We were visiting Honolulu from the mainland US and found this local gem. It was a 15min drive from Waikiki but definitely worthy. Most people were locals not tourists. I would definitely visit next trip to Honolulu. Great sushi

The portion sizes are very small for the price. To make matters worse, the clam soup had a very strong, fishy smell. I was quite disappointed with the overall quality.

One of the best omakase I have had in Honolulu. No fancy interior and yet is a total gem like family stable to go to. It does remind me of traditional Japanese family restaurants for locals in Japan

First time visit for a lunch. Friendly service, quality Japanese food was served. Everything we had was authentic taste to japan. We will be back!

From the moment I walked in, the service was outstanding—the staff was attentive, ensuring my tea and water were always full without me having to ask. The presentation of each dish was stunning, showcasing the chef’s artistry and attention to detail. Every bite was fresh and flavorful, making for a truly enjoyable meal. However, I wouldn’t recommend the meat options, as I found them lacking in flavor compared to the rest of the menu. That being said, everything else was delicious, and the ambiance made for a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. If you’re looking for beautifully plated sushi with top-notch service, this is definitely a spot worth visiting!

I forgot how good this old school Japanese restaurant was. Tempura was perfect!

I live in a landlocked state. And I thought I've had pretty good sushi. But this place is as authentic as you can get without traveling to the country of Japan itself. Generous cuts of fish. All super fresh, and an aesthetic that is old world Japan. You don't mind sushi being served in a more traditional way, this restaurant is for you. Highly recommended.

The food is always so good hear. You can't go wrong with anything you pick. The staff are very friendly and respectful. There is a decent amount of parking in the lot and there is also street parking. I really enjoy going here, so not sure why it took me so long to come back. Alooooooha and happy eating.

Stopped in for lunch without reservations. I guess we got lucky since we were early, like before 12 noon. Latest news is they will be open on Sundays; for lunch and dinner! Yay!

Met up with a friend for lunch here during the week, and even though I've been to this plaza countless times, this was actually my first time dining at Yohei. The food was so delicious and such a great value! Their lunch sets are fantastic, lots of variety, so there's definitely something for everyone. I went with the ahi belly teishoku, which came with soba noodles, rice, miso soup, and pickled veggies. My friend ordered the sushi teishoku with tempura, and both meals were super satisfying. Service was quick and friendly, and the "aunties" working there make you feel right at home. Definitely a spot I'll be back to when I'm visiting again!

Went in on a Friday nite and enjoyed the omakase $130 with 13/14 different selections of the best fish. Ranging from otoro, snapper, uni, kinmeidai. Very fresh and perfectly seasoned , authentic Japanese sushi! Quaint ambiance with attentive service.

The food was delicious! If you like fish I highly recommend the miso black cod! It was so buttery and tender melt in your mouth good. We also got a tempura sashimi set to share. The service was amazing it felt so welcoming and warm. I would definitely recommend this place!

With very friendly / helpful staff, great food, and a clean but neighborly feel, Yohei Sushi is one of the best, approachable japanese restaurants in the area. While the outside of the building shows its age, the inside looks fresh and was filled with customers. Hot tea was included for all the adults. Ordered a variety of sets that included udon, sashimi, tempura, and ahi belly katsu. Everything tasted great and used quality ingredients. Balancing an authenticity to its recipes versus a small, neighborhood restaurant feel, Yohei is a must stop for anyone looking for good japanese food that is approachable and family friendly.

Food is delicious. Great service. Nice and comfortable place to sit. They have pillow that you can use to rest your back. Very comfy.

Had dinner here with my boyfriend for a date night and we both really enjoyed it. Food and service were both great! We both ordered teishoku sets so it had a main plus several little sides, miso soup, udon (they allowed my boyfriend to substitute soba) and dessert. I had the nigiri and the rice balls were the perfect size so the fish really stood out. My boyfriend ordered the unagi and he really enjoyed it as well. Unfortunately we weren't sure exactly what all the sides were but they all tasted good. If you really want to know the sides the servers didn't seem to mind answering any questions. The couple next to us were asking about certain sides they had. We also shared the medium tempura set, anago nigiri, and soft shell crab. I personally love soft shell crab and felt that they prepared it really well. Service was also great. Multiple servers would always come by to check on us or refill water/tea. Overall really great dinner and looking forward to try other stuff on the menu one day! Glad they are doing well despite the construction in the area!

I'm a bit surprised to have came to this place on a Wednesday, except it wasn't with the friend I usually go with once each month. It was with my family, and with someone from my mom's side of the family. I never visited Yohei Sushi, nor have heard of it, despite having passed it multiple times when I have gone to a UH game, to Lanakila Pacific, or to go out lunch with a friend. Even at times to hang out, if necessary. Somehow, I didn't think it was across from Honolulu Community College and a half block down from 7-11. The place screams Japanese, from the decor to the appearance, and it looked nice upon entering. So...as far as what I went to eat at the time, I tried one of their specials, which was the cracker chicken set, and boy did they deliver well on the presentation. I nearly thought I was gonna get full much earlier considering that I went to Jack-In-The-Box and had a Jumbo Jack and two tacos for lunch at the time after I left Lanakila Pacific. I don't really know how I managed to eat all of what I ate at the time, but somehow I got through it. The workers were pretty nice in terms of giving me and my family a good time there. All in all, the overall experience wasn't bad at all. Would I recommend coming here? I wouldn't mind coming back there again if given another opportunity.

Had a great dinner a few days ago. When ownership first changed a few years ago, we had a disappointing experience -- but maybe they worked out the bugs, because the last 2 times have been great. Total bill with tax was $115 -- but that included several beers and side order of chawanmushi. I was very happy with the misobutterfish (large piece, delicious) and the salmon sashimi which was very fresh (firm but buttery). Can't wait to return.

Yohei Sushi Stumbled upon this place in a small strip mall near Costco and were gifted with one of the most incredible dining experiences. We were seated at the sushi bar and offered two cups of hot tea by our incredibly kind hostess. As other parties entered, they were greeted warmly by the staff and it seemed to be a family-type establishment. We ordered two Teishoku sets - one seafood tempura and one sashimi + tempura. The plate had a bowl of rice (which they offered to refill at any point), delicious miso soup, cold and refreshing soba noodles, sauteed greens, and crisp japanese pickles. The tempura batter was phenomenal - it was crunchy even after cooling down towards the end of the meal. They had a wide variety of vegetables and seafood in the tempura mix, including what appeared to be a crab maki roll. The sashimi was perfect - thick slices with fish that tasted out of this world. It was also incredibly affordable for the amount of food we got - cannot wait for another meal at Yohei!!

I personally like seafood tempura more than the regular tempura. The dipping sauce works well with the tempura. There's shrimp, scallop, crab, and ahi. One of the special was chicken karaage with ahi set. The tartar sauce is home made and was very good. Service is great as always. Very clean and comfortable.

Yohei Sushi, one of just a few local traditional japanese restaurants left that have been around since I was growing up. Don't let the rail construction hinder you from visiting this gem of a place on Dillingham. The service is always on point and the special made you just full and not too full where you needed to ask the rail construction people to borrow their equipment and haul you out. Since you are in the area don't forget to visit Nisshodo which is right around the corner for some fresh mochi.

Damn, where do I begin? I come to this place twice a month mainly for their seafood tempura, which consists of crab meat, shrimp, scallops, and occasional green beans. The seafood tempura I usually order comes in a set with some traditional Japanese side dishes and cold soba noodles. I also like to order the otoro and shrimp on the side. The servers are old Japanese ladies who will often come around and refill your cha or water. They are extremely friendly and most of the time tentative when the place is not busy. It is best to call and make a reservation because the place gets real busy at certain times. This place is a must try for those who enjoy a somewhat traditional Japanese restaurant that serves fresh seafood. Enjoy!

Onoliscious! Great food, awesome staff, traditional music and they all spoke Japanese. What a wonderful place to spend an afternoon catching up eating great food and enjoying epic company.

If your not a regular at this restaurant the service sucks ! I ordered our food and waited a long time people who came after us who sat at the bar got the same food we ordered before us ! The sushi chef has bad attitude Our sushi took for ever to come but everyone who sat on the sushi bar was getting served. I will never eat at this place again and would never recommend it ! Service sucks

Where to begin... Setting is modern, upscale, warm, and inviting. Service was impeccable, so kudos to Miyazaki-San and my waiter. Plus I've never been given a free drink before by any restaurant (not sure if this was a limited promo), but that was a pleasant surprise! I also appreciated the souvenir given to me! Food was exceptional: I especially recommend the Shrimp Tempura chef selection as it was the best tempura I've probably ever had. Likewise, I hope they consider adding the Ume Tempura as a standalone appetizer in the future (I could eat like 10 orders of that easily). Wagyu (Miyazaki A5) was pretty good too, I don't know specifically what the cut was, but it was cooked to my preference and the accompaniments were a fresh diversion from the fattiness of the Wagyu. That being said, my only gripe was that a couple of the thicker end pieces were a little bit fattier than I usually like (despite being a Wagyu connoisseur, I'm not the biggest fan of fatty parts of steaks in general - some people live for that though), but still worth a try if you've never had Wagyu (order it medium because the fat renders better imo). Overall, I'd give them a 9.8/10 and would definitely recommend them to anyone; I will also be back the next time I visit to try their Omakase! One thing I wanted to address while I am here is that I know before I came that I read some of the other reviews about prices being a little expensive, but 1) it's a restaurant in Waikiki and 2) they serve quality local and imported ingredients. You don't want to compromise on the latter especially when you're on vacation since getting food poisoning would cost you way more, but that's just my 2 cents.

Decided to try Yohei last night because my bf was craving sushi. We called around 7:45pm to see if they had a table available for us & they said yes. When we got there, the restaurant was pretty packed even though they closed at 9. The restaurant itself is small, but they can fit a good amount of people. We had to wait a little for our table, but it wasn't a problem. Once we got seated, our orders were taken within 5 minutes. I must say the service was awesome & the food came out within 10 minutes. My bf & I were definitely impressed with the service! The workers were very kind & you could tell they love working there. The food was delicious as well. I had the nabeyaki udon & my bf had one of the sushi sets. Can't wait to come back here again soon!

Decided to try Yohei Sushi Restaurant today in Dillingham after not going there for awhile because we live so far. The service was great, after taking my order they immediately brought me an extra plate, utensils and a spill proof cup with water in it for my 3 year old grandson, without me even asking. The food came out promptly and our sushi did also. We had a very delicious lunch.

Had to go back the next day and have the chirashizushi! Wow! Ono! Rice was seasoned well and seafoods fresh. A thin layer of fresh veggies added a delightful flavor to each bite.

It's been a few years since I've been back here. I used to bring my mom here at least twice a month to eat sushi, it was one of her favorite places for sushi. She passed away some years back and since I had a visitor who wanted good sushi I made reservations for lunch on a Monday. I wondered if the ownership changed because there were a few differences from the Yohei I remembered. We both ordered soba sushi combinations. I opted for the cold soba and I was so disappointed. The key to good soba is to obtain the perfect doneness of the noodle. There needs to be an al dente chewiness to the soba. Sadly, my noodles were overcooked and soft, and the tsuyu (dipping sauce) was too dilute for my preference. The sushi came with excellent quality fish but it was the smallest sushi I've seen, pretty disappointing. My lunch guest was from Sacramento and she said that she enjoyed her meal, but I don't know if she really knows what good sushi and soba are supposed to be like. I used to really like eating sushi here and probably won't be back because there are a ton of good restaurants to choose from.

We have eaten here a number of times and love it. very nice staff and tasty food. It has felt like we were visiting Japan. The last time, something felt missing. The service was less attentive and the Sushi Zen felt and tasted average. We will be back though.

I have not been to Yohei in years and couldn't wait to go again. We had a decent sized party so I had called the restaurant to make reservations. The person who answered the phone was friendly and quite pleasant to talk to. I received confirmation via text and it was displayed on my open table app. We went for lunch and it was a bit crowded, however we did not have to wait since our table was ready. I ordered the misoyaki butterfish teishoku and a chawanmushi. When I got my food, presentation was on point. It was on a tray with small little dishes. The portion size was great...a nice sized misoyaki butterfish. The teishoku came with rice, miso soup, tsukemono and soba. All I can say is, I savored every bite. Everything was delicious. The chawanmushi was hot and had a good flavor to it. The butterfish had just enough miso and the fish was soft and delicious. For dessert, I decided to get the shiratama. It comes with either vanilla or green tea ice cream, mochi balls, homemade azuki, with kinako and brown sugar syrup drizzled on top. I got mines with green tea ice cream. The homemade azuki was exceptional. Not too sweet and just the right texture. I definitely enjoyed everything that I had. Service was good too. Everyone was so nice and exemplified great customer service.

I was invited to dinner at Yohei Sushi Restaurant for the holidays. It is located off Dillingham Blvd. in a tiny strip mall that IMO has seen better days. The restaurant is quaint and simple! What stands out for me, since I arrived before the other guests is the welcoming and gracious staff. Service is impeccable here. Everyone at the table ordered one of their set (Teishoku) meals. I ordered the Unagi Zen Yohei Special. Everyone at the table was happy with their food. I loved what I ordered, which was prepared perfectly. The food here is in my opinion excellent. They have an extensive menu, a sushi bar and also serve alcohol. I heard from friends they are opening another branch in the Ku'ono Marketplace across Kahala Mall. Looking forward to dining at their new location. Highly recommend! Posting a photo of my meal.

Classy Japanese restaurant! Amazing teishoku. Husband and I returned here after about 3 years to celebrate our anniversary. The waitresses are always kind and wear a neat apron. They greet and say farewell here enthusiastically. Plenty of parking. Do not let The Rail construction traffic deter you. I recommend if you dine here to set aside more than an hour to supremely enjoy your food and the customer service.

I cannot believe I only tried Yohei Sushi Restaurant recently because it's my new favorite place for lunch. I'm sure dinner is just as good but I went for lunch and LOVED everything! I tried the maguro natto don, zaru soba, ika sashimi, and some other nigiri sushi. My maguro natto don was so fresh and delicious. It was also only $18 and a very good size. Everything was so fresh and reasonably priced. Service there is also exceptional. The waitresses are sweet, attentive, and very polite. I cannot wait to go back already and I just went last week! It's a small place but the waitress said they take reservations. We did a walk in on a Monday for lunch and it was about half filled so no wait for us thankfully. I'll definitely be back!

An absolute gem! We came by for dinner on a rainy night and just had a great experience. It seemed that everyone else here was a local and some even had their usual table and usual order known by the staff. The menu and sets felt so authentic to Japan, I was so happy. The food was just what I was hoping, great variety in each set. Staff was kind and attentive and I am so happy we got to experience this lovely mom and pop shop.

I've been here a couple of times, the first time I had the miso butter fish; it was good but it was tiny, luckily I wasn't hungry. The bento box was overpriced at $39 for the small portion size. My most recent visit, I had sushi & tempura bento box, the tempura was delicious, sushi was average. Overall, food was good but pricy.

Yohei Sushi has been my favorite Japanese restaurant, west of Ala Moana, for decades. Our favorite neighborhood restaurant. The food is always excellent. The construction is making it a little difficult but it is not as bad as some people think. It is worth the inconvenience. It was to our advantage- we got reservations at the last minute.

Fresh Sushi. Very attentive service. Ahi Steak Teishoku at $26 is the best value on island. $35 sushi plate includes chutoro, hamachi etc. One of our "go to" places.

Excellent comes to mind considering food, service, and ambiance! Lunched on a Monday, place was busy. Gathering place for friends, business clients, colleagues, people returning from Japan seeking Authentic Japanese food, couples... Greeted upon entering and thanked when leaving. Staff very focused on THEIR restaurant! Food so fresh and delicious!

Yohei Sushi is one of my legit Japanese restaurants here in Hawaii. The only downside is that the tables are spaced so closely. My daughter and I called for a 12:40 reservation at about 12:00 and they were able to accommodate us! The service was on point on this day as there were only 2 other tables occupied when we arrived. Our waters and tea cups were kept full throughout our meal. As for the food, a legit teishoku meal which was beautifully presented. The piece is kinda high, but I'd say it's in line with other Japanese places. Although it was pretty empty on the day we went, I'd recommend reservations as I've been there when it was packed.

My girlfriend and I along with another couple went to Yohei last Saturday ...the two couples all ordered but prior to ordering we asked for separate checks ... the waitress said that was fine ..our orders came and I had the wrong order.. I questioned the waitress but since it was prior to Mother's Day I didn't want to wait another 25 minutes for the reorder .. the bill comes and it's one bill ... we then ask her she needs to separate the bill .. she goes back and finally we get the two separate checks per couple. I was not pleased that evening and gave a 15% tip... to my surprise this morning the final bill closed this morning and Yohei bumped the tip up to 20% ... I have never seen that from any restaurant...I will not go back there again. Please check your bill once it's posted ... this restaurant is DISHONEST!!!

I have to preface this review by saying that the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because of their nabeyaki udon. Their service is 5 stars all the way! Continuing on my search for the best nabeyaki in Honolulu, I came across Yohei Sushi on Yelp. The photos of the nabeyaki looked fantastic. The price... not so much. The last menu I saw online showed $19. That's a bit high in my book, yet I decided to give it a go. I called to make a reservation, as I had read that it gets crowded. I'm glad that I did! I was the first one there at 5pm and by the time I left, the place was almost full. I could tell that many of the customers were regulars, as the staff greeted them by name. They're located in a run-down shopping center off of Dillingham Blvd., near U Kitchen. Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. It looks sketchy on the outside, but once you walk inside it's a warm and inviting Japanese restaurant. They have a small sushi bar, as well as various sized tables. As soon as I entered, I was greeted by the friendly Japanese staff. They quickly brought out my water, green tea and menu. I placed my order fairly quickly since I already knew what I wanted. Unfortunately to my surprise, I noticed that the nabeyaki price had been raised to $23! Wow, that's the most expensive bowl of nabeyaki I've ever had. Unfortunately the nabeyaki did not live up to the price tag... not even close. The broth was just average and there weren't as many ingredients as other nabeyaki's I've had. There was no cabbage or shiitake mushroom or mochi. It was basically udon with an egg, fish cake, 1 shrimp tempura and very few small pieces of chicken. In my opinion, it was more like a $15 bowl as opposed to $23. I probably wouldn't return in the future because everything seemed overly priced, not just the nabeyaki.

A friend recommended we dine here. He loves this place and takes his wife often on Saturday's. We stopped by and had an excellent lunch! Very friendly staff and service was terrific. The food was delicious! We'll be back many more times!

Amazing. This place was perfect. As a parent, my son loved it. 100 percent recommend. Also the hot tea was great.

I ate lunch here twice in ten days . Seemed like traditional Japanese food. Service was attentive and gracious. Food was delicious. A great hidden gem.

Nine of us around the table. No complaints. Tekamaki pupu was fresh made. Diners around the table were happy w quantity and quality. Fresh fish. Good rice. Fresh veggies on the plates. Tempura was light and not oil soaked. The slice of daikon under the sashimi was white and crisp. Paid $30 corkage for a bottle of sake I brought from Japan. Service was attentive and excellent. The room is relatively small but people came and went frequently so you know there is adequate food and good service to keep this place going. Definitely a return to try more menu features is warranted.

Just ordered from them via uber. The salmon sashimi that was part of the bento tasted spoiled and left a rancid fishy flavor in my mouth. Beyond that the grilled salmon was pretty tasty though. Wouldn't order anything raw from here again but would still be willing to try the other cooked items if they are as good as that grilled salmon.

I called the restaurant last month if possible i used the Paper gifts certificate. The employee I spoke to said yes! I still can used it she check the certificate numbers information. I Called today the restaurant if possible If I can still used the gift certificate with no expire date that member give for all employees for Christmas. The employee at the restaurant who doesn't want to state her name because they do not take paper gifts certificate anymore , they told me the certificate is invalid to used because they change owner. The name of the restaurant still the same on the gift certificate, they can't even accommodate the gifts certificate that the member bought from their restaurant worth $200.00.

New owners... Used to be one of my fav places for lunch by my office. Will prob not be back after last visit. Menu is a little different and quality isn't the same. Service was lacking and not as attentive as it's been. Sad day.

Went to dinner a few weeks ago with my uncle and family, there was seven people in our party. The portions didn't look very big but we were very full by the end of our meal. Presentation is beautiful, everything was as delicious as it looked. Service wasn't the quickest but everything was made to order so I didn't expect it to be a quick dinner but we were here for a few hours.

Highly recommend! Small, old school Japanese restaurant but the food is delicious, the service is good and the ambiance is reminiscent of back in the day when your grandparents took you to eat out. Make a reservation this placed is always packed!

We came here the other week for dinner, a real dinner in the actual restaurant. It's so so much better than doing take out. Take out is so impersonal and it just doesn't showcase what this restaurant offers. From the moment we stepped in, someone came to help us. We quickly got a table and serviced. I love the older Japanese ladies coming to check on you and being so grateful when you leave. I think all of us the combination udon and tendon bowls. I really like that they have a set like that. I ate every last bite of it, it was delicious. I hope to keep coming back here. Great service and great food.
