I decided to go to Yu Noodles Cafe for the traditional Christmas dinner. Well, actually, I decided to go to two other places... one was closed despite advertising Christmas hours and one told us they had a 30-45 minute wait, at which point I stumbled into Yu Noodle House, very hungry, and ready to just scream "FEED ME, SEYMORE."
The cafe itself is small -- I think there's like 8 tables, total. However, it was completely not crowded, despite it being Christmas. One small family had the corner table when we came in, and shortly after they left, another family came in -- and that was it. It's a shame, because the food was delicious. Their menu is a double sided single sheet, which is a little more limited than what I'm used to at a Chinese restaurant, and maybe that's why they're not as busy? But, what limited items they had, were good.
I ordered an appetizer of scallion pancakes, some pork buns, and their special lamb soup. The scallion pancakes were delicious, perfectly cooked, and ... scalliony? Whatever. They were good. The pork buns were somewhat disappointing in that they didn't come out until I'd almost finished everything else -- at which point they went into the doggy bag. I wish they'd been a little faster, or I guess the main course had been slower, but... oh well.
The lamb soup, which was a special, and not a regular menu item, was amazing. I know when I've made lamb stew, it's hard not to wind up with a layer of grease on top. It's the nature of lamb. This had almost no grease on the surface. The flavour of the lamb permeated the broth, and it was incredibly intense lamb flavour. The noodles were a little soft and bland, but I don't know that they'd ever be able to pick up lamb flavour. Vegetables were perfect and a good compliment. There was like one tiny piece of grizzle. I'm actually getting hungry typing this review, and considering running out to get more lamb soup.
Service was great, and the tea was very good, too.
