we were very happy the food.
google avatar

Juli-Ann H.

Yelp
Things have changed with Yardies. Food is ok now. Service is nothing to rave about. Things were better when they first opened
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Hole in the wall with 3 dining stools, take out joint. When it comes to Haitian food specifically Jamaican food I am all about oxtail baby I love sucking the bones trying to siphon out the marrow and juices and gnawing on the grizzle, there's nothing like it unfortunately it's not as fun afterwards to have to clean your fingers off especially if they don't have a washroom, but that's par for the course. This place has a good product not over the top blown away, the rice n beans was very good, cabbage on the side definitely didn't work kinda raw with no flavor. The oxtail was good but could've used more ox and tail. All the typical items including all the jerk options, patties and plantains that you would normally expect from a Jamaican establishment. The portion was large for $14 but camouflaged with rice. I don't know if I would go out of my way to come back to dine in but would order take out if I lived closer.
google avatar

Dudline P.

Yelp
Gross, curry goat was very greasy. Goat head soup lacked salt and the rice tasted burnt.
google avatar

Rashida C.

Yelp
It's not the best not is it the worst Jamaican food I've ever had... rice is mushy, oxtail in on 20 (spicy) the portion is obnoxious on how much rice I have versus how many oxtails I have... I have rice to last me a week and enough oxtail for a meal and a half provided you eat 2/3 a meal.
google avatar

Malasia B.

Yelp
I remember when yardies first opened and was one of the most authentic Jamaican spots around . You can tell they weren't so commercial because their food was seasoned and cooked just differently from most . All of their plates from mini to Large were all fulfilling and worth the price . Nowadays, I find myself dissatisfied. They are very "stingy" with the food compared to before. As if they are always about to run out or something . Then when you are willing to pay extra for more , they charge $4 for an extra scoop of ackee and saltfish. A scoop with a soup spoon . One more dollar could have just gotten me another mini . But instead of offering me the mini meal for one more dollar , I'll be paying one dollar less just for one scoop . Ackee from a can . One whole dollar for a dumpling that is done after 2 bites. Most places give you 3-4 dumplings that requires time and stomach room to finish in a mini plate. Just being realistic
google avatar

Sal And Kim S.

Yelp
I stopped in while driving down Elmont Rd., decided to grab the Oxtail, Rice & Peas. Also got the Jerk Pork. I honestly was let down. Jerk Pork was dry...I mean bordering jerky dry. Rice and Peas didn't have much flavor either. The Oxtail was tasty, it was spiced right but just a bit too greasy. For the price its a great deal. But for better flavored food...hit up Good Taste on Linden Blvd, down the block in Cambria Heights.

Paula B.

Yelp
Stale food... left overs!!! Crazy !!!spent $50 for rancid food... Macaroni salad spoiled, fried chicken burnt and dry out ... pepper shrimp smelled touch ... jerk chicken wack!!!! Wtf!!! So disappointed threw out the rest of stuff I bought then went to drink a pineapple juice I bought there ...it's expired !!! Mi Done .... NEVER again
google avatar

Stephie M.

Yelp
Friendly staff and tastey food. The portions are also very big which I love! I had ackee and saltfish and patatoe salad. I would definitely recommend it.

Rachel L.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with this lil-spot. I love this place!!! The food is excellent. Speedy service and good customer service.
google avatar

Alero B.

Yelp
Great food. They're a a tad pricey but they have juices & other Jamaican products that are often hard to find so I don't mind paying a little extra. TruJuice in the building!!! yes!!!!
google avatar

Tasha C.

Yelp
Very popular Spot it's maybe 4 other West Indian restaurants not far from here and this one seems to be the neighborhood favorite . If you can make it here early try the breakfast ! It sells out pretty fast didn't last long , I love the ackee & salt fish with bake & green banana ! So good makes me feel like I'm. All home . The food is always great and as soon as you order your not waiting to long quick service
google avatar

Ken D.

Yelp
I ordered A large oxtail dinner...the flavor was good. My problem was the portions. HUGE amount of rice and small amount of oxtail, And (literally) 3 plantain slices which they call a side dish. The prices are not too high, but they really need to increase the amount of bang for the buck.

Tina M.

Yelp
Rude/miserable staff that hung up the phone when I asked if they had the food that I wanted. You always have to call before you order online because they will take your money and not deliver the food. Disgusting place.
google avatar

Renee G.

Yelp
This is a family favourite! Everyone from grandmother to my six year old nephew looks forward to eating there. Breakfasts are delicious as is the jerk turkey (we order ours every year from there since it opened)! Great place with even better food!
google avatar

Dornell S.

Yelp
It's a hit or miss with the cooking one day you go the oxtail seasoning changes like it's jerk ox tail they need to be consistent with the chef that cooking .great bang for you buck when ordering a dish. I would recommend it for a quick takeout dinner or lunch.
google avatar

Andre R.

Yelp
Horrible customer service! After charging my card $14.50, i decided to add a slice of cake for $3.50 and was told $10 minimum...the cashier made no attempt to cancel the sale and accommodate my purchase request in addition to givibg me an attitude. I asked for a manager who obliged. If my wife didn't want that cake i would have taken my business elsewhere. I will not go back because of their POOR service and disgusting attitudes. I would not recommend this place ever!
google avatar

Joanne A.

Yelp
I ordered jerk chicken and when I arrived home it was pink/undercooked. I had to put it in the oven but it was just tasteless. I will never return, many better options in the area.
google avatar

Jonathan G.

Yelp
We ordered catering from them for our Thanksgiving work lunch and they quoted us $151 for pickup at 12:30 PM. I arrived at 12:45 PM and it still wasn't ready. I go to pay and she says $153. We went back and forth, even though we're down the street (like, I would've brought it later) over the $2 on a $150 order, so finally I just used my credit card. They had no boxes or bags to put the trays in, so sauce got all over my car, nor did they help me load my car. How do you advertise for catering and not have boxes or bags to put the trays in?!? The food was decent (even though it was cold), but I didn't enjoy it, because I was so mad at the terrible service. My coworkers and I all agreed that we will not be ordering for events from them anymore.

Karlene H.

Yelp
Went to Yardies on Friday and there was only 3 ppl in there including me. One of the customer was checking out and another placed her order and was waiting to pay for her food. I asked the guy behind the register can i order because he was just standing there and there were 2 young ladies working(bagging food) he said as soon as the lady in front of me pays. Then he proceeds to take a phone call and was running the entire menu off to the person. Needless to say i walked out. I do not find them to be friendly or professional. I should have asked for the manager. This is the 3rd time i have gone there and i will never go back. There are several other Jamaican restaurants i can go to.
google avatar

Nelva W.

Yelp
I recently moved to Long Island and now got around to trying this spot since I pass it every day. The woman behind the counter never smiled or even looked me in the eyes. She simply looked up and said "yes", with a bit of an attitude. I asked how much the jerk chicken only was and she sighed and then told me $4.50 for a leg quarter. I placed my order and paid for it and said thank you and she just looked to the next customer, like I didn't say anything. I have not been back since. The chicken was OK, i can do better myself, it was nothing to write a good review about.

Yelp
The truth! I was skeptical to go here because the last review posted was over 8 months ago but I needed oxtail! I ordered oxtail and an esco snapper. The oxtail was just what I wanted, tender, full of flavor and authentic. Exactly what I was craving for! Not at all disappointed. The rice and peas was also real tasty! The seafood here is made to order and thats a + for me, It was only a 12 minute wait that was worth it! The fish was well cleaned and very well seasoned. They have managed to have me hooked! Great food and great customer service! No complaints at all!

L C.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, stingy with the food, rude employees!!! And the food isn't great either

Marjy G.

Yelp
I've been here before but only for a veggie patty. I didn't know they had veggie soy chunks until I read Melba's review above. I bought the stewed chunks and it came with red beans and rice, veggies and plantains. They gave me a large portion which I shared with my mom and she loved it. we are both fans!
