20 Best Taiwanese Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"With three locations in Southern California (Rowland Heights, Chino Hills, and Monrovia), Yi Mei Deli serves up solid Taiwanese breakfast and small bites. The guai shu shu (deep-fried intestines stuffed with sticky rice) are snappy and filling, while the gua bao (pork belly buns) never disappoint." - Cathy Chaplin

15 Restaurants for Kid-Friendly Carryout in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Taiwanese breakfasts go heavy on kid-friendly things like fried dough, sticky rice, and scrambled eggs. The straightforward sesame flat breads and egg omelets go down easy, while the slightly more complicated fan tuan with pork floss and pickled mustard greens is ideal for more adventuresome eaters." - Eater Staff

Google
How many places get 5 stars for food but I get one star for atmosphere and service? Yi Mei Deli! The food is exceptional. My favorite is the salty soybean grease stick (trying to translate it, LOL) soup but everything is good. Their milk teas are delicious too. Yes, the service is sassy. I call it the “angry people deli” (in mandarin) because everyone is pissed but I go there multiple times when I’m in town. Expect exceptional food but just angry vibes from all directions.

I used to come to this place often during my college days. When I returned recently with my mom, we were treated with utter disrespect by a lady who seemed absolutely unhappy to be serving there. For example, not only was I ignored when I asked her to heat up my sticky rice lotus leaf wrap, but when my elderly mother lost a lid and requested a new one, this lady gave her a lecture instead of simply providing it. Yi Mei may dominate the local market for soy milk, and their clientele may keep coming regardless of the poor treatment, but this was by far the worst, most unpleasant dining experience I’ve had in over thirty years of dining in the area.

First time tried the Black Mushroom Pork Bun tasteless and lady work at Cashier got a sour face (臉很臭).

Google
Decent Chinese breakfast and snack. Don't come here for service or dining experience. Minimal accommodations, pick up window is outside. Small dining area and very noisy refrigerators.

Google
Taiwanese breakfast classics done right—dan bing and soy milk are my staples. The line moves fast and the prices are friendly. Seating is tight, so I often take it to go. Staff is efficient even during the morning rush. Great fuel before a hike nearby,

Google
Had breakfast with my husband this morning here. We come here every time we visit the area. It made me sad seeing so many negative reviews because we love this place. They do take credit but there is a minimum of $30. The food was amazing as always and the staff was busy getting orders out. Once again we left very happy.

Google
This is a very Chinese-style restaurant, the main features are Chinese breakfast food. For example, there are: soybean milk, soft tofu, fried noodles, as well as various meat stuffed, vegetable-filled steamed buns. The food looks simple, but the taste is richer. The area of the hall is small, there are many tables and chairs, and it is very dense. The location of the store is very good, just inside the Hong Kong Plaza, next to a supermarket, with a lot of traffic, a lot of parking spaces, and the transportation is very convenient.

Google
This is a Chinese-flavored drink and snack bar. This snack is a kind of food that Chinese people eat for breakfast. There are all kinds of steamed buns, dumplings, soy bean juice and sour plum soup. The taste is very authentic and Chinese characteristics. It came out in a few minutes and there are external stalls that can be bought and taken away at any time. This store is in front of a large supermarket. The traffic is very convenient. There are many people. The tables in the store are very compact and even a little crowded. Many cars I often come here to eat

Yelp
Good spot for traditional Taiwanese breakfast items. After getting lunch at Tofu King, my dad was craving youtiao, so we came here for some youtiao and soy milk. It did not disappoint here at all. I wish I tried the fantuan and egg omelets but we were in a hurry and rushing to a friend's wedding afterwards. But next time I want to try their other items

Yelp
Not a huge fan, but I probably didn't know what to order... Although I did really like the turnip cake with egg and would go for that again. Tried the rice rolls and it felt too heavy to finish. Their soy milk (warm) tasted a little burnt, probably was in the warmer for quite a long time. Service is good, they have to be as swift as possible since it's a small place. Not many tables to sit down and eat. Didn't feel particularly clean either.

Yelp
This place is definitely a take-out place for me. We like their hot soy bean milk (sweeten), their rice rolls with the fried Chinese donut (greasy though) with fried Shredded pork in the middle, and the beef rolls. Major downside of this place are the high prices. I could get a nice sit down breakfast at Delicious Food corner for about the same price. Unfortunately, today their soy bean milk had a subtle burnt taste. This has happened before, but I doubt they would exchange it. There is another similar place called Four Seasons in Hacienda Heights that you may want to give a try.

Yelp
My kids are in love with the fan tuan here. Every bite is filled with sticky rice, crunchy Chinese donut, dried pork sung and pickled veggies. It's the perfect on the go meal and it keeps well. The Chinese donut does get a bit soggy though. I am a fan of their juicy pork dumplings and the meat/veggie steamed bun. On our last visit, we tried the sweet soy drink. It came unsweetened and you have to add your own sugar. I was not a fan of the overly roasted flavor. It's a bit hard to order if you don't speak Chinese. I don't come here for the service, but they gotta stop being so stingy with napkins and spoons. There was five people in my party and they only gave us two spoons and exactly five napkins. It was hard to flag anyone down for more utensils and napkins. Oh yeah, bring your own water because they don't provide any!

Yelp
Every time we are in LA, we wanted to try different Chinese breakfast places. It is our first time here at Yi Mei Deli. It looks like a store that has been here for a while with many loyal customers. We ordered a few of our favorite food items. Our favorite there was Egg Omelette with Chinese Donut. The egg omelette was soft with fresh green onion. The Chinese donut was soft and chewy instead of the ones that are hard and crunchy. The best part is that they have garlic sou sauce and excellent hot sauce. All these are needed to make an authentic and delicious traditional egg omelette. The beef sandwich wasn't as good as I hoped. The sandwich part was way too crunchy. The beef and toppings were so so. I would not order it again. The Salty Rice Roll was pretty standard. We had better at other places, but it's not bad. The Fresh Sweetened Soymilk (Cold) was so so. Definitely had it better than other places. I don't think we needed the large bowl of the soy milk. Overall, a traditional Chinese style breakfast place in Rowland Heights. They have many other food items, such as Chinese tamales, frozen dumplings, that look very good. We may come back again if we are in the area.

Yelp
I'm going to start with the food because if I start with the service or the cleanliness, things go down pretty quickly. The food is SO good. I've been eating at this place for more than 20 years, and it's gone through a lot of changes but one thing that remains is that the food is super tasty! I love the sweet hot soy milk, egg, scallion pancake, Chinese tamale, fried donut, fried radish cake, rice roll...all so great! You can also get stuff to go and I highly recommend a few of the zong za. The staff? Not overly friendly. Tables are not cleaned up too quickly. Smells like a side street in Taiwan outside. BUT- if you can get past all that, you will love this place.

Yelp

Yelp
I only come to this Yi Mei with friends who speak mandarin. I love this location for their egg omelet and daikon cake. It's so good fresh! I definitely recommend eating there for maximum freshness. The tea eggs were also good, while I think the rice roll is better at the chino hills location. They also let you add your own sugar to the sweet soy milk. The service was fast and friendly, and the dining area was pretty small. It's a little warm inside at times, but not unbearable. Parking was easy in the lot.

Yelp
Came here for a quick taiwanese breakfast before a long day. We got the soymilk, peanut milk, and coffee and they were all delicious and authentic tasting. We got fan tuan, dan bing, you tiao, shao bing, and bean curd soup! All of them were so yummy and decent sized portions. The fan tuan were perfect because we also ordred some to go and brought them with for snack for later.

Yelp
This place truly reminded me of fresh Taiwanese breakfast. The location is very small - not too many tables and the line to order was a bit cramped especially when it's busy. I wish there was a place like this closer to Cerritos, I would be going every weekend. We were able to add the youtiao into our jianbing which tasted just like I've had in Taiwan. We also ordered sweet soymilk, which you're able to add your own sugar to your own taste. We also got their radish cake, which tasted pretty normal nothing too special about it. We got their fantuan and I was surprised how much I liked it - the rice was nice and chewy and the salty meat floss filling had so much flavor. Downside of it all - the cost cannot compare to Taiwanese prices, but that's given haha. Everything we ordered was delicious and can't wait to come back again when I get the chance!

Yelp
I went into the store and just saw a non sugar, zero sugar, sugar free cold soy milk in the fridge. I planned to take it from fridge Yet, the clerk stopped me to take it by myself and enforce me have to order from the cashier then they will take it for me. And I followed their instructions in the end they gave me the wrong product! If you ask me to follow your rule you better make it right!

Yelp
I'm surprised that I never had fan tuan before after many years of traveling and eating my way around the world. I've been to Taiwan before, but I didn't get a chance to eat fan tuan there. Obviously I've been missing out on traditional Taiwanese breakfast dishes for the past decade or so. I'm glad I was able to try my first fan tuan at Yi Mei Deli. This is a small, hole in the wall restaurant right next to HK2 Food District. They serve traditional Taiwanese dishes and also sells frozen dumplings in a freezer bag. I don't know Mandarin but the workers speak enough English that I was able to order what I wanted. I paid with cash but there was a sign that they take credit card payments but there's a 3.2% surcharge or something from what I remembered. I ordered a fan tuan, beef sandwich and sweet soy milk. I originally wanted an omelette but they said something along the line that the kitchen was closed. I guess they stopped cooking over the stove at certain time because I was there around 1pm. The food came out fast and delivered to the table piping hot. The fan tuan's saltiness, slight crunch from the Chinese donut inside was so delicious. I tried dipping it into my hot sweet soy milk but it didn't make too much of a difference in taste. The beef sandwich was small but just enough portion wise. The sweet soy milk wasn't sugary sweet, but was rather plain that we had to add slightly more sugar. The total cost for the three items came out to be about $15. Not dirt cheap but not bad because the meal was shared with a friend and it was enough food. Overall great place for traditional Taiwanese breakfast foods that comes out piping hot, fast and delicious.

Yelp
We used to come here and eat breakfast a lot when we lived around this area. Today, we both off work, therefore, decided to come get breakfast! As usual, food are great. Services is decent. But I do want to call it out, if you pay by using credit card, there will be a 3.5% service fee added to the bill.

Yelp
I love the beef roll and mijiang here Service is quick Small Simple and quick authentic feeling

Yelp
Im on a road trip with my siblings and nephews toward LA. We went here for breakfast because my sister recommended it. I have not had authentic Taiwanese cuisine for a long time! We ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup, egg omelete, zongzi, Chinese breakfast meatball, and egg fried taro pancakes! Omg, I was in heaven. Everything was delicious. This place is kind of small during busy rush hours like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. To go orders are highly recpmmended.
google avatar

Fionna L.

Yelp
Come here for an authentic Taiwanese breakfast! Fantuan, soy milk, congee, dan bing - they do it all! Cash only. My family has bought their frozen meat buns in bulk for decades and while they've become noticeably less fragrant than they were before, they have always been dependable and delicious. They have a couple tables in the middle to dine in but I would recommend takeout since it gets quite busy.

Yelp
My favorite place for Taiwanese breakfast in the 626. Prices have gone up quite a bit over the years so no longer a cheap spot but still tasty. My go to is the salted rice roll, the shao bing you tiao, and the iced sweetened soy milk. Other delights include the pork belly gua bao, the tea eggs, and egg pancake. Thankfully this place takes credit card too. Order at the counter and they will bring all the food to you, including the prepackaged items on display. It's usually pretty busy in the morning but you can usually find a seat since it's a spot for a quick meal.

JT W.

Yelp
First of all. A LA "C" in cleanliness is a Chinese "B+". Like a Japanese "B-" is an LA "A". With that, the place reeks of chlorine so there. No need for tip. The cashier won't take changes from customer directly like it's laced with fentanyl. Other than that it's a three stars.

Yelp
3.5 Stars Weekend mornings are packed! But they seem to pump out orders quickly though. I called my order in about 8 minutes prior to pick up and it was ready by the time I got there. They currently have a small outdoor window for take out and some tables for dine in. Most orders are for take out. Fan Tuan (salty rice roll) - Just the average rice roll but seems to be made inconsistently. Some had way more filling than others. The rice was also a little dry. Beef Sandwich - Similar to the beef rolls but with a flaky bun. Delicious! I have to try it with pickles next time, but it was an extra $1.50, seems quite high for just pickles. Overall decent Taiwanese food. I'll definitely be back to try their other items like the dumplings and soy milk.
google avatar

Yelp
Yi mei is the perfect Taiwanese breakfast spot! We ordered the fan tuan and radish cake and added green onion egg to both and I would definitely recommend! Only downside is that it is a little pricey and cash only with limited seating
google avatar

Airi G.

Yelp
You don't understand how much I was craving a zongzi. I saw about 50 of them on a table and my mood immediately shot up. I loved the mushroom and pork one tamale (zongzi) more than the Shanghai tamale since the mushroom gave it a more umami flavor. It was also just made so it was piping hot whereas the other one was room temperature. Unfortunately, they were out of the sweet zongzi so that means I'll be making a trip back to try it out. I also couldn't resist trying the green onion bread which turned out to be really fluffy and had salt infused between the folds. The other pastry I sampled was the onion and it was good but not mind-blowing. The good news is I definitely want to come back to try out their traditional Taiwanese breakfast items since what I had was so good but the bad news is that they're cash only so come prepared.
google avatar

Garrick S.

Yelp
I thought it was very expensive (for what you get) and that the food tasted terrible. The texture of my dumplings were below average with the taste being average. $11 for 8 dumplings. My soy milk didn't taste anything like what I was expecting. It tasted more like a soup. Very strange. I've never had soy milk that bad before. The freezer in the main dining room was making a huge sound, obviously in need of repairs, which ruined the ambiance of the entire dining area. It doesn't appear that anyone is working there is concerned over these deficiencies. Between the high prices and low quality of food, I don't think I'll ever be back.

Yelp
就是這個味! OMG!! I piggy out when I stop in the store over last weekend. I looked at the menu and wanted to buy everything there is! But they only take cash or checks! Bummer!! Oh well. Lucky I have some lose changes on me and so I can savoring on these memorizing tasting of Taiwan!! Everything there tasted wonderful delicious. I got some buns, and then some mystery thing I have no clue what I ordered when the drive from there back to San Diego .... Hahahaha but it still tasty!!! The counter helper was extremely friendly and helpful. 台灣的人情味。Totally missed that! The 豆花! The best I have tasted by far! And closest to the locale taste of Taiwan. That kept me smiling of each taste of the food from here.

Yelp
Pretty decent Taiwanese breakfast spot inside the Hong Kong supermarket. Cash only. This is my go to place in the area. They have a variety of selections. I would recommend this place to my friends.
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
Came here over the weekend and I must say the stuff we bought were pretty good. I got an array of Chinese tamales: the red bean and the mushroom pork were both delicious. We also got this ball of thing which tasted like mochi on the outside, stuffed with minced pork (also topped with it as well) and it was very tasty.

Yelp
I was craving some Taiwanese breakfast and came across Yi Mei at Yelp, so I decided to check it out with my sister. My dad had always taken us to Shi Hai (Four Seas) for Taiwanese breakfast so he and my mom never heard of Yi Mei, even though they frequented the Hong Kong plaza. My sister and I ordered a small sweet soy milk, small salty soy milk, a salty fan tuan with tsong dan (scallion egg), and a dan bin (egg roll). I'm glad I had cash because the restaurant was CASH ONLY. We got our ticket number and waited outside for 10 minutes or so to get our food. At this time, indoor dining still isn't open so everything was takeout only. When we got our food, I expected to get the iced sweet soy milk, but I guess the hot one was default. So, if you'd like the iced one, make sure you specified it when you ordered! Anyways, after we brought the food back home, we were ready to dig in. The hot sweet soy milk was delicious, it wasn't as sweet, which is how I liked it. The salty soy milk was also very good, but it was a bit too heavy for me as a breakfast, but I know plenty of people who LOVE it. As for the salty fan tuan, it was SO good. I'm not sure what others were talking about regarding the rice to stuffing ration because I actually think the ratio was perfect. I think because I ordered it with the scallion egg, there was only enough room for a thin layer of sticky rice around the you tiao, tsong dan, the pickled radish, and the pork floss. Each bite was so good, that I was so sad to have finished it! Finally, the dan bin was really good, especially their soy sauce with garlic! I'm sure that when I come back to LA again, I'll definitely go back for a hearty Taiwanese breakfast again! There are so many other things I wanted to try, such as their buns, their wa gui, and their sour plum juice (which I absolutely loved in Taiwan). Until next time, Yi Mei!
google avatar

Yelp
Tl;dr - Food is good, the soymilk is not. Cash only. This is our usual spot when we crave Taiwanese breakfast. No frills spot with a decent amount of options. Food is solid, authentic and tasty. My fave is the danbing (egg pancake) with their garlic soy sauce. However, don't bother with the soymilk. The last 3 times I ordered this (visits were spaced out) it tasted burnt and off putting. I couldn't get past a few sips and had to throw it out. Very disappointing bc soymilk is a staple of breakfast and we were missing it.

Tim P.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and vibe that gets you feel like you are at Taiwan! Recommend!! Fan tuan is crispy and tasty.
google avatar

Eris H.

Yelp
CASH ONLY!!! 4 for food and price 2 for rude service, not to me, the cashier yelled at the lady before me in front of her child "Do not touch the food! Put them back!"
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
I really like Yi Mei. Whenever I'm in LA, I make it a point to head there for breakfast.

K C.

Yelp
It's a good place to grab a quick Taiwanese breakfast. This place is very old has been here for so many years. The salty rice roll "Fantuan" and fried radish cake is consistently good. That's usually all I get from here. There a new location in Chino Hills.
google avatar

Pam L.

Yelp
My favorite thing in the world is taiwanese breakfast. This is a great place to pick up a taiwanese dan bing (egg omelette roll), radish cake with egg on top, or fan tuan (rice burrito with chinese donut inside). Their Soy milk is delicious too! Make sure to bring cash! no cards or apple pay here.
google avatar

Jasmine Z.

Yelp
Yi Mei was the most authentic Taiwanese breakfast I've had in the U.S., but that may not be saying much because I rarely spend time in SGV and have not had the opportunity to try all the popular spots. My friends and I ordered a little too much...we got 2 orders of dan bing, 3 fan tuan, one scallion pancake (cong you bing), 4 you tiao, one dou jiang, 2 orders of the beef roll (niu rou jian bing), 2 orders of radish cakes, soy milk, and a milk tea. Obviously prices will never compare to Taiwan, but $70 for more than enough food to feed 7 people is impressive. Although I didn't have room to try every dish, I enjoyed everything I ate. My personal faves were the scallion pancake and beef wrap, especially when dipped in the garlic sauce. I'd definitely return if I'm ever in the area! Note: We placed an order online, but it didn't seem to go through. My friend who picked up the food ended up having to reorder everything in person.
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
I was there this morning. In the middle of ordering my food, the staff answered a phone, and started to take the telephone order. This is such a terrible service. I left immediately and went to JJ bakery. I will never come to this place AGAIN!
google avatar

Yelp
Very simple, delicious Taiwanese breakfast. This is our go to and we are craving Taiwanese breakfast which is at least 1 to 2 times a week. We typically get takeout from here, and it's very quick and easy there's a line you go up you order and the food comes out almost right away, a few things they do need to cook. We did eat here the other day, the tables are a little tight but it it works perfectly for a quick little breakfast. My favorite is the rice roll, the turnup cake, and their sauce that they give with the garlic. My boyfriend is Taiwanese, and he enjoys all their dishes here. States that they are very similar to what he had back in Taiwan. I would say there coffee is a tad suite in my opinion if you like that. Grab the rice rolls, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Across town, Yi Mei Deli is a direct competitor of Four Seas. The prices at Four Seas have gotten higher and higher over the years and I can't justify the prices any longer so I decided to see if there is a different place that is more affordable to feed my family a Taiwanese breakfast. Their English here is extremely limited so it may be hard for a non-Chinese speaker to navigate through the menu. I suggest showing pictures or pointing to be your best way around the language barrier. You order the food inside and then pick up the food outside the take out window. I tried their fried chinese donut (Yo Tiao), salty rice roll (Fan Tuan), and radish cakes with garlic sauce (Lo Bu Gao). They were all delicious! The fried chinese donut and salty rice roll were similar enough to Four Seas. I actually prefer Yi Mei's rice roll because the rice is less hard than the one at Four Seas. The garlic sauce from Four Seas definitely beats out Yi Mei's but that doesn't take from the fact that prices are higher. Overall, Yi Mei Deli will be my family's new go to Taiwanese breakfast place.

Yelp
it's 2022 and we're going towards a cashless society yet yimei only accepts cash. smells like... tax evasion.
google avatar

Peggy F.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the food here. We ordered 2 sets of sesame biscuits with Chinese donuts (燒餅油條), fried turnip cakes and cold soybean milk. The sesame biscuit was cold and hard, and they didn't even put the Chinese donut in it like other places. The sesame biscuits from supermarkets taste way better than theirs! The fried turnip cake was ok but I've never seen anywhere that puts green onions on them. Also, they are cash only which is very inconvenient and unsanitary especially during Covid. Probably trying to evade paying taxes.
google avatar

Yelp
It's located inside HK plaza. Not a place for a big group. My husband and I normally order: -sweet soy drink: it comes in a bowl and I add sugar and dip bread in it. So good! -salty soy drink: this also comes in a bowl but already has the bread cut into pieces. This bowl was good but it just depends if you are in the mood for a salty dish or not. -egg omelette: when you eat it, definitely put garlic soy sauce over it -pork-sung with donut bread wrapped with rice (fun-hwan): we thought the proportions were perfect! - beef sandwich (nu-ro-sao-bing): dip it in soy sauce and vinegar. Makes the sandwich taste even better :) -pork bun sandwich: the pork was a bit dry. We probably won't order this next time. Overall, service was fast and all the items (except the pork bun sandwich) was delicious!

Yelp
They need to put a foil in the box to prevent hot food melting this foam box, it is poisoning!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is my go to breakfast place if I'm craving a Taiwanese breakfast. You get your food pretty fast here too which is a plus. You basically go in and place your order and pay with the cashier and then you seat yourself. Make sure to keep your receipt because when they deliver your food, they check the receipt to make sure they're giving it to the right table. I love their egg omelette and Chinese donut! The egg omelette is very good with their garlic soy sauce. I also really enjoy their Chinese donut because it is so crispy. I had their radish cake before and although it was a bit too fried, it was still good, but I would probably go elsewhere if I'm ever craving that. This place is also quite small so it's best to go with a party of 4 or less. It's located in the HK plaza so there's tons of parking.
google avatar

Janette L.

Yelp
They open early so options are very limited. The employee doesn't speak much English so it was difficult to get an explanation of what some of the items were.

Ning C.

Yelp
Chinese donut was too oily. I know the thing is fried, but doesn't need to drip oil. Prices were high, tables were sticky. Better to go to the Arcadia location. Better quality and MUCH cleaner.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Best place in town for taiwanese breakfast. Get the rice rolls, daikon cake, soy milk! All delicious.
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
I love coming in or taking their food to go. To me I like to compare it as the Taiwanese breakfast joint version of McDonald's or any fast food joint with a large breakfast menu.. food comes packaged and order is ready in minutes if the place isn't crowded. I like to take it for my road trips. Endorsed by my Taiwanese housemate too!
google avatar

Yelp
CASH ONLY !!! And food not cheap !!! Servers all look angry and bad customer services. I will not go again and not recommend to go !

Yelp
Can you believe what I discovered after eating this mung bean cake? MOLD!!!!!! Stop coming to this store.

Yelp
Yi-Mei Deli keeping the traditional Taiwanese Foods. Breakfast and soybean milk are so delicious. Midnight snacks and night market styled dishes are out of this world, you don't want to miss it. Yin Yin H.

Yelp
Very simple setup but good food especially for the price. Bring cash as they DO NOT take cards at all. Their soybean milk and chinese donut is better to eat dine in. But overall, cannot complain about much

Yelp
This is the second time this year I take out from Yi Mei, their Youtiao is still refreshed and the whole Youtiao is burnt and drip dark oil.
