Rakim Gaines Wants to Be Asheville’s Next Standout Chef at Capella on 9 | Eater Carolinas

"An East Asheville neighborhood hibachi where a young Rakim Gaines spent afternoons as an unpaid intern after the owner invited the nine-year-old watcher to try cooking. There he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with other cooks, learning to grill chicken, steak, shrimp and make fried rice, doling out heaping portions and surprising customers who saw a kid in school clothes working behind the grill — an early, formative hands-on experience that sparked his passion for cooking." - Eric Barton

Fresh and delicious food. Great service. Good prices. My concern is the cleanliness of the restaurant itself. Definitely need to work on wiping down the walls and trash cans covered in fat and leftover foods. The dirtiness kinda makes it cheap looking.

Love the food but honestly not sure I wanna come back after the lady that takes your food order was rude to a lady standing waiting on her food. Then after this lady leaves with her food, she proceeds to yell out I hate when people stand right there. The lady wasn’t doing anything wrong and was not blocking the sauces. She needs to learn manners and kindness it goes a long way.

Honestly I am amazed at how bad this place went down hill. When I was younger my dad would take me here and it was great so I had good memories of it then. Last two times I went were just awful. I'll start off by saying that $30 for one plate of chicken and rice and dumplings is insane. We went to go sit down at tables and EVERY table was nasty, either had sauce or rice stuck to the table. I ended up cleaning our own table while the people at the front just sat there on their phone. There was literally stuff peeling off the walls and it looked like there was grease on some of the walls. I don't know how they stay open with the uncleanliness. Parking lot was completely empty as well as the restaurant except for the kids in there. I thought they were closed because of how barren the place was. On top of that the people working there ended up yelling at the kids a couple times which was awkward. Now the worst part was the food. I was really excited to go get some food from there as I said earlier I had great memories of it from when I was younger. The chicken tasted like it was frozen and unthawed and cooked, extremely dry and had a weird sour taste to it. The rice was semi stale and the carrots were burnt, I ended up throwing half of them away. My stomach actually was hurting after I had eaten there and mind you this was the only thing I've eaten all day. We tried to get soda out of the fountain and two out of the three just did not taste like what it was supposed to be as well as the third being completely flat. We will not be returning here, I am completely disappointed in what this place has turned into.

Stopped in today to try because my favorite spot got washed away during the hurricane in biltmore. Person that took my order was very nice and the older lady and gentleman cooking was nice enough. After I ordered my food I had some time to look around and noticed how unclean this place is. I was starting to second guess my choices at this point but google reviews was telling me the food is so good and worth the money because this place is not cheap. First off my avocado that was in my sushi was so hard I could not chew it. Everything was pretty much flavorless with the 2 sushi rolls I ordered. My 20 dollar steak plate that was supposed to come with fried rice and carrots well the rice was not a fried rice it was over cooked brown colored rice and the carrots were so mussy they just fell apart when tried to poke them with my fork. The steak was okay for the most part. Some pieces were very tuff and unable to chew. Will not go back!!!

This is the nastiest restaurant I have ever been to. The floors the walls everything is covered in sticky grease looking substance. You can barely even see through their windows. On top of all that, they gave me the wrong food and we witnessed the cook tasting our food and putting the spoon directly back into the pan. Disgusting! This place should be shut down.

Google
Food was okay. Not the greatest vibes in the restaurant. Person behind the register had a bad attitude. Not personable at all. Prices have increased and what's online isn't accurate

Google
The Japanese place to go. Thank you! 🙂

Google
I previously had a bad experience here and returned to give them another chance. They accommodated me well and I enjoyed my return visit completely. They have earned back their 5 stars. Give this place another chance if you had any bad experience, things are going great and looking clean / tasting great.

Yelp
Eh, Not too impressed with the taste but it is carry out express. It would be nice to have some shrimp sauce included. Guess you have to ask for that.

Yelp
Very expensive for what you get, mine was $16 + for teriyaki chicken rice a carrots with a drink. Dining area is dark and dingey. Employees argued loudly the whole time I was there.

Yelp
Wouldn't eat there again. I ordered shrimp hibachi. It was cooked on grill. Some little shrimp and a few pieces of overcooked broccoli. Service was appalling. Rude. She cursed at a co worker within my earshot. Walked off the floor but didn't leave instructions. So my order sat with the takeout orders for pickup.

Yelp
My favorite spot in Asheville! The food is always cooked to order and it never disappoints. Would highly recommend to everyone!

Mark S.

Yelp
Idk what that was but it wasn't Japanese food. Wasn't even good cafeteria food, one bite and straight into the trash....

Yelp
I will never eat there again, I am so grossed out. I went in around 7:20 to order my food (they close at 8:30). After I sat down to wait on my to-go order, I watched a petite employee walk towards me with her black broom and long handled dust pan. The lady complained to the male employee that the bathrooms were nasty! The lady did not change her gloves, and I watched as she helped package to-go orders! I repeat, the lady DID NOT CHANGE HER GLOVES! Between getting to-go orders ready, the lady would pick up a dirty yellow sponge and scrub the counter. I wanted to thank god that this lady did not touch my container of food, thankfully the young male cashier bagged my food. Though the lady did not touch my container of food, I could not eat it! If I was confrontational, I would've asked for a refund.

Yelp
Favorite Lunch Spot. They have the best white sauce and teriyaki sauce. Food is cooked right after you ordered. Never been disappointed!

Yelp
Sad food. The fish in the sushi neither looked nor tasted fresh. The miso soup came straight out of a packet. The gyoza were greasy and flavorless, and seemed as though they also likely came from a package. You'd do just as well to grab a couple sushi rolls from the grocery store.

Yelp
The rolls I order were super good. The crab rangoons were an after thought and I probably could have done without them. The staff was super friendly, and the store was in pretty good shape. Definitely will be going back.

Yelp
Change your name from express. Doesn't look clean at all no wok in sight and super slow. Let people know how long it will take. No gloves or mask used by cooks. Cashier serves up rice and plates food no gloves. Bad choice

Violet L.

Yelp
This place is bomb af! I've grown up going to this place. I highly recommend, the workers are awesome and the food!! Ahh the food is to die for. I normally get the chicken teriyaki and the sweet carrots and the special pinkish white sauce makes everything 10 times better too.

Yelp
No clue what was going on here as they are typically fairly run of the mill quality wise but I just recently got take out from this establishment and it was wretched. It also took almost 45 minutes to get our order despite the restaurant being basically empty. I had steak and chicken combination - it was bland and basically inedible. The steak was over cooked and flavorless; chicken was full of gristle, overcooked, and flavorless; vegetables had a just straight up bad taste, I did not eat them. My wife had the chicken dinner - chicken was full of gristle, overcooked, and flavorless; vegetables were overcooked and inedible. Child got chicken with rice kids item - chicken was, well just look above, and the "fried" rice was just white rice burned in oil... I truly don't understand how you screw up fried rice? It had no vegetables, no seasoning, and was literally just cooked on the stove top with oil, I watched the cook make it and that's all that was in it! In the past I've had mediocre experiences with Yoshida; never great but never bad, just simply a relatively quick, if expensive, Japanese place. After this experience I will not be returning, ever.

Yelp
Dirty. Good food, but a filthy place. I'd love to go there if they could keep the place clean. Don't know how they get by the health department. Don't take the risk.

Yelp
This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Asheville. Family owned and staff is always great. On top of that the food is not only delicious but affordable. Love going here!

Yelp
I could eat here every night for the rest of my life and die happy. I love it. The sweetest workers and best quality food!!! I love you all!!

Justin S.

Yelp
Best lunch ive had anywhere pretty much! Ive been here three dofferent times. Everything is fresh cooked to order and delicious everytime! Its a bit expensive but for what you get its worth it! Ive been a chef for 30 years. Its nothing glamerous but just down right good fresh consistant and delicious food!

Yelp
Terrible experience... I walked in to place a to-go order. First of all, this place smells like a musty old house, and I've never seen so many flies in January... the prices seemed a bit high, but I just figured they would be generous with their portions (wrong). After waiting 30 minutes (express???) my order finally came out. The food wasn't the worst I have even eaten, but definitely not worth what I paid. Teriyaki chicken consists of some chicken, a scoop of rice and some carrots. No other veggies and no white sauce... do yourself a favor and stay home, make some instant rice and throw some chicken in a pan with teriyaki sauce. It'll be a lot cheaper and you won't feel dirty afterwards.

Yelp
I liked it. Good service, good food, and in walking distance of the car dealership service shop. Inside it's dated but that doesn't matter to me. I just needed a quick yet satisfying lunch and a place to keep warm while I wait on my car.

Yelp
this place sucks when trying to place an order, they dont deliver yet use grub hub. tried 8 freeking times to order. will never even try sagain, you lost me forever

Yelp
I love quick sushi and other oriental food, especially if I'm in a hurry. However, this is definitely an example of bad fast food. The service was awesome but I was quite worried I might get sick after my visit there. My sushi was a bit warmer than I'm used to which made me rethink on the quality and freshness of the meal. I chose to take the chicken and shrimp combo meal back to my friend at work. I hurriedly finished my meal because I really wanted to leave the dirty restaurant. I asked my friend about the quality of his meal and he said "It's alright, but can you give me more shrimp sauce?". I took that as a sign that the food wasn't seasoned very well, if at all. I guess this place is alright if you're in a hurry and don't really mind what you put in your stomach.

Yelp
Not that great of food. No flavor at all. I have always ate at Kobe Express and will be going there from now on.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
Food was fare in taste but a bit pricy for the amount you receive. My order was take-out but during the time I spent there waiting it looked clean. I however did notice the current sanitation grade was only 91 and that concerned me.

Yelp
I just had lunch at Yoshida Express. I was pleased to see their health score was 95%. I ordered the lunch steak & chicken combo, no broccoli, to go. What I got was steak & shrimp broccoli? carrots & rice were on the side Nevertheless, quality & flavor was pretty typical hibachi steak & shrimp, so not bad. The steak though good quality, was all by itself, which I thought it a little bland. Onions, etc might help? The shrimp was mixed with the broccoli that wasn't supposed to be in there? Entree only including tax was $10.91

Yelp
One of the few family owned and operated Japanese restaurants Always clean and friendly the food and pricing is great try their lunch bowls for a complete meal deal with free drink. Sushi is above par

Dev G.

Yelp
They always have my order correct and is ready by the time I am there to pick it up. My coworkers and I love this place and order from it all of the time. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
My teenage son who loves Japanese food asked me if we could find somewhere in Asheville to grab Japanese so we stopped in at Yoshida Ex. We usually eat at Kobe in Waynesville which I highly recommend. I ordered what I usually order from Kobe here at Yoshida only to be made to feel like a fool by the guy at the register smugly taking our order. Literally made fun of me for thinking that I would get mushrooms with my hibachi steak and I told him I had gotten mixed up with how Kobe makes hibachi and then he laughed and made fun of me for how I pronounced Kobe saying it's pronounced Ko-Bay and that it's not Japanese but Chinese food (he was wrong) this is my experience of this restaurant up to this point and I haven't even seen my food yet and quite honestly don't even want to. We ended up not walking out the door after being disrespected by this guy for no reason at all and we ate our meal. Roughly $12 per person. The next weekend we went to Ganko on Bleachery Blvd right down the road. We were welcomed with a very warm greeting by no less than 3 members of staff upon walking in. Super friendly table service at Ganko which Yoshida doesn't offer, Yoshida sits your plate on the counter which is fine in itself if the service is friendly. I'm not an egotistical person and being treated like a king isn't what I expect but being laughed at in front of my children while we're trying to decide what to order is almost cause to get a flat nose, I will not be back to Yoshida ever. There's too many other better options within a short drive.

Allen J.

Yelp
Visited Yoshida for the first time and immediately noticed that the restaurant did not look 'restaurant quality' clean. The sanitation score was posted as 94 at my time of visit. The staff were polite, helpful and courteous and the food for my take out order was delivered after a reasonably short wait. I ordered a teriyaki steak and a teriyaki chicken, for a total of over $17.00, the most I ever paid for 2 plates of Japanese carry-out. I wish I could say more than that the food was passable and filling, but I can't. Both dishes were forgettably pedestrian in taste, and for the expense, not enough to bring me back as a repeat customer, which, I would have loved to have been considering this restaurant is so conveniently located for my schedule.
