I ran out of gas on Wilshire Boulevard last month, and a good Samaritan stopped to help and pushed my car across Wilton. He'd been walking by after dropping his teenage daughter off at school, and we ended up talking while I waited for my exasperated husband to arrive with a can of gas. Long story short, we took him and his daughter to KBBQ at King Chang a couple weeks later, then went next door to Yi Fang for dessert.
I knew about this place because my family goes to King Chang pretty often, and my mom, brother, and sister-in-law have all taken my five-year-old to get sweet drinks as a reward/distraction. He always asks for his "shake" now when we go to King Chang, which is how we ended up there with our new friends.
Yi Fang is a Taiwanese fruit tea chain, and this location is in a sort of reverse strip mall in Koreatown, at 6th and Harvard. Parking is in a valet lot tucked behind the businesses, and the whole complex gets busy in the evening hours.
The tea shop is cute and spacious, with counter service and plentiful seating. There was no wait to order, and the cashier was friendly and efficient. We picked our drinks from a posted menu complete with helpful photographs. My children shared a strawberry milk frappé, while my husband and I got a traditional milk tea with boba, half sweet.
I tried a sip of the strawberry milk frappé, and I can see why my kids like it: it is sweet, sweet, sugary sweet. The milk tea boba was great, if not remarkable. Maybe next time I'll try one of the namesake fruit teas.
We sat with our new friends, chatting and drinking dessert until it was time to put the kids to bed. I'm sure we'll be back to Yi Fang next time we bring them to King Chang.
