Yellowstone Art Museum

First time visiting, but won’t be the last. I liked: kids spaces, gift shop, that there’s a cafe you can hang out in, the olfactory sensory experience!! Noticed I didn’t see many interesting photos this time but that could just be the exhibits on display. Also would be intrigued to see more objects. Overall it was a great time with my girlfriend and I plan to come back on my own just to hang out sometime.

When my wife and I visited the Yellowstone Art Museum, we were greeted by Carmen who was very friendly and knowledgeable. She provided plenty of helpful information and answered all of our questions. The artwork and displays within the museum were captivating, providing a unique and enjoyable experience.

This art museum is in downtown Billings, Montana. It has a very interesting group of exhibits. It's set up as suggested admission price rather than required amount. The museum is well worth a visit. I would recommend giving yourself an hour and a half to 2 hours

It's a quiet place to enjoy a diverse selection of curated art for a variety of tastes. Collections are updated routinely. There is an area for kids as well as interactive activities for all ages throughout.

went to this museum on a chilly october afternoon and the atmosphere was perfect. beautiful works of art all around with a cute gift shop to boot. some exhibits were closed off or under construction the day we had walked in so our tickets were cheaper than usual. REALLY enjoyed the "global asias" exhibit and the artist-in-residence's exhibit at the time. lots of inspiration to be found here!

Went here on a whim with my kids today. Nice facility - clean and nice displays. Thought the admission process was a little high for adults. I was hoping there would be a little more on display for the price. We did enjoy the atmosphere and the pianist was a nice touch.

Really great experience, I attended with large group of children (scouting requirement) and we were greeted with a smile, the security guard offered to give us a tour as no docents were readily available. The children stayed engaged with the guide and had a great time exploring the exhibits. Highly recommend for all ages and admission is free for next 3 years!

Nice small modern art museum. They received a grant so it's free - she said for the next couple years. A nice variety of work. The had a small area with children's art which I loved, as I got hooked on art while young. They have an artist in residence program - very cool. It's In another small building behind the main building. There was an artist, with her installation, available while I was there. Easy walk from downtown hotel but I saw ample parking. The had a piece by Alexander Upshaw 2023. In the text regarding the tribal regalia- they state for the photos (long ago) he used "costumes" You have to be careful with the word costumes. If the pieces are from their regalia you don't use "costumes". Costumes are for dressing up for Halloween. I think the text was saying the photographer took a native Americans from a tribe and dressed them in regalia which actually belong to a variety of tribal nations. An education explanation should be included here. Consult your local tribes so it's proper. Adornment is of if talking about a necklace, dress which is used for everyday wear.

Simple understated approach to history& art. Will James exhibit is treat & aprons in gift shop are practical

A definite place to go if youre a local or just passing through. The art they show is quite remarkable and impressive- showing just how talented some people around here are. There is much to see and if you are a true art enthusiast, like myself, you will have no issue with spending at least an hour or two in awe of what it before you.

I have to admit, I came in with very low expectations as this was "Billings, MT", not Rome, London, Vienna or Paris. I was in Billings for a "business" trip but had some time to kill, and it was just a couple blocks from my hotel. You're in Montana, so naturally the art works are going to be leaning western cowboy themes, but I was pleasantly surprised by the good variety of modern and contemporary pieces. Triceratop Head...check Metal Horses...check Artistic surreal nudes...check Animal sculptures... Sheeps, Cows, & Birds...check Nice modern airy rooms, very clean, and a friendly staff. If you happen to be in Billings, and like art, this is a great way to spend 30 minutes. $6 adults, or $3 if you're a student.

This place is a MUST GO TO if you're in Montana. I came to Montana for a wedding and since I didn't have much time to do anything - couldn't go to the actual Yellowstone, there aren't many activities with nature. I don't mind that tho. I love museums so much and this one was on my radar because I love art. And, they did not disappoint. For $3-7 (depending on student ID and such), you have access to the whole thing. SO CHEAP. Omg... I spent half the day there because I looked at EVERYTHING. And, I like to participate in the interactive. They has a place where you could "leave your mark" and draw on the wall. YES, I DID THAT. There was a place to create your own mixed media (papers, glue, etc) and I did. I MADE IT ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE because that shit is real. The artwork is stunning and I'm still moved by their collections. Jaune Quick-To-See Smith's exhibition was just beautiful. You could feel her struggles and frustrations and everything. The employees were so friendly. I ask a lot of questions. They were super patient. This place was clean and just so great to just spend half the day in. PARKING: I walked from my hotel, so I don't know how parking is.

Good collection of contemporary art. Interesting building partially made from County Jail. No tickets required - so be sure to make a donation!

Very disappointed, the upstairs could have been interesting but they had the television blaring and it took away from the quiet enjoyment I longed for in an art museum. Oh

An exceptional treasure to have in downtown Billings! Love that our small town (yes, it's small to me) can have such a great place to enjoy the arts. Rotating exhibits. Wonderful airy space. Kid-friendly. Affordable. Refined but still approachable. Really a wonderful place for residents, visitors and special events.

When we had to spend more than 4 hours in Billings before our flight we thought...what can you do here? YAM was a great surprise if you really appreciate art. The place has a nice design and different expositions. For a small city like this, this was a jewel!

We stopped by during a first Friday art walk. An elderly man clad in tie-dye strummed Jimmy Buffet covers on an acoustic six string. A man in his mid-twenties hawked soda, water, beer, and wine from behind a mobile bar. The collection of art varied widely. Traditional depictions of cowboys roping steers saddled up next to abstract modern pieces. Forlorn-looking inner city teenagers posted up next to a large yarn mouse sculpture. There's something for everyone here. Another exhibit featured a collection of sculptures an artist made from the faces in her high school yearbook circa 1968. The YAM sits in the heart of downtown Billings. The architecture itself is worth checking out: vaulted ceilings, immense plate glass windows, and a small courtyard in the the center make the YAM unusual. The YAM is a place Billings can be proud of.

Great pieces of art for a small museum. Has all contemporary art pieces and need to get the key to see the vault across the street.

The staff of the Yellowstone Art Museum do a beautiful job curating relivant and interesting exhibits. The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable. Worth the stop if you're in Billings.

2 words: Lego exhibit. I know it's not famous but it is a cool to learn that this art museum has truly been transformed. It was once the county jail :) I know, that's kinda cool. You can definitely tell upon looking closer. The staff could be a little more plesant but It is an art museum so maybe that's why they act the way they do. Support local is my advice.

This place is in a very sketchy part of town. People with warrants pee on the building. I understand that the staff at the museum are often afraid to get out of there cars to go to work. The museum director says even the crosswalks in the area are too dangerous to use. The director also said that transients have urinated on the building so much it smells. The director of the museum today was complaining about all the passed out transients by the visible vault and trash being everywhere. It is in a cool building with interesting architecture. The building is handicap accessible but the more I read from themuseum director the more I will avoid it. From what the director has said this place sounds dangerous and possibly a health hazard avoided at all costs. Today 5/4/20 MR. Knicely the museum director sent the city council a email with pictures of human feces on or around the museum. MR Knicely acknowledges in his email the risk to the public health at his facility. This facility should be shut down. If people are getting sick by going to this facility Mr. Knicely should be held accountable in my opinion. It's time for this poorly run and dangerous facility to close for the safety of our community.

Admission price seems a little pricey for what little there is to see. Sorry just my take on things

There are two things to say about the YAM right now. One of these is the restaurant is excellent. Their Drunken Crab soup hits the spot. The salads look good too. The veal was a little tough in places. The wine was average. The other thing is: the display of art from the collection of Miriam Sample, bless her soul. Really good stuff. The Good for Kids check below is for the art, not the restaurant. Lunch is from 11 to 2 Mon through Sat. They also have a tapas and wine thing on Thurs afternoons

We quite accidentally learned about the Lego exhibit and were pleased to be able to fit this into our plans. We LOVED the Lego exhibit, as well as the others. The museum has a beautiful gallery space. We got there upon opening, so were able to enjoy the exhibits at a leisurely pace. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and there was information about other things to do in Billings, and upcoming events at the museum as well. Saw the large sign outside about a restaurant, but missed it inside -- wonder where it is hidden? Will have to look for it next time I am in town. Great value for the very reasonable price of admission. Much more fun than the corn maze we went to later (and 1/3 the price!).

This is a nice, quaint museum in downtown Billings. There are usually two-three shows going on. They are always interesting and informative. They support local artists, which I think is awesome. The price is just right for an afternoon of quiet reminiscing and pondering. I love the gift shop for all those quirky, cute little gifts. The shop is just a tad spendy, but what museum's isn't? Also, it all goes to a great cause. Locals and travellers alike should make a pitstop here for an hour or two of looking at art and history.

They always have something different to offer here. Whether it is music and cocktails or just a daytime with the kiddos, this place has a little of something for everyone.

Interesting art, appallingly rude staff. The security guard followed us much too closely staring at us the entire time, giving us all the creeps. I've never been treated that way in a museum. Never. He had the audacity to prevent me from snapping a photo of a painting. Our experience was totally ruined by this bizarre stalker. Don't pay a cent to be demeaned like that.
