"Yellow Door, a self-described “neighborhood cafe,” has placed signage in a Montclair district window, Hoodline reports. The Piedmont Highlander says the spot will serve breakfast and lunch, with a focus on soups, salads, and sandwiches." - Eve Batey

Great to go breakfast spot. Perfect breakfast sandwiches and a deep list of caffeinated beverages. A few seats inside and out front

Thank goodness amazing Yellow Door came on the scene in Montclair. Efficient, healthy & delicious are just a few ways to describe this delicious eatery. Kale Chicken Caesar, Miso Chicken Bowl, the Breakfast Sandwich are just a few of our families faves. Don’t miss this local gem!

Google
I can definitely see Yellow Door in our morning coffee/breakfast rotation in the near future. Just outside the congested parking zones in the middle of the village, this coffee shop provides solid espresso drinks and good breakfast options (including sandwiches, burritos, pastries, and more). But, despite the fact that this place offers breakfast, they open rather late at 8am and don’t offer vegetarian substitutions to classics like the breakfast burrito. We’re always on the hunt for great vegetarian breakfast options, so this takes it down a notch. Otherwise, the service staff was quick, attentive, and helpful. I’m a vocal advocate for better breakfast options in Montclair and I think Yellow Door delivers.

Google
Hardest working cafe in Oakland! Lines can be long on weekends but the efficient staff churns along and smiles are everywhere. "E" for effort...and "P" for pastries! Terrific array of freshly baked goodies, including killer coffee cake. Don't forget takeaway - an impressive selection of daily salads, sandwiches, and soups.

Google
Delicious! Had the egg breakfast sandwich and the PBJ thumbprint cookie. Make sure to get there early because they will run out of breakfast sandwiches! They go real fast and it is a cheesy warm steal at $5. The thumbprint cookie is a peanut butter cookie with strawberry jelly filling. Very warm and rich like a good peanut butter cookie should be. Shout out to East Bay Express for showing me this place.

The best place to eat in Montclair. Without this spot, our family would never leave the house.

Google
This place is a gem. Good coffee, delicious baked goods, and very tasty sandwiches. I've tried everything on the menu at this point and the breakfast burrito and sandwiches are amazing, and the turkey lunch sandwich and salads are wonderful too. The atmosphere and shop itself is beautiful with quiet outdoor seating in the sunshine or nice indoor counter space if you want to work. They are limited in terms of days and hours which is the saddest part. I also worry they will go out of business as everything seems underpriced on their menu. Thank you Yellow Door! You are our weekly go-to for the whole family.

Google
Great food and coffee. I wish it it was open on additional days like Monday and Tuesday. Also, would be nice if the owner expanded. The cafe is a bit too small and so far it is the best breakfast/pastry place in Montclair. We need more places like this!

Yelp
Yellow Door is the ultimate neighborhood coffee shop! From delicious pastries to creamy almond lattes, everything is a delight. And OMG, the salads--they've converted me, and I'm not even a salad person! It's an absolute must-try.

Steven P.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast sandwich. We regularly stop by to pick one up when we head out for a trip up to Napa. Coffee is good, and they have a decent selection of pastries. There a a couple of tables outside on the sidewalk, where we sit with our dog.

Yelp
Local Montclair sandwich & salad cafe. Came here after my usual nail appt because I'm starving. Decided to go for the healthy option and got the salmon power bowl. Removing a star because the salmon was delicious but for $21 I feel like the size of the salmon was a smidge too small for what you pay for. The amount of avocado was also pretty paltry. The rest of the bowl was generous with the super thin slices of cucumber, cauliflower rice, edamame, and slices of fennel, red cabbage, and onion were plentiful. It's nice they have individually wrapped compostable utensils and tapatio packets for those that like more spice in their food. The Rishi tea packet selection was also impressive, as was their pastry and cookie selection. Their to go fridge has a good collection of grab and go items. Will come back to try the Asian Salad and their chicken salad sandwich.

Yelp
I was in Oakland and wanted to get a matcha since I'm not a coffee drinker and saw this place appear and had. Finding the place wasn't too hard since the door is literally the name of the shop, a Yellow Door! It was made it very unique and it was nice and clean inside. They offered a variety of drinks and food. I really wanted to like my drink due but I have to say it was probably the worst matcha latte I ever had. I saw the barista prepare the drink and noticed he used a lot of milk, which watered the whole drink and I did not taste a hint of matcha. I would not come back for the matcha but may be open to check out the food options in the future if I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Ambiance: Cute inviting locale in the Montclair Village that has both cafe style seating to have a coffee date with a friend and high bar stools with marble desks and nice accents that makes it feel very homey inside. The big windows and sunroof allow for natural light to illuminate the space which is a great change of pace if you're stuck inside all day. You'll be tempted by all the pastries and to go options behind the glass displays that it'll perk up your hunger just standing in line. Service: this place is very popular and you'll most likely see a line but it moved quickly. The workers are welcoming and work very quickly. Food came out after about 5-10 minutes after ordering. They forgot to add in the lentils and quinoa to this for my plate so that sucks. Food: Special Bowl: (4/5) Off-menu item that is a good mix of arugula, butternut squash, pita chips, and hummus. The pita chips provide a much needed crunch to this otherwise soft food dish. The butternut squash will add some carbs while you'll get half your daily need of greens from the arugula. I heard you can dress this up with hot sauce and while I didn't do this I agree it could use something to liven it up a bit. I didn't get to try it with the quinoa or lentils but otherwise a good option to try, I would prefer to try other things though. Breakfast sandwich: (4/5) eggs, sausage, cheese, English muffin. Nothing fancy here but what separates this above others is the smoky romesco sauce. Almost like a tapatio but a little more smoke to it really makes it special. They toast the bread nicely so you get a crunch texture to the muffin without burning it. Would certainly get it again.

Yelp
Yellow Door is one of the best places for a bite in Montclair. There really are not enough high quality breakfast/lunch/coffee/baked good places like this around the east bay! Very good coffee, delicious baked goods and simple breakfast choices, amazing salads and I must say their chicken salad sandwich is outstanding in flavor and texture. It's one of those sandwiches you take a first bite and say, 'OH MY G'!!!! So VERY tasty. The roll is a perfect soft but not too soft compliment to the chunky fresh chicken salad within. You must try this sandwich if in the area!

Amara m.

Yelp
The food was pretty good I got the veggie sandwich and enjoyed it . The coffee was good as well. We came on a rainy day but the space is small but nice. The service is very efficient. The food/coffee was good but expensive, so if you don't mind the price point it's a good place to pop in and try.

Scott G.

Yelp
This place is crazy popular for a reason. Really solid breakfast and lunch options. The turkey sandwich and breakfast sandwich are awesome.

Cathy N.

Yelp
Love this wonderful neighborhood place! Their coffee and espresso are delicious. The food offerings are unique and really yummy. Counter service is quick and friendly. It's a fairly small spot but I've always managed to get a place to sit, sometimes after a brief wait.

Elisha S.

Yelp
The best spot to get fresh good food to feed your soul in Montclair.. I'm hooked on this place and never kno what to get each time.. this year I feel in love with kale salads.. and they have solid flavors for everything on the menu.. but u have to come in a timely manner be prepared to wait or if your not early enough they sell out.. many vegetarian options but u could always add some chicken to your order.. some prepared food in the fridge .. indoor or outdoor seating available..

Mary M.

Yelp
What an adorable little cafe. I've been coming here in the morning for the breakfast sandwiches, which are only $6. They have two choices: first option is a scrambled egg & chedder cheese with smokey romesco sauce on an english muffin. This one is heavy, but delish. The second option is a peanut butter and bacon sandwich with a lite covering of syrup. This second one is the perfect combination of salty, savory, and sweet. Note that this place is only open from Wednesday to Sunday and has limited hours into the afternoon. It closes at 2pm.

Regan T.

Yelp
I still maintain my opinion that Yellow Door serves the BEST breakfast sandwich in the entire Bay Area. Their secret is the perfectly crisped-up English muffin, the high-quality sharp cheddar, and made-to-order egg--that's actually pan fried rather than microwaved or reheated. And until now, the main missing component--what separates their iteration from any other attempts--was their delicious smoky house-made romesco sauce. But now they sell it in a tub for $10. When I say RUN, don't walk, to grab a container of this magical stuff, I mean it! It's seriously the best sauce I've ever tasted and it's available in their grab-and-go fridge (next to the napkins and trash cans). I've been putting it on everything: my own breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, grilled cheeses, just a plain slice of toast, pasta salad... it's so flavorful and elevates any dish you put it on. I almost want to keep it a secret so they never sell out but you're welcome in advance for sharing the love!

NA N.

Yelp
Always amazing and Montclair is lucky to have this place. I have had the chili, the Buddha bowl, kale, salad, and breakfast. I would also like to rave about the iced coffees.

Craig B.

Yelp
This is my go to place in Oakland/Montclair. I have never gone wrong and I keep finding great new additions. The miso chicken with brown rice during the week is wonderful and the piece de resistance is the shakshuka on weekends. This is one of those places that makes living in the Bay Area so special.

Rezahn A.

Yelp
Wonderful food & service. The bread pudding is my favorite- especially heated in the oven or air fryer!

Sarah T.

Yelp
I love this neighborhood cafe because it has lots of healthy and delicious choices, many gluten-free pastry choices, handy to-go soups for instant dinner and a nice vibe. I've tried salads, sandwiches, coffee--all great. I would recommend that the owner put signs on the tables stating a limit of one hour for tables and that employees are trained to approach diners who are clearly finished and just doing work there and ask "can I get you anything else? " and "I'm so sorry but because we are such a small place we do ask that you make the table available for other diners when you are finished." This is a small space and it's busy during lunch. There are always people nursing a cup of coffee for way too long doing work on their laptop. That isn't very nice as this is a small space with quite limited seating, and a small business owner. I would very much like to rely on this as a place where I can meet a friend for lunch and know I can sit down with them.

Allison L.

Yelp
Delicious $6 breakfast sandwiches! I'd be here every day if I was lucky enough to live in Montclair. Indoor/outdoor seating, very pleasant atmosphere. Nice people!

Sean R.

Yelp
Love this place so much - everyone is super friendly and the food is delicious. I usually get the Chinese chicken salad (it's grab-n-go) and it never disappoints. Their breakfast menu, especially their breakfast burrito, is solid, hearty, and yet light. I got a couple cookies today and the browned butter coconut cookie was INSANE.

Sherry Z.

Yelp
Make sure you check the days and times that they are open, luckily when I was scoping out a lunch place they were open. Minimal indoor and outdoor seating but think there is plenty of other places to sit in area. It's located along one of the main roads but side street parking is plentiful. Ordered an iced latte and a turkey sandwich. The sandwich was premade (don't have a problem with premade it's just how it is) which made service quick. I have to say even though the sandwich was made ahead of time, the bread was not soggy and the combination of the herb mayo, cranberry relish, and the turkey was amazing. I am normally not a turkey fan since I find it pretty dry for the most part, but I highly recommend this sandwich. Would definitely order again if I'm ever in the area. A solid latte, no big complaints.

Mike H.

Yelp
Good coffee and pastries. Typically there's a small line. Decent amount of seating inside and outside.

Kato D.

Yelp
I really wanted to rate this place higher, because I support businesses run by owners who are present and from what I was told from the person who recommended the place, the owner was there and working hard. The service was great, but there is a lot of pressure to tip when there is no service given, which is kind of a bummer. Everything is self-serve and I felt pressured to tip more than the 15%. The ambience is fun, and the pastries and cookies are pretty decent. However, the prices are a bit too high for the quality of products. The Sandwiches use bread that don't as taste fresh as the price warrants. Sandwiches also sit in a cabinet and you can notice flies in the establishment. While I was sitting outside, I noticed several months and gnats and other flies inside the window. They keep the doors open, however, seeing so many insects really gross me out. The quality of meats and vegetables they use for their sandwiches could be of higher quality and the quantity is modest at best. In order to be profitable I understand it's difficult to use quality ingredients in the most expensive area in Oakland, but I must be fair to compare the quality and price of food with other restaurants within driving distance. I really hope the owner reads this review and improves upon the freshness and quality of their products. If they focus on this, I'm sure they will get repeat customers but for me I don't think I'll come back.

Yelp
I ran into Yellow Door for a quick little work from home lunch today and I was FAMISHED. I was adamantly hoping they had my favorite chicken and miso brown rice bowl and they DID! Ahhhh it's so delicious. Ground chicken, brown rice, broccoli, carrots, scallions, with a good sauce. What's not to like?!?! They were incredibly quick and I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. In addition, I got a chewy ginger cookie and a vanilla latte. Needed a little something sweet and some caffeine to get me through the rest of the work day! Yellow Door is always so cute and such a sweet vibe. Love this place. It's been one of the best additions to Montclair in the last few years. Check it out when you're in the area! Come for the coffee, stay for the cookies because they are UNREAL

Christine H.

Yelp
So this place actually has a yellow door. Just getting that out of the way. The place is quite small and cozy, but it looks modern (lots of grey and white). Minimal seating (maybe enough for like four people). We didn't dine-in but took our iced americanos to-go. The Americanos were not too bitter, and they were not watery. Add a little cream and sugar, and it was pretty good. Service was fine.

Jack J.

Yelp
Chopped Asian Chicken Salad : Get it Eat it Love it It in the side case next to the delicious chicken salad!

Dakota T.

Yelp
This place hit everything you could want in a casual lunch spot or coffee shop! Great aesthetic - super clean and cute but not annoying. Also amazing food, I'd highly recommend their coconut brown butter cookie 10/10. They also serve Saint Frank Coffee!

Peter L.

Yelp
I've been on the hunt for a new cafe that's close to home, has good and (relatively) inexpensive coffee and food, and has tables for me to get work done. Checked out Yellow Door on a whim and so glad I did! I've been here twice in a row now and will definitely be coming here many more times. This place gets a lot of foot traffic, and for good reason. So far, I've had the egg breakfast sandwich (w/ bacon), peanut butter breakfast sandwich, and iced chai latte, which I'd recommend. They also have a variety of baked goods in their display case, so can't wait to give them a try the next time I'm here. Lots of tables inside and out front. Table turnaround is fast. Don't let the crowd intimidate you - I've been able to get a table upon walking in both times I've been here. It also seems like people don't stick around for long - we've all got things to do and places to be. There's lots of street and lot parking all around the area for $2/hr.

Mia M.

Yelp
OMG!!! The Brown Butter Coconut cookie is YUMMY! I am excited to try more menu items. Customer service ON POINT!

Kellen H.

Yelp
YUM! We come here after soccer shots on the weekends. Usually a line out the door but it moves quickly. Great pastries and coffee.

Ivonnie S.

Yelp
I dropped by Yellow Door Cafe for some coffee after a morning walk/hike at Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park nearby and was pretty happy with the decision. // Latte ($4.75): + Delicious - very rich, chocolate-y taste. According to the menu, all shots are double, and they use Saint Frank beans (which probably accounts at least partly for the price). Milk foam was definitely not micro foam (bubbles too big), but the drink temperature was perfect and I guzzled it down in minutes anyway. // Chocolate chip cookie with walnuts ($3): + This was decent but not particularly amazing when I first took a bite of it outside the cafe. I brought it back home and lightly toasted it, and it was MUCH better - the edges got nice and crispy, while the inside remained soft with gooey chocolate chips. Definitely recommend warming it up if you can resist gobbling it down immediately. The food menu is limited - it gave me the impression that they're trying to have a simple/healthy cafe food concept, but the choices weren't interesting enough for me to want to try anything. $7 for the vegetarian soup of the day seems pretty pricey, for example. I'd come here again for the coffee and maybe to read a book (after the pandemic) or catch up with a friend if they're also in the area. Note, parking in this area seems pretty limited. It's near popular restaurants like Daughter Thai and some brunch place that had a large group of people waiting outside. I took my chances parking in the Lucky Supermarket parking garage across the street.

Pur E.

Yelp
Amazing staff, delicious coffee and best of all, their cookies! I went back the next day to try more flavors because they were just that good. Mind you, I live nowhere close to this place. 10/10 must try!!

Jenna T.

Yelp
When you have local coffee shops in the neighborhood, how can you not support them?! This cute gem had everything, baked goods, coffee, and even salads and sandwiches. Coffee isn't bad and the service is quick and friendly. Definitely will go here instead of the corporate Starbucks around the corner. It's on a busy street so parking can be difficult.

Linda M.

Yelp
Chicken salad sandwich for $17 was awful. I thought this place was ok. Usually a line. Really?

Saied A.

Yelp
Amazing fresh food that you can have to go or in house. Tried the egg cup and it was delicious. Wanted to try the breakfast sando next time. The service was friendly and fast. Very welcoming vibe. Store was wel kept and they use St Frank beans! Will definitely be back. Was surprised at how much better this place was than Highwire down the block. Will be back to support this awesome local business.

Laurie H.

Yelp
Wednesday morning, walked down to the village with hubby for a coffee. Have honestly been meaning to come here for months....but....life. There's a very clear menu on the window, and then inside. Good coffee options. I chose a redeye and hubby had a cappuccino. I got the cheddar cheese scone and he had a breakfast sandwich. There are 3 tables spaced appropriately outside and we were lucky to get one with our pooch. Super friendly service, excellent covid practices, and the food and coffee were good. Will definitely return.

Victor G.

Yelp
Yellow Door isn't related to Yellow Pages...it dispenses pastries, sandwiches, coffee & other kinds of drinks. order inside, some seating outside. brew: Saint Frank Coffee (3) -wasn't as bold as the version in San Francisco, nevertheless, it was smooth & satisfying. -wasn't busy later in the morning.

Mike L.

Yelp
This place just opened this week in Oakland's Montclair Village. I stopped in for a cappuccino and a couple pastries which I felt were pretty good. They have outdoor seating and it nice furniture stacked up indoors that hopefully they will be able to use one day. They have a breakfast and lunch menu which looked interesting. I appreciate that they installed PPE precautions for social distancing, it might seem like a no brainier but not everyone goes all out. Also, at least when I was there it seemed like they were employing a good number of people and which is important right now The cappuccino was good, their espresso was pretty strong Good first impression, I'll try them again sometime.

Ivana Y.

Yelp
Yellow Door is our favorite cafe to stop by after Sunday farmers market. They have the best cookies, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee. Great place to stop by for a quick bite or to catch up with friends.

Dominick R.

Yelp
My boss has been bringing me here for lunch the last two weeks, we are obsessed with their fresh salads and the extremely good chicken salad sandwich they serve. Everything is extremely fresh and very tasty, it's a quaint local small business with a solid menu and great reputation I highly recommend

Lisa L.

Yelp
This cute cafe is the jewel of Montclair. They offer a huge array of cookies, scones, breads, muffins, breakfast meals (like breakfast burritos, egg sandwiches and egg tortes), salads, sandwiches and soups. There are always vegetarian and gluten free options. Everything is made from scratch--that day--and they continue to bake and prepare food throughout the day. You can taste how incredibly fresh each item is. Such a welcome contrast to the defrosted and reheated items offered at the other coffee shops in Montclair! Much of the staff has been there since it opened, and as a result, people are friendly and take pride in the service and food. They are the only local cafe serving San Francisco's coveted St. Frank coffee! The cafe is owned and run by two local business women, who are exceptional cooks and can usually be seen working alongside staff, preparing food throughout the day. We visit at least twice a week in connection with a walk to Montclair. Some of our favorites: coconut brown butter cookie, ginger cookie, sour cream coffee cake, breakfast burrito, blueberry muffin, egg cup, egg torte, turkey sandwich with cranberry relish, little gem salad, chicken salad with apples and cranberry, and lentil soup.

Raina S.

Yelp
Yellow Door is the perfect place to have a nice small breakfast. It is so cute and very petite. The food is amazing and when I go in there I feel happiness all around. The employees are all working so hard and it is a great neighborhood business. You should definitely go to Yellow Door!!!!!

Brandon M.

Yelp
A local gem. Their prepared foods are to be noticed. One of the best vegetarian/vegan sandwiches you can get! Their drinks are always all prepared excellently. Lastly, try their baked goods for sure!

Paul P.

Yelp
We go here for lunch on the weekends, and they have the best salads and sandwiches ever!!! We get the pink lady salad and either the chicken salad or veggie sandwich. They never disappoint, always fresh, flavorful, and creative. We also love all of the amazing baked goods, the chewy cookies are my favorite!

Oli L.

Yelp
Really like this place, my go to are the special salad and the rockie road cookies. But today the apples in the salad still and their produce stickers on them which tells me they don't wash/inspect the produce well and I find that super super gross. Probably will never order t again.

Nic S.

Yelp
This is a very charming neighborhood cafe. Their baked goods are delicious (especially their scones) but the breakfast burritos are really special. I come regularly just for that!

Julie F.

Yelp
I have not been able to crack the code of when to order sandwiches here. I have had their picnic sandwich here once and it was amazing. Maybe the best sandwich I've ever had. Since this place is on my way to work, I stopped by this morning to pick up a sando for work, and was told they don't have them. They're not available until "lunchtime." Bummer, but fine. I came back at 12:45 and they were out of the rolls they use to make the sandwiches, but they can make me a different and not as good sandwich. If someone finds out the golden hour where the sandos are available and they are not out of the ingredients for the sandwiches, please let me know. I would love to have one again some time.

Reena S.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while. The place itself is adorable. My review, and the reason for the three stars is mainly for the chai drink. It was sooo overpriced, for something that was poured from a carton with milk added. I could legit buy the whole carton of the chai concentrate and milk for the same price and make it for myself at home.... It's totally my fault for coming here and ordering the chai drink. If I come back I'll be sure to try their coffee instead!

Kathy R.

Yelp
Just left Yellow Door after another delicious breakfast served up by a wonderful staff. This is a great Montclair cafe

Khaliq A.

Yelp
I had the breakfast burrito last week and got food poison. I asked could I have it with no cheese and they said it would take 7 min to make. the cook didn't look to thrilled that he had to cook it because they're all pre made. I think it wasn't cooked all the way done.

AJ G.

Yelp
Love their breakfast sandwich, and their Kale salad. Folks are always friendly, and although usually pretty busy, I can always find a spot to sit and enjoy their wonderful food.
