NYC New Restaurant Openings, February 2024 | Eater NY

"I checked out YGF Malatang, the Chinese chain’s first New York location, where the malatang format has customers pick ingredients and pay by weight (about $15 per pound); the chain has thousands of locations across Asia and drew an Eater first look this week." - Emma Orlow

Enjoying a hot bowl of soup on a chilly New York evening — perfect comfort food! With so many fresh ingredients to choose from, it’s a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Asian flavors. The staff were warm and attentive, making the experience even more delightful.

Google
Wonderful service and fast hot noodle soup! Their cucumber salad also mellow out the spiciness of the broth. If you're not into spicy, don't sleep on the fish more soup. It is not spicy and authentically delicious!

Google
For an old white guy it was great! After figuring out how to make my own order it was a breeze. Nice fresh ingredients. Sitting down to wait on order with a pager. They must have felt sorry for me, they brought my order to me. That’s great service. And the food was delicious. Mild to moderately spicy. Plus I did great with chopsticks!

Google
Whenever I don’t know what to eat, I come here! It’s the perfect lunch spot for busy office workers — quick, satisfying, and always hits the spot. The ingredients are fresh and well-balanced, with a great variety of proteins and veggies to choose from. Whether it’s the spicy hotpot or dry stir-fry, it’s consistently delicious and comforting. Highly recommend for anyone working nearby! 🍜🥦💼💕

Google
One of few places in the city for per pound malatang. Service was quick and lots of seating. Decent vegetarian options and broth/base selections. The dry mix is not very spicy (even the most 🌶️ one) some of the sauce bowls seemed cleaner than others. Seems less oily (healthier?) than some other spots I’ve been to but flavour was also less delicious imo. Not sure if I will be back

Google
Waited over 20 mins for my take out, all dine in orders were made first for some reasons. They also raised their price to 16.99 per pound which became not so cheap, ordering 1.6 pounds costed me $30 something. Tables, bowls, and tongs were all really greasy. No service at all but default tip at 18%? Don’t know what’s going on but the employees all had a very annoyed look on their face. Also having employees that don’t speak English in a store in manhattan just sounds crazy to me. I asked a girl with glasses about how long my order is going to take and I couldn’t understand a single word she said, really bad attitude. They do have many 5 star review because you can get a free soda if you post one. Despite all that, what made me completely disappointed at last was finding a piece of hair in my food. This is just disgusting… Would never come back and wouldn’t recommend to anyone else

Google
Tried YGF Malatang and really enjoyed it! The broth was flavorful, the ingredients were fresh, and everything came out super quick. It’s a great spot if you’re craving something comforting but don’t want to wait long. Definitely a place I’d come back to when I’m in the mood for malatang

Parvina B.

Google
You have had a chance to visit other locations before and the overall experience was outstanding! This particular location has not left any positive impressions, food was ooooooook, place was not very clean, restroom was dirty and even lacked the paper! Will not come back! Wish them to do a better job!

Yelp
really good Malayan food. I like the food and the yogurt is good too. I also like the environment

Yelp
Great food with a lot of options of different ingredients, very fast and friendly service

Yelp
This was my first time going to a food establishment like this where they cook the hot pot/dry pot for you and it's all done by weight. When I got there, there was no line although it looked like they were set up expecting to have a big line The selections that you could put in your dish we're pretty vast lots of seafood meats, noodles, vegetables, fish balls, all the things that I love. I was really in the mood for a nice mala dry pot and they delivered just that I got mushrooms, some vermicelli noodles, beef slices, calamari, and they cooked it all very well. There was also a mini sauce station with a few options to dress up your dry pot or hot pot. The service was great. It was my first time there so they helped guiding me through the process. They were plenty of tables to sit in and wait for your food they give you a buzzer to know when it was ready. The space was nice and clean. And there was plenty of seating for the time that I was there. I ended up getting a little under a pound of food and it was plenty for me to eat that day with a bit of a leftover for the next day that heated up perfectly. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area!

Yelp
Why did it take me so long to try YGF? This place is a gem! The restaurant is spacious, clean, and incredibly well-organized. I was impressed by the wide selection of fresh vegetables, proteins, and carbs -- all customizable with your choice of soup or dry base for $16.99/lb. It's easy to get carried away with so many delicious options! My bowl came out to exactly a pound, and it was totally worth it. Flavorful, satisfying, and fun to build -- I'm definitely coming back for more!
google avatar

Tracy T.

Yelp
I ordered dry pot and it just didn't have enough mala flavor. Not sure I would come back for dry pot, maybe for their malatang. There are lots of seats though and they have kiosks to order other menu items.
google avatar

Haley H.

Yelp
These ham soup dumplings were SO good. They also came out fast and fresh I just wish you got more than 4 for $8
google avatar

Damian X.

Yelp
A decent spot for quick hotpot, but definitely has room for improvement. Ambience (2/5): The place didn't feel that clean; tables and sauce station could use better upkeep. Food (3/5): The broth and toppings were fine but nothing standout -- flavors felt a bit muted compared to other mala tang spots Value (3/5): Slightly expensive for the portion size, especially since the quality doesn't fully match the price.

Yelp
Super clean and great place for a meal! The staff were very nice and the food was great, definitely would come back!

Yelp
Finally had the chance to try this chain of mala tang restaurants (I think there are a few locations in NYC already). As usual the ingredients are all self-serve, and I was impressed with the variety of different veggies, noodles, fish balls, and meats that they offered. It was a pleasant surprise how yummy the meats were in particular. There are a few choices of broths to get -- I was able to try the beef bone broth 經典骨湯 and the fish maw & chicken 花膠雞湯. Both were delicious. I loved the rich aroma of the bone broth, and I thought the fish/chicken soup base added nice depth to the meats. Price point is great ($15.99/lb) -- I got around 1.1 pounds which was a perfect amount of food.  Very happy I had the chance to stop by and will definitely try to come back soon!

Yelp
YGF is one of my favorite restaurants. Our favorite is back home in Atlanta. So when I found a location near our hotel, I was exited to try it out! My first impression wasn't good! The food area had not been cleaned or tidied! I've visited a few of these chain restaurants and this one by far was the dirtiest! I could understand if the place was packed or if it was around lunch time. But that wasn't the case. I noticed a few young men just standing around talking or on their phones as if they had nothing to do! My husband and I made our bowls and received our food quickly. I wasn't impressed with the flavor of the soup base. It tasted a bit watered down. I had to add seasonings to it.. Unfortunately I can't recommend this place! I'm sure there are better options on the area.

Irum H.

Yelp
Beef bone broth is amazing and topping selections are amazing! Service is amazing:) Sauce bar is also very well organized

Teresa T.

Yelp
Clean, comfortable space with a welcoming vibe that makes you want to stay and enjoy your meal. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making the whole experience feel easy and relaxed. Great spot for malatang when you want good food and great selection of toppings

Yelp
This location was very big and spacious - there was no problem getting a seat around 6PM and it's a self serve setup. There were lots of ingredients to choose from for the malatang which I appreciated, but unfortunately the meal did not come with a bowl of rice. Be sure to get enough noodles in your ingredients bowl! There was a deal to get a $2.99 drink or dessert/appetizer with an order of $20 and over so my partner and I were able to get 2 things extra which was great. My partner ordered the fish maw broth and I ordered the exrra spicy pork bone broth - note that if you enjoy spice, extra spicy is not killer spicy but still savory. I personally enjoyed the spicy broth over fish maw! Staff were overall friendly and service was quick. While I wish the meal came with rice, overall it fulfilled our spice craving. I would definitely stop by if I have a craving again and I'm in the area!

Yelp
Exceeded expectations! It's pretty much a self-serve place (think buffet style). You grab a bowl + tong and then go pick up whatever food you like. They have most of the usual food you expect for a hot pot and a decent variety of protein - lamb, pork, beef, fish etc. I got the herbal bone beef broth, and the soup was pretty flavorful. Would definitely want to try the tomato broth next time! They also do give out free water which is much appreciated. But can easily be missed if not specifically paying attention to the water fountain

Yelp
Manhattan, NY (midtown west) - this weather is perfect for a hot bowl of soup, and YGF malatang is just what I crave. It's like a hot pot, but cooked for you. This is the second location in NYC (the first is in the East Village) and opened in September 2024. Pick up a large bowl and tongs, select the items you want for your soup from a long station of ingredients ($15.99/lb), choose a soup base or the sesame paste sauce, spice level, and they'll buzz you when your order is ready. The Ingredients are good and fresh, with pretty much everything you'd want. My favorite is the classic herbal beef bone broth, extra spicy. The mala chili flavor is on point. There is a separate area where you can order Ling Long soup dumplings and a few other dim sum dishes from a self-serve kiosk - the xiaolongbao is quite good! They are are even available in different flavors like truffle, crab meat, shrimp, chicken, salted egg, iberico ham, and spinach mushroom. It's all very quick and easy, and the space is clean. The staff are nice and cool, and the music is hip. Now if they can just add dry pot and boba tea too, I'd be here all the time!

Yelp
Great service and a lot of seating as well. Love the options that they have to choose from. Always a good option for a cold day.
google avatar

Fanglin Q.

Yelp
Love it! We can pick up whatever we like, various vegetables and meats, choose different broths or dry pot. As a spicy person, I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
I loveeee this place - it's so good for the price and I always come back here. the ingredients seem fresh and the meat is good quality as well. both the dry pot as well as the soups are good and nothing too spicy for the mild! much cheaper than other malatang places.

Yelp
First time having malatang and it hit the spottttt after a night out. Came upon opening on a Sunday morning and it was empty. Clean Grabbed a clean bowl and tongs, fresh out the dishwasher, and picked out a selection of veggies, mushrooms, and meats. Because it's weight based, meats are more bang for your buck than denser choices, like fishballs. Came out to $15 worth of food which was more than enough for me. There's also an included sauce bar with a wide variety (peanut sauce, green onion, chili oils) and a self-serve water station. Got the bone broth at very spicy. Maybe not the best choice for my first meal of the day, but it's not numbing like I expected, and definitely not as spicy as I'd like. Still yummy tho, and I'd def come back
google avatar

Kailyn L.

Yelp
This is a quick casual place if you are craving some Malatang, or Chinese spicy numbing hotpot. After walking in, you get a bowl and can add whatever ingredients you'd like. There's a variety of fresh ingredients to choose from, including vegetables, frozen fish balls, seafood, and various cuts of meats. I tried the beef bone broth, which was super flavorful. You can adjust the spiciness level according to your liking. The service is quick and the inside is clean.
google avatar

Joanne H.

Yelp
I had higher hopes going into this restaurant. Not as clean and trendy as I would hope. Service was okay. Not much of interaction with staff. There was no wait, got our food pretty fast after going through the buffet, get weighed and paid

Marissa D.

Yelp
so good love it much! so fun to customize your own bowl! Chicken deumplings were great!

Laurel S.

Yelp
Yang Guo Ma La Tang is the kind of spot that makes you feel like you've stumbled onto a local secret. You grab a tray, load it up with whatever looks good -- tofu skin, lotus root, glass noodles, bok choy, beef, fish balls -- and they cook it all up in the most perfectly balanced mala broth. The spice level actually tastes like Sichuan spice should: numbing, flavorful, and layered, not just heat for the sake of heat. The broth has depth, the ingredients are fresh, and the portions are generous. I love that you can completely customize everything -- it's just as easy to make it vegan as it is to go full carnivore. Bonus points for the sesame sauce bar and how fast everything comes out. The vibe is casual, clean, and lively -- perfect for a cozy solo meal or a quick dinner with friends. If you love hot pot or are just curious about mala tang, this place is a must.

Yelp
Loved the selection and food options here! Really delicious diy hot pot and plenty of seating. Thank u for a great experience

Yelp
One of the best YGF I've been to. The ingredients are super fresh and service really good.

Yelp
love this place! my new go-to when i'm in the area. very vegetarian friendly - the tomato soup base is vegetarian and there are many options to put into your bowl. wanted to try this place after seeing posts about it on social media from canada or australia and i was so excited when it was announced to be opening in new york!! even more excited now for the flushing location to open. it's like AYCE but you pay based on the weight. you put whatever you want into a bowl and they cook it for you, made to order. it reminds me of some food court stalls i've tried in asia. they also sell drinks and have a free sauce bar, but the broth was so flavorful that i didn't need to use the sauce i made. perfect place to eat with friends or even dine solo. very fast casual ambiance. my friend got the extra spicy mala dry pot but said it wasn't that spicy!
google avatar

Dayo E.

Yelp
Malatang definitely can scratch an itch for Szechuan food that's reasonably priced and easily customizable. I love the concept of creating your own plate packed with everything you want in it and nothing more or less. I imagine everyone's first time is either too little on the tentative side or too much on the "I gotta try everything" side. I was definitely the latter but still enjoyed my meal. The interior looks as one would expect with sections got groups to eat there. You line up with your bowl and select your meats and vegetables and then hand that over to be prepared according to the style you want. I went with the Mala dry pot. The meat quality is good enough for what it is but my biggest drawback is that it wasn't spicy enough. We got the super spicy and it barely registered for me which was quite disappointing. I'm hoping to go back and update my review if I'm able to get a spicier level for sure.

Pete X.

Yelp
clean and fresh! Best MLT in town! Friendly service and good atmosphere. Like this go to spot in midtown for work lunch
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
YGF Malatang is a one-of-kind hotpot where you pick your own ingredients and they heat it up for you in a large bowl with mala spices! They have a wide selection of ingredients. I had their recommended herbal and beef bone broth, and the spice level was just perfect. It gives food court vibes and it's spacious and clean. I like how easy and convenient they make hotpot to be if you're just going for a quick meal.
google avatar

Kellie C.

Yelp
The ingredients seem fresh and the price is fair. My only complaint is that their ingredients bar could be more extensive. I found the options to be limited compared to other Malatang restaurants I've tried. I went on a Friday at noon and it was decently busy. I had to wait for a table because it was either taken or not yet bussed. Great place for a solo meal as well.
google avatar

Aronne J.

Yelp
YGF Malatang never misses.. fresh ingredients, rich broth, and the perfect spicy kick every time. You pick your own mix, and they cook it to perfection in minutes
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
I ordered lunch from YGF Malatang, and it was such a comforting meal. I chose the classic herbal beef bone broth with medium spice, but I found it a bit too mild for my taste--next time, I'll go for the HOT/extra spicy. My bowl was loaded with beef slices, lobster balls, crab sticks, and mushrooms, and it was absolutely delicious. The broth was incredibly rich and flavorful, hands down one of the best soup base I've ever had. Plus, the price was very reasonable, making it even better! It was fulfilling. :)
google avatar

Lizzie E.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED this place! We were on the hunt for ramen, we happen to walk past this one. We were thrilled to see you had the option to build your own bowl. It was delicious, the dumplings were also amazing! The workers were great, along with the cleanliness!
google avatar

Tansy W.

Yelp
Updating to 2 stars. Got very bad food poisoning afterwards and this was the only thing I ate all day. Beware!
google avatar

Wes D.

Yelp
This convenient hotpot place is great if you want to pick your own ingredients, pick your broth and then have it ready within a few minutes. Condiments available to customize when you pick up. It's priced by the pound on ingredients. Conveniently located in midtown and a lot of seating of you want to eat in but also set up for to go. Theres also a separate kiosk if you want soup dumplings.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
I love malatang and came here with high expectations. I was also bringing a friend who was having their first malatang experience. Pretty similar to other malatang places, you grab the big bowl and tongs and fill it up with your meat and veggies and carbs. They have a good selection of everything and it all looked fresh. I saw them switching out old portions of ingredients for new portions which was good. They weigh it for you at the front and it's $14.99/lb which is similar to other places I've been to. They have 3 broth selections and a stir fry option too I think? I didn't check since I don't like dry pot. I got the beef broth which has a mild spice option so I got that. The food came out quick and hot. They have a sauce bar too where you customize your dipping sauce. There's a lot of seating inside! I heard it gets really crowded at lunch time but at dinner time, there was plenty of seats to choose from. They also have a dumpling stand inside but we didn't order anything from there. Overall, we were satisfied with our meal and very full and happy. The broth is extremely flavorful and I didn't even feel the need to use a dipping sauce. I'll probably try the chicken and fish maw broth next time.
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
YGF has the best bone broth in the (relatively new to NYC) self-service-by weight hotpot category of restaurants. Glad they opened another location in addition to the East Village one. It's actually more convenient for me to get to Zhangliang Malatang but YGF is the superior one for me.
google avatar

Megan U.

Yelp
YGF has become one of my go to places. Great place to grab food especially in the cold winter. Easy to find seating as it's a quick and casual place. You grab the ingredients you want in your pot and you pay based on weight (minimum 0.8 oz) and you choose a broth for your food to be cooked in. My personal favorite is the fish maw broth but a lot of my friends like the spicy classic beef bone broth. Come Again? Yes! I've already been multiple times within the last few months.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Went back a second time and tried their dumplings and cucumber salad. They were both excellent! Super flavorful and filling. Will continue to recommend and come back when I'm in Manhattan for work.
google avatar

Erin Y.

Yelp
fun to choose your own food. starts with veggies ends with meats. there's also a dry base ! mild and spicy options
google avatar

Sallie D.

Yelp
Quick "pick your own ingredients" Chinese hotpot place. They weigh then cook for you in the back. Ingredients are generally fresh (wasn't a fan of the chicken) with lots of veggie choices. Sauce bar lets you put together your own dipping sauce. Cleaner than the East village location which always had flies buzzing around when I visited. Reasonably priced.
google avatar

Calla Y.

Yelp
very clean and plenty of seating! excited to try my beef broth and sauce bar. it is a bit pricey in my opinion but i like the variety of toppings
google avatar

Farrah B.

Yelp
I came here for the dumpling shop that situated in the front of this restaurant and it's really interesting how it functions. You usually order from a kiosk for the dumplings. But during my visit I ended up dealing with both this back restaurant and the front. I got the veggie soup.Dumplings, which were mostly just spinach stuffed in with the little season.I wish it had more soup because it was actually pretty flavourful.I also tried this shrimp dumplings.Which was more like a hargau with some type of vocabulary on top. Not bad but a little undercooked. There was some type of Spring roll. That supposedly had scallops and egg inside. It looked more like seaweed and some type of ground pork (i specifically asked for selections with no pork). I couldn't take the risk of eating it simply because i'm allergic. The concept of the fill your bowl, they cook it up for you is really great, but the thing that turned me off was the sanitation. Many of the employees were coughing, no covering of their mouths or masks . No one washed their hands and the guy taken out the garbage and collecting and cleaning tables went straight to the area to pack up steam dumplings with just some gloves he put on. Dude! That's not sanitary or safe.

Yelp
This is a very popular chain in China but didn't get to try it when I was there. The set up here is simple. When you walk in, there are two iPads to order dumplings or baos. If you don't want that, you move past the iPads and grab a bowl and tongs. Almost like a buffet line, you grab the items that you want into your bowl. We got lobster balls, lamb, bok choy, knife cut noodles, spam, the list goes on. When you get to the end, a cashier weighs your food. You tell them which one of the four soup bases and they take your bowl of ingredients to the back. We got the tomato and chicken (non-spicy) but I am very interested in coming back and trying the beef and sesame. Flavor is very good and the two bowls we got were about $40. This will vary based on how many ingredients you put in your bowl. In terms of the ambiance, it feels like the typical noodle shop that you would find in China, which isn't that surprisingly given that YGF is a chain there.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Food and service was top tier! Definitely worth coming with your friends for a quick stop. The process is fast and easy, and the staff is friendly. 10/10 recommend

Kevin N.

Yelp
Food and service was excellent and food was delicious and good vibes. Thank for the experience

Yelp
Awesome place for mala lunch! Me and my coworkers loved this place. Thank you so much

Geoffrey N.

Yelp
This wasn't what I expected. The staff is extremely friendly and the restaurant is very clean. I ordered a lunch and was a bit disappointed. I had a few things like noodles, fishballs, and veggies. The bowl they have was deceiving. I thought "wow, hotpot for lunch and such a big bowl!". Opened the bowl and it was 1/4 full. Then I looked at their site and it all made sense. If you go in person, they charge by the pound. When you order online, it's a set price. So they give you the takeout and adjust the portion based on the set price they charge. Weird way to charge for hotpot but I guess it has to be this way if you're in midtown. Hotpot is supposed to be affordable and communal. This was an interesting experience but I won't be returning.
