"Craving a breakfast sandwich that tastes like it came from a New York City bodega? Head over to Normal Heights newcomer Young Cluck, where in addition to morning starters like egg-topped grits and fried chicken and waffles, its menu features a straightforward “baconeggandcheese” consisting of Kaiser roll, scrambled egg, crispy bacon, and American cheese." - Candice Woo

"An all-day restaurant that’s debuting Monday, June 12 on Adams Avenue is putting its own twist on downhome comfort food like chicken and waffles, cheesy grits, and fried chicken. With aims to open more locations throughout San Diego, Young Cluck is launching in Normal Heights where its owners, Pete and Sarah Servold, have lived for almost a decade." - Candice Woo

I came across this place serendipitously on a day that I desired fried chicken. It did not disappoint. I've had their breakfast and lunch/dinner offerings. Everything tasted fresh and the menu and restaurant indicated a general care by the staff. There are really good vegetarian options. The breakfast sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. I think that's my favorite item so far, but I plan to try it all. Very nice service and space. Can't wait to frequent regularly! Google
What a great spot! The Spicy Sammy was just the right amount of spice, crispy chicken with an interesting and refreshing kimchi slaw. Also, the bahn mi and chicken with waffles were super tasty. Nothing was dry or over cooked. Well prepared and not too heavy. The staff were friendly and knew what they were doing. Overall a cute spot with interesting food that we’ll definitely be coming back for.

Google
Been twice since the opening and everything is amazing! Bacon egg cheese sandwich is so simple and delicious, best I’ve had in a long time. Chicken fried rice bowl was awesome, and came back today for the chicken and waffles which are insanely good. My new favorite! Awesome people and food here.

Google
My husband and I are so happy to be walking distance from this place. We ordered the chicken and waffles and banh mi--both very tasty! Looking forward to coming back and trying their chicken sandwich, "Hate Free and Served on Sundays." Fingers crossed the Chef is working on a waffle fry to go with it! Also loved the decor! The place is bright, airy, colorful--def has personality, and we loved that! Customer service was also wonderful. We felt welcome as soon as we walked in, and all our questions were readily answered!

Google
This place is great, anyone who rates it less than 5 is defiantly a major critique. It’s always sanitary, has a nice view, electric fly swatters at the outdoor eating tables, and great eats. The cook really cares about each piece of food ordered and the cashier/ server Sam is very welcoming and friendly! I’d rate this a 5/5 restaurant.

Google
I have tried multiple different things on this menu. Of course I prefer some things to others, but I haven’t had anything that I didn’t like so far! The chicken is so crispy on the outside and so perfectly moist and delicious on the inside. I truly have no idea how that’s done. But it’s to die for. What I love about eating here is that the menu is small, so I never over eat. I order one thing and a drink and it’s a good amount. There’s so many times I go to restaurants and their portion sizes are massive and I either over eat, or I take it home and it gets thrown out. This place is good cuz it’s enough to get you going again. I don’t feel bloated after and sluggish. The Rolex is so good! It’s my new favorite. It’s got this delicious dill flavor and spinach with eggs. It’s like a healthy omelette wrapped in warm naan. NEED I SAY MORE!? Everyone there is so nice and accommodating. They all seem like they’re having a good time and are cheerful and it makes me want to be there. It’s a refreshing environment and I nice new place in the neighborhood that I love to hangout in! Happy to have a new restaurant. And I love that it’s owned by the cutest, sweetest little family 🤗☺️ I should’ve taken more pics but these are a couple of things I’ve had so far! I’m usually eating it before I remember to take pics haha

Google
It was decent. Ordered the Sandwich and also the Chicken and Waffles. Sandwich wasn't very filling. Chicken and Waffles were good , would recommend ordering those if you stop by.

Google
My husband and I visited Young Cluck while visiting San Diego and loved it! I got the breakfast burrito with bacon per the owner's rec (I'm not a big meat eater) and it was so delicious. I love the pickled veggies in it. My husband is somewhat picky when it comes to fried chicken- he hates paying for mediocre fried chicken. He loved this fried chicken "perfectly crisped on the outside and juicy on the inside." He got the chicken and waffles. We'd definitely go again if we visit San Diego! Pete, the owner and chef, was a fabulous host and wonderful to talk to. You don't get this kind of service at that price point very often- highly recommend it.

Yelp
Out and about and hungry. Haha. Tried a new spot in Normal Heights, Young Cluck. We shared the "Our Chicken & Waffles". Malt powder and pretzels mixed into this fluffy waffle, served under maple brined fried chicken. Served with caramel and maple sauce. $12 It was very hot, freshly made and a great treat.

Yelp
We got sandwiches to-go and went and ate with friends at Little Miss Brewing down the street. Service was great. Prepared right after our order and done quickly. We enjoyed sitting outside while we waited. Sandwiches were sooo good. I had the basic chicken sandwich which was the perfect balance of everything: textures, spices, fat, protein, salt and sweet. I tried the spicy chicken which was excellent but a bit too spicy for me. Only thing that would have made this perfect for me would have been a side of coleslaw or fries / onion rings. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
The former Bowl Bar suite in the Adams Plaza of Normal Heights is now a new chicken shop called Young Cluck which debuted this week. The seating was limited to three two-top tables both inside and outside along with four stools at a countertop. The on-site parking was terrible with maybe ten spaces split between the five plaza businesses. Instead of the traditional choices of tenders and sandwiches, the kitchen produced a fusion of different cuisines. For example, there was the Southern classic of chicken & waffles, yet also a chicken banh mi sandwich. The current menu had four breakfast selections served between 7 am and 2 pm along with four lunch/dinner items available from 11 am to close. Dark Horse coffee, chips, and drinks rounded out the board. Eventually, a weekly special will also be offered. I picked the Popcorn Fried Chicken Bowl which contained pieces of battered and fried chicken served over sesame garlic fried rice. Yuzu shoyu sauce, pickled radish, and chiffonade shizo were the other toppings. You certainly won't find such a combination of ingredients in a chicken bowl from a non-Asian eatery. The pickled radish did wonders to provide acidity to cut through the batter on the chicken. The serving size could have been a little more to make the $14 price tag a better value. It will be interesting to see how the menu changes over time as these initial offerings were quite an eclectic bunch.

Yelp
Super excited to have a new casual food place so close to my home. I decided to order 3 breakfast items to try a variety for take out. Person I spoke with was pleasant on the phone and super nice in person. When I walked there the inside was bright and open space so even with the tables inside a small space it didn't seem cramped. I ordered the chicken and waffles, breakfast sandwich and the southern grits. Loved the chicken and waffles; chicken tenders had a nice crunch and the waffle was fluffy. The breakfast sandwich was delicious for $7 dollars. The grits weren't my cup of tea I really like the cheese incorporated into the grits and the cheese was on top. To be fair I am obsessed with another restaurant's version so i always compare to the ones I love. Also got a cold brew and it was nice and strong. Definitely coming back to try the chicken sandwiches for dinner since the chicken breading was delicious.

Diane K.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly. A quaint place with a not overwhelming menu. We stopped in for a quick breakfast date. We ordered the grits bowl and chicken and pretzel waffle. The grits could have been a little more seasoned for us. I loved the batter/crust of the chicken strips. The pretzel waffles were perfect.

Danielle B.

Yelp
Far exceeded my expectations! All I can say is that I wish I had eaten here sooner. Fairly new to San Diego, this spot is a fried chicken gem. Definitely some of the best chicken and waffles I have ever had. I loved their spicy chicken sandwich and their bahn mi was so good. Loved everything! This is about to be my new go-to spot.

Danny W.

Yelp
Young Cluck's southern fried chicken sandwich is a winner. Crispy, juicy chicken pairs harmoniously with it's herb mayo and pickles, all nestled in a soft brioche bun. A flavor explosion that's authentically Southern.

Nick C.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place! I was so stoked to hear this place was opening up down the street . I gave the bahn mi a shot cause it's so damn hot out and it was somewhat of a let down. The bread wasn't fresh, it was a bit stale. Fresh bread is a huge part of what makes a good bahn mi or any sandwich. Pros: their chicken was tender and their pickling flavor was on point. The ratio of pickled veggies and herbs was off for me. Wish there was more. The owner and workers were very nice and welcoming though. I still want to try other things on the menu, so I'll be back. I've been eyeing their fried chicken sandwiches for a while now.

Victoria R.

Yelp
Finally a little piece of home in SD. The bacon egg and cheese at this place is legit minus that it's not on an everything bagel with salt pepper and ketchup. None the less I will absolutely take it. One of the biggest challenges I've had since leaving in NY is finding a damn good breakfast sandwich. FINALLY I have found one. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't eat the BEC sandwich here. Also tried the spicy chicken sandwich and banh mi- weren't for me. There are still many more things to try on the menu. Still a five star rating because i am ECSTATIC about the BEC. Run don't walk here.

Shannon H.

Yelp
Stopped in on opening day to get a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, and was thrilled! Our sweet lil neighborhood doesn't have many early-opening, grab and go breakfast options, so I've spent years getting up with my very-early-riser daughter, walking to the park or playground, and grabbing Starbucks on the way, because it was all that open. Now we can change the game, and keep it local! The Young Cluck's breakfast sandos were so good, and they serve Dark Horse coffee (iced or hot), so basically the perfect start to the day. Can't wait to come back and try basically everything else on the menu!!

Kim C.

Yelp
My husband and I are so happy to be walking distance from this place. We ordered the chicken and waffles and banh mi--both very tasty! Looking forward to coming back and trying their chicken sandwich, "Hate Free and Served on Sundays." Fingers crossed the Chef is working on a waffle fry to go with it! Also loved the decor! The place is bright, airy, colorful--def has personality, and we loved that! Customer service was also wonderful. We felt welcome as soon as we walked in, and all our questions were readily answered!

Yelp
This is my second time eating here. I tried the Spicy Fried Chicken Sammy and I must say it's a delightful experience. The spice level was on point, and the pickled julienned carrots provided a fantastic contrast. tThey've definitely nailed it with this one. Bravo to Young Cluck! I forgot to take a picture. So here my dog waiting for a bit of their delicious chicken tendersA

Krystal L.

Yelp
Overall great service and good tasting food. We had the fried chicken sandwich (7.5/10) and ban-mi (8/10 -- unique take on a traditional ban mi Vietnamese sandwich). The spicy chicken was flavorful but would have liked more spice! I want to try the chicken and waffles next!! Will def be back.

Zildheam D.

Yelp
I am addicted to the chicken and waffles. The ladies who work here are so cool and attentive, I'm always here on weekends for the chicken and waffles. I recommend caramel sauce on the side, in my opinion it's a lil over kill, try the maple syrup only and you will see what i mean. Just a personal preference. They open early too and it's so convenient.

Kari K.

Yelp
It is a pretty good hole in the wall place. Good sandwiches. Friendly staff. Quick service.

Ashley S.

Yelp
The food Is decent here. The breakfast sandwich was good, it was simple filling and the perfect size. I'm not sure if the chicken was breaded properly, but each bite was 50% bread until I got to the middle of the sandwich. The parts that were sticking out were straight batter and was not connected at all to the chicken. I can appreciate this is a family business that just got started, but I'm hoping they can be receptive to feedback. Just looking at the comments below by the owner that doesn't seem to be the case. There were some kinks in service and no napkins were handed to us with our order.

Kyle M.

Yelp
Was in the area and lucky to find this gem here on Yelp during breakfast time today. I was between the baconeggandcheese (yes, it's one word) and the chicken and waffles. I went with the non everyday choice and it was an instant classic. Grabbed it to go and ate it at home ;$). Will def be back. A+

Katie R.

Yelp
I have been waiting for this place to open for weeks now! It definitely did not disappoint. I have tried multiple things on the menu now, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Not to mention, it's so hard to find good places that carry non alcoholic beers, and this restaurant has like 7 different kinds! Non alcoholic beers, hop waters, regular water, juices, dark horse coffee...WHAT Ok, the freaking chicken and waffle is so good! It's nice to have a completely different spin on the classic chicken and waffle. This one incorporates pretzels...ridiculously good. The hate free and bahn mi are absolutely to die for as well. I can't wait to go back! I love the small menu because there's nothing more annoying than a menu with 100 options. Keep it simple and limit my options and I'll be able to make a decision. Or I'll just order 2 things The staff is super friendly and outgoing. The vibe is on point and the t-shirts are hilarious! I can't wait to see what else this place comes up with!!

Brian C.

Yelp
Go for the Spicy Sammy! I'll be coming back for the chicken + waffles, and some DH cafe!

Marcia K.

Yelp
Tried this new restaurant today. My spicy chicken sandwich was delicious and flavorful and good spice to it. My husband had Bahn Mi and liked it. The restaurant is darling and the staff is friendly and helpful. Cute ambience. We did take-out and waited about 10 minutes for our food. A new neighborhood jewel.

CJ F.

Yelp
Great Scott, they've done it! The baconeggandcheese (one word) is exactly what I remember from growing up on the east coast. No frills. Bacon crispy AF. And the Kaiser roll that you just can't find out here. This will become a weekly staple. The chicken sangys are cooked to perfection. Who knew fried chicken could be juicy on the inside? I liked the "hate free and served on Sundays" over the spicy, but try both! The owners are the two nicest, coolest folks you could ever meet. And they live right here in Normal Heights! Honestly, supporting them and the community is reason enough to go. The incredible food will keep you coming back.

Cass S.

Yelp
How do they get the chicken so crispy?? What kind of age old recipes are they working with to make their fried chicken so damn good! We ordered the Banh Mi, the Hate free and the chicken and waffles. All were good but their chicken and waffles was simply amazing. Extra crispy on the outside and soooo tender on the inside. Service was good, people were friendly. This is my new go to place when I am craving chicken! Great addition to the 'hood!

Alyssa F.

Yelp
Perfect spot for a quick, well-made bite. My favorite is the simple bacon egg and cheese on a weekend morning--with a cold brew coffee, of course. But I just tried the grits and am huge fan. Everyone who works there is super friendly. Great vibes. A fantastic new gem in Normal Heights.

Kole M.

Yelp
The baconeggandcheese was almost passable, tasted good, but a few things I would change about preparation to warrant the comparison to a proper bodega sandwich: 1) mayo. Can't overstate how much it was missed. The whole thing was a bit dry. 2) toast the outside of the roll, preferably before the inside. Would go a long way to preventing the soft interior of the (very nice) rolls soaking up the excess grease and becoming dense/mushy instead of getting a nice bit of crisp

Gina S.

Yelp
This breakfast sandwich (baconeggandcheese) was amazing! So simple yet so flavorful. Saw someone post a review comparing it to fast food and I could not disagree more! Will definitely be coming back and definitely recommend this place!

Michael S.

Yelp
Food-4.4/5 Obviously way better than anything I could make. Chicken was right out the fryer, 3 tenders that were good, batter to chicken ratio unexpected, lots of batter. Batter was very unseasoned, very little salt, pepper, and no hint of secret or special ingredients. Waffle was amazing. Service-5/5 Fast, friendly, very good Ambiance-4/5 Cool, funny theme, not much inside, probably aimed at take out.

Annie B.

Yelp
1st time stopping in and we were very impressed with the food, cute ambience and very friendly service! Husband ordered the southern fried chicken sandwich- lots of flavor with pickles and sauce. He said it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. I ordered the popcorn chicken bowl. It was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly paired with rice and pickled radish. My husband finished mine up and commented on the different seasonings/breading on his vs mine. Both delicious! Wish we would have seen they served their fried chicken & pretzel waffle all day! Next time! We'll definitely be back! Highly recommend!

Mikayla H.

Yelp
New businesses spring up around this neighborhood all the time, but Young Cluck is the first one I am truly excited about! This week, I tried the chicken & waffles -- absolutely wonderful I don't really like fried chicken because I get weirded out by the tendons/etc, so I was pleased to find none of that in the fried chicken atop my waffle. The breading is so good and complements the pretzel-waffles well! The only thing possibly missing is a bit of spice. They're open from 7am-10pm but close between 2-4 for shift change. The menu is quite small and breakfast items are only available until 2pm. I have a feeling/hope this might change since I could happily eat chicken and waffles any time of the day. Friendly staff! Great service. Reasonable prices, especially compared to the $18 breakfasts down the street. Wish there was more room in the restaurant, but that's not really their fault and I'm glad they're in that spot because it's close enough for me (I've one recent knee replacement and the other on deck) to walk. With that said, parking also sucks. Lastly, some music playing in the background would be nice to drown out the sounds of Adams Ave while you're waiting for your food/eating. Coffee is from dark horse so obviously delicious, but I'm hoping they'll soon incorporate a cold brew instead of just coffee on ice. Edit: I was wrong, they do have cold brew :) Looking forward to becoming a regular here!

Thomas C.

Yelp
The staff are incredibly welcoming and wholesome! Food is incredibly tasty and would recommend the chicken and waffles to everyone.. definitely going back!! LOVE IT

Spudds K.

Yelp
Damn! I could eat the fried chicken from this place all day long! The regular (Hate Free) chicken sandwich is delicious! The chicken is always cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside - inside a soft and yummy bun. I love this place! The guys who run it are really kind and friendly too. I sincerely hope it does well.

Chris C.

Yelp
this local, new restaurant is 5 star, IMO. the food is creative, fresh, and the flavors are outstanding. In addition to their regular menu ( of which I have sampled every item and give 5 stars), they introduce weekly "specials." Omg. the Cluck Norris special this week is SO good!!!I hope it makes it on the regular meny.

Sam S.

Yelp
I've been making my way through the menu and haven't been disappointed by anything! But today I finally tried the Baconeggandcheese sandwich and it absolutely lived up to the hype! I will be coming back in the mornings even more often now.

Ryan Y.

Yelp
Been dreamin bout the Baconeggandcheese and just got one again. So good! Straight out a NY bodega. Heading back for the chicken sando soon. Mouth is watering just thinking about it. Crispy & delicious!

Kris F.

Yelp
I had the Banh MI inspired sandwich and it was great! Delicious bread, perfect spice, great chicken! I'm in Chula Vista but I'll make the drive to go hear again!

Shannon A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot! Delicious food that my whole family enjoys. The Baconeggandcheese are our go-to's, but the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Bahn Mi are also fantastic. And always a good sign when a local spot serves Dark Horse coffee. Check it out!

Josh F.

Yelp
I live around the corner from Young Cluck so decided to give it a shot this week. I had the southern chicken sandwich and it was delicious! Stoked for a new restaurant in town. Will definitely become a regular spot. I happened to be there at the same time as the owners... turns out they live in Normal Heights and are super cool. Support local business!

Jacqueline E.

Yelp
Got the special -pork, sweet potatoes, and collard greens and we are totally blown away! So much flavor and everything perfectly cooked and super tasty!

Don E.

Yelp
The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. The dishes are flavorful, well-seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating in a casual setting. I highly recommend it!

Brianne B.

Yelp
Had the bacon egg and cheese and wow, so simple yet so delicious. I also tried the bahn mi and that was delicious as-well, can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!! So happy so see a chicken place in normal heights!

Richie G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot for breakfast or lunch. Awesome sandwiches - spicy chicken is my favorite but the chicken and waffles are INSANE. You can't go wrong with any choices here, and they are reasonably priced! They get their coffee from Dark Horse and keep it simple & cheap. The non-alcoholic beverage options are refreshing. Cool owners and even cooler workers. Go check it out!

Cristina R.

Yelp
Some of the tastiest sandos you'll find in Mid-City! Huge fan of the Banh Mi and Hate Free. Can't wait to try the rest!

Kyla O.

Yelp
Had the most amazing sandwich - the hate-free chicken sandwich! I think I'm addicted. If you want some of the best fried chicken in San Diego, I highly recommend! Also, the service was amazing. Glad to have this new restaurant in the hood.

Bill S.

Yelp
Place was great my daughters loved the bacon egg and cheese sandwiches and they put out coloring pages for them while we waited! Definitely will be back

Trevor A.

Yelp
So far I've only tried the fried chicken sandwich and I will def be coming back to try the rest of the menu. I do wish they had fries though!

Raquel M.

Yelp
This place is a hidden GEM!! The Chicken Sando was just phenomenal!! Those pickles tho!! & the Banh Mi is so yummy!! The ambiance is super retro and fun!! Go check them out to see fo yo self!

Brian V.

Yelp
Wow. Just WOW. I never knew the neighborhood was missing something...then it got it. That's Young Cluck. I never knew how much I wanted a fried chicken spot on the block until one opened up. I walk by in the morning and I hear whispers from the bacon egg & cheese calling to me....eat me.....eaaaatttt me. For cheaper than a breakfast burrito and just as filling too, you can't go wrong with this one. Did I dare go back and try food off the lunch/dinner menu? You bet I did. I ate the HATE FREE & OPEN ON SUNDAYS as well as the Bahn Mi. Both were delicious. The Bahn Mi touched on all flavor profiles. There was no shortage of salt, fat, acid, and heat. HF&OOS was delicious too, I do wish there was more depth flavor in the breading, the stand out in the sandwich should be the chicken, not the sauce and pickles. Will that stop me for ordering and eating another one? NO! Thank you for opening up!

RJ D.

Yelp
Honestly, it's just overhyped. If someone brought me this chicken sandwich, I wouldn't not eat it. However, if someone asked me where I would like to get a chicken sandwich from it, it wouldn't be here. The only thing I find to be true from these other reviews is how crunchy it is. Also, this place has very few options. Unfortunately, this does nothing to help it. It is not a in-N-out where you are good with the simple menu. It feels lacking and leaving you feeling stuck.

lee s.

Yelp
Had the chicken and waffle, and it was epic! The taste combo was amazing, not sure how they did it. Great service, friendly staff. Great addition to Adams Ave. I'll be back.

Emiliano T.

Yelp
Had the Breakfast Sandwich today, it was amazing. Can't wait to go back and try the chicken and waffles. The place was really nice and they are really friendly

Sarah K.

Yelp
Tried the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich and it was tasty. Crispy bacon and good bread. Service was super quick and the food came out hot. The interior remodel looks nice and bright. We'll be back to try more of the menu.
