7 Best Ice Cream and Gelato Shops in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Since 1972, Ye Ole Fashioned has added six locations to the Lowcountry. The restaurants are famous for BLTs and banana splits — what’s not to love? Go for a scoop of the 36 flavors or a shake." - Erin Perkins

Such a great place to eat! We went to the West Ashley location on Savannah Hwy. Friendly staff! Food is lovely! We had wings, the super burger, and a philly. My philly did come out wrong, but was corrected immediately. We’ve also had the banana split and Reese’s sundae. So so good! Recommend 10/10!

If you’re looking for truly delicious sandwiches in Charleston, I highly recommend this spot. I ended up here on a friend’s recommendation, who insisted these are the best sandwiches in West Ashley. I ordered the Philly sandwich — the portions are huge, they don’t skimp on the meat, and everything is cooked on the grill. It’s best to eat here while the sandwich is hot to catch all the flavors and nuances. The prices are surprisingly reasonable — for Charleston, it’s rare to find this quality and size for the cost. Highly recommend. These sandwiches made an impression, and I’ll definitely be back when I get the chance.

Google
Amazing amazing amazing! The service was outstanding. I did not have to wait long. Everyone was so nice. The food portions are astronomical enough to eat for several people from one order. I would highly recommend stopping here to eat. The food was amazing so fresh and yummy.

Tons of vegan options! From ice cream to cheeseburgers! Super friendly service. Cozy, nostalgic space.

Google
The service is quick and everyone is so kind and so patient, even when there's a lot of people in the shop during the summer! In my opinion, the ice cream is very creamy (even the rainbow sherbet!), so if you like creamy ice cream, this is the spot! I got the strawberry cheesecake and I think the banana pudding. Both very good options for fruit ice cream lovers! The location is pretty convenient. If you're just coming back from downtown or even the beach, this is easily on the way to north charleston!

Google
I ordered and enjoyed an tasting well portioned double bacon cheeseburger with fries followed by a cup x2 scoops of caramel salt ice cream! Yes definitely going back! Yummy if you haven't eaten here you're missing out on a Charleston Staple!

I spent over $100 on my order for them to leave food out of the bag. When I called they denied this. And told me to go through door dash. They wouldn’t do anything to help me. Now my daughter doesn’t have her meal. If you’re ordering from this place you should go in person and check your own bag. They don’t own their mistakes. (UPDATE: the restaurant responded to this post that they checked surveillance video and saw the food placed in the bag… 1) This sounds untruthful… who would go through that much trouble for a chicken sandwich… why not just replace it? Greed. 2) My food was sealed with a DoorDash strap when arrived. The restaurant is blaming their mistake on the dasher, who did a great job. SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOR FOR A BUSINESS OWNER. I only care at this point because the behavior is so toxic and shameful that it needs to be said aloud. And I’m done.

This place is amazing! I had the tuna melt on wheat with provolone cheese that came with a nice portion of good potato salad and scoops of ice cream. My favorite being cookies and cream; which I gladly ate on the road to cool me off due to the heat. This will be the first of many stops to this location at 474 Savannah Highway. The service was excellent and my food was ready within minutes. My son had the cheeseburger and fries. Talk about the huge basket of fries! I ended up grabbing more than a few off of his plate. I left there smiling from ear to ear over the experience. I definitely recommend this spot with so many options to choose from!

Yelp
First off sweet treat is always necessary so of course we go to ye ole fashion for one. It's so dependable and easy with the drive through. Last night, I need a good ole sweet treat (not a big one just a little something) got in the car and drove there, I love the drive through especially at night when I can still be in my pjs and not care. I am a sucker for their pecan praline ice cream. The Perfect sweet treat in my eyes. I asked for a small cone and they delivered they over delivered. I got a big cup with a cone sitting on top. They did ask for my approval but I was so surprised. Yum perfect night cap. Beware of a wait though, they get very busy and don't always have a lot of people working so be patient but know it is all worth it in the end. The inside is like a little diner, very southern and cute. But I'm a drive through type gal so bonus points for that.

Yelp
This is a childhood memory.. although when I doordashed from here my friend had gotten a burger and I forgot what I had but when she ate it she ended up getting food poisoning from them not cooking her burger enough and she threw up everywhere and had to go to the emergency room... great ice cream though. Also ever since the original owner sadly passed away and passed the company down to his son,the food hasn't been as good, and he is trying to turn many items vegan. I most likely won't come as often.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and shakes. Banana pudding, Michigan Pothole and Cherry Amaretto all great, with large portions.

Scotty C.

Yelp
I've been to their other locations plenty of times, but never this one until recently. I was having my car detailed next door so I walked over to grab a sandwich. I was planning on dining in, but it was peak lunchtime and the wait was pretty long so I ended up doing to go. I waited in line for a bit and they seemed a little disorganized, but they got it back on track by the time I left. If you can avoid the lunch rush I would recommend it. I had the fried chicken sandwich with bacon (an old favorite) and some fries. I got my order, picked up my car and took it home and it was still delicious. I didn't realize they had a drive thru which is good to know and the service seemed to be going faster over there too.

Yelp
Well, this definitely isn't the kind of ice cream shop you go to for non-dairy options; although, they do exist! It's not really a challenge these days to make non-dairy options so I'm not sure why most places just don't do it. I stopped in here for my son and of course when we walked up, he wanted the Cookie Monster ice cream but was relegated to the only non-dairy option, cookies & cream. I was disappointed to see that it was also $1 more than every other option, which in reality, it's probably cheaper to make. The ice cream itself also was not very tasty, it was one of those icy type non-dairy options. Meh. I can honestly say that I won't be recommending this spot to my fellow vegans, not only for the lack of options and the upcharge, but man, this place was pretty dirty and the staff was very unfriendly. It took me standing at the ice cream for a good amount of time then finally asking for some help to get any attention at all. The floors were sticky and corners looked like a raggedy old mop had been over them way too many times. I'll definitely be going to a different ice cream shop on my next visit.

Yelp
Oh, my gracious! Allow me to regale you with my enchanting experience at Ye Old Fashioned Cafe & Ice Cream in the heart of charming Charleston, South Carolina! My dear, I simply cannot contain my delight after indulging in their divine Super Special Sundae. Upon my first delicate spoonful, I was transported to dessert heaven! The ice cream, as smooth as a southern breeze, danced upon my taste buds with its rich, creamy texture. The toppings, fresh as a morning bloom, added a burst of flavors that left me positively swooning. Each component was orchestrated with the utmost care, creating a symphony of sweetness that resonated in my soul. The ambiance of this delightful establishment is as warm and inviting as a gracious southern hostess. The staff, with their genteel manners and genuine smiles, made me feel as welcome as a magnolia in May. It's abundantly clear that their passion for confectionery artistry is as boundless as the southern hospitality that graces this fine city. In the grand tapestry of Charleston's culinary delights, Ye Old Fashioned Cafe & Ice Cream shines like a rare gem. To all you discerning folks seeking a taste of true southern indulgence, I implore you to visit this heavenly haven. Five stars, my darlings, for an experience that will linger in your heart like a sweet southern serenade!

Yelp
My family in Charleston visits this place often. While visiting them this month, I decided to order pistachio ice cream shake, which was pretty good! They also serve hot foods. I love the fact that there is a very large variety of custom shakes which you can order. They also have a family size, banana split, and everything one would get at an ice cream shop. The staff is friendly and efficient, and the establishment is clean. I would recommend bringing your family here whenever you are in the mood for going out for dessert.

Yelp
We were looking for something cold to cool us off on such a hot day and we weren't disappointed. Such a cute local food and ice cream shop. We didn't get any food so I cannot speak to that but there were plenty of people coming in to pick up there orders and the food looked appetizing. There were quite a few ice cream flavors but although they advertise yogurt they didn't have any when I visited. The staff provided good service but wasn't overly friendly I definitely would come back again and I think next time is will have to try their food.

Yelp
Old school!!! & we would know. How marvelous that this even exists in 2023!!! Do visit and bring your very best of friends!!! Often as you can.....
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
Used to be consistently great but was terrible today. Wait for the food was longer than usual (and I don't mean a line... there was no one ahead of me in the drive through). The double bacon cheese burger was baconless. The portion of fries was half of the usual size. The BLT was also smaller than usual.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Terrific ice cream! Huge portions even for a single scoop. A bit over priced but nice people behind The counter.
google avatar

Matthew T.

Yelp
Of the two Ye Ole Fashioned locations in West Ashley, visit this one. The vibe is better. It feels longtime and local. The ice cream is excellent, smooth, creamy and full of mix-ins. And service is prompt!
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
Delicious old fashioned ice cream! I ordered a pint to go and you can select up to four flavors. Though this was a pint, it was fully packed with a good amount of ice cream! I ordered the following flavors: buttered pecan, strawberry, salted caramel and coffee. Hands down the buttered pecan was my favorite. Plenty of parking out front and the place has seating inside.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Love that they have a drive through! I always go for the ice cream (they have over 25 flavors!) but they also offer food if you're in the mood for something more savory - and everything can be ordered at the drive thru if wanted! The servings are large and you definitely get your moneys worth! It's definitely a busy space and can sometimes feel overwhelming, but if you want to stay they have indoor and outdoor sitting available
google avatar

Drew Y.

Yelp
This place is good. Kinda over priced but it's good to come on occasion. the menu is big so there's a lot to choose from and it's all really good.

Elona X.

Yelp
Best home made ice cream! They have a lot of flavors to choose from and the scoops are pretty big..

Yelp
Went for a summer treat and got "small" ice cream cone. It must have been over a pint of ice cream . It was great Ice cream, great value and great service. It certainly did not disappoint! I got the Java chunk- yum!

Yelp
First day in Charleston and after an hour of perusing the plethora of eateries here, we decided on a local tried-n-true. So my wife and I and our two daughters were off on our Charleston adventure. We got there shortly after 5 on. We didn't eat lunch and didn't want to wait later for dinner. Their menu is mostly hand-held and finger food fare. Their specialty is obviously hamburgers so we all ordered one, I ordered the everything burger and the ladies ordered cheeseburgers. I also ordered a 6-inch everything hotdog. Girls ordered an order of fries and an order of tater tots. NOTE: ONE ORDER OF FRIES OR TOTS IS ENOUGH TO FEED FOUR PEOPLE. BE AWARE OF THIS. IM NOT KIDDING LOL. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The people behind the counter were friendly and helpful. The physical plant was clean with plenty of seating. There were about 12 people behind the counter so I imagine this place gets crazy during dinner service between burgers and ice cream. The burgers looked hand-formed and were cooked to order. No Luke-warm burgers here. They were DELICIOUS! Would definitely order again. NOTE: the burgers were well constructed. By that I mean the ingredients were assembled in a way that stayed out on the bun when you bit into them. They didn't go shooting out all over the place. The girls got two fountain drinks and one bottle of water. The hotdog not so much. The dog in a bun was absolutely flooded with so many topping, you had a hard time enjoying it because everything muddied together into a MEH kind of slop. Definitely a bust for me. 1 out of 5 and a no-go for ever trying again. The fries were crinkle cut and fries crisp. The tots were golden brown and crisp as well. Excellent. They also have an extensive ice cream section but after our meals, there was no way we had room. We will hit the ice cream section another day. It's not a cheap eats though. With tax, our bill came to $58 for four people. But it is Charleston, not my beloved Mocksville. All in all it was a good experiences, save the hotdog.

Yelp
Came in here because I wanted some ice cream and I picked the right place. I really wanted rainbow sherbet, but I still wanted to try a couple others. They were all great. I will keep this place in mind for ice cream in the future! Everyone was very friendly and I appreciate the old timey vibe.
google avatar

Raquel C.

Yelp
The absolute best service and the ice cream is awesome as well. They give you a kit on the waffle cone and a tremendous amount of everything on the banana split.
google avatar

MikeandStacy V.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream served in huge portions. We had great service. Really smooth, creamy, slightly soft hand-dipped ice cream. The biilding/location leaves something to be desired. We ate in our car. Inside was crowded and outside smelled of sewage. We'd go back but would try a different location.
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
Amazing feel good --food, service and makes me feel like I'm in my hometown when I'm not. Generous portions of ice cream. Had the hot fudge sundae and a small portion of Amaretto Cherry. See? Loved it so much after watching the sandwiches & cheese fries fly out their convenient drive thru window, we are back for breakfast having the monster club BLT with a fried egg....cannot stay away when you find something good! Shout out to Cheryl!

Janine H.

Yelp
We are regular customers. We placed an online order for pickup and didn't realize till we got home that one meal was missing and an ice cream order was incorrect. We called. They immediately delivered the missing food. Thanks so much!

Alexis L.

Yelp
I found a spider in my salad and was offered a sundae. A SPIDER. A SPIDER WAS IN MY SALAD. A sundae for a spider. Let that sink in.
google avatar

Phillip M.

Yelp
The price of ice cream should have a loan process. I enjoy this business, just not so much this location since it doesnt have my favorite ice cream. The family is happy, so I am good, but 28 plus a tip for 5 cones of ice cream is amazing.

Kelly L.

Yelp
My recent drive-thru visit to Ye Ol' Fashion was nothing short of infuriating. We ordered a simple combo of tenders and fries, but it took a mind-boggling 40 minutes to get our food. This wait time was completely unacceptable for fast food, and there was no explanation or compensation for the delay. Extremely disappointed.

Guldana K.

Yelp
Last night I was at Ye Ole Fashioned. It was so nice and peaceful. Got my chicken sandwich and some ice cream for me and my husband. Thank you guys! We definitely come back. You got everything the preagnant woman is craving

Jaida Ly'Shelle M.

Yelp
I recently went to this location as i have been to various & this by far is the WORST. I went there Tuesday of feb. 6th 2024 the service was terrible i don't usually leave reviews but im disappointed. The staff was rude as soon as my order was taken i over heard the employee say " that bitch took forever with her order. There was employees eating out of the food with their bare hands . I was very disappointed to say the least . Maybe some new management would be great . Also maybe i would recommend a deep clean of the store it looks like it hasn't been disinfected in years .

Gigi H.

Yelp
Perfect hamburger and fries always hot and fresh. When you have that burger bug. Here is your

Yelp
Is the food incredibly mediocre? Absolutely, but you knew that walking into the store. Local fast food joints are always funny to me and I'm glad they seem to have remained a Charleston staple. Late night junk food memories were created here and I hope you create some of your own as well
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
I love love love the ice cream here. It's my go to and they always have amazing flavors available. Their sundaes are large and plentiful and the toppings are endless. The inside is a bit crowded and small and always seems a bit dirty. The drive through is slow, but with the addition of hand held registers, such as square, they're able to take orders and payments much quicker. I will always recommend Ye Old to anyone looking for a legit banana split or perfect brownie sundae.
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
recently moved close by so had to try out the local ice cream shop! I got a strawberry milk-shake which was delightful. The ice cream was fresh so it had bits of strawberry in my shake. My boyfriend got peanut butter chocolate ice cream, which was very rich and fluffy. Can't wait to return and try more flavors!
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Ice cream and food are both fantastic. Reminds you of a little old time cafe. Food was out quick and staff were super quick to help you.

Yelp
The chicken tenders are salty and the cherry ice cream has chocolate chunks. - Zander age 7

Yelp
The name says it all!! Step back in time with Good Ole Fashion place that reminds me of historic ice cream parlor/ diner. Do yourself a favor and get the BLT..!! It is just about the best that I have ever had. It of course all starts with ripe tomatoes. Their's were lovely. Good crisp bacon and loads of it. Really delightful. Left me full but not overloaded! The potato salad was homemade and very good. I will return for ice cream next time. They are making fresh burger on flat iron right in front. I'll have one of those too when I return. Come get you some good stuff like Mom used to make for ya!!
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
Love Ye Old! It feels like I'm stepping back into the 90s here, & I hope they NEVER change! We live the gold digger sundae & any milkshake! This is such a great place to grab a quick treat, visit on date night, or celebrate a birthday!

Yelp
Here's the thing, I love Ye Old Fashion. I don't mind their prices because I have always appreciated their service and products. Yesterday, I had an incredible shocking experience and I hope no one ever has to deal with it. I was coming from downtown after doing a long walk around the battery with the pups. I figured with the calories just burnt, a good ole malt would be a nice treat. I come here all the time for a chocolate malt. I pulled in around 2:30 PM on a Friday to find the drive thru empty. Perfect! I pull up to window and notice three women chatting. I sit patiently waiting to be acknowledged, which took a few minutes. The one who opened window simply said 'hi.' I waited a few seconds for a 'welcome' 'thank you for waiting' or even 'whatcha want.' Nothing. So I simply asked for my malt. She asked what size and I said small. She asked for $7.31. I gave her $8.01. After taking my money, she turns and asks 'is there something wrong?' I politely tried to ignore her question because it seemed out of nowhere and I do not engage in confrontations. Clearly, she wanted to pick a fight and became hostile as she repeated herself multiple times. Then she says she is not taking my order and proceeds to hand me my money. I simply rolled my window up at this point. I sat hoping someone else would come to window and not be disgruntled. Another person did approach and asked again what size. I said small. Another lady came back with malt and I thanked her. Here's the thing, I patiently waited for those ladies to chat. I simply asked for a malt once I was acknowledged. Then I was attacked verbally by a very emotionally unstable human being who clearly needs to work on her people skills. She has a left arm almost completely covered in a tattoo. I have no problems with tattoos, but this is the only id of her I noticed. Ye Old, please tell this person she works with the public and should not try to pick fights with innocent bystanders who just want a malt. I did write an email in hopes their would have been a private response, but maybe that just got ignored too. Thanks for the malt. Next time try to be nicer to your costumers. Edited: I did receive an email from the GM. I know they pride in service and am relieved this matter has been noted. Thank you Ye.

Yelp
Been a while but the ice cream is amazing. Fairly priced too. We arrived at 10:15pm on a Thursday. Place was jammin'. We went through the drive thru even though the line was pretty long - due to COVID. They did take our order well before the window and since we knew what we wanted, the guy went in and made it and came back out fairly quickly. We paid right there too through a mobile device. The young man was very friendly. One knock which cost them a star. When our ice cream was delivered, they guy was not wearing gloves. Not good in normal times. Especially bad given COVID. We didn't complain and took the chance and ate it. So far so good. :-)
google avatar

Hailey M.

Yelp
Stopped by here on a whim and it did not disappoint! I've never been so blown away by plain old ice cream, but their sundaes are spot on. I waited about 30 min in the drive through, so I'll def order ahead next time.
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
Okay the amount of food is CRAZY! When I looked at the menu and saw that their sides were separate from their sandwiches, I thought well that's not nice. Well, the sides are a meal within themselves!!!!! Loved everything we ordered. It was a little on the pricey side but we also ordered enough to feed a family of ten! (We are a family of four) The sandwiches were delicious and so were the BASKETS of sweet potato fries, crinkle cut fries, and onion rings! Yes I said baskets. One basket plus sandwiches would've fed our entire family of four. We definitely plan on going back soon to try their enormous ice cream sundaes and banana splits! Much much much love to this place!

Kathleen A.

Yelp
This place was good. I had the burger deal and it was a Nice burger! I would go again when I visit Charleston. Ice cream was good too.
google avatar

Janet G.

Yelp
Order ahead for pickup or dine inside and enjoy the delicious smells. Make sure you check out the ice cream.
google avatar

Alana D.

Yelp
Delicious and adorable casual dinning. Burgers and ice cream are amazing and it's affordable as well our favorites are the Michigan mudhole ice cream and bacon cheeseburger
google avatar

Cesar A.

Yelp
The location is excellent, the staff is very friendly, the music is very good, the ice creams are amazing, and the food is very, very tasty, and a very good portion... the double bacon cheese burger, and a banana split, is a great combination...

Clara D.

Yelp
Thank ye! We had the best night!!! Thank you to the crew for the mozz sticks - ye made our night! Love, ye girls

Andrew K.

Yelp
Root Beer Float was perfect! Service was a little bit on the slower side due to how good this place is but nothing against the workers! Root Beer is a must if you are fan!
google avatar

Karla M.

Yelp
This place is HOPPIN! And for good reason. Their BLT sandwich is the best hands-down. I've never been disappointed. If you like root beer floats this is the place to go. I can't say I've ever been disappointed with their chocolate peanut butter ice cream either. Tonight I'm trying the egg salad sandwich with bacon and I'm pretty excited about it. A great way to end a Friday night!
google avatar

Leslie M.

Yelp
OMG!!! We wanted ice cream after dinner and found this place on Yelp. The line was wrapped around the building for the drive thru, but we knew we were heading inside anyways. Service was quick-ish. They are apparently famous for their sundaes, so I ordered the Gold Digger Sundae (Butter Pecan ice cream, butterscotch, sliced bananas,nuts,wh.cream. ) The sundae was HUGE!! See picture for reference compared to a dollar bill. They have a rather extensive food menu as well. One sundae was more than enough for two people to share.

Ashley M.

Yelp
If you are looking for basic ice cream, this is your place. But, be prepared to spend some money. Nearly $7 for a basic ice cream scoop is a bit steep.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Finally stopped in after driving by here for years. Ice cream is fantastic!! Not sure if they make their own - but great variety of flavors, some you might remember from growing up and others that were new at least to me (Michigan pot-hole). The important thing is that both were delicious. Also important - they don't mess around with skimpy Ingredients - HUGE strips of peanut butter in the chocolate peanut butter ice cream - like there's supposed to be. The non-ice-cream items are pretty good too, but the reason to go is the ice cream - from scoops to sundae's, floats to splits.... This is the real deal!!
