Yoshino Sushi Honten - Review - Nihonbashi - Tokyo - The Infatuation

"The sushi chefs at Yoshino Sushi Honten are masters of toro, the fatty tuna belly that melts like butter. So much so that they supposedly invented the very word in 1918, after a customer who loved the texture of the high-quality fish. This fifth-generation-owned spot has been serving nigiri zushi since 1879, making it one of the oldest sushi restaurants in Tokyo. They keep their sushi classic—the rice is only seasoned with red vinegar and salt, the traditional Edomae way. It can get very busy, so go right before they open for lunch to get a good spot in line (yes, there will be one). Once you’re in, grab a seat at the wooden counter and watch the chefs meticulously form pieces of sushi by hand in between fanning fresh water eel, seared to order. Or, kick back at a table tucked next to a shoji screen and wait for a tray of glistening fish to arrive. photo credit: Julio Koshiishi" - Kiera Wright-Ruiz

Exorbitant prices that are cryptically hidden on their website. No menus given when you go in. 50000 yen plus tax for 10 pieces of sushi, some of which were fishy. This is without doubt the worst meal I’ve had in any country.

My mum has visited here before and was so excited to go again - and it did not disappoint. We went there on a Wednesday at 1pm and we did not have to wait in line. The sushi was really delicious especially the fatty tuna with chives! Everyone was really lovely to us. For a nice sushi lunch, definitely recommend. You can just open the doors and go in if it’s not too busy, it’s also cash only!

Since the nearby Manten Sushi was fully booked, I walked by this shop and saw a few people lined up here. Walked in an order the 2300jpy set for lunch. 8pcs nigiri and 3 mini rolls. The taste was good especially the chūtoro (medium fatty tuna). The tamago (egg) is special as this is the first time I see it presented it in such a way. The fish roe is good too. 4 star max.

I have decades of experience eating sushi in Tokyo . The sushi is good high quality and freshness and fine taste. Prices are good for the quality. The reviews are over hyped for sure. Everything is in Japanese only. So basically not foreign friendly. The staff has some attitude about waiting outside until invited inside. With a reservation everything is more pleasant. There’s only set menus but can order al la carte too but staff never explains this option. Because they push the set menus to make everything easier. The sushi chef’s are average at best. If you’re visiting the area then okay to drop by if you don’t mind waiting in line. So, reservations are highly recommended. Overall good.

Yoshino Sushi Honten is one of the older restaurants in Tokyo, having opened in 1879. Make sure to get here early. I was the first person in line by arriving 15 minutes before opening. However, just half an hour later, the restaurant was packed and had a line snaking around the corner. The menu is in Japanese and the staff do not know much English. What you need to know is that the sushi comes in sets here. You’ll want to get either the largest or second largest set. I went with the largest set if 11 pieces (2 pieces not shown in my photo due to lack of space on the plate - they came separately later) for 3,630 yen ($25.50 USD at time of writing). The sushi was good. I’ve had both better and worse in Japan. Overall, I enjoyed it and felt that the price was good. I wouldn’t go too far out of your way to eat here, but it is still a good place to have lunch if you are nearby.

English is hardly spoken here. A Japanese speaking friend ordered a table and a menu there. Despite the language barriers, the service was very attentive and tried to explain to us via pictures (searched on Google) what we ate. The food was very good, really pur and fresh.

Lovely authentic sushi bar. Lovely range of sushi with bottomless think it was matcha tea Watching the chefs each doing their part for your meal is fascinating.
