Where to Find the Best Water Ice in Philly | Eater Philly

"Farther afield from Philly, the tiny Yardley Ice House is nonetheless a popular destination for city residents. An ice-cold treat in a variety of rotating flavors — like banana cream pie, cherry Bordeaux, and peach mango — is worth the 45-minute drive. You’ll find similar satisfaction another 15 minutes west of here, at sibling Newtown Ice House." - Dayna Evans

I’m confused about this place. Maybe the girl was new but she said there has never ever been ice cream ever sold. But I look at the pictures and the 23 other reviews about the soft serve and I see ice cream. I didn’t even know that the flavors on the wall were water ice and that’s not anyone else fault. I didn’t know where I was. I got the peanut butter cup ice and it was alright. I think I rather have polish water ice. But that’s just my opinion. My friend got some blizzard type jawn and I thought that was a lot better so maybe I just got the wrong thing. I did ask if there were any ice cream places around and she said she didn’t know. That’s fine too. There is one single bench outside. I’ve never been there so I don’t know if they put more places to sit when it’s the summer. That’s really all. I don’t need to go back. They do have pup cups for your pup.

This is a little ice cream joint tucked behind Mil-Lee’s Diner. Although it’s not on the main street, people know it’s there because there was a line when we arrived. The people behind the counter kept the line moving. We had orange cream water ice with vanilla soft serve on top. It was creamy and delicious. Worth the wait in line!! They only take cash.

CASH ONLY. The staff is very sweet & patient despite the very busy crowd pouring into the small shop. The hardest part is deciding which flavor of water ice to pick; there are too many unique and delicious flavors but the sweet girls let you sample the flavors first. I do not like soft serve but I was incredibly impressed with the quality snd richness of the soft serve here. They offer a size small which is very cute and convenient so I was able to get two different flavors.

Google
Unique water ice flavors are executed to perfection! The cannoli and the salted caramel flavors are especially delicious in a gelati. I visited from Philadelphia and this is the best water ice I've had in the greater Philadelphia area!

Google
Highly recommend for the water ice, but not sure what's going on with the soft serve cones. Just went there and paid $15 for the two tiniest cones ever. We had toppings, but ouch! And the chocolate dip was somehow very thin. When asked about why so small was told this is how it's always been, and they actually weigh to be sure. I was watching and no weighing happened. I've been going here over 25 years and the cones were always generous. I don't mind paying for a good product, just make it worthwhile and don't make it seem like it's me! Go somewhere else if you want a cone of soft serve.

Google
My cup of “water ice” was all water and food coloring. It’s thick like syrup. No ice at all, it’s beyond me why the staff would serve that and charge someone for it. $16 for a small water ice that had to be thrown away and 2 cones, one of which fell off the cone because it was so lopsided. The ice cream is not custard, it was whipped with so much air, there is not creamy thickness you normally get with custard. We’ve been coming for years , but this time was too much and we won’t be back.

Google
This is the only place that I’ll go the extra mile to get my water ice fix. I have been coming with friends and family for over 20 years, it is The Best handcrafted Water Ice; always innovative and fun. Without a doubt, you will find something new that will be your next favorite.

Google
This is an amazing place. The lines are long for a reason. The ice is lovely after a hot day. It’s also in a very nice location. WORTH IT!!!!

Yelp
Loved the iced cream. Creamy and delicious. Quaint little place and with outside seating.

Yelp
We have been coming to Yardley Ice House for nearly 30 years. I think the sizes have gotten even smaller...if that's possible. $4 for a small ice; it can't be more than 3ozs. Crazy. And they rarely have lemon water ice on the menu - which should be a basic staple. It's just become disappointing. Our last visit was today. Other options to explore and enjoy.

Yelp
Rita's who?? I have never been able to find any water ice that comes close to the Yardley Ice House! I finally got a chance to go for the first time this summer and it was incredible as always!! They have tons of fun new flavors including Cookie Monster, Mudslide, and Shirley temple and their regular soft serve is pretty good too. The staff is always super nice and the place is a cute little hole in the wall- I will forever be a yardley ice house stan

Yelp
Posted hours don't match their own website or other online sources, and they don't even follow the hours on their ratty sign.

Yelp
Literally the absolute best. Grew up going here. I wish both locations took card but that's such a non issue!

Yelp
It's heavy nostalgia for me, I grew up in Yardley and always loved Yardley Ice House. Their water ice is soooooo much better than any chain (looking at you Ritas). They have great flavors, all using real fruit. The price is perfect and nothing here is over priced, it's all worth it. I wish they had one where I live now, cause I miss real water ice. I follow them on insta and it always makes me want more. Whenever I'm here in the summer I will always stop in. They are cash only, so be aware.

Yelp
I grew up riding my bike with friends and 8 quarters to the ice house every weekend. While it is the norm for prices to increase and I do believe that they are trying to keep them reasonable, ever since the new owners took over the quality has gone down. I would check almost every day for the new "featured" flavors but they aren't as exciting anymore. I still enjoy going every now and then but don't find it as good as it used to be.

Yelp
Great spot for water ice and ice cream. There is usually a line but it moves quickly. The help is friendly and efficient. I enjoyed the mint choc chip ice this time but also love the mango! Definitely worth a try!!

Yelp
I came here from a recommendation from a friend who said it's better than Rita's. They do have some cool flavors here but it's cash only! I was expecting a lot but honestly it disappointed. I got the cherry bourdeaux with chocolate soft serve gelati. The soft serve was comparable to Rita's. The water ice flavor felt dull and there were just chunks of ice in there (not smooth). I will say the pieces of Cherry were great in there but I think I will stick with Rita's.

Yelp
There was a day the Yardley Ice House produced the best Water ices around!! Don't know what they are making now but it is not Water Ice! It seems Yardley Ice House has changed from making Water Ice to now making something analogous to ice cream (or maybe sherbert)? The new assortment of flavors of what they are passing off as Water Ices seem to have a creamy base and do not have the texture or taste of true water Ice. For over 20 years we could count on you serving Chocolate-chocolate chip... but 3 times in the last 2 weeks you didn't even have that flavor! Very disappointed and sad with the direction the new owners have taken this place! Service is still good. Ambiance as expected!

Yelp
My go-to local ice cream / water ice shop after a walk on Main St. or the canal. Not only do I love to support local businesses but I also love soft serve and their wide range of water ice flavors. I've never had a creamy water ice before, I've tried the CAPPUCCINO and it tasted just like ice cream but lighter! I've also had the MANGO which is a classic flavor. The ice cream is creamy and yummy, you can't really go wrong with soft serve. The prices are a bit high for the portion but I personally can't finish too much ice cream/water ice so it works out for me but not my wallet. The service is pretty friendly but average for an ice cream stand. Since it's the only local ice cream place, I'll be returning for more cones and to try different water ice flavors.

JoAnn B.

Yelp
Just the best place. We buy by the quart and try to make it last through the winter.

Yvonne S.

Yelp
I went to Yardley ice waited for 55 minutes on line and I do not exaggerate when I say this --I ordered a small gelati with sprinkles. The young girl said it was $5.50. I only had five dollars. I didn't think it would be more than $4.5 I recall paying $4.50 in the past , but that's not a big deal $5.50 is reasonable but I was short $.50. I only had a five dollar bill, so I proceeded to say maybe I can come back with the $.50 ? She stared at me and I had to hand her back the icecream! I walked out without the gelati after I waited for nearly an hour -- insane! Honestly, she should have said no problem you can bring back the $.50 another time she never did? She just took the gelati right back and I'm sure she dumped it, unbelievable! Maybe bad training of staff, no common sense?

Yelp
I've been to this cute local shop a few times in the past few years. I came in with friends a few weeks ago when it opened for the season. This local shop served an awesome variety of water ice flavors as well as soft serve and custard options. I am personally not a water ice fan, so I went for a custard. I ordered a Sprinkle-Dipped Cone, and a small cost me about 2.40. The employees are all very friendly, and I find that they make extra effort to provide good customer service since they're a family-owned business. My friends and I all really enjoyed our ice cream. The taste is very fresh, and water ice variety is great. For the custard, flavors are simple. You can order chocolate, vanilla, or twist. You can also get cones dipped in various coatings and toppings. Overall, I really recommend this place. It's a cute, high-quality local ice cream shop. My only critique is that I wish they had more seating around the shop.

Connor H.

Yelp
This is honestly one of the best ice cream places I've ever tried. I would definitely recommend the water ice, but soft serve is good there too! The service is always nice, for the times I've been at Yardley Ice House. I feel like they could do a little better making Yardley Ice House look better, but that's not what I really care about. I mostly care about the taste of the ice cream at Yardley Ice House. 5 star review

Joey R.

Yelp
What a tragedy! I had previously rated this business a 5 star place and it was a once a place that was filled with joyful memories. Recently, however, those fun memories have been clouded by bad experiences. The forever friendly mascot, Keith, had been treated in a manner that he "chose not to return". The ice quality has declined especially in the classics flavors. I'd love this place if it returned to the way it was, but until then, this is a business that ruined a good thing because of budget cuts and employee treatment.

Yelp
Opening Day at the Ice House is akin to a holiday in my house. I drive 45 minutes just to get my hands on some sweet Irish Coffee or Guinness ice after a long winter suffering through the water ice drought. Sure, Rita's is closer and ubiquitous, but I'd drive anywhere for Ice House treats. I will rhapsodize to anyone who will listen about their variety of flavors. They're always trying new and different things, like their sweet and salty blue ice, Red Velvet Chip and Krimpet. Of course, they have fruit flavors too, made with real fruit. Oh, and when I say real fruit, I don't mean those little diced up bits of maraschino cherries, I mean things like real chunks of cherry that fill up every spoonful. They don't skimp on the mix ins. Oh! And their cookie dough series even feature homemade dough. What more could you ask for? Usual disclaimers apply, it's cash only, there's no indoor seating, when the inside is open, it's tiny, but during Covid they've set up a table outside to keep everyone safe. I'll keep making the drive as long as they keep making delicious ice. I'll also keep working on my campaign to get them to build a Horsham Ice House.

Yelp
My favorite place to get water ice ! In the summer we Cosme here Atleast once a week. It is so fresh and love that they have a variety of flavors. I wish it was open all year but we did stock up on quarts !

Yelp
SO GOOD! First of all Yardley is such a cute town. This spot has a good variety of water ice flavors and they all sound delicious. I went with a mango gelati and my fiancé got a cookies and cream water ice. I was definitely questioning cookies and cream as water ice but it was sooooo good I had to steal some from him. The frozen custard is perfection and the water ice is full of flavor. Will definitely be back to try more.

Matthew L.

Yelp
Their pumpkin water ice is amazing! They use real pumpkin in it and it tastes like pumpkin pie. Definitely check it out before they close for the winter!
google avatar

Yelp
Best Water Ice ever!! Will probably never look at Rita's the same. They have a wonderful and unique selection of flavors and very very friendly staff.
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
Popular spot, try the peanut butter ice, very generous portions. Probably should have had a small...

lorraine g.

Yelp
The best water ice!! Highly recommend. Better than anything I get in Philly. I love the orange creamsicle and chocolate chocolate chip

Jackie M.

Yelp
I grew up with yardley ice house, it was my favorite place to go. After the new ownership the whole place has been ruined. The flavors don't taste the same. The employees wear black tee shirts that say ice house instead of the cute colorful shirts that say yardley ice house. They even changed the cute wooden flavor sign with a dark magnet board. Nothing about this place has its charm anymore it makes me so sad
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
Its ok. Wish there were more ice cream varieties but for ice choices they're good. Prices not too high

Jen M.

Yelp
Love the fact that all their ices are made in house with fresh ingredients! They are all so good - makes it hard to pick one or two flavors each time!
google avatar

Marlyn V.

Yelp
So apparently don't get ice cream at the ice house, because you will be highly disappointed. I had super high expectations for this place merely based on the fact that they had almost a perfect yelp star rating. Then we got here and the line was down the block and that made me even MORE excited! After about 15 minutes of waiting in line, and seeing various people leave with good looking cones, I decided on ice cream instead of Italian ice. I ordered a simple vanilla hot fudge sundae with peanuts. Let's just say the peanuts were the best part....the fudge wasn't thick and chocolatey, but instead cheap tasting and the ice cream was so bland that it reminded me of a more solid version of Cool Whip. My beau got a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate was equally disappointed, and this man never says no to ice cream. If I return I will be sure to stick to the local's favorite of ONLY water ice....definitely go to McDonald's for a cheaper and more delicious sundae.

Jean N.

Yelp
2023 Update: Delicious as usual, but the cone size shrunk and the price skyrocketed. A little disappointing.

Melissa H.

Yelp
The new owners are great and making many improvements. We especially like the unique flavors and high quality product. We appreciate the options of gluten free and dairy free treats! There are always new flavors to try, so it makes each visit special.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The real deal, I don't know if they make their own ice. But it reminds me of when Rita's was a small shop in PA, and not a giant tasteless organization. Anyway, they truly put real fruit and flavor into their ice and it's shows.
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
Located in back parking lot Very big parking lot Friendly staff No credit cards, only cash Small shop, no table to sit inside
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
This place has a huge following around the area, and man, does it show when it gets hot. We stopped in on Saturday when it was like 100 degrees outside, and they had at least 25 people waiting on line, and a good 25 or so outside sitting on benches and the floor eating their stuff. Pandemonium (for a suburban ices place at least). Anyway, we got the Cherry Bordeaux with frozen custard on top (which I think they call a gelati) and it was very good. The Bordeaux cherry halves in the ices were a nice touch and the custard was smooth and delicious. I actually haven't had real frozen custard in forever, so the taste really takes me back. They have heaps of other flavors and offerings too if gelati isn't your thing, so definitely stop in and give the place a try if you get a chance! Their stuff is far better than the ice cream you usually find.

Yelp
Finally made it to Yardley Ice House, the back parking lot converted shed that puts out some excellent Italian Ices. It sits behind Mil-Lee's Luv - In Diner off Main Street, Yardley, Pa. You have to drive down the adjoining driveway to find it. First impression upon parking, Oy. what a dismal place for an ice cream parlor. That is soon forgotten upon walking inside. The space is cute, in a claustrophobic way, but the folks are friendly and patient describing their options. The Bordeaux Cherry/Vanilla Custard Gelato I had was quite good. The ice was Black Cherry red with plenty of cherry chunks mixed in. The taste was cold and true. The Custard was even better. Stand up curl. Great creamy texture. Just the right vanilla flavor. Very close in substance to Kohr's at the shore. Nothing wrong with that. The regular ice cream was not sampled, but I was very satisfied with this Gelato. The question of the hour seems to be whether it compares favorably with Rita's? To my buds, they are very close. You can't go wrong with either selection, so it comes down to secondary preferences. Do you mind consuming from franchises over stand alone family businesses? Do plastic cups rank over paper containers? Does your loyalty flow toward Pennsbury or Council Rock or Morrisville? All important inquiries in the decision to choose your cool desserts. But, I'll let you decide. I'll take you anywhere you want to go.
google avatar

Ameena S.

Yelp
Love this spot! Yardley is a pretty quiet town with not much going on, but I always tell people that this is one of the two best places in town. Every flavor of water ice I've had has been good, and their custard is incredible. The only thing I don't LOVE this that they're still cash only (even thru COVID) so just make sure you account for that. Their prices are pretty reasonable overall. This place blows Rita's out of the water.
google avatar

Erik F.

Yelp
Always good. The fruit flavors all have real fruit and if it has pie in the name there will be actual pie in the ice.

Mary B.

Yelp
Don't expect ice cream, it's custard. Chocolate, vanilla and twist said the server with attitude. My husband loves water ice, not me, so he ordered his favorite flavor. He said Rita's was better. They also serve the water ice in a plastic cup you see at kid's birthday parties! I don't get the draw to this place? It's a shack in a parking lot, no tables just a few benches.
google avatar

Veronica K.

Yelp
I gotta be honest, with all the five star reviews I was expecting something that would blow my mind. My mind was not blown; however my taste buds were pleased. I had a banana cream pie water ice (cream ice?) and it was decent. It was very airy and light, nowhere near as dense as an Italian ice or even a typical water ice. This was a bit unusual for texture and took me by surprise, but it wasn't bad. The flavor was spot on. My boyfriend got a cherry Bordeaux and I snagged a taste, and it was very rich in flavor. I should point out the consistency of it was much more similar to other water ices (similar to what you'd find at Rita's). The price and portions were right, and I can see why locals love it. That being said, I don't know if I'd go out of my way to go here again, but when in the area this is a great place to stop by.

Yelp
My girlfriend grew up in Yardley and swore by the Ice House. The first time we ate there I didn't enjoy it whatsoever, I was so disappointed in her taste of ice cream. But she drug me back when I started work in Yardley and I'm glad she did. I've enjoyed it ever since their ice cream and water ice. I frequently get my ice cream dipped there which is a nice change up that a lot of places don't do. My only warning is on a nice summer night the wait for the Ice House can be quite long but it is worth it to for their ice cream on a hot summer night.

Nicole D.

Yelp
So delicious! New flavors daily that don't taste artificial. Best custard around also!
google avatar

Mallory A.

Yelp
Simply the besttttt water ice or custard you will ever have ! Spoiler alert, once you eat at the ice House , you won't ever be able to eat Rita's after... Yardley ice is just leagues above !!!
google avatar

Adrian W.

Yelp
No words except... DELICIOUS! The Yardley ice house's gelattis are absolutely amazing!

Marianne J.

Yelp
So many choices ! A fabulous place for that cold sweet treat anytime of the day. Even if there is a long line - it's worth the wait !
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
A fantastic local water ice location! I'm usually a big Rita's fan when it comes to Italian ice but this place meets and beats!
google avatar

Kait V.

Yelp
Yardley Ice House makes the best water ice, way better than other local chains. My favorite flavors include mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, and banana cream pie. I love getting them on their own or with custard in a gelato. I enjoy trying the variety of flavors as it seems there are always new ones. The only downside is that it's cash only and there sometimes can be a long line in the summer, but in my opinion it's totally worth it!
google avatar

Cassandra P.

Yelp
This is my favorite dessert place. I have not had one bad thing here. All of the ice is so delicious and it's very creamy...in my opinion way better than Ritas. The custard is wonderful!
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
This place is cash only!! There's a bank with an ATM down the street, but it is cash only. The place is so quaint and definitely a local gem. It's hidden in the back parking lot off the street, definitely don't see it driving by. They have soft serve and Italian ice. I opted for the soft serve but will be returning for a gelato soon.

Tracy T.

Yelp
This is only our 2nd time here. But it is amazing. Everytime the line is long. That should speak for itself how good it is. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed. My suggestion Is I wish they did what Rita's water ice does. Water ice and custard make a misti shake to drink.
