Irreverent, chef-driven American-Chinese bar comfort food.
"This North Loop American Chinese restaurant offers up a dedicated late-night menu, which comes in handy since it’s located within a bar, the Golden Hour. This means hot dogs like the mapo tofu chili cheese dog or a kimchi dog, along with nachos, egg rolls, and queso. The late-night menu is available from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. nightly, in-house only." - Nadia Chaudhury
"This newcomer Chinese American-ish restaurant within North Loop bar Golden Horn is a great destination for easygoing yet creative food. Think queso with chile crisp, scallions, and wonton chips; an excellent orange cauliflower entree, and fun hot dogs in the late nights. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury
"The dive bar-restaurant trend continues in North Loop, where the new American Chinese restaurant Yellow Ranger opened within the also-new bar Golden Horn in April. It’s where chefs Jeremy Young, Zane Frisch, and Kyle Harris lean into Young’s version of American Chinese food. There is chile crisp queso with broccoli and wonton chips; egg-fried rice; crab rangoons, orange cauliflower; and lo mein. There are lunch, dinner, and late-night menus too. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury
"Yellow Ranger makes the kind of savory fried food we crave after two mezcal palomas in on a Friday night. It’s a counter-service operation at Golden Horn, a casual, ‘70s-themed cocktail bar located beneath Barfly’s in North Loop. This is bar food through a Chinese-American lens, which means you’re a QR code away from crispy crab rangoons, wonton chips with chili-spiked queso, and a semi-smashed burger with charred scallions and hot mustard aioli. It’s not stuff you need to go out of your way to get if you’re at home watching Netflix, but it’s a solid option to have nearby when you’re out grabbing drinks. Food Rundown photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Crab Rangoons The wontons are crispy, and there’s a generous portion of cream cheese and crab inside. Start with an order of these. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Crispy Green Beans These are great. They’re seasoned well and the fresh mint on top is a nice touch. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Lo Mein The noodles are cooked well, but the sauce is a little too heavy on the wine, which ends up overpowering the taste. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Taiwanese Fried Chicken The breading is a bit uneven and the meat could use a dipping sauce, but it’s fried well and the salty chicken pairs nicely with those palomas. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Semi-Smashed Burger Yellow Ranger’s burger combines a thick center with paper-thin edges—kind of like a UFO. We love a smashed patty with crispy edges, but ours was a little overcooked, and burnt around the edges. Skip this." - Nicolai McCrary
"Yellow Ranger is a dive bar restaurant, found within the new spot Golden Horn. And the food is bar-appropriate, with queso topped with chile crisps served with wonton chips and charred broccoli; hearty crab rangoons and egg rolls; and orange cauliflower (rather than the ubiquitous chicken). The name references the Power Rangers Taiwanese-Korean-American character Trini Kwan, whose superhero costume was, yes, yellow." - Nadia Chaudhury
