The Best Restaurants In Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Yellowtail is an always reliable spot for a low-key date or relaxed group dinner. The nigiri and sashimi are all solid, and appetizers like crispy fried tofu with ponzu make a great pre-sushi snack. It’s BYOB and has reasonably priced rolls (most are around $16), so you won’t have to check your bank account in between dishes. Weekends are usually busy, so reservations are a good idea. But if you’re just rolling in on a random Wednesday with some friends and your favorite six-pack, you should be fine." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

Seattle Starters That Are The Main Event - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Have your phone ready as soon as you see the yellowtail at Paju approaching. It's beautiful, but also delicious, so the less time you spend snapping the sooner you can start eating. Here, they treat hamachi like origami paper, weaved with sliced green apple to resemble a flower in bloom. (Yes, it's quite poetic). Rounding everything out is a refreshing naengmyeon broth with subtle hints of lemon verbena. It’s almost too pretty to eat—almost." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley, gabe guarente, aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo, aimee rizzo, aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo, aimee rizzo, gabe guarente, kayla sager riley, aimee rizzo, aimee rizzo

Yellowtail Sushi - Review - Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This relaxed Lakeview restaurant is a reliable spot for a low-key date or group dinner. Yellowtail’s nigiri and sashimi are solid, while dishes like crispy fried tofu with ponzu make a great pre-sushi snack. It’s BYOB and has reasonably priced rolls (like the $16 Okaido maki with spicy tuna and unagi), so you won’t have to check your credit card balance in between bites. Weekends get pretty busy (in the front and at the bustling sushi counter in back), so reservations are a good idea. But if you’re spontaneously rolling in on a random Wednesday with some friends with a bottle of wine, you should be fine." - John Ringor

Google
I will say coming back from visiting Japan last year and having Yellowtail Sushi Bar was uplifting. I felt the quality of the fish was as good as I had it when I was in Japan. Really brought back good memories for me! The chefs platter was worth every penny! The service was great! I have to say the ambiance was good. I did think it was a little too dark at the front of the building. Overall I will recommend YSB&AK is worth every bite!

Google
Fantastic and delicious sushi! They have a large menu with all the usual options plus even more. We started with the miso soup which was delicious, and then split the spicy scallop roll and the yellowtail shoga roll. Both were delicious and I would recommend. Service was quick and attentive but not rushed. The prices here are very fair and good for the neighborhood.

Rebecca B

Google
Its byob which is great and the sushi is really good. One important thing though is that its very dim lighting with loud house music. so i wont recommend for certain things but cute for a fun girls night.

Annie S.

Google
Really good sushi. Started with a crispy tuna roll & chicken karage then got the warm roll a scallop on top and the sashimi salmon flight & the white fish salmon flight. Service and server were great.

Jasmine K.

Google
First time at Yellowtail and I had quite a mixed experience. The food itself was very good and the fish was incredibly fresh, although I was hoping that the portions of the rolls especially for the price were a little larger. As a sushi place, I could definitely see myself coming back as I felt like they had a great menu! However, I came with a group of 6, and it took a long time to get our order in. After we ordered, it took 50 minutes for the first plate of food to hit our table and around 60 minutes before all our food was here. The food took so long that some of us ended up walking over to a nearby taco place to get a quick bite. I might put it down to the fact that they were busier than usual but I’ve also never waited so long for food in my life. I’ll definitely be giving it another try maybe at a less busy time!

Sam R.

Google
Hands down my favorite sushi spot around! Everything we ordered was beautifully plated. The salmon flight is my favorite plate. Every bite is an explosion of flavor! But the reality is, I can say that about everything we ordered. Not to mention how attentive the staff is. Highly recommend for sure!

Google
Amazing food. Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had! The appetizers and soups are great too. Very cute inside.

Google
It's a jewel to have this high-quality Japanese restaurant you be a BYOB. I have been here many times...

Yelp
They were really busy when we arrived, and we originally wanted to sit outside -- but then it started to rain. We waited a little while to be seated, but we didn't mind at all because the food was absolutely delicious and the service was amazing. Our server was super fun and helpful! She recommended the Yellowtail Shoga Maki, and it was so good. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Super yummy sushi. The ambiance is very chill, would be a great date spot if sushi is a mutual love!

Yelp
This was my second time at Yellowtail and it was just as good as the first!!! My favorite thing on the menu is the spicy scallop roll - don't skip this roll!!!! The crispy rice is good, but not my favorite I've ever had. It doesn't have a ton of rice on the bottom, so most of it just tastes like crunch instead of a crunchy outside and soft inside. A great thing about Yellowtail is that it's BYOB so you can bring your own wine / drinks to drink while you eat! They are usually pretty busy, so I recommend making a reservation.

Yelp
This was my second time dining after a few years. The ambience is very intimate so do next expect to come here for a lively atmosphere. The only aspects I enjoyed were the food. The yakitori shrimp was good as well as the kani California roll. As far as the service it was subpar. We had to ask for our wine to be opened, found out the water was filtered tap water (a faucet on the front bar), and out waitress was not very helpful in explains the menu options. I enjoy trying new food but was turned off by her lack of knowledge. The menu is sectioned into different tabs so make sure to click through each one before selecting your meal. Google pictures before you arrive if you're not familiar with some of the choices. I would order food to go but skip out on the dine-in service. there is a $5 uncork fee so bring twist cap wine if you want to avoid a fee for them opening your byob

Yelp
Excellent service and menu selection here. It's BYOB so you can choose your own adventure with drinks. My favorite item was the Fire Dragon roll. They also have great karaage and agedashi tofu. Takoyaki was good, very soft and gooey. There was a grilled octopus option that was EXTREMELY good, recommend finding and ordering that one. It was kind of dark and loud at our table in the back, but we managed. Trendy restaurant problems, I suppose. This is great Japanese option in the area if you're looking -- I'd happily return to try more of the menu!

Sahnha K.

Yelp
Best sushi I've had in a while! Everything was fresh and flavorful. Service was attentive and friendly, even during the peak dinner rush. The ambiance was very relaxed and modern making it a good spot for both casual dinners and special nights out. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
Nice spot for dinner - yummy sushi, friendly service, and good wine selection. I got to go during Dine Out on Broadway, where they close the street to cars and let nearby restaurants set up outdoor dining in the street. Super fun!

Yelp
I was so excited to eat here. We made a reservation, but still got sat 45 min late (oh well, things happen). Our waitress was aggressively rushing us all night. Food was really delicious, but not sure if it's worth getting yelled at by our server. When it came time to paying the bill, we overheard our waitress talking SH*T about us to the table next to us!!!! Wth

Yelp
Walking in, there is blue lighting coming from a projection of jellyfish swimming in the open ocean on the back wall. Darker lighting around makes for a relaxed tone. The service was good. Our server was friendly, and was able to withstand my puns I ordered the yellowtail scallion roll which was good, but nothing which was other-worldly. The takara hotate maki roll as the server recommended was absolutely amazing! The sauce was flavorful and generous. The spice on it was just right. The texture was correctly described as something that would melt in your mouth. If I come again, I'm just ordering 2 of these rolls! The godzilla roll piece I tried was also good. The cream cheese in it was quite unique where it tasted a tad more like regular cheese, but it was good. I tried a piece of a shrimp tempura roll and the star of that one was the topping of flakes. I'm not sure I've had a flaky topping that quite stood on its own like that before.

Yelp
Yellowtail HAS to be on everyone's must-eat list in Chicago! This Lakeview sushi place has a creative and delicious menu filled with lots of traditional rolls and so many innovative takes on sushi! We tried the Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna (marinated spicy tuna with scallion, unagi sauce, black tobiko, and avocado on top of crispy sushi rice) and the Handcrafted Nigiri Appetizer (2 Namasake Nigiri with Ginger Soy Sauce / 2 Hamachi Nigiri with Jalapeño Soy Sauce / 2 Bluefin Akami Nigiri with torch spicy Lava Sauce and Scallions) - both of which were PHENOMENAL!! Then for our rolls, we split the Salmon Mango, Shrimp Tempura, and the Takara Hotate Maki Roll (Avocado, tempura crunch, spicy mayo rolled in seaweed with giant domestic Scallop baked in creamy garlic sauce, Jalapeno, spicy sesame seasoning, and unagi sauce). The service here was great (our waitress gave us so many good recommendations!) and the interior is so cute. Out of everything, PLEASE try the Takara Hotate Maki roll & the Nigiri Appetizer! Those were SO SO GOOD!! Can't wait to go back and try out more of the menu!

Yelp
We had dinner at Yellowtail during Dine Out on Broadway, and it was very disappointing. We were seated and given water and then nothing for about 8-10 minutes. As the evening continued, the service became a bit better, but the food was meh. We opted to splurge for the "secret menu" bluefin tuna flight which we were told was very tasty and melt in your mouth tender. It was neither and definitely not worth the $66 price for six pieces of sushi. Also, they had very few ice buckets for the white wine. Our table and the tables around us who also requested a bucket were told sorry and given a glass of ice to add to the wine. Seriously??? What makes this experience even more disappointing is we have had nice dinners at Yellowtail in the past. We won't be back for Dine Out on Broadway. Obviously, they are not prepared to handle the additional customers.

Yelp
Upon arrival, you're greeted at the door with somewhat glum/moody attitude... It was so dull, I almost felt unwelcome. Bring your own bottle and WATER, the "filtered tap" in your presence at the bar is a bit of a turn off. Next we have the menu, which is rather large, so try and know what you want to eat before arriving because if it's busy your food will take 15 minutes to be served, During that time I wasn't checked on/reassured if I needed anything or told "sorry for the wait" the usual hospitality script. - The food itself was flavorful and well prepared, I have no complaints. Please note that some items on the menu can be cooked and some are labeled Raw (ASK). The ambiance gives.. cute little eatery, not the biggest place, but a nice after work/pre-night out spot. Overall: 6/10 and the 6 is strongly based solely on the food being great. The place would be a lot better reviewed if the customer service was more lively.

Yelp
Currently tied for my favorite sushi in Chicago. Not only are they hyper-aware of allergies (I'm allergic to sesame and peanut), their food is amazing. Beyond that, if I've ever ordered something for delivery that *might* contain sesame, they've called to make sure I was good with what I ordered. The service here is incredible, and I am absolutely a huge fan. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
I've been here many times and still have not had everything on the menu! Large menu and every single item is so tasty and fresh! Pricing is great too and service is quick!

Yelp
I tried Yellowtail for a date night and overall really enjoyed the food! The sushi was fresh and delicious, and I liked having the option to BYOB. The shu mai was a great appetizer. The restaurant was very popular, so service was a little slow initially, but once we got our order in we were served promptly. I'll be back here for sushi again!
google avatar

Michaela K.

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about this place!! It's great for any occasion. I recently went for my birthday dinner with my family and the whole group loved it. Amazing food!!! The sushi is so good along with the apps, noddle dishes, and the Kobe beef. It's BYOB so we of course get extra points for that. My family has a variety of sushi preferences and everyone was very happy!!!

Mary F.

Yelp
I grabbed some sushi to go and my oh my was it fabulous! The yellowtail roll was delicioso and I've been dreaming about it since. Next time, I'll dine in and BYOB.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were in town visiting friends for a long weekend. I've been to Chicago too many times to count but we always stay in Lakeview East - which is my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago. My friend and his GF were hyping up Yellowtail, so me and my boyfriend were excited to try. It's not a huge spot but very cozy and lofi which was the vibe we were looking for. You can also bring in a bottle wine for a small corking fee so got a bottle of wine from a bodega a block away. We started with the Edamame with garlic sauce and it was very good, the garlic added more of a pizazz which was soo good. I am not the biggest fan of sushi but my boyfriend is and he LOVED his roll. He ordered the spicy tuna roll and he said the tuna melted in his mouth, it was soo smooth. I ordered the Teriyaki Grilled Entree and it was really good. It came out on a sizzling skillet (like fajitas at a mexican restaurant). It was a great portion of food and since it was grilled it had amazon flavor. If you find yourself in Lakeview East, please go to Yellowtail - you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Brianna A.

Yelp
Love Yellowtail -- it's a Lakeview staple. Pretty great for GF diners as well (most of their staff is knowledgeable, I've had some experiences where they're less familiar) and they have tamari to replace soy sauce. Sushi is always fantastic and the ambiance is great!

Alexander A.

Yelp
The food here was super delicious. Definitely recommend the Rayu Maguro Maki and the Hatsu Hana Roll. Came in during a busy weekend but our table was still served pretty quick. Thank you Cherry for the amazing service! Can't wait to go back soon.
google avatar

Auston T.

Yelp
Good for an upscale sushi experience. You can bring your own drinks here as well if you feel so inclined. All the appetizers were great. We got edamame, chicken karaage and takoyaki. The takoyaki was interesting because the food "dances" when they first bring it to your table! Not sure how they pulled that off, but it was neat. The rolls themselves were of high quality. My only critique is that many of them are over-engineered. Sushi should generally be a simple food, where less does more - rolls with more than three or four ingredients often do a disservice to the natural flavors. Great spot overall!
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
A great place to take friends from out of town or a date! We didn't have a res but the three of us got seated right away outside. There are a few nice outdoor tables and the inside is pretty big. Inside sports a dimly lit bar restaurant with a wavy art projection on the wall creating moody ambiance. Two rolls is a good size but the chefs special chunkier rolls are pretty filling so you could stick with one. The plating was nicely arranged. The Crazy Dragon Roll was delicious and the different textures of crunch, fish, soft rice, and fried bits dance your mouth like a perfect symphony. I would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Leland L.

Yelp
Great sushi, great byob experience!! This was my first time at a BYOB restaurant and it is so enjoyable being able to drink what you brought rather than pay for something overpriced! Definitely enhances the experience. Note, there is a $3 bottle opening charge. We sat the the sushi bar and it was actually so enjoyable to see the rolls being made and the unique ones coming out. The setting here is classic and fun and they have some nice tables outside too. Our waitress was so nice and write down some of her favorite rolls that she recommended. We ended up getting and splitting the crazy dragon roll and Jiba Maki roll. Both were delicious! I loved the crunchy textures on the crazy dragon and the mango avocado exterior on the jiba maki was flavorful and unique.

Jim B.

Yelp
Excessively Loud, Noisy. The Food was a solid 5, but the atmosphere was so loud that rating should go into the negative zone. If you still want to go, BEWARE the tables with young women screaming. When they seat you, look around, and if you see an adjacent table of young women with a bunch of bottles of alcohol, ask to be seated somewhere else. We did not notice immediately and it was only as we ordered that the table next to us became explosively loud. The drink girls were literally out of control, to the point where they were screaming in laughter, while we could not hear our own conversation. We left immediately after finishing our food. This was simply unbearable.
google avatar

Dominik K.

Yelp
If you are looking for great sushi, look no further! Whichever roll we tried tasted great! What stood out besides the rolls were the Takoyaki and the salmon fried rice! Super delicious and we couldn't get enough of those! The ambience is also great, it's a darker setting with vibrant colorful jellyfish projected onto the wall. Not to forget, the service was excellent as well!
google avatar

Cheyenne G.

Yelp
This is such a lovely sushi spot centrally located on Lakeview. I was lucky enough to get a seat on the patio on a lovely Friday evening this summer. The wait staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. My water was always topped off, they offered a bucket for our BYOB wine, and made some great recommendations. All of the rolls I had were delicious, but the highlight of my meal was the nigiri fatty tuna. I still dream about it and will be back just for that fatty tuna. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
So so yummy! The pad Thai is such a generous portion I will have leftovers for days. Definitely will bring a bottle of wine next time I go and am eager to try their sushi. Nice night outside and server was nice!

Michael R.

Yelp
Save your time and money. Rude hosts, rude servers & mid sushi. It's also dirty as fuck especially the bathrooms.
google avatar

Charissa F.

Yelp
We went to this restaurant for a nice Valentine's dinner. Our server was SO kind. We had our first romantic date here years ago and since my boyfriend is on keto, we didn't know where to go for a romantic Valentine's dinner. We chose well! They have a great Keto/Low Carb menu and he was so grateful. I wish they
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
there's a giant projector in here that displays jellyfish so if u are afraid of that then sit outside. we tried the seaweed salad and it was good, I thought ab getting out of my chair to start singing! I even brought my own bottle of wine in, "Yellowtail Wine" which I thought was a pretty clever joke and a nod to the business itself
google avatar

Michel T.

Yelp
If I can summarize this with one word it should be "Fresh". That's all my taste buds want to remember...you must try! Yum!
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
Excellent food and doesn't miss a step. Tried their Wagyu special and it was simply so good. My kid always loved the ribeye skewers. Excellent food/service and will definitely be back.

Yelp
2/5/2024--I would go back for the ambiance alone, then you add great tasting food, and it's a no-brainer. My sister and I stumbled upon this place, looking for another restaurant to grab a quick bite to eat before catching a show at the Laugh Factory. We were seated immediately. It took some time before a server came to our table. Once we ordered, we noticed our server was busy, so throughout our dining experience, we had to ask other servers for assistance. Besides that hiccup, we enjoyed our dinner. Our food was served fast, fresh, and hot with all the flavors. By the time we left, the place was packed, but it didn't feel crowded, and it wasn't loud even with music playing. The lighting is nice. It was a touch too dark for me, but feasible. Houskeeping items: The bus staff was on point. You could barely lift your last piece of food off your plate, and they had already taken it away. Water was refilled before even reaching half a glass. When patrons left, tables were cleared, cleaned, and ready for the next guest within minutes. The restroom was clean as well. Parking is metered.

Jocelyn J.

Yelp
The service was awful, as soon I walked in I was appalled by the hostess who was really rude. "What do you want?" was her introduction, it really set the vibe for the restaurant as unwelcoming & unkind. The food was alright, it would have been better if she hadn't been so rude. Negative stars if I could.
google avatar

Emilee J.

Yelp
8/10 experience @ yellowtail for certain & an absolute must on your visit to Chicago accompanying a big group. BYOB makes the biggest difference on your bill at the end of the day & there are so many items to split and share across the table. We LOVED our rolls and ended up getting a gyoza (again) for our dessert. Besides the somewhat slow service, it was well worth the wait.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Excellent quality fish is the highlight of this popular Broadway sushi bar. The maki is great, but it's plates like yellowtail Carpaccio and Tuna Tartare that really let the fish shine through. Surpisingly, though, the very best thing we had came from the robata grill: two skewers each of chicken and shrimp. The proteins were great, but it was the bed of sauteed onions and jalapenos that really took this dish over the top. Service was friendly, and it's BYOB.

Jen B.

Yelp
Not a great experience. The tuna tartar seemed old and the scallop roll was stale. Very disappointed as this is one of my favorite spots
google avatar

Alanna Q.

Yelp
This spot is my friend's favorite spot in the area. The sushi is really good and reasonably priced. They have the simple rolls as well as unique chef crafted rolls. It's BYOB so it can be really fun to bring your own wine or beers with your friends or a first date!
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
I placed a takeout order from here and it was packaged with care. My spicy miso soup was wrapped in aluminum foil to keep it warm, and I was given togo shrimp and soy sauces in a separate baggy. It's the little things. My spicy miso soup was great! Not too spicy with a good amount of miso, tofu, and seaweed. I also got the spicy tuna crunch. The tuna was very fresh and everything was well-seasoned. However, I was expecting rice (the description was crispy rice) but I was biting into a crisp, hollow shell. Hence, I am giving a four star rating instead of five.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Best sushi spot in Lakeview - period!!!!! Great service, ambiance, and food. Must try is the truffle salmon nigiri! Our favorite spot.
google avatar

Nelly C.

Yelp
Order Beyond cold. Soft shell crab was breaded at least 2 days ago, in addition I asked for octopus plate they sent one rim. Rangoon is stale as well. Total cost 38.65 Save your money !
google avatar

Yelp
It's not often that you find a sushi place in the Midwest that is affordable with high quality fish. I was impressed with Yellowtail, and I would like to return soon. My friend and I split the combo sashimi dinner and the assorted sashimi dinner. They were both fantastic. The assorted sashimi dinner is the chef's choice, it includes sweet shrimp, yellowtail, and fried shrimp head, in addition to the usual suspects. The combo had 4 pieces each of tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. The fish was all extremely fresh. It also included choice of miso soup or "spicy" miso soup (*raises eyebrow* ...it's fine.). The ambience is that of an upscale sushi bar. People were dressed pretty casual, but this is certainly a place that I believe warrants a shirt with a collar. We ended up walking here, but it's the usual Lakeview metered street parking. It's on a busy street with a lot of restaurants and shops, so I imagine when it's peak dinner hours, finding a good spot might be a challenge.
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
Really vibey spot and so many good rolls to choose from! Also had a low carb/no rice section of rolls which is nice if you are trying to watch the carbs.
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
Ordered carry out from Yellowtail and it hit the spot! This restaurant came highly recommended to me so I was excited to try. The sushi is pretty fairly priced considering quality and freshness. The seaweed salad is a must for any sushi restaurant I go to, and this one didn't disappoint. The fire dragon role was... fire. Loved the tempura crunch and tobiko on top of the roll.
google avatar

Rosie V.

Yelp
I wish I had come here sooner. I consider myself a total sushi snob and know some good sushi options in Chicago but how I missed this until now is crazy. Came here for my birthday with my husband yesterday and we had a wonderful time. Beautiful atmosphere (they have a cute visual screen in the back with jellyfish), candlelight, all while still be welcoming and approachable. Very friendly staff. I truly believe you can tell the quality of a sushi restaurant and fish by their nigiri. Every single piece we ordered was delicious. Definitely recommend their nigiri sampler appetizer - pieces of nigiri with delicious toppings like ginger/scallion and chili. We also treated ourselves to the truffle salmon that was just divine. Their spicy tuna roll actually has big pieces of tuna and isnt hiddin with tempura or a ton of mayo like other cheap sushi places do. We really enjoyed their Hatsu Hana roll as well - so fresh! For apps we had their chicken garage (super yummy with wasabi dipping sauce!) And the yellowtail carpaccio. Can't wait to start making this my go-to sushi place for dine -in and delivery!!!!
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
LOVEEEEED yellowtail. Definitely a little on the pricey side but my favorite sushi I've had in Chicago. The rolls were fresh and yummy and the fried rice I had for leftovers for a few days after.

Yelp
I loved trying this spot! It has a cozy, cool feel nestled in on Broadway among a bunch of other restaurants. The hostess sat us right away with our reservation, and our waitress was friendly and inviting. We started with the edamame which was solid, and since it's BYOB, we brought our own bottle of wine which they supplied an ice bucket for. I ended up getting the spicy tuna crunch roll and the dragon roll--both were delicious!!! It did take fairly long for the sushi to come out, but they had a full house so it made sense. Overall, I was very impressed with the food, service and atmosphere, and I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The overall vibe at Yellowtail is amazing. They play very good music that doesn't over power the conversation and the layout / decor is top notch as well. This makes it a versatile restaurant, so whether you are entertaining a party or going on an intimate date, it is a good option. The food here is five stars no doubt. As far as apps go, you cannot go wrong with the Gyoza or Salmon Pouches, but do not fill up on them! For entrees / rolls I highly recommend trying the sushi rolls because they are both tasty and fairly priced (which is hard to come by now a days). Additionally, their miso soup is top notch and only $3. Additionally, the service here is great. On a less busy night, walk ins are welcome and be sure to ask your server whats good on the menu because they are always helpful!
