Where to Sip Indulgent Milkshakes Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Rockville is home to this Caribbean ice cream shop with a range of tropical fruit flavors. Malt heads should try the Slim Jim, a mix of Guinness ice cream, Malta soda, peanuts, and Horlicks malted milk powder. Or try a shake in flavors like guava, mango, pineapple, soursop, passionfruit, or lychee blended with skim milk."

Another shop I meant to try for a while and I wasn't disappointed. It offers many tropical flavors. its ice cream is very creamy and isn't overly too sweet. 👍 Lastly It's portion is very generous.

Google
Loved it! Took my family here and the workers were so patient and friendly letting us try all their delicious flavors. Best ice cream I’ve had in a long time - light, creamy, fresh. I’ve never had those flavors before, so unique and refreshing! 10/10

Alexander Falatovich

Google
Satisfying portion sizes. Nice creamy texture. The ginger ice cream had a stronger flavor than the tamarind, which was a little mild, but both were good.

Google
The ice cream is delicious. BUT They suppose to open at 12p…. We’ve been waiting since before 12p and it is 12:21p now. No one in sight to open the store. Very disappointed

Google
The tastiest ice cream around. It's perfect. Grapefruit is my favorite. My family loves the tropical flavors. The owner, Mr Hedley, I believe his name is very personable.

Google
York Castle Ice Cream is absolutely fabulous. Hands down personal service and the best ice cream on the Pike. Taste a couple very exotic flavors and you'll be good, ooh so so good. Keep in mind sometimes they don't open on time, have faith they will open as soon as they can. Parking is abundant and free. It's like a quick trip to the islands, with our all that travel hassle. Beware this place and all is flavors are addictive, you've been warned. Don't forget to tip your super duper scooter.

Google
Ice cream at its greatest. Homemade, fresh, rich, and smooth. Lots of flavors to choose from. We got black cherry and chocolate on a waffle cone - and a cup of mango and pina colada. We saw someone order one of the specialty menu items and wish we tried that because it looked amazing… but all of it was so good. Excellent quality and taste!

Google
The sign said open but the doors are closed at this time between 8:30 pm - 9pm. Been waiting almost 30mjns outside the business to get ice cream with my kids. a lot of the customers did not wait and left. Very inconvenient

Yelp
I have driven past this place for years and I finally decided that a sunny spring day was the perfect time to try it. The servers are friendly and are happy to let you taste the flavors. The tropical flavors are unusual for me and I really enjoyed them. The serving size was huge. The ice cream tasted fresh and creamy. Considering this place is sandwiched between Rockville Pike and the metro tracks and is next to a seafood market, the outside seating was pleasant.

Yelp
Ice cream is SOOOOO good. Sully is the nicest guy too. I moved to VA a while ago and I will still sometimes come back just to buy ice cream from them. Great small business

Yelp
One of my favorite ice cream spots in the DMV, known for their unique tropical fruit flavors - definitely try these if you go. My favorites are the lychee, mango, and guava. Super refreshing and creamy, especially on a hot summer day. They do some samples, which is nice. The only thing is the girl working there always seems slightly annoyed. Will definitely be back when I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best options for ice cream in Maryland, with many flavors that you can't find anywhere else like Lychee, Lucyma, and Passionfruit. The portions are huge and the ice cream is flavorful.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is so good! Hands down some of the best ice cream I've had and some of the most innovative flavors I've seen at an ice cream shop. They specialize in tropical flavors from guava to passion fruit to even sour sop. For those who are unfamiliar with some of these ethnic fruits, they also have descriptions inside which is such a nice touch. I had the guava and it was a 10/10. It is a small shop with a few seats outside with plenty of parking. The service was also quick!
google avatar

Alea V.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a couple of years, but I LOVE the new flavors. I got a cup of the guava and can't wait to get the passion fruit next time. I'm so happy they are diversifying the flavors, but I of course couldn't leave without a pint of the rum raisin. They make their own ice cream so it always tastes fresh and doesn't have that artificial flavor some places have. It's definitely a must try for any dessert lovers who find themselves in the Montgomery county area

Yelp
The servings sizes are HUGE! I really appreciated the signage in the shop explaining the different flavors for the more tropical fruits. I also appreciated their offer to taste test two flavors. Soursop - part of my partners order. I liked the taste initially but wasn't a fan of the after taste. It would probably be a lot more enjoyable in a shake because I liked it better when paired with the passion fruit. Lucuma - tried this as one of the samples. I wasn't as big of a fan but I enjoyed the experience. I could see myself trying it again if I ever traveled to Peru. Guava - got this as part of my three scoop order. It was very enjoyable and has a floral undertone to it's taste. Mamey Sapote - got this as part of my three scoop order. I really liked this one. It's not fruity like the others and has a nice warm, cozy taste to it. Not surprising as the signs said it tastes like pumpkin and sweet potato. Passion Fruit - part of my partner's order. Very delicious! Mango - got this as part of my three scoop order. I really like it! Ginger - tried this as one of the samples. It was good! Creamy and then has a wonderful spicy delayed after-taste.

Yelp
Walked in at 8:20 pm (closes at 9 pm) Friday always wanted to check this place out as many times as I have driven past it and it's never busy. A guy comes out and says I'm in break for 15 minutes. Found that odd for the last hour before closing - assumed no one else is available to dish out ice cream? He walks in back and I hear another guy laughing (?). I will not ever return,

Laurenn W.

Yelp
They need to fire the dude who was working the cash register today around 1pm, super rude, and will drive customers away. I was willing to spend way more money, but decided not to just because of how bad the service was.

Yelp
Update to 5 stars!!! You must try their Swedish Chocolate flavors. Truly from out of this world. We ended up bringing a quart home :)

A L.

Yelp
I love their ice cream but why does the store say open, the door is unlocked, and there is no one attending the customers? Such a bummer because it was a beautiful day for an ice cream.
google avatar

Alisha B.

Yelp
Whew!!! Be careful with this place! You will easily go here frequently with no shame! Yum. Yum and super yum!
google avatar

Van B.

Yelp
Such a well done excellence place. Nostalgic, considered that I and many customers are from similar regions that have the taste of these rare fruits hard to find here. Even better when it's in the form of good ice cream!! Their brownie is to die for. Only places to sit outside though.

Tania M.

Yelp
Wonderful exotic tropical fruit flavored ice cream! Small batch and authentic! An amazing treat!

Su W.

Yelp
As an ice cream connoisseur, I'm intrigued! I passed by countless times but finally decided to give it a try. I saw tropical flavors I never heard of, like mamey sapote, which really did taste like some version of a sweet potato. It's so memorable since I cannot name an ice cream shop similar to this. The inside is a bit cramped and they only have outdoor seating, but plenty of parking outside. Now being based in LA, AKA food haven central, but haven't found a gem like this. I'll be on a hunt for one!
google avatar

Dee D.

Yelp
For as long as I lived here, this is the first time I've stopped at this gem. We tried the Guinness- jr. size, grape nut - small and a large butter pecan. The ice cream is cream and not too sweet tasting. The server was pleasant. The place was clean. There are tables outside for summer days. We enjoyed it and will return.

Yelp
SO EXCITED ABOUT YORK CASTLE! This Jamaican owned and operated ice cream spot is a must-visit for all ice cream enthusiasts. Apparently, the name York Castle is derived from a combination of two places in Jamaica: Chester Castle and York Penn. As soon as you step inside, you'll be greeted with a wide variety of fantastic flavors, all made in-house =D Their menu features unique flavors like lucama, soursop, guava, and more! The pricing leans towards the pricier side, but I think it's because of the fruits they use - they source directly from the Caribbean + South America. You can get one scoop for $6.29, two scoops for $7.29, and three scoops for $8.29. If you're feeling indecisive like I was (bahahaha), you can opt for the 1/2 & 1/2 scoop for the same price of $6.29. While York Castle is famous for their rum raisin, I went for 1/2 mango and 1/2 coconut b/c I'm basic =P. The ice cream had a unique quality to it - it almost felt lighter? It was less sweet, but still maintained a beautiful texture and creaminess to it. Apart from their ice cream, you can also get shakes or hand-packed or pre-packed ice cream to go. SO nomtastic! Hope you guys go and enjoy.

Yelp
Caribbean ice cream is my all time favorite. Nothing like it. So when I heard about this place I just had to try it. It didn't disappoint. Rum Raisin was flavorful with right amount of raisins and texture as it should be. Also, had the Guinness Stout flavor ice cream which wasn't too strong or mild. One of my favorite flavors to enjoy together. Although it's a bit of a distance away it's worth the drive and I will definitely be back. They have many other flavors as well including non Caribbean. I highly suggest you give it a try.

Yelp
Love the Ginger Ice Cream! I no longer have to make sure I go to the farmers market in Durham to get Ginger ice cream !
google avatar

Nancy J.

Yelp
Wow what unique flavors! I got lychee and soursop in a waffle cone, it was amazing! Little expensive but worth it!
google avatar

Allen Q.

Yelp
York Castle was fantastic! We stopped by because we had lunch next door and were so glad we did - you won't find many of these flavors elsewhere. The girl that helped us was so nice and very patient as we asked to sample the unique flavors. We ended up getting a double scoop with lucuma and lychee - but it really seemed more like or quadruple scoop! They are very generous with scoop sizes. The lucuma was a delight to try and tasted almost like rum raisin, whereas the lychee was very fresh. Both had bits of fruit in them, which was a bonus! I would definitely stop by again if I'm ever back in the area.
google avatar

Xavier I.

Yelp
Probably the best ice cream in the area. The pineapple and mango flavors are easily my favorite and when you get them both in a combination, it's insanely delicious. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
Not good for people with nut allergies. They don't have an extra clean scooper to not mix the same scooper with all flavors.
google avatar

Sonny V.

Yelp
One of the best ice cream places in Rockville. The flavors are unique, with many flavors I haven't seen anywhere else. I strongly recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Madelyne V.

Yelp
This place is amazing. They make all of their ice creams and they have real pieces of fruit in it. I've tried coconut, passion fruit, guava, locuma, and soursop. All of the flavors are delicious but guava is my favorite by far. I highly recommend stopping by to try them out!
google avatar

Irene S.

Yelp
This is a small local shop you definitely want to visit! York Castle Ice cream is in a small little shop next to Cameron's seafood. The inside is basically like a kiosk, but there are tables outside to eat. You have various dessert options from ice creams to milkshakes to other options. For ice cream scoops, you can get them in various types of cones or in a cup. I personally went for 3 scoops since it's a deal (+1 dollar for each additional scoop) and got the mango, guava, and passionfruit. Although light ice cream, it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet and the tropical flavors definitely didn't taste artificial. There are even real pieces of fruit in the mango ice cream and others! My personal favorite is guava, because of how unique the flavor is yet how creamy their take of it is. Definitely check out this local shop on a hot summer day! You'll enjoy your ice cream a ton. :) The people working the stand were very welcoming too, which made the experience even better.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Solid ice cream with some rare tropical flavors. Kinda expensive for a small scoop at $6, and about half the menu wasn't available because they ran out. I got Soursop this time and its consistently good, very creamy and citrusy, kinda pineapple-y, and one of my favorites.

Mary B.

Yelp
My problem with this ice cream store is that they list swiss chocolate as one of their flavors, but they have been out of it for weeks, and they don't know when they will have it again. I love swiss chocolate and this is the only place that, supposedly, carries it.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream with unique flavors! My kids love the mango and lychee. There are real pieces of fruit in the ice cream. No seating inside, but there are tables for outdoor seating. On nice evenings there tends to be a long line.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I was craving ice cream on a hot Saturday afternoon, and this place was exactly what I was looking for! During COVID times, they enforce masks (thank goodness!), have a plexiglass divider, and only allow 4 people inside at a time. We tried lychee, guava, mango, lucuma and soursop. My favorite was the mango and lychee! All of the flavors were so fruity, creamy and refreshing. They also had a lot of other flavors, and some milkshake options as well. Highly recommend this place! By the time we left, there was a short line outside but it is worth the wait.
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
Definitely stop by and give it a try, at least once!! Pros: - Convenient to 355 - The mango ice cream is really tasty! - They use real fruit Cons: - The hours are weird, we've tried to stop by and they have been closed. - The guava flavor was just okay - The building could be updated Worth Noting: - There is no indoor seating - There are a few picnic tables outside - $5 minimum credit card charge

Yelp
Really special ice cream. My wife's family grew up on this. Especially the peach. I was a fan from the first spoonful. Note that Caribbean joint in Fredericksburg (Pimenta) has it, and I'm guessing other restaurants as well. Keep your eyes peeled if you're in the region, but not Silver Spring. Keep up the excellent work, York Castle! Truly top shelf!

Davina S.

Yelp
Amazing tropical ice cream flavors, including tamarind and my favorite, Rum Raison. The owner Kal is from Jamaica and specializes in fruit from the tropical. He worked at The legendary old Gifford Ice Cream until it closed.

Radhika K.

Yelp
The soursop and ginger ice cream was some of the best ice cream I've ever had. You get so much ice cream in just one scoop (i did the 1/2 and 1/2 of each flavor). I need to be back! It's a small shop but worth the visit
google avatar

Jesse C.

Yelp
If you are in Rockville, you should def give this place a try. It's unique because of the ice cream flavors it has to offer. I just tried the Mango and Guava and both were good tho the Mango is better. The Guava is very subtle in its taste but the Mango has chunks of fruit and has a strong mango flavor to it. I think i'll be back to try other flavors if I'm in Rockville.
google avatar

Mario N.

Yelp
They have an assortment of tropical fruit flavors like mango, soursop, guava and mamey. Oh mamey! I totally love their mamey ice cream! Rich and flavorful with mamey (sapote) characteristically flavor. It took me to my childhood in Cuba and Puerto Rico. I also tried their guava flavor but found it lacking in true guava flavor. Very reasonable prices, tons of exotic fruits made into ice cream! They also make shakes and smoothies. A must try if you like tropical fruits and are adventurous.
google avatar

Starr D.

Yelp
One of our fav local spots. Ice cream is super creamy. Do be aware, double check your orders, they so get it wrong sometimes, especially when you have a big party and all ordered at the same time LOL.

Patricia K.

Yelp
Yeah so I got the passion fruit ice cream and it basically tastes like sugar and heavy cream.. the fake orange color was the only representation of passion fruit cause the passion fruit flavor wasn't present at all.. also got the rum raisin and at least I tasted the rum but again was super sweet and too much heavy cream... if that floats your boat then go for it.. it's just not for me
google avatar

Arista W.

Yelp
We love love love this ice cream!!! But they are always sold out of flavors I want. I'm sure it's homemade which may be the reason for that. My daughter loved their sundae, she ate every drop lol
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
Arriving there was amble parking and outside seating. There was a bit of a wait because it was only one person working at the time and there was a large group ahead of us. Which is fine, just because the ice cream was very good. It was my first time and I definitely will be back. I got 1/2 lychee and 1/2 coconut. The ice cream was smooth and creamy.

Gary R.

Yelp
been there several times. great colors. tasteless ice cream, just sugar and cream. wouldn't go back if it was free.
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
I came here with a friend who frequents Jamaica. We tried rum raisin, grapenut, guava and banana. As far as authenticity with flavors and his home country. The ice cream is on point. I came here with my family a few weeks later. The Lucuma and Mamey flavors were unique and refreshing. On my next visit I'm going to try a guava Shake and maybe grab a prepackaged pint or two. I'm hooked!
google avatar

Andrea N.

Yelp
Delicious flavors with balanced amounts of creaminess and sweetness. Hands down, this is the best ice cream in the DMV.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
The OG Caribbean ice cream place in the DMV. So many tropical flavors, I wish I could try them all. I had lucuma and it was amazing.
google avatar

Lydia T.

Yelp
The best and most special ice-cream in the DMV. They have two locations-one in silver spring and one in Rockville. The flavors of the ice-cream are amazing-they feature some totally original flavors you can't find anywhere else. The texture is gooey and perfect.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
Due to COVID they are using directional traffic where the door closest to Cameron's Seafood is being used as the exit and the other door, the entrance. The ice cream and toppings are everything you would want from an ice cream spot but nothing spectacular like Baked Bear further up Rockville Pike in the Pike & Rose shopping plaza. We tried their castle special and was able to sample 3 different ice creams prior to making our topping selection. We asked for extra hot fudge and a cheery since we were sharing and there was no up-charge for the request, pretty cool. Although I probably won't return here again, they are a must try at least once.
google avatar

Khang L.

Yelp
Awesome place, you cannot get any of these tropical flavors anywhere else! Breadfruit flavor, ...... some of the best flavor! A hidden gem for sure!

Roberta L.

Yelp
Tropical ice-cream Paradise. My first time there I had no idea what some of the flavors were...but they give you tastes to help you decide. Their mango was the best I've ever eaten...so I tried lucama, soursop, coconut, orange pineapple, papaya .and loved them too. For the less adventurous there are yummy traditional flavors. Get in line and prepare to enjoy!

Kat M.

Yelp
Perfect spot for ice-cream, especially in summer. The ice-cream is very creamy with very bright and fresh fruit flavors. The establishment itself is small but the staff move through the lines quickly and their treats are so worth it -- it's popular for a reason! They have a full list of "all time favorites" (vanilla, chocolate, Oreo, etc.) that are also amazing but I would recommend trying the different fruit flavors. I recently got the Island Castle but swapped out mango for sapote flavor. Love that their sundaes have so many fun elements (crunch of the toasted coconut, flavor zing of the fruit syrups) but are also so well balanced and fresh feeling. 10/10 excellent.
