Best Restaurants and Bars to Try on Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa | Eater San Diego

"Taiwanese hot pot chain YinTang Spicy Hot Pot has established itself as a popular build-your-own-bowl restaurant in Kearny Mesa. The wide range of proteins, including beef and fish, as well as tofu, fish balls, and fresh vegetables, allows diners to pick and choose their favorites for the mala bone broth or dry, hot, and spicy mix. Once the raw mix is weighed, the kitchen prepares the meal by separating the ingredients for the optimal hot pot experience. Don’t skip on the skewers, which customers pick out themselves, get grilled in the kitchen, and are brought out piping hot." - Helen I. Hwang

San Diego Restaurants Serving the Best Chinese Food | Eater San Diego

"The Taiwanese hot pot chain now has locations on Convoy and Mira Mesa, offering the mouth-numbing “mala” spicy soup options, along with curry and tomato soup bases as alternatives. The do-it-yourself meat and vegetable buffet stations give customers options to build their own bowls, which are weighed by the cashier and brought to the kitchen, where the ingredients are cooked in separate saucepans to bring out each component’s distinct flavors. The Mira Mesa outpost offers a skewer station, where diners can pick out beef, tofu, or chicken skin to be grilled in the kitchen." - Helen I. Hwang

Yin Tang Build Your Own Hotpot is hands-down one of my favorite spots! The selection is amazing, the broth is super flavorful, and the swelters (those little skewers of meat, seafood, and veggies) are next level. Everything is fresh, delicious, and cooked exactly how I like it since I get to customize it myself. The service here is also fantastic—everyone is so friendly, attentive, and quick to help if you have questions or need anything. It really adds to the experience and makes you feel welcomed every time. Plus, the location is perfect. There are so many great dessert places nearby, so it’s the ideal spot to grab hotpot and then walk around for something sweet afterward. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, Yin Tang never disappoints. Highly recommend!

Google
An interesting hot pot because you pick out the ingredients (you place them with tongs into a wet bowl), select the broth, and they cook it up for you. They also give you the option of skewers which were very tasty. And you can select spice level, so you have a lot of control over the meal, which is great. Some of the ingredients were suspect, like the crab sticks which seemed like crab-flavored tofu. That aside, was a positive experience. The place was very dirty. There was a dirty cardboard box on the floor, the bowls for the food weren’t clean, the table wasn’t wiped off. I guess that adds authenticity? Music was kind of loud in the restaurant too. Also I thought it was pricey— two hotpots one round of skewers and water (no waiter service, your on your own for water) was $52. They charge you by the pound, and a minimum 1-lbs is standardized per hotpot customer.

Google
Fresh, delicious and popular spot for hot pot! They cook it for you so no need to wait and boil everything yourself. Plenty of options for every diet. The place is clean, produce is super fresh, and their sesame sauce is really yummy. I’ll be back for sure!

Google
I came here for the skewers and they did not disappoint! Every skewer was packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and had that delicious grilled taste that’s hard to beat. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable—great value for the quality you get. The inside of the restaurant is also impressively clean and well-kept, which made the whole dining experience even better. Definitely recommend if you’re craving tasty skewers in a nice, clean spot!

Google
I had a great time at YinTang Spicy hotpot spot! The process is different from any other hot pot restaurant but easy to follow: grab a bowl and tongs, pick your ingredients from a wide selection of meats, veggies, and noodles, then head over to choose your sauce and spice level. Once you've got everything, they weigh your bowl and give you a little keychain as a ticket while they cook it. If you're in the mood for skewers, just grab a separate bowl for those. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and the whole place is clean and well-organized. Whether you're a hotpot pro or trying it for the first time, this place makes it easy and enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Google
Good to the last bite! This is the best vegetarian alternative restaurant in the San Diego area. Vegan options too. Nice and clean. 10/10 recommended!

Google
First time here, was pretty good. You get assigned a table; then you go up and grab your bowl to make your hotpot (at least a pound) . You can get a second bowl for skewers and hand it to the counter , I would recommend getting all your hotpot stuff first then going back for the skewers so its easier on your hands. Would go back again.

Google
Food was ok the skewers were a little too greasy like they were cooked in oil that wasn’t hot enough. The soup was somewhat flavorless and i did notice some cabbage with mold on the line. Atmosphere is nice but service feels a bit curt even though we arrived close to opening and it wasn’t busy at all yet.

Yelp
The food and service was excellent and affordable! My family and friends always go here, whenever we're craving hot pot. 10/10 would go here again!

Yelp
Food was delicious. Large variety of meats and vegetables. Well worth money. I would come again.

Yelp
Ingenious :) whoever invented hot pot like this deserves an award! Seriously, this experience is impressive. My friends and I went to this place for dinner and I completely enjoyed it. I mean ignore the ambiance and service cause that's not what they're known for haha. They are known for their unique take for a hot pot dish. You literally pick and choose what to put in your hot pot on their items. Of course, for a degenerate foodie that I am, I always go for the meat, which is lamb and bunch of expensive mushrooms lol. I fill out my bowl with just that. I picked their original bone broth as its main based for my soup. You get to choose the spice level as well. You're the master of your hot pot.. it's endless for only $13.99 per pound lol. They have their skewers, too which they offer to fried it, but we decided to not go to that route and blow the bathroom after. It's a chill night fellas.. don't get it twisted haha. Overall, you kidding me.. definitely a solid recommendation to those people visiting San Diego :)

Yelp
11-15-24 Once you arrived at the restaurant, first thing you need to do is put your name on the waitlist. After the staff assigned a table to you, head toward the bowl station to the left of the skewer station. Then get a gigantic plastic bowl and tong, select items that you want (make sure it's 1 lb or more) and take it up to the cashier to weigh (pay after your meal). When your food is cooked, they will bring to your table. Ordered: 4/5 -Original beef broth 1.02 lb $14.27-very aromatic! I enjoyed this flavor better than the Tom Yum. -Tom Yum 1.07 lb $14.97- the broth was yummy! Service: 2/5 It was chaotic and confusing when we came. No one was at the door. Customers were walking around everywhere. Because it was our first time being here, we didn't know how the system worked. They were so busy; we couldn't find any staff to ask questions. The ones behind the cash register were over crowded with customers. I asked one of the ladies standing behind me to show me the ropes. My husband's bowl came out before mine. After 20min of waiting, my order was still not ready. After seeing customers from 3 other tables who came after us got their food before me, I inquired about mine; they forgot my dinner. Note: Warning (the sesame sauce), I had to rush home to relieve myself. As for my husband, he had the same problem later that evening. I know... TMIF Even though the end result was a rush to... I still liked the food here and will give them another try.

Yelp
This Yin Tang location is smaller than the Mira Mesa location, but I think has better/more attentive service. They have skewers as well, and a handful of different toppings from the Mira Mesa location. Yin Tang has become one of my favorites spots for hotpot, because you can get your bowl exactly how you like it. I love how they have so many different types of fish cake/balls and different kinds of noodles. I normally like spicy broths, but I actually like the tomato broth more than the original spicy bone broth, surprisingly. Apparently the dry mix (no broth) is even better, but I haven't tried it yet.

Yelp
Overall the food was amazing. You get a bowl and put what you want from the toppings bar in it. Wide variety of foods and choices. Love the skewer section and the different types of meat you can choose. The process was difficult to grasp at first. You get assigned a table, grab a bowl, fill it up, get your skewers in a separate bucket, wait in line at the register, they take your bowl and you tell them what soup base and spice, you give them the skewers and spice, they give you a key ring with a number, you tell them what table number you are, and you wait at your designated table for your food. Different process. It was busy on a Saturday night. I felt like my bowl was packed, but it only came out to like $18.50ish for a 1.35lb bowl.

Yelp
Overall experience 4/5 The skewers have a 5 piece minimum and they ARE NOT included in the soup bowl weigh, it is separate and I wish I knew before so I could assess the weight better since the bowl has a 1lb minimum. Regardless it was very very good and filling, I preferred the skewer over the hotpot bowl--I ordered the beef bone broth in medium which was the perfect level of savory and spicy, without being super oily etc. The workers were nice with refilling the water consistently and keeping everything clean regardless of the huge rush! Overall you should visit but I would say to share the skewers, or only order either the skewers or the hotpot.

Yelp
Was pretty packed on a Friday dinner, came a little past 5PM and waited about 15 minutes for a table for 3. I love the idea of BYO hotpot, it was a fun experience! I got a mix of beef, fish/meatballs, veggies and egg noodles which was under the 1lb minimum so I had to add more. Came to around $16 for my bowl of 1.15 pounds ($13.99/lb). Bowl came out steaming hot after another ~15 minutes. I got the original beef bone broth non-spicy which was flavorful and surprisingly still had a slight kick to it. Paid at the front counter at the very end. Service is okay, I understand they're busy. One drawback is it's pretty cramped and loud inside which was kinda overwhelming. All in all, I would come back when I'm craving customizable hot pot!

Yelp
What a somewhat unassuming yet awesome little spot in Convoy! There are so many hot pot options in San Diego so it's easy to get lost amongst some of the fancier and more prominent ones out there. But this little gem that is located in the same shopping center as Bonchon and China Max should definitely be on your list. It's a pretty simple concept, you grab a big bowl - and I mean BIG - you fill it up with all the ingredients you could want. Meats, yes. Vegetables, yes. Noodles, yes. Other fixings, yes. It's "all you can eat" in a way by putting as much as you want in the bowl. The cost is based on the weight of your bowl. I forgot to take a picture of the pricing but it was pretty fair. Once your bowl is weighed, they cook it in the back and then bring it out to your table. One of the things that really surprised me in this place is their selection of skewers! They have a wall full of skewers with all sorts of meats. Some are priced REALLY WELL! The spices on the skewers are pretty much all the same (I could taste salt, cumin, pepper amongst others) and they are fried (vs grilled like most places) but they definitely taste good! The skewers are the perfect pairing to the hot pot. Oh and you can also get a "dry pot" where they just hold off on the soup and instead sauce it up. Also good! Taking out one star due to service. The workers don't really talk to you so for someone who is not familiar with the way you order and grab the food, you might be kind of lost lol. At least the food is good!

Yelp
I haven't been back since their grand opening earlier this year. I used to come once a week but took a break after my bf got food poisoning (avoid the spam!!). I was so sad to stop going but I want back yesterday and it was still so good + new upgrades!! They added the skewer fridge. I wanted to try the skewers but you have to get minimum of 5... I was also surprised by the line out of the door and hour wait to get seated !! I'm happy they are getting business now but I do miss when it was empty and I can sit wherever lol. Overall, flavor is consistent and they're pretty fast cooking your bowl. I'll be back again soon :). I got the og bone broth 2/5 spice.

Yelp
This place exceeded expectations. I love me a good hotpot, but am used to cooking my own! I do enjoy cooking it at the table, but there is something to be said for having it cooked and come out beautifully for me at the table. You go to the bar and select all the items you want, the items are weighed, and you pick your broth. Then you wait while your ingredient concepts come to life in a beautiful bowl of soup. So lovely. The original flavor broth with medium spice was great. The quality of the ingredients was solid, and service was quiet and unobtrusive. Ambience was quiet and clean, minimalist, and had everything I feel like a good noodle house needs. Plenty of napkins and chili oil at every table. Reasonably priced. It's a choose your own adventure hotpot experience. We will be back!

Yelp
The older lady working today at lunch was so rude. And there was hair in my food. Disgusting.

Yelp
The broth and the toppings here are really good! Everything is fresh, I like that it's quick and you can select everything that you want. I ended up finishing my whole bowl. Ambiance is pretty cozy and reminiscent of a typical Chinese restaurant.

Yelp
Yin Tang has been heavy in my rotations recently so I had to try this location in SD! This location surprised me because you could choose items for them to deep-fry and it reminded me of the street food skewers you often find in Asia! The service here was of what you would expect from a stereotypical Asian restaurant. They're efficient and they get what they need to do done, but they're not necessarily the most eager to help. Most things are self-grab, but getting their attention for other needs may be difficult. There was plenty of indoor seating and the workers are quick to prepare your table and get you seated. Their toppings bar is self-service and they prepare your bowl in the back. I ordered the house beef bone broth and it was absolutely delicious! Parking: I came on a Saturday night and the plaza was filled. I had to make a few rounds but usually there's ample parking in the plaza. Little Note: This location is doing a promotion where you can check in and leave a review for a free drink! I got the lemon black tea drink, which I fairly enjoyed.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place and came on a Friday around 5 PM. It was pretty packed and we waited around 15-20 mins to be seated. I like the idea of non AYCE BYO hotpot and was impressed by all the options at the self serve bar! I got a mix of meat, seafood and veggies with egg noodles. It took around 15 mins for our food to come out and boy was it steaming hot. The bowl was huge and was enough for me to be stuffed with some leftovers after! I got the original beef bone broth non-spicy and it was flavorful and actually still had a kick to it. Would come back if I'm craving BYO hot pot.

Yelp
This is the original yintang in San Diego and always hits the spot. The food is consistent and all the workers are extremely nice and helpful. We came here on a weekday and with out any wait we were in and out within half a hour. I would recommend this spot to any lunch seekers!

Yelp
Incredible and hearty hot pot. You can create your own and it goes by weight. No frills but delicious broth and tons of options to add to your soup. I usually eat here about once a week. Highly recommend.

Qunh Mai N.

Yelp
It's kind busy, but you need to treat dine in customer the same way as to go customer. Girl at counter throw my togo order on the table, showing attittude, acting like I was at fault for ordering to go instead of dine in like other people. I guess this is what happened when the store has gained too many customers, so it's the norm to treat some customer this way. Food is good, but sometime service is trash

David J.

Yelp
This is my new favorite hotpot place, having displaced Little Sheep (小肥羊) in my book (which no longer operates in North America anyway). Their beef bone broth is the key to their superior taste, IMO. It is quite flavorful to the point you will want to drink it alone.
google avatar

Mai H.

Yelp
One of my favorite hot pot spots in SD. First, you grab a bowl and add all the ingredients (proteins, seafood, meats, noodles, veggies, etc) you'd want in your bowl and then bring it to the cashier to weigh. You are charged by the weight. The minimum weight per bowl is 1 lb. I believe cost is around $13.99/lb. The Tom Yum broth is flavorful and so good. I usually don't care for Tom yum soups when dining at Thai restaurants, but Yintang's Tom yum broth is on point. I'm curious how their other soup bases compare to the Tom yum, but I'm afraid to be disappointed. There's a sauce bar where you make your own dipping sauce. I like the individual pot/bowl and self served option.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
I love going to Yintang whenever I'm craving spicy hotpot. It's a super affordable option that gives you lots of food. The broth is umami, salty, and spicy. The spice really hits the back of your throat. They also have tons of options to choose from. I would say this is actually cheaper than having hotpot at home. The food also gets cooked super fast so you don't have to wait long if you're hungry. Definitely my go to spot!
google avatar

Duy T.

Yelp
The broth is very delicious and soothing. And you can pick between multiple levels of spice. There are plenty of options in terms of meats, veggies, and noodles that you can put in your hot pot. Everybody can individually pick whatever they want to their liking. There are also a variety of skewers that are great to snack on.
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
So so good Be careful though the weight gets away from you and its $13.99 per lb. Everything is great They have the skewers now too!

Brianna P.

Yelp
We were sat right away. I honestly didn't know what to do but I just followed everyone else. You grab a bowl and fill it up with what you would like! I love the idea because I don't always like what they add in ramen. The food came out quickly and was delicious! The broth was amazing. I got the bone broth in medium spicy and my friend got the mild. It was perfect. Honestly the best ramen I have ever had!
google avatar

Jenny W.

Yelp
I enjoyed my meal here though my parents say it's not as good as some of the ones we have in the Bay Area (which apparently have better soup and ingredient selection). The skewers were honestly probably my favorite part. Specifically the squid and beef skewers. The pumpkin rice cake skewer I would skip, and the fried king oyster mushroom one sounded good in theory but the fried layer kept separating from the mushroom which meant the mushrooms then had no flavor (since the fried layer had all the flavor). I messed up and got my own bowl but we should have just gotten 1 bowl and shared (we saw other groups doing that). I got the regular soup, which I found to be perfect, not too spicy but a good kick of flavor for someone who doesn't like spice. I tried to add a little of everything and my takeaways were: - Skip the ramen / fresh noodles, they're portioned so you must get a massive portion. Instead get some of the glass noodles if you want some noodles. - Youtiao imo does not do well in malatang. It just got super soggy kind of disintegrates. - I didn't like either of the fish balls I got, but I thought the fish roe one was better than the sea urchin one - On the other hand, the fish slices were quite good. - Aorta is crunchy and flavorless, don't get it. Similarly skip the squid, too chewy - The shrimp paste was nice - Taro and enoki mushrooms were solid. - Can't go wrong with the sliced lamb / beef.
google avatar

Maggie O.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and my friends love this place as well! It's a self serve malatang place that has a variety of options for ingredients and soups. I have been to a location in LA and it was just as good. I usually get the beef bone broth with mild spicy and the tomato soup. I did notice they used to have colorful rice cake but now they only have the normal white one. I hope they bring it back! The service is great, and weekdays are usually less busy than weekends which is pretty common. There is a good amount of seating as well. The bowls are by weight and I usually go a little over a pound which puts me at around $20. Once your bowl has been weighed they give you a little keychain that you keep so they know which one your bowl is.
google avatar

Camille S.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday around 5pm which was perfect before the rush. For my first time, this place definitely hit the spot! It is not AYCE but rather you pay by lb. You pick out all of your toppings/meat, weigh it, and pick your broth. There is a pound minimum and the price goes by $13.99/lb. This spot is perfect especially if you don't want to stuff yourself and just choose exactly how much you can eat (hence cheaper than AYCE). On top of that, if you can't finish it, you can take it home!! The best part is their skewers!!! SOOOO FLAVORFUL! I ordered their gizzard, pork belly, and beef all mild. All in all, for my first time trying Taiwanese Hot Pot, this would be absolutely perfect on a super cold day/when I'm feeling a little sick. Each bite and sip of the soup felt like a warm hug. 10/10 Check out @SanDiegoFoodGems on IG for more food reviews
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I've been noticing malatang becoming more popular and for good reason! It's so fun being able to pick your own ingredients and broth for your bowl, I felt the whole restaurant is very well maintained and clean including all the meats and veggies put out. Your bowl has to weigh 1 pound before they can make your bowl, as the minimum will be $13.99 per pound. If your bowl is anything under, they'll send you back to add more toppings. The meats and veggies were all pretty fresh so no complaints there. I will say the soup to toppings ratio is a little off, as all of our 1 lb bowl had way more soup than we had actual food but nonetheless we enjoyed our food and thought it was a good price for how much food we got. I preferred the Tom Yum Beef Broth over the Tomato Broth that my friend got but both were good! There's many places to try malatang but if you're already considering checking out this one, then I would recommend it as the selection was good and service was fast.

Yelp
The food ok , price is moderately high but the thing that make it a one star review is mainly based on the service . When I ask about the ad placed on their counter saying get a free drink for a Yelp review / check in and when I ask the guy , he replied me in Chinese saying " are you so poor that you really need free drinks " I was offended as why wouldn't anyone want a free bottled drink with a simple Yelp check in ? He looked at me in a way that telling me I was to cheap to want to get free drink . He just answered just grab your own drink after . It was so disrespectful that make my dining experience lousy . Never will come again

Yelp
Was super excited to try this spot! You walk in, get a table assigned, then it is a self serve area where you built the ingredients of your bowl! Then you get your bowl weighed and choose between a soup or dry base + spice level! Your bowl is taken back and brought to your table a cooked bowl of deliciousness!! Was super impressed with this spot and the service, it is a casual spot with a chill vibe for day or night! New favorite for sure!!!

Yelp
This whole time, I thought Yintang was more like Boiling Point or Tasty Pot, which is a predetermined set of items cooked into a pot for you. Instead, you get to choose exactly what you want and how much of each thing. Price is based off of the weight of your bowl, with a minimum of 1 lb per order. Grab a bowl and one of the clean tongs by the food station and start loading up your bowl! I was really impressed by their selection of hot pot food. The meat is a little lacking in variety but if you normally just get beef, you'll be alright here. They have a ton of seafood, fish balls, mushrooms and vegetables. The fish ball with roe is a must! Once you're satisfied, bring it to the front counter to weigh and to choose your soup base (or dry seasoning). Not much of a sauce bar here but they have the mains like sesame paste, soy sauce, chili oil, etc. Not much else to say for the food though. Nothing was undercooked and the flavor of the bone broth was really good. I can't imagine someone messing hot pot up unless it comes out still raw. If you have leftover, there's containers to bring everything back, including the broth. And if you'd like, there's to-go cups for the dipping sauce too.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Love this place!! You are assigned a table and then you get up and grab a bowl and start building all the toppings you want in your soup. The meats didn't look great so I stuck to vegetarian which was perfect. I got a mix of mushrooms, noodles, rice cakes, quail eggs, and a few veggies. I got bone broth mild spice which was pretty spicy for me since the spice builds up as you eat. There is also a sauce bar. $13.99/ lb dry ingredients and minimum of 1 lb. You pay after you eat. Very authentic and you get a free drink if you pay with cash or check in and post a picture on Yelp.

Yelp
I was immediately intrigued by the novelty of the choose-your-own-ingredient concept at Yintang. Upon arriving, they will assign you a table, then you simply grab a bowl, some tongs, and get to work. I tried a bunch of different items but my favorites were the enoki mushrooms, quail eggs, and sweet potato vermicelli. I wasn't a huge fan of the beef as it became pretty tough after cooking in the broth. Everything is clearly labeled above the ingredient bar in case you're unfamiliar with any of the ingredients. After adding ingredients, take your bowl to the counter to choose your broth. I had the Tomyum broth with medium (level 3) spicy. It definitely cleared out my sinuses! They charge by the pound with a one pound minimum. I wasn't sure what a pound of food was supposed to look like and ended up with about 2.3 pounds after filling my bowl. You pay at the very end of the meal. I imagine this would be a great starting point for hotpot novices because you can try out new ingredients and add as much/as little as you like.

Yelp
Tried this spot after trying the Yintang in Mira Mesa and I'm glad I did. This spot feels more low-key than the Mira Mesa spot, waited here about 15min on a Saturday evening to get seated vs waited over an hour at the Mira Mesa location. They didn't have skewers here like the Mira Mesa location does but I definitely enjoyed the chill vibes here more. Build-your-own hotpot where you take a pot and add whatever ingredients you want, pay by the pound for your ingredients, select a soup/seasoning base and they take your pot and cook it for you. About $14/lb, 1lb minimum. I usually aim for around 1lb on the dot and find it to be just the right amount of food (smaller female) so the prices are very reasonable! The parking in this plaza as with most strip malls on Convoy is pretty notorious and gives me anxiety so I just opt for street parking on Engineer Rd. You'll usually find a street parking spot even during peak hours if you're willing to walk a couple of minutes.

Yelp
I've always wanted to try malatang since I've seen it all over my social media. My friend recommended this place and we went for dinner on a Friday night. Didn't have to wait too long, maybe about 10~ minutes for a party of 2. There are so many options for your hotpot ingredients and there is a sauce bar on the side to make your own sauce. I ordered the Tom yum broth w/ mild spice and it was so flavorful! It was just the right amount of spice, but slightly had a kick at the end. They also allow you to take your leftovers home! Also wanted to note that you should be prepared to wait a bit for your bowl to be cooked. Service was okay but would def would come again to try the other broths :)!!

Yelp
So I had to get some spicy hot pot per the recommendation by my mom, who's been here three times already! You start with a huge plastic bowl and load up on your ingredients! A lot of proteins, vegetables, and other ingredients to choose from! Then you pick your soup base. Afterward, you sit down and wait for them to bring your hot soup. You can also grab some condiments to add to your soup afterward. I like that this isn't the typical spicy hot pot place where you add the ingredients at the table. I got the beef broth base with multiple ingredients that included tilapia, shrimp, fish bun with squid ink, crab stick, bok choy, lotus, fresh noodles, fresh seaweed, and mushrooms. Tips: This is shareable with one other person! Especially if you go a little crazy with the ingredients, like I did. I ate mine for two days! This place can get quite busy, especially on holidays and weekends, so plan accordingly. One bundle of fresh noodles is actually a lot. They were short staffed the day we went, so be patient since there were only two ppl manning the front of the restaurant. I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
My best friend and I found Yintang through Yelp and decided to give it a try a couple of weeks ago. We were so happy to finally have spotted an affordable hotpot restaurant here in San Diego. For $13.99/lb, you can customize your dish to your own preference: your own choice of broth, customizable sauces/dips, endless choices of hotpot ingredients and even the amount of each of those ingredients. The ambiance of the place was casual and easy. You are seated to a table and you're able to start customizing as soon as you can. You start with picking out your ingredients, and proceed to the cashier to get it weighed. Ours weighed about less than 1.5 lbs each and paid around $23/person, and even had more than enough for leftovers. They cook everything for you and come in a large bowl - unlike a traditional hotpot experience where you dip all your ingredients in a pot over open fire. I thought this was pretty nice as it eliminated the wait of cooking your food, however, we did find that our meat was a little bit overcooked due to not having control in the cooking process. The broth was okay, nothing too special but adding spice to it took it to another level.

Yelp
I absolutely love Yintang, you have full control of what you're paying for and how much food you're eating. Although there is a one pound limit. They also offer rice so you don't have to get noodles. Some of my favorite toppings are beef, mushrooms, and potatoes but they have so much variety. They also have a sauce bar that I absolutely love!

Yelp
YinTang is one of my new fav hotspot places. I love the Mira Mesa location more for sure but Convoy is pretty nifty too when you are in the area !! Love so many noodle and fresh vegetable options along with 2 choices of vegetarian broth - that's a big plus. Also, its well maintained and they are fast too. Here's a little video of the experience: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C13glW1rI7A/

Yelp
A great place for hotpot/soup lovers where you pick the ingredients and they'll make it for you with your choice of soup stock. I am not a spicy fan so I went with the non-spicy classic beef broth, and it was delicious. I chose too many ingredients as it was my first time there and I wanted to try everything but I was able to finish 80% of it so I definitely got full. I'll definitely go back as it's fall/winter time and I'll have hotpot/soup during these colder months.

Yelp
I was craving hot pot and decided to try a new way of ordering it, since this place is not an AYCE, but rather you weight what you pick and pay per pound and then choose the broth base. I chose the mild beef bone broth which i guess is considered the regular spice level. After that, you wait for your bowl to be brought to you. No cooking involved! The other nice thing is that because you are paying for your food per pound, you can take it home unlike the AYCE resturants! The only thing I would have liked more of, is a variety of meats than what they already had. They also have skewers displayed which you can choose from and they vary in price from $1.99 and up. I really liked the gizzards. Those also you choose at the beginning and then they are brought out to you fully cooked. Overall, I enjoyed the food and experience. I will definitely come back!

Yelp
We tried this spicy hot pot spot & loved all of the options! They have tons of skewers and options to put in the broth. It's a great spot for an authentic meal. They had parking close by and a good atmosphere! The service is fast, perfect for a night out.

Yelp
Tried Yintang Spicy Hotpot last week with a friend! Heard great things about the place and taste of the broth from a friend who has been back repeatedly so I had to give this a try! Wasn't sure of the process, there wasn't anyone asking if this was our first time or explain the process so we just watched what others were doing and did the same. The concept is building your own bowl and grabbing food items as you wanted. You then take it up to the front and they weigh your items and ask to you choose your soup base. This was perfect for me as I don't eat a ton and 1lbs of meats and veggies was perfect. Broth was good and the employees I did interact with were friendly! Place was clean and employees restocked items in a timely manner

Yelp
Came across this place while visiting convoy at and it definitely did not disappoint. It's $13.99 a lb but the skewers were seperate. You can choose your own ingredient and they have a variety. The service was ok and the ambiance was nice. They have 4 different types of broth which ordinal, tomatoes, Tom yum and dry hot pot. They have lots of ingredients and definitely a must come.

Yelp
This pace is still a go to spot for a place to eat with friends. I usually get the original beef broth and get the spiciest option. The service is pretty quick even when it is busy.

Yelp
This place was worth the wait and hype! We tried both the skewers and soup and both were so good. It was fun because you have so many options to choose from in the skewer section and I loved the beef and quail eggs. The servers were friendly and helped us when we were weighing the food and delivery of our food to our table. It's nice and clean inside, with bright lights which made it nice. Only thing is it's small in here for as busy as it is, other than that it's a good place to check out.

Yelp
This hotpot hotspot is by far my favorite! The concept is incredibly unique and the variety of choices is delightfully overwhelming. Here are some tips to enhance your experience: Don't get overwhelmed by the vast selection like I did. Instead of piling everything that looks good into your bowl, stick to a theme and focus on what you truly enjoy. Remember, the more you add, the higher the cost, and it's impossible to savor every single item. For example, I once added six kinds of meat, two fish balls, two dumplings, two types of tofu, six vegetables, and two types of noodles, which ended up being too much. Next time, I'll stick to seafood, veggies, tofu, and the amazing glass noodles. Speaking of which, the glass noodles are fantastic, with both big, fat, flat ones and the standard super thin variety. There are so many types of noodles, including different ramen styles, that it's hard to resist adding everything to your bowl. One highlight was the octopus; I expected small calamari but was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful large octopus tentacles. The variety of food available is truly impressive and what makes this place so special. While the ambiance and service might not be top-notch, the food more than makes up for it. It would be helpful if the restaurant displayed more photos of perfectly combined bowls to give customers some inspiration. As for sauces, the dry spicy sauce wasn't my favorite, but next time I'll opt for a completely dry mix without the spicy pepper sauce, which was too peppery for my taste. The restaurant offers a fantastic range of side sauces, including peanut sesame, green onion, cilantro vinegar, sugar, hot chili oil, and soy sauce, allowing you to create your own dipping sauce or additive. I made a delicious dipping sauce with peanut sesame and regular sugar, which I'll definitely use on my next visit. I'm already dreaming of returning!

Yelp
location: in the same plaza as bonchon and eastern dynasty parking: free lot, but it is difficult to find a spot during peak hours wait: we waited 20 mins for a table on a Saturday night how it works: once you're seated, you can go to the back of the restaurant where you grab a big plastic bowl and fill it up with ingredients (e.g., thinly sliced beef, lamb, vegetables, noodles) to put in your hot pot. once you're done, an employee weighs your ingredients and sends it to the kitchen. you also choose which broth and spice level you'd like! price: $13.99/lb (you must order minimum 1 lb) main takeaway: this is one of my favorite places to eat in sd right now. it's a fun and enjoyable experience! they're reasonably priced and I love that you control what you'd like in your hot pot as well as the broth spice/flavor.
