Best Ethiopian Restaurants in D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"This casual staple pleases Falls Church’s thriving Ethiopian scene with a menu full of vegan and halal options. Yeshi Kitfo naturally specializes in its namesake kitfo, made with raw ground beef and flavored with mitmita (a reddish-orange mixture of hot chile peppers). Other top sellers include gomen kitfo, firfir, and aromatic shekla tibs. Order delivery online." - Tierney Plumb

My mom, grandmother, and I went here for a late lunch and it was great- delicious food (and good vegetarian options!) and lots of it for the price. Our waitress was really helpful in helping us narrow down what to get, too!

Recently, my friends and I came by Yeshi Kitfo in Virginia. As we were out the night before hanging out late, we looked forward to a great Ethiopian restaurant for a RECOVERY. Convincingly, we all agreed to stop by our favorite restaurant Yeshi Kitfo and it was NO disappointment. Everything was delicious and satisfying. We ordered 6-7 dishes from meat to vegetarian and all were phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant for friends and family! Great food and customer service!

I ordered the special kitfo from Yeshi Kitfo, which clearly comes with gomen and ayib. The kitfo and gomen arrived, but the ayib (a key part of the dish) was completely missing—no substitute, no explanation. I called the restaurant to ask what happened, and the response was a casual “oh sorry,” followed by a giggle, which made it clear they didn’t take it seriously at all. If you're paying for a full traditional Ethiopian meal, you should get what you paid for. I expected better service and accountability, especially for a place that claims to specialize in this cuisine. I won’t be ordering from here again—and if you care about getting a full, authentic kitfo experience, you may want to look elsewhere too. I am an ethiopian I know very well what good ethiopian food is as well as good customer service..

They have this warm cozy ambiance with a fake fireplace. When they do the coffee ceremony, you can smell incense. They have a shared parking lot. It’s fairly quiet in here if you want an intimate dinner. We got the Shiro (Chickpea powder soup) Veggie Combo BK Tibs Yeshi Salad 🥗 Derek Tibs Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. The injera was spicy but I couldn’t even handle the salad so that says how weak I’m. The Ethiopian coffee ceremony so interesting to see. How they roast the beans to get this rich taste and we drank it after our meal. If you’re wanting to try authentic Ethiopian food, come here! The service was bit slow but we did have 10 people basically ordering the entire menu and made it a feast. Maybe just little bit more lighting near the bathroom and have it stocked. Also, have an open sign out front so people on the street can see

Google
offers fantastic food and a wonderful atmosphere. The BK-Tibes was delicious, and the staff was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend for a great dining experience. Can't wait to return!

Oh my gosh, if you haven't been to Yeshi Kitfo yet, you’re totally missing out! This place feels like a flavor party just waiting for you to join in. The moment I walked in, I was hit with those cozy vibes that reminded me of family gatherings back in Ethiopia, where laughter and good food were always the main event! Now, let’s talk about the kitfo—it's pure deliciousness! It’s so tasty and seasoned just right, making my taste buds do a happy dance. Just like the meals my family used to make, every bite feels like a warm hug for your tummy. Paired with soft injera and creamy cottage cheese and the GOMEN, it’s a nostalgic taste of home that brings back those cherished childhood memories. The fun doesn’t stop there! Whether you’re all about the meat or prefer veggies, there’s a dish for everyone. I love gathering with friends and family here to dive into the spread, reminiscing about the flavors of home. Plus, the staff is super friendly and always ready to help you pick the perfect dish AND telling you what each dish is made of, making you feel like part of their family, too. Trust me, once you go, you’ll be planning your next visit in no time! This place isn’t just about the food; it’s about the love, the memories, and the feeling of family!

Yelp
The food was wonderful! Excellent flavor!! The special Kitfo is awesome and they have a light teff enjera that's really nice. They serve it with traditional cheese, spinach and a small mix of both that by far the best option. Their Awaze tibs is also yummy! The atmosphere is midday cafe, large comfy booths, rustic but chic hanging fixtures, on a tree trunks with rope, a little incense burning in background, lots of natural sunlight. Great place to work for lunch or go for dinner. They have a bar and TVs around the pale yellow walls with vaulted ceilings and lots of greenery! Great calming energy The pic below is what was left of our Awaze tibs because it was too good, we devoured it! Do come here and don't forget to order their traditional tea steeped with cardamom, ginger and other spices!

Yelp
The worst Ethiopian place as we are known for being generous. At Yeshi, you get 2 small spoonfuls of food floating sadly in the container. Ain't that good to justify the scarcity. They will give you 2 spoon of food for $22. Meanwhile, Meda Restaurant packs it sooo full it oozes and that is Ethiopian generosity.

Yelp
I picked up gomen besega and kito from this restaurant. I got home and took first bite of Gomen and I almost threw up on the plate. The gomen was spoiled and had urine smell. I ordered raw kitfo but they gave me cooked to mask the freshness of the meat. The meat texture was mushy and I'm sure they used food processor to cut down the meat. I immediately called the restaurant and offered to bring it back to get a refund. The owner told me to trash the food and he would refund via zelle. Its been 4 days and I still haven't received rhe refund. I'm reporting to Virginia health administration to conduct inspection. Someone is going to get badly at this restaurant if something is not done soon

Yelp
I do have to say that this is such a cute place! Love the decor!! It's giving you can stay here as long as you want vibe. Service was not that exciting but the ambiance is cool and the food was really good! My friend ordered the Kitfo and wait it was the best he's ever had in the US. He came from Ethiopia not too long ago. That's a huuuge complement! I got the BK tibs which was so tender and juicy! We both had plenty of leftover and we're pretty satisfied!

Yelp
Fantastic spot for Ethiopian food in the nova area! This place came recommended from an Ethiopian friend who said this was the best in the area. We ordered the special Kitfo to share which came with two different types of Kitfo, chickpeas, mixed vegetables, okra, and injera. The kitfo can be ordered cooked if requested, we opted to go the traditional route and have it raw. Everything was super well seasoned and tasty, the portions were decent and we had leftovers to take home. As you are supposed to eat with your hands, they did not give utensils rather you eat with the injera acting as a wrap. The staff were all so kind and checked up on us frequently - asking me if I was enjoying the food and offering me alternatives as they knew it was my first time eating Ethiopian food!

Yelp
First time trying the food here. One of the best Ethiopian restaurants in the DMV area. Deliciouso!

Yelp
Yeshi kitfo is now easily my favorite habesha restaurant in the DMV as an Ethiopian native! I'm photo is Shekila Tibs and Bk Tibs with a side of Misir - our go to favorites here in addition to Yeshi Kitfo! A side do Awaze sauce great with tibes. Great ambiance, delicious and authentic food my habesha family loves and the owner is always so kind to all guests. End meal with traditional spice tea

Yelp
Great ambiance and friendly staff. This is a place to come if you haven't been to an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurants before and it looks catered towards international or "hip" crowd rather than Ethiopian diaspora, and if you are on a date probably 3rd or 4th because there are no candles :-), one of the best ambiances I have seen in an Ethiopian restaurant. Food is great (I had it togo, so not many pictures) but I liked how they gave aluminum container so you can heat it in an oven and it's also less wasteful than styrofoam.

Yoseph C.

Yelp
The best food I never seen & US based customer service . All the waiters specially Selam provides awesome customer service. please plan to visit this bar and restaurant.

Vandana A.

Yelp
Very sweet staff, took time to explain the meals and ingredients for those in the group who never ate Ethopian. Great place, music at the right level and food was great.

Yelp
Ethiopian Cuisine New location Social media had good words to say about Yeshi Kitfo and it has not disappointed. Decor with aesthetically placed lighting and wine shelf.. and a Yeshi Kitfo neon sign next next to the carry out register and kitchen.

Yelp
I love the vibe in this restaurant. Very nice and modern interior decoration. I came here often and like bringing my friends here because it is close to where I live. Perfect place to treat friends and family. The food is delicious too.

Yelp
the food at Yeshi Kitfo is amazing, the servers are super friendly. I'll definitely be going there often.

Yelp
I'm not one to ever criticize an establishment but Yeshi Kitfo has to be one of the worst Ethiopian restaurants I've ever ate at. The food quality is really poor and the prices are high for such poor quality food. They also use an unnecessary amount of oil in the tibs to substitute the small amount of meat that comes with the entree. This is also the 3rd time I've eaten at Yeshi and it's been bad each time so it's not a one time occurrence.
google avatar

Ashenafi M.

Yelp
Service is terrible. The server yelled at me for asking a question it wasn't even that busy

Hsini R.

Yelp
Fantastic decor and ambience. There's wine, a bar, and others were ordering coffee and tea. Recommend kitfo or tibs dish with veggie platter (the only veggie option on menu). It's a lot of food, delicious and enough to feed a family of six. We (4top) ordered special kitfo, awaze tibs, and the veggie combo. Our take-home bag is another entire meal!

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant 4-5 times. The food is good, with very flavorful dishes, however, the last time I went there I ordered my usual two dishes priced at $19.99 each. When the bill came one dish was $21.99 and the other $24.95. When I asked about the prices I was told that if I paid cash they would honor the $19.99 price, but if I paid with a credit card the prices were higher. There is no mention of that anywhere and how would they know my method of payment ahead of time? That left me with a bad taste and a huge disappoitment.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Everyone loved the food. The staff were super friendly. And the decor looked really nice. Do yourself a favor and give this place a shot. Will definitely return.

Tea C.

Yelp
let me be frank about this place. 1-The serving portions are extremely small, unusual for an Ethiopian serving size. 2-The price is not worthy of the serving portions and the quality of the food. For tiny Ethiopian flat bread--Enjera with 1 spatula servings of meat the price is $30 dollars. 3--So if you want to save time and money and a huge disappointment try TSEDAY ABEBE or ENAT or some place else and you will be served with quality Ethiopian food and appropriate serving size for your money. 4-The only thing I have seen good about this place is the walls are laminated wood and looks nice otherwise this place is far from serving authentic Ethiopian food. There are plenty of nice, clean, with fair price restaurants in the skyline area that serve authentic Ethiopian food.

Yelp
I want to give this place zero stars these idiots served me waterdown shiro that had no flavor when they could simply say we do not know how to make it. Not all customers are easily impressed with meat dishes.

Mikael M.

Yelp
Always great service. Most authentic Kitfo in the DMV. Can't go wrong with the Yeshi tibs I remember thinking the only thing this is missing is Godin tibs and now it's here. Price is a little more expensive than other places but it's definitely worth. Remember there is a reason why things are little more expensive. Time and effort is really put into the dishes. The door dash potions are a little small. To get the full experience go straight to the restaurant and eat there. As gash Mahmoud would say Abet Abet Abet Abet side joke for the OG's

Yelp
Yesterday, 10/28/2021, I wonder why some one packed my left over food with a foil pan! How can I warm my food in a Micro wave? Need to correct that next time...ok?

DE T.

Yelp
Awesome service. Delicious food and great service. Unlike other Ethiopian Restaurants, the server constantly checked to see what we needed . I hope they will provide the same service and attention to the customers when they will be busy and crowded. We shall see.

Yelp
I used Uber eats to order food. They didn't send what I asked. They claim they did not see my order and argued with me when I called. I ordered what it was recommended by other people and they food wasn't good either. Not great place. Won't be ordering from them again. Not a good place for food or for customer service.

Worku S.

Yelp
It's a horrible experience when it comes the way they charge. The so called manager was of no assistance. Advice no one to eat there unless you have to throw for nothing. The girls serving are so nice and very helpful.

Melat A.

Yelp
Food was great! One of the best kitfos I've had in the States. Tibs was really good too. Everything was fresh. Customer service was good even with how busy it was, but if you need something I suggest flagging your waiter down or it might be awhile before they come and check on you. All in all, I'll be coming back. Hopefully they will have kocho the next time!

Shif D.

Yelp
The food is great very pricey complement to the chef who sweat in the kitchen. What a disappointing experience last week with the duty manger a very arrogant personality his attitude will never invite me back. "Attitude determines your altitude" what it matters, quite sure he is destroying the business. The young ladies who were serving so amazing very polite, and respectful, didn't want to take their credit and really appreciated. In DMV area enormous Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants serves with respect and honor. In my nature i don't like complaining defiantly wouldn't recommend Yeshi Kitfo to anyone. Hope this note will help the manger to adjust his attitude how to approach his customers in order to retain the business, words to mouth the crucial advertising for free, could favor you or hurt you.

Melena T.

Yelp
The food was great. I had the beef tibs, the Kitfo, and the avocado salad. I will definitely come back to dine here. The service was also pretty decent considering how packed the place was inside.

Kiya 1.

Yelp
wore service, overpriced food even not deserving for the test hygienic service 0 over all they don't deserve to service giver .

Lauren F.

Yelp
The restaurant had no vegetarian food even though it was listed on their menu and we called ahead of time and asked if they had vegetarian food.

Yelp
Best kitfo in town. The vibe and service is unmatchable. I'm usually one of those folks that don't write reviews but this is worth writing. I Highly recommend this place 10/10

Dori G.

Yelp
Owner was very rude and disrespectful. Price was outrageous. I would never go back unless I have money to throw.

Gabby S.

Yelp
Their kitfo might be good but their politics isn't. The owner told me he doesn'r like Amhara or Oromo. Never again.
