This Korean Restaurant at the Choe House Uses 300-Year-Old Recipes

"Set on the Choe House compound in Gyeongju, this fine-dining hanok presents a curated menu of the Choe family's 12-generation, 300-year-old recipes in a hanjeongsik-style meal where numerous banchan accompany a sizzling pot of soup, vegetables and seafood. Standouts include sainji (a light kimchi seasoned with fresh seafood, shiitake and about 20 ingredients), jipjang (a rich fermented-soybean side with roughly 20 ingredients, including kelp, chive, radish and Korean beef simmered for 10 hours), and bukeo bopuragi (shredded, whipped dried roe). Guests remove their shoes, sit at low wooden tables on an ondol-heated floor, and eat everything placed on the table at once rather than as courses. The dining experience is steeped in the Choe family's long ethic of communal generosity — from opening food stores during famine to feeding anyone within a 40-kilometer radius — and the compound’s history (including family philanthropy after liberation) reinforces the meal as an act of cultural preservation rather than merely a tasting of traditional flavors." - Ximena N. Japanese experience centered around Korean cuisine. We enjoyed the private Japanese style rooms with floor seating and many of the dishes were well presented and flavourful. The outside garden is breathtaking and very picturesque for a summer dinner. We were less happy with our raw fish salad that had many bones and was a bit hard to chew. We would also like to have taken it a bit slower - in our case all of the dishes were on our table within 40 minutes of being seated. Overall a positive experience.

A truly beautiful experience. Everything was amazing... the architecture was local and authentic, the gardens were breath taking with the evening light making the tree scenery seem very exotic. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious! If you're looking for a truly Korean culinary experience-- this is it.

The place is so amazing and the food served reminds you of what the royalties used to feast on. But what really blew my mind away is to sit in the room (traditional rooms) and open the window to a beautiful view of the garden! Love it!

Excellent experience of traditional high-class Korean foods and environment. Formal course of Korean dishes not to disappoint. Do not expect heavy meat or grill foods with strong spicy flavor. Entering this place itself to look around for your meal is worth spending extra money on. The only downside of course meal is that you need to keep up with your serving speed and others. You can choose your private room. Try it, if you can!

We ate at House of Choi for dinner. We ate the 69,000 won meal option as we booked late. We were given a private room and our appetizers immediately came out. The first three dishes were delicious. It was followed by a salad and raw fish with seaweed wrap. The final set of dish was a simple Korean side dishes with rice, along with galbi-gin. The first set of dishes were great for set meal. The last dishes were like from a cheap Korean restaurant. The galbi was overcooked and chewy. The server was rushing to serve our dishes even though we were still working on our last set of meals. They don't monitor us and serve the next set of dish as we finish each set. They claim that they have a big party and needed to serve all the rooms together. That seems like lazy service. The price of the meal was not worth it. I recommend other restaurants more reasonably priced restaurants in the area. Not sure if they're trying to Michelin Star or not but they are a long way from it if they are.

We weren’t able to figure out the reservation system as foreigners with no Korean phone number but the hostess Grace helped us. She also came to explain all the dishes in English to us which made the experience that much better. Had an amazing lunch! Thank you, Grace!

Excellent food and ambiance. Strongly recommended. One of the best royal meal dining experiences we’ve had, but on the expensive side comparatively. The food has much creativity, and it is very well prepared - a fine dining experience. We ordered the additional kimchi and meat side which was well worth it. Friendly staff, but not the strongest English spoken here. We’re glad we didn’t put too much weight on the negative reviews we saw, they clearly had their own issues.
