Yellow Submarine - Review - South Lake Tahoe - Tahoe - The Infatuation

"Yellow Submarine is the quintessential sandwich stop in South Lake Tahoe, whether you drop by before a long day spent at Pope Beach or to ground yourself back into reality after a high-altitude hike. The decades-old sub shop has a bunch of pre-determined combos, as well as the option to build your own. The chronically indecisive should go with the titular Yellow Sub, a protein monster that comes with a triple whammy of salami, ham, and pastrami." - Julia Chen

Google
Great atmosphere, but the sandwiches were a letdown The place has a really nice vibe, and the whole staff is friendly and helpful — truly great service. Now, about the food: we ordered four different sandwiches (#23, Tahoe, Cubano, Hot Roast Beef, and #17), and honestly, they all tasted exactly the same. They don’t skimp on ingredients, which is great, but there are so many packed into each sandwich that the flavors get muddled and nothing really stands out. The prices are pretty steep: $14 for a half and $24 for a whole. For everything to end up tasting the same, it’s a shame.

Google
This place may have changed owners over the last 50 years but always a great sandwich...take it from someone who grew up in Tahoe! I got the full sandwich (spicy Italian) and worth it!

Marshall C.

Google
Very good subs. Just beware, they are HUGE! Quality ingredients and excellent service. It was just what we needed for our Tahoe afternoon before heading out o Inspiration Point.

Google
Great sandwich spot… super nice people, great conversation . Iced tea and lemonade were out of this world! Well done 👍🏽 sandwich was more than I could’ve hoped for - in size and in quality . Cool place, check it out

Google
This place was so good! Right when we entered we were created. The guy that helped us was so nice. I got the yellow sub on sourdough with everything. I definitely would come back. Cozy atmosphere and clean.

Google
Great sandwiches in a family friendly environment. We are here 2x this week. Sandwiches are huge with generous portions. I could only eat 1/2 at a time so I got 4 meals out of 2 half sandwiches. Yum

Google
Honestly one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in my life. Spicy Italian on Focaccia was incredible. The owners and everyone working were so nice and amazing to talk to. Can’t wait to come back next time we are in town.

Google
Food was amazing! The sandwiches here are delicious, some of the best in town by far. The only reason for my 4 stars is the wait time. I called in an order on the phone and was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. Perfect! I arrived 30 minutes after I called and was told they were just finishing up. I told them no worries I would just wait. 20 more minutes went by before they finally told me my sandwich was ready. There was only one other customer in the store the whole time I was there so it wasn’t like they were super busy. I definitely recommend for the flavor but know it’s not a fast stop. My order was just 1 sandwich.

Yelp
Ok. Service was top notch!! I am doing this review while eating the spaghetti o soup! Yes it absolutely excellent. Chunky meatballs and tons of extras in it for a great flavor. We made a Turkey avocado sandwich on focaccia bread and had it pressed in the panini press. It is superb! The photo is just a half of the sandwich. Highly recommended. .

Yelp
Located in a strip mall, parking can be challenging at times. This place however does not mess around with their sandwiches. I ordered a turkey with provolone cheese and this thing was massive for $20 and that was on the cheaper end. I suppose $20 is the going rate for sandos these days? This was big enough to split so daughter and I took this to the beach to enjoy. Service was quick, ambiance is okay. Why eat inside when the outdoors is so lovely?

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. Fresh bread meat and veggies. Good vibes. This place has changed ownership 3 or 4 times over 40 years I've lived here and it was always good but never quick enough. This owner has given this place the change in storefront and staffing this place needed. Great job guys!

Yelp
You've heard of pineapple on pizza, but how about pineapple on a sub sandwich? Yellow Submarine knows where it's at! Stopped by for some lunch on a beautiful early spring Tahoe day. I was impressed right away by the smell walking in to Yellow Submarine. We ordered our two half sandwiches and some chips. The total came out to about $30. The wait was a bit long, but they were busy and everything is made fresh so it's worth the wait. Super friendly staff and great vibes in the shop too! Plenty of indoor seating. These sandwiches are HUGE! A full sandwich could easily feed 2-3 people. The chicken salad was great with nuts and some sweetness added. The hot Hawaiian was a winner. The pineapple brings a great sweet and savory vibe to an already great sandwich. Yellow Submarine will certainly stay on my South Lake go-to list!

Yelp
Date: Sunday, November 17th, 2024 Time: around 3pm Meal: Lunch Takeaway #12 Hot Pastrami: Thinly sliced Pastrami marinated in its steamy juices topped with your choice of cheese ($14 half) #23 Spicy Italian: Hot Capicola, Salami, Pepperoni with Provolone and a handful of Pepperoncini's ($14 half) When the hubby wants a sandwich, he wants something simple and tasty. Since I was visiting another spot for takeout around the corner, the hubs stopped by here to grab a few sandos. Prices listed above are what I believe each half was priced. I did not get a copy of the receipt, so not 100% sure. But our total with tax and tip was $36.05. Pastrami is his go to. I believe a reuben is one of his favorite sandwiches. It was hot and melty. The bread was a lil much for me, but we joke that bread is one of his favorite food groups, so the hubs enjoyed it. The italian was more my jam. I adore a good charcuterie and peppercinis, so this made for a nice bite. Tho I'd rather have sliced bread versus a roll. But that's just my preference. Bread is definitely not one of my fav food groups. Lol! The halves were actually a good size. We weren't sure if they would be worth it at $14 each, but they weren't too bad. Solid place to grab an old school sandwich. REVIEW #3629

Yelp
Great spot for lunch as it is a few short steps from the beach. I parked near the beach, walked over and got food and headed back to the beach to enjoy. I was grateful the cashier suggested a half sandwich for one person because even that was too much. I had left overs to take back to the hotel! I did turkey, salami and cheddar on Dutch crunch. Everything was delicious and their pickles are super good! I would choose a differ t bread next time because I felt like the amount of bread overpowered the ingredients. The drink selection was great with options for any preference. The prep area looked clean and the seating area was very clean. Sandwich was made in a timely manner and all staff were kind. Add this to your list if you need an easy lunch!

Yelp
Very friendly place. The cashier was very helpful with suggestions on the picking the best sandwiches. Loved the comfy atmosphere a feeling of a fun time. I ordered the small Italian sub on Dutch crunch bread. It was really good. I really liked the shredded lettuce and it was piled with lots of meat. When I visit again I will ask for extra mayo it was a little dry with over power of mustard. I did add some mayo after the fact which made for the perfect sandwich. .
google avatar

Lina A.

Yelp
Bought three sandwiches and they were delicious! The Dutch crunch was so soft on the inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside. The staff was super nice and welcoming! Would definitely recommend to anyone dropping through.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich place in Tahoe, right off 50, is Yellow Submarine. Always good service. Mountain, sandwich shop vibe. We ordered a foot long Turkey and Provolone with everything. It was bomb, of course. Fresh veggies, creamy cheese and better quality meat. The Bread is the bomb, baked locally. Always the go to for the lake! *I did notice that it seems they are putting a little less meat, don't do that!*
google avatar

Debbie C.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches and really great service albeit a bit pricey. There's an upcharge for meat like pastrami bringing the price of a large sandwich to $24. Nevertheless, the bread is good and the meat and toppings very flavorful and plentiful. Keeps us coming back.

Maria V.

Yelp
One of the best places in Tahoe to get a quick sub to go! So delicious!! Service was great, the workers were so friendly and welcoming, we went two days in a row after hiking. If you're looking for something refreshing, this is the place to be. The vibes were 10/10! Sandwiches were HUGE, even the halves- go check it out!
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Delicious! I am from Southern California and will forever be dreaming about these subs until I hopefully return one day. We ordered the spicy Italian and the club and they were both delicious. Service was a bit slow but they were busy and there's a reason for that. If you love a good sub I highly recommend stopping by.
google avatar

Mardi D.

Yelp
Sandwich was huge and delicious. The guys behind the counter was so nice. It was right down the street from a nice park on the lake
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
The place is exactly as I remembered it from 30+ years ago but larger, as they acquired more adjacent space. The portions are so huge...! The 6" hot pastrami (pictured) fed me twice...! The service was friendly and nice; good Tahoe kindness and hospitality. The restaurant is off hwy 50 by a half block, but worth navigating to! Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches ive had! The lettuce and pickles are my favorite! The bread was fresh & delicious. Had the spicy Italian

Yelp
My first time visiting here on Sunday was interesting. There was a slow moving line inside to the register where I placed my order for 2 identical large sandwiches. ($24 each). I chose Dutch crunch bread with everything. We must have waited around for 30-40 minutes for my order to be made! This is a very small sandwich shop with not much room inside for eating or waiting, and no directions as to where the line starts. The sandwiches were very large with lots of filling, but the bread was old and stale. I would probably not return. I had high hopes but was disappointed.

Yelp
PROS: - Big sandwiches CONS: - This is based on the pastrami. The texture was rubbery, had no flavor, and it just could have been better. - Waaay too pricey. - Very limited places to park during peak hours. FINAL THOUGHTS: - I don't know about their other sandwiches, but the pastrami was just not it. Won't be back.

Yelp
Local sandwich place that was great quality with amazing service. A half is really a good value because they load it up! Everything tasted very fresh on the veggie and the Dutch Crunch wasn't super hard like at other places. My partner had the Italian and he also loved it. The very nice guy at the register even brought our sandwiches out to us. Bummed I didn't get his name. When he saw we had a dog he even offered some deli meat! What a treat! The decor inside is a little dated but fits the style and gave it a homey vibe. They also have a restroom in the back! Super pet and vegetarian friendly!

Yelp
I liked it the one and only time I had it years ago but the other day my experience was just atrocious. Cashier made no eye contact which should have been my first clue. My 1/2 turkey + provolone sandwich was $15. I was disappointed with the very, very, very dry and crumbly Dutch crunch bread. This was barely edible, I had to take half off. My avocado was non existent and that was extra $, could've done without. I was really hopeful that it was going to be like my first experience and sandwich in the picture posted. Sad.

Yelp
It's been a hidden gem in Tahoe for a long time best sandwiches ever great service, friendly people

Alyssa M.

Yelp
The staff are friendly and fast. Sandwich was huge and ingredients were fresh. Cute shop with great drink and chip options.

Yelp
I'm not sure if this sandwich shop had any relation to the Yellow Submarine in Sparks that was closed down but it definitely reminded me of it. It's the main reason we came here. Yellow Submarine was my favorite sandwich shop growing up so I was devastated when they closed their doors (I still am). We came here for lunch on a Saturday. They must've just opened when we came because two women were sitting at one of the tables, chatting until one of them got up to take our order. The sandwich shop is decently sized with about 4 tables, it's clean and decorated with bear decor. My bf ordered the yellow sub and I ordered the hot pastrami. It took awhile for our sandwiches to come out and when I received mine it was a cold sub instead of hot. Although they have the same menu as the Yellow Sub that closed in Sparks, they do not offer alfalfa sprouts. I may have set my expectations too high, the sandwiches were okay and the service could've been better.

Abe M.

Yelp
Good sandwich. I ordered the namesake "yellow submarine" with the Dutch crunch bread. Delicious. Huge portion too. Saved half for a midnight snack. Nice shop half a block off the busy highway. Friendly service.
google avatar

Alux C.

Yelp
AMAZING! 10 stars if I could!! Better the "Ike's" and "mr.pickles" combined. The panini press is a must with any sandwich, but the amazing variety of sauces and toppings makes their sandwhiches my watering. I can't wait to go back to Tahoe and get them. The 2 nights I was in Tahoe, I had sandwiches for dinner both nights lol! Sean is amazing and really warms the place up!
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Love Yellow Sub! Always great size portions and friendly staff! Easy ordering with lots of options

Amy W.

Yelp
Great subs sandwiches! We ordered one hot and one cold sub and enjoyed both. Closest sub sandwiches I have found that compare to delis I grew up going to in NY. The only change I would make next time is light on the mayo and extra vinegar instead to be more nostalgic of the flavors I grew up on. Definitely our choice for sandwiches in Tahoe. So grab and sub and then walk a few blocks to the beach, grab a picnic table and enjoy!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
We were looking for a local sandwich shop and this spot was perfect! Cute spot to eat with great service and huge portions! Definitely shareable!

Yelp
Best Sub shop in Lake Tahoe! Has been here for a long time and still has family owned vibes. Try the potato salad it's homemade goodness!

Yelp
If you're in South Lake Tahoe and even thinking about grabbing a sandwich, do yourself a favor and head straight to Yellow Submarine. Their hot pastrami on focaccia is hands-down one of the best sandwiches I've ever had--perfectly toasted, generously stacked, and full of rich, savory flavor. The focaccia is soft yet holds up beautifully, and the pastrami is tender with just the right amount of spice and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. You can tell these folks care about quality and flavor. Friendly staff, fast service, and a laid-back local vibe. This place is a hidden gem. I'll definitely be back--again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
The Sandwich was just OK. . Small amount of Pastrami, very Bland. The prices are totally absurd. Safeway has a better Sub sandwich for 1/2 the price. Won't be going back any time soon. 4 subs for over $100.... Really

Yelp
Very kind and attentive service from the staff, delicious sandwiches with healthy options, and laid back atmosphere. Highly recommend for affordable food without the wait.

Yelp
With so many sandwich places to choose from, we decided on Yellow Submarine. Orders: *Pastrami on Dutch w.Provolone & "Everything" Thinly sliced pastrami cured with the perfect amount of spices that doesn't leave your mouth parched. *Capicola on Dutch w.Provolone & "Everything" Meats include Salami & Pepperoni with thin slices. The cured meats seemed pretty authentic I only wish there was more. Details: Everything-includes mayo, mustard, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper,EVOO, red wine vinegar & sprinkle of Parmesan Dutch Crunch Bread-I was expecting a hard crunchy bread but at Yellow Submarine it is a softer textured bread & still good, but I would try Sourdough next time. I definitely loved both sandwiches & the vinegar,EVOO was an authentic flavor component that kept me eating a full 6" sandwich. When in South Tahoe, give them a try & do some window shopping afterwards at a local gift shop next door or just peruse this quaint area.

Yelp
Best Chicken Salad Ever!!! We stopped here on a bike rental recommendation. Food was great. Staff super friendly! Will come back

phil b.

Yelp
Unfortunately their food is decent, lot of lettuce and bread. They never put enough sauce so be prepared to ask for extra. BUT the way they do their door dash is criminal!!! They add a 2 hour buffer so you can't cancel, and it says it takes them 1.5 hour to prepare your order- even for half a sandwich. Then they keep pushing it out so again you can't cancel for a full refund. Super shady and won't ever go here again.

K J.

Yelp
Always fresh sandos, saw a new face there, his name was dylan. Great customer service.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
HUGE sandwiches, would definitely have gone with a 1/2 which is like a whole anyplace else. Delicious, fresh and great customer service. I thought they were expensive but then I saw the size... only thing that would have made them better is a little salt and pepper.
google avatar

Diane C.

Yelp
Yummy sandwiches. Good service. Convenient location. We frequent this spot when heading to the lake or mountains.

Jasmine S.

Yelp
I'm writing this review right now because I'm sitting here doing homework in Sacramento and seriously contemplating driving 2 hours tomorrow for this sandwich. Any sandwich that elicits that reaction deserves a 5 star review. Most importantly: the sandwiches are SO GOOD. Usually when a place is super busy it means order mess ups or just subpar quality but not at this place. The gluten free bread is so good I was questioning if it had gluten. The vibe is great (especially for us Niner & Giants fans) and the people working there just look happy.
google avatar

Global T.

Yelp
Really good subs. HUGE. I got a full which is way too big for me. I couldn't even eat half. But now I have left overs for later. The service was great and the ambiance is really cool. They have a little back room with games and golden tee. I'll definitely be coming back as I've been trying to find a good sub shop in Tahoe for a while. Skip the port of subs next door and try Yellow Submarine!

Yelp
Super cute and super good This place has been around since the 70s and it's clear to see why it's a local favorite. The menu is simple and straightforward with a couple of surprises if your willing to branch out a bit. I tried the Dutch Crunch bread and whoa... I've never had anything like it! So unique! It was soft and light with a slightly crunchy exterior- it gave a vibe of putting potato chips in a sandwich and who hasn't tried that before. The interior is small and cozy with plants and games all around. There's not a lot of seating, but if you're lucky enough to get a spot, it's comfortable. Everyone working there was super nice too. Helping us out navigating the menu and answering our questions without making us feel like out of towners, which was a nice change of pace. Overall, I was delightfully surprised and would recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a sub sandwich that slaps.

Kristina N.

Yelp
Came in here at the end of a quick trip to Tahoe I took with my fiancé. I ordered the #7: Ham, Salami & Provolone and he ordered the #19 Club Sub: Turkey, Bacon, and Provolone. Customer service was neutral, neither outstanding nor bad. Food was a bit pricey. 2 regular sandwiches, 2 bags of chips, and 2 Arnold palmers ran us up to $42. Flavor and quality were most definitely there. The sandwiches tasted great and you do get a lot of meat. Unfortunately, my sandwich was made wrong. They gave me turkey and ham instead of ham and salami. It was a bit disappointing. I didn't bother having it corrected since it was too busy inside and I didn't notice until I was already a few bites into the sandwich.

Yelp
My new favorite spot in Tahoe! Absolutely flawless cold cut sub. The bread tasted fresh and their shredded lettuce is on point. Friendly and fast service too!

Aron D.

Yelp
The best sandwiches in South Lake, hands down! Always really cool people working there too.

Edward H.

Yelp
The #24 lacked recognizable sliced turkey, avocado was brown and cheese. The remainder of the sub was filler (lettuce). There was 1 walk in order ahead of me. I waited 20 minutes for my sub to be prepared. The person wrapping the sandwich whistled and coughed as he did this. Over priced.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awesome Hit this place for lunch after the lake with my family. Husband and I shared a whole sandwich. Chose French bread which was so fresh. Staff was friendly and patient. Lots of traffic in and out of this restaurant has seating inside and outside. Sandwich's are made in front of you. You can create your own sandwich as my one daughter did and she loved it. Lots of choices of sandwiches. They have chips and drinks. Fresh lemonade and iced tea. Would definitely recommend and will go back.
google avatar

Karina R.

Yelp
We ordered a small catering order for a bridal shower luncheon and the sandwiches were a crowd pleaser! FYI, when the shop gets busy they turn off their phone and it goes straight to a voicemail that is not set up. Ours was a last-minute order because our original plan fell through. Once we did get through, the shop was really helpful and accommodating.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
love this place, especially the breakfast sandwiches. also highly recommend dutch crunch bread

Will B.

Yelp
We got the yellow submarine and Pastrami sandwich. Both were good but the pastrami was our favorite. Really friendly staff and sandwiches were ready quickly. Prices look high but just the half sandwich was enough to split between two people. Grab a sandwich and walk to the lake to eat them!

Bruce A.

Yelp
Fantastic subs! We stopped this afternoon to pick up cold subs for dinner. They were really good. They were slammed with orders even in the middle of the afternoon. It might be a good idea to call in your order. We each ordered a small sub. Neither one of us could finish them. Well done Yellow Submarine!
