The Best Restaurants in Camden

"Descend a staircase on Delancey Street to enter one of London’s only proper izakayas, an atmospheric basement bar with perfunctory wooden booths, plenty of bar stools and a largely Japanese staff and clientele. As with any izakaya worth its salt, the focus is on booze, with the holy trinity of shochu, sake, and beer flowing freely (with a decent selection of Japanese single malts for good measure). The simple but delicious food is a perfect accompaniment: start with small plates like silky mackerel and seabass sashimi — otoro is also available — before moving to more robust dishes like husky nuggets of chicken karaage, à la mode katsu sandos, or grilled onglet with sweet yakiniku sauce." - David Paw

An Unforgettable Izakaya Experience – A True Hidden Gem in London! What an incredible dining experience! We had the Izakaya course meal and every single dish was absolutely fabulous. The highlight for me was the sashimi – without a doubt, the freshest and most perfectly prepared I’ve ever had, even compared to top spots in Japan. THE OCTOPUS AND ASPARAGUS DISH IS A MUST-HAVE (see pics)! Chef Makoto is a true master of his craft – you can taste the passion, precision, and authenticity in every bite. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, making it feel like a secret escape to Japan right in the heart of London. This restaurant is a rare find – a genuine hidden gem that deserves to be on every food lover’s list. If you’re looking for an unforgettable Japanese dining experience, this is the place. I can’t wait to come back!

Wow. By far the best authentic Japanese restaurant in London. Chef Makoto-San is a master of his craft and the entire team give the very best service. The 7 or 10 course set menu changes every month and champions unique and seasonal Japanese ingredients. This is not a place to miss out on - pure culinary bliss! 👌🏼☺️

Delicious, under-the-radar spot for authentic kaiseki - each dish was simple yet so flavourful and unique, and the ingredients are super fresh and seasonal. We did the sake pairing, which went so well with the food. Staff are super friendly and welcoming, feels so cozy and familial. Can’t recommend enough, hope to be back soon!

This is the best Japanese food we’ve had in London. We’ve had both Izakaya (small plates) and the Omakase (tasting menu) several times here and the food is absolutely outstanding. The host is so welcoming and is always willing to give you help, advice and tasters to give you the best options that work for you. We absolutely love it here and it will always be our go to restaurant whenever a special occasion arises.

YoKOYA feels like stepping into a Japanese home: warm, authentic, and deeply thoughtful. It’s not about flashy decor, but about honest, beautiful food crafted with care. Prices reflect the quality and soul behind each dish. A true hidden gem!

It seems like the place is about to go out of business. I saw the owner making food while drinking alcohol, and it felt like the customer turnover was quite low. I sometimes hear people fighting the back office. The food is good, but the price doesn’t really match the quality. We were the only customers in the restaurant, which gave the impression that the business might be struggling.

I think I’ve discovered one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London! The menu and food are authentic, the service is warm and welcoming and the experience felt like being a guest in a Japanese home. We visited on Saturday to try their kaiseki menu and it was delicious. The portions were generous, making it excellent value for money at £160, especially compared to other omakase experiences in London. My favourites of the menu were the sashimi, "zenzai", sukiyaki and the sushi. Yoko was great, providing detailed explanations of each dish and Chef Makoto performed the tea ceremony at the end where he made it fun. I can’t wait to return for the izakaya menu!
