Yari Club: A Modern Take on Traditional Yakitori
Yari Club, a newcomer to London’s vibrant food scene, offers a contemporary twist on the classic Japanese street food, Yakitori. Located near the iconic Dominion Theatre, Leicester Square tube station (Piccadilly & Northern Lines), and a plethora of lively pubs, this restaurant provides a convenient dining option for theatre-goers and night owls alike.
Yakitori, a culinary art form originating in Japan, involves grilling small pieces of meat, primarily chicken, on skewers over charcoal. While Yari Club offers a modern take on this tradition, it’s important to note that the absence of Binchotan charcoal, a type of white charcoal prized for its high heat and purity, slightly diminishes the authentic Japanese experience. Some skewers are even cooked using robotic rotation, further departing from the traditional method.
Despite these modern techniques, Yari Club still delivers some impressive skewers. The Chicken Karaage, a crispy and juicy fried chicken dish, is a standout, especially when paired with their in-house spicy sauce. The Classic Negima, a skewer of chicken and leek, and the Tsunke and Prawn Tempura offer a satisfying balance of flavors and textures. The Corn Ball, a unique and addictive side dish, is also worth trying. However, the grilled broccoli with Nori dressing, while visually appealing, is somewhat underwhelming, with a subtle balsamic vinegar note that may not appeal to all palates.
For those seeking a more substantial meal, the Bento box is an excellent choice. It offers a generous selection of six skewers, along with white rice, coleslaw, Yuzu Pickles, Nori, and Yari sauce.
While the menu is relatively small and straightforward, it would be nice to see some additional options added in the future. The toilet facilities are located downstairs, are clean and well-maintained.
It’s worth noting that Yari Club has only been open for three weeks, with a soft launch period from the 11th to 18th of October. This recent opening explains any potential teething issues and provides an opportunity for the restaurant to refine its offerings.
The friendly and efficient service complements the dining experience. And pairing your skewers with a refreshing Sapporo Black beer is a classic combination.
In a city dominated by fast-food chains and generic eateries, Yari Club is a refreshing addition to London’s culinary landscape. It offers a taste of Japan, albeit with a modern twist, and is well worth a visit for those seeking a unique and delicious dining experience that will make come and visit again. As prices are very reasonable.
