Chaya Japanese Cuisine Review - Squirrel Hill - Pittsburgh - The Infatuation

"If you’re going to eat sushi while you’re in Pittsburgh, you should be eating it at Chaya. This place serves beautifully assembled nigiri and rolls in a small space that feels a little bit like a bunker, but one we’d be fine getting stuck in for a few days. You’ll find other classics on the menu like udon and tempura, as well as harder-to-find specialties like tako-su (marinated octopus) and hotaruika (raw baby squid). And, if you want a casual way to try a wide range of dishes, you can also call at least two days ahead for a kaiseki reservation." - Madeline Quigley

This place feels really authentic. The food is very adorable and delicious. Huge sushi rolls for 6 bucks; and they're as fresh as can be. The staff, despite the language barrier, were very friendly. They even brought us free watermelon after we were finished eating. Great place! Please stop and try it out!

Google
Hidden gem. Huge rolls and large fish portions for $6 average a roll, and the taste is great too. Best bang for buck and best overall sushi place I’ve had in Pittsburgh!

Google
Best bowl of ramen I've had since moving to Pittsburgh. Went there with a party of five, and there was a bit of a wait after ordering (maybe 20 minutes?). The wait makes sense once you get the food though. Everything we ordered tasted fresh and so, so good. Highly recommend I would just advise patience for the delicious food they make!

Google
Super underrated, definitely my new favorite sushi spot! Friendly service, high quality fish, and generous portions for the price. Will definitely be coming back.

Google
The service here was awesome! Me and my sister got greeted right away and the man working was very nice and he asked us about our day. We both got a sushi roll and they were both very tasty and fresh. The prices are very affordable. We were a fan of the decor as well. I would definitely eat there again!!

We got back from Japan a week ago and were missing the amazing food. Thankfully, my husband found Yukiyama. Wow! It was super authentic and we loved it. We ordered way too much food not thinking the portions would be Americanized. No matter. I’m happy to have leftovers for lunch this week. We loved the gyoza (dumplings). They were so soft, delicate and flavorful. They didn’t need the sauce but the sauce was terrific. The pictures of their sushi looked good so I wanted to try it. The tuna roll was delicious and only $6. My husband loved his chashu (pork that tastes just like bacon) ramen. There were tons of noodles, huge pieces of pork and mushrooms. He really enjoyed it and was in the mood for ramen since we loved it so much in Japan. I got the chicken katsu (basically a cut up fried chicken cutlet or breast). It was so krispy, tender and flavorful. The portion was giant. It came with white rice, miso soup and the sweet and delicious katsu sauce that I love. We wi definitely be back to try other things when we come back out to Squirrel Hill. The man who brought out the food was so sweet. We miss Japan and found an amazing new spot.

Google
Sushi is my hands down favorite and I’ve made it my mission to try every sushi joint in Pittsburgh. 38 restaurants in, Yukiyama ranks first in terms of best value for your buck. If you’re a fan of salmon avocado or tuna rolls, nothing beats theirs. It’s 6 pieces instead of the usual 8, but Yukiyama makes those pieces MASSIVE and absolutely STUFFED with fish. The salmon and salmon avocado rolls are half the price of most other locations AND taste better. The rice in their rolls is well-proportioned and consistently prepared properly (not too sour, sweet, hard, or mushy). Plus, they’re one of two locations in Pittsburgh to offer fresh wasabi, which has a much stronger and defined kick. Service is usually very fast especially for online orders. They take Apple Pay and Venmo in addition to your usual cards + cash. There’s a reason I’ve been here more than ten times this year!

Google
I ordered DoorDash from Yukiyama not long before they closed for the night. There was an issue with my dasher and my dasher ended up going home instead of picking up my order. The restaurant allowed my second dasher to come pick my food up 45 minutes after they closed. Super awesome service and I am very grateful!

Yelp
Yukiyama Japanese Restaurant, nestled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Squirrel Hill area, at 2121 Murray Ave, north of I-376 west of Frick Park. the restaurant offers an casual atmosphere where you can indulge in a variety of good and fresh Japanese dishes. But before reviewing it's important to untangle the mystery of this locally owned and operated spot. I used a GPS and passed by it twice before going inside. It's because the large awning outside says "Top Chef Sushi" with a 203 phone number, but this is actually Yukiyama Japanese Restaurant and phone # is (412) 422-3120. I wasn't sure this was the right place but when we got the menus it was confirmed. I asked about the signage and history but there was a language issue as everyone I spoke with was Japanese and we couldn't resolve the issue as my Japanese is limited to hello, goodbye, thank you and a couple names of dishes. :-)  Now let's talk about the experience at Yukiyama and out last night's dinner on our visit to the Burgh. It's street parking, like almost every business is in Squirrel Hill, the atmosphere is very casual, the interior is dated but we quickly determined that their commitment to authenticity was evident in their traditional cooking techniques and presentation were outstanding. The menu features a range of options, including Ramen, Sushi, Hibachi,  Tempura, and much more. One of the most popular dishes at Yukiyama is the sashimi platter, which features an assortment of fish that sushi lovers will appreciate the assorted carefully crafted rolls and nigiri. There is no alcohol here but they have a nice assortment of teas and beverages.  We started with an order of Gyoza, their version of pan fried dumplings, and it's lovely presentation were spot on. My honey really enjoyed her fresh crab and California roll, #1 some thoroughly enjoyed his shrimp tempura and shrimp fried rice, and I was impressed with the delightful and generous Tonkotsu Ramen that had a creamy, thick, and rich pork bone broth, topped with chashu (pork belly), green onions, and nori (seaweed), very nicely done.  In addition to its dine-in services, Yukiyama offers carryout and delivery options and despite their Google page they do not require reservations and are open seven days from  11:10AM-10:20PM Bottom line: While their might be a little communication there's no misunderstanding that these folks know their way around a kitchen and put ourt an outstanding meal that will put a smile on your face. Recommended! To order online visit the Yukiyama Japanese Restaurant website at: https://www.yukiyamapittsburghpa.com

Yelp
Extremely fresh sushi! This place is a hidden gem and slept on. I have only had takeout from here so I cannot speak for the restaurant experience, but my takeout has always been exceptional. Very large pieces of fish and seafood in the rolls, large menu, good quality ingredients, and packaged well. I definitely want to see how the dine in experience stacks up to other sushi spots and will have to report back with how the service is

Yelp
Yukiyama is THE place for best value. It's an affordable option that doesn't compromise on fish quality. If you're a fan of salmon avocado or tuna rolls, it's half the cost of most other locations. Limited staff, so there may be some delays during peak dinner hours. Cute Totoro banners on the walls, but no real decoration theme.

Yelp
Service was slow, but attentive. Food was amazing! The ramen was so good!! The pork was grilled. Huge portions! High quality ingredients! I had the chasu ramen, my guest had the chicken ramen. The chicken looked like it came from the hibachi grill. It was good, but not katsu style, so a bit different. We also had shrimp tempura roll, and a spicy salmon avocado roll. My guest had the takoyaki, which was served very hot. It was all good. It was a ton of food for the price. Very pleasant atmosphere. We sat next to the window and didn't notice the music in the background. It was a very nice experience. Very relaxed, not rushed. Very authentic, reminiscent of my travels throughout Southeast Asia in the late nineties. Prices could not be beat. We ordered way too much, but only spent $60 including tip. We loved the openness of the restaurant, and ability to enjoy the fresh air and street view. We will be back, often, and with friends.

Yelp
We drank water out of red solo cups like some kind of college dorm room. The fish we ate was kinda gray. The vegan sushi was good. The nicer sashimi platter was nicer. I usually went for special rolls but I should have Stuck with the sashimi and vegan rolls! Service was good.

Yelp
Came here when trying to find a restaurant and had an interesting experience. The restaurant was completely when we entered so there was more than enough space for our party of 8. Service was a little odd, one server brought out waters in styrofoam cups and he was in charge of bringing out the food. There was only one other server we saw and I think he's the chef and owner of the restaurant. Ordering food was a little odd as well, the owner said that if all the food was on one check he can take our order, but if it's separate checks then we should use the QR code on the menu - which turns out is missing a few items that are on the menu. The menu is fairly large, though, with a lot of different dishes. There is a huge vegetarian/vegan list which was nice considering half of our group didn't eat meat. We got the chicken and shrimp hibachi dinner and the shrimp tempura roll - both tasted really good and flavorful! The food did take a while to come out, though. It seemed like only one or two dishes were coming out at a time so it took upwards of an hour to get our food. Overall, had a good experience because the food really did taste good, but not sure if I'll come back around because of the time spent here.

Yelp
I'm from NYC and have had incredible sushi throughout my life. This is definitely the best sushi in all of Pittsburgh. The fish quality is so good and the owner gets the fish from Japan. Prices are super reasonable. The portions are MASSIVE and the lunch special is such a great deal. The owner runs the shop on his own so service can be slow but he is the sweetest person ever. While we were there he gave us two miso soups and a pack of hichews for free. We also overheard the next table saying "I've been here five times and every single time the owner always does something nice." Support local!! This place is the best!!!!

Yelp
A friend and I came for a Saturday lunch from finding it on yelp. I was initially attracted to coming for the Totoro decor as am a huge fan. The restaurant was completely empty, we were the only customers at that time. It's very spacious but not a huge restaurant so imagine it could get full some periods. There is metered parking on the street that you can use the gopgh parking app for. They have lunch specials which includes weekends. We had the spring rolls, scallop sushi $7 (forgot name), and chicken ramen lunch special ($14). The ramen is big enough for two people in our opinions as we had a lot left. Really love the broth, stuck out for me! I took home leftover just for the broth. The bubble tea cups are really cute and you get a lot to drink for only $4, really good - just right touch of flavor. Recommend!

Yelp
After spending the night supporting our friend at her dance symposium, we went over to Murray avenue to try and find somewhere to eat. It was a little bit past 10 at night, so a lot of the restaurants had already closed. Luckily, Yukiyama was still open! When we sat down, we were the only people in the restaurants, so we were served right away. We had water in styrofoam cups, which was a little unusual, but we concluded that they did this because it was so close to closing. However, one of the cups at a hole in the bottom of it and water spilt out everywhere. To eat, we had the shrimp tempura roll, which were nicely sized pieces of sushi stuffed with a shrimp tempura. We had the gyozas to split, which we good but would have been much better fresh! The sauce that it was served with paired nicely with the gyoza tho! Lastly, the eel and avocado roll was probably our favorite. It came out a little warm and was delicious! We want to definitely come back to try some of the different items and experience the service when they are not right about to close.

Yelp
If you want a bang for your buck come here! Friendly staff, they got right to the chase.

Yelp
Food was very good. Sushi portions are ample. My husband and I shared the chicken and shrimp hibachi and spicy roll combo and had a ton of food left over. Will definitely go back!

Yelp
Good quantity and cheap. If you wanna walk in, get a bunch of rolls and snarf them down, I think this would be a perfect place. The rolls (at least the "classic" ones) are around 7 dollars and they are pretty fat. Service is a bit odd. I almost felt like I was intruding on the server's afternoon and he kinda just handed me my food at the table and left me alone which I'm fine with. Ramen isn't anything to write home about. It's 14 dollars but there really wasn't any depth to the broth and it tasted almost identical to instant ramen from Japan. Chashu came on the side and it was incredibly salty even when watered down by the broth. I'd recommend just ordering a bunch of cheap rolls.

Yelp
I tried their ramen for takeout this time. The overall flavors were good, but it was way overpriced and not authentic. If I had gone in with the expectation of a soup noodle with roasted beef and assorted veggies, I would still give it three stars. They did nicely pack the broth and the noodles separately for takeout. However, since I didn't pour out all the broth, I didn't see there was a hard boiled egg at the bottom of the broth! Not to mention the egg completely over cooked! The takoyaki was even more disappointing. I could hardly find any octopus in it! Instead of fish flakes they used shredded dried pork on top. The staff was very friendly when I picked up my food, and the overall restaurant experience was pleasant. I probably just won't order ramen or takoyaki here. Stick with sushi.

Yelp
Our group was trying to find a restaurant to accommodate our large party on a Friday night and we ended up stopping at Yukiyama since it was not busy at all. We were seated right away since the restaurant was completely empty. Service was a bit strange to say the least. One of the servers brought us all waters in disposable foam cups and we were told to order our food online if we wanted to split the check. My friend and I split the chicken hibachi dish and the shrimp tempura roll. Despite being the only ones in the restaurant, our food took forever to come out and did not come out all together so we had people in our group almost done eating while others were still waiting for some of their dishes. The food itself tasted fine but wasn't anything special. I personally didn't think it was worth the long wait and would prefer going to several of the other restaurants in Squirrel Hill.

Yelp
One of the best sushi in town, period. (especially post-chaya). 5 stars for a sushi lover, 3 if you have a date. The good: - They have some higher-end sushi options. (Jumbo Sweet Shrimp, scallop, Toro.) They are not cheap, but they have it. - Their tuna actually tasted good. Toro on par with kiku. - their deluxe combo came with aburi sushi (torched sushi). If you don't know what it is, try it. - Chirashi Don was not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for (lots of fish). The bad: - the price is in what I consider to be in the middle to high end. $$+ - As others pointed out, the dining area has no atmosphere. I would not take my date there. - I hated the chopped radish in my chirashi, just plain rice would have been perfect. - Why does the deluxe combo come with California Roll, but the regular combo come with Spicy Tuna Roll? it makes no sense to me... Certainly would be back for the sushi. Maybe by myself or not a date night. (I would come to this before going to kiku, sorry. Similar Toro, no parking.)

Nick B.

Yelp
Ordered Chicken Hibachi and it was not very good at all. The rice had a weird taste and texture. The 2 pieces of shrimp were the only thing that I enjoyed. The service was not the best but I'm not one to complain about that in most cases. The red solo cup for water doesn't bother me but it makes the place feel cheaper, yet the food wasn't cheap.

Yelp
This place SLAPS! They have very reasonable prices, and the sushi chef has this place locked down. Food is superb and fresh, the atmosphere is welcoming and chill, and the staff are very friendly. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
First time ordering (Uber Eats) and I'm an instant fan. As a lacto-ovotarian, sometimes ordering from new places can be disappointing. However, my food arrived early and it is SO delicious! They even threw in a complimentary miso soup. I'll definitely order and/or visit them again. (Order was Veggie fried rice, potato roll and Cali roll)
google avatar

Moshe L.

Yelp
The place looks a little old, due to losing a lot of sit in business during covid. Their lunch deal 3 rolls for $15 plus miso soup and a drink is a no question great quick meal here in squirrel hill. I would recommend this place for sushi over anywhere else in squirrel hill due to the lower price and great quality. I'm pretty picky on the cleanliness of a restaurant, but these guys need more love.

Yelp
3.5 STARS Yukiyama popped up on my Yelp a few days ago with 0 reviews, and since we were in Squirrel Hill and my boyfriend loves ramen, we decided to take the adventure and stop by for a bowl. the waiter suggested the purple sweet potato fries which were AMAZING. served with aioli, hot and crispy and in a generous portion, we couldn't stop eating them! the mango mochi ice cream was also a delightful dessert, perhaps a smidge more frozen than we'd like but still delicious and beautifully presented. honestly, we're wondering if we tunnel visioned into the ramen and this is perhaps a place that focuses on the sashimi/sushi. when we asked the waiter what the most popular items were, he quickly said sashimi, but I'm sometimes hesitant at newer sushi places, so I went for the duck ramen. it was too salty for my taste, the broth lacked the depth of flavor I wanted, and the noodles weren't limp, but they weren't springy either. the duck tasted like your standard Chinatown takeout duck. on the plus side, the portion was filling and the egg was cooked well! the waiter gave us space, but was attentive - our waters were always full and our empty plates were out of the way. the interior is cute and Totoro themed. we went early on a weekday for dinner so it was quiet enough to have good conversation. overall, a nice new addition to the squirrel hill scene, but probably not my place for ramen.

Yelp
The ambience was not much but the food was very good. There was a greasy smell in the air, but it didn't seem to affect the taste of the food. I think I would prefer take out to dine in.

Yelp
I ordered Takeout and I needed ramen in my life as it was too hot to cook. My A/C is barely working with this 90 something degree weather. The ramen came unassembled and I assembled it with grace. It looked perfect. I even put my cucumber roll inside of it for a photo. The broth was flavorful and this meal overall was very light. The shrimp was cooked to perfection. I absolutely enjoyed every layer of flavor in this meal. Next time I'm going to order more sushi from them.

Alan K.

Yelp
It looks like this wonderful restaurant has closed down. Can't get through on the phone, and a sign on the door says simply, Sorry we are closed. Sounds permanent. Best sushi, great ramen. Sad.

K N.

Yelp
I really loved this restaurant and found it during quarantine. My fiancé and I used to order and pick up often and sat in a few times since restrictions lifted. I brought some friends who were visiting a few weeks ago here since you get a lot of food for a good price. Everything was fine until we were getting the check and wrapping up. My fiancé (who is fair) stepped away to use the restroom. My two friends and I (who are Black and darker-skinned) were at the table when the person brought the check. They asked us if our boss was taking us out to lunch. I stated no and that person is my fiancé. It was a gross, weird assumption that was completely unprovoked and unprofessional. Will never come back.
google avatar

Keegan T.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the sushi here. The "Boston Roll" is just a little bit of crab stick, and cucumber, and LETTUCE (wtf?) with barely any rice and wrapped in nori. The spicy tuna was OK. The tempura shrimp roll was meh. I have never seen their sushi is basically salad with a little bit of rice. Also you have to order wasabi separate from your sushi I guess because we got none with any of the 5 rolls we ordered. Will not order again.
google avatar

Luke H.

Yelp
Be warned, the place is understaffed and orders take around 80 minutes right now during busy times. It has great food and especially excellent sushi, I highly recommend for service and food quality. Seems like a nice place with good management. Looked clean as well
google avatar

Neha C.

Yelp
The food is delicious but what makes this restaurant such a delight to go to is the hospitality of the owner. I have been there twice and each time, we were even offered small treats for dessert. Besides that, they also let me charge my phone while I ate and also charged my friend's phone. The portion size is good for the price. Improving the aesthetics of the interior would improve the overall experience of dining there but other than that, 5 stars.
google avatar

Samuel A.

Yelp
Great food, great portions. Authentic sushi, and you get what you pay for. No complaints in my experience! So far I've had the Yukiyama roll and the duck roll, both delicious. I don't have a pic of the duck roll but the I've got one of the Yukiyama. Notice the size of the roll compared to the other stuff on the table like the cup. These things are no joke lol.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a sushi place first! And HOLY MOLEY, they put out some very good sushi. Great price. Good flavor. Very soft and fatty. All around, very good mid tier sushi. But I would stop there. I tried the ramen, and it was pretty sub-par. Tonkatsu broth was very cloudy which means they over boiled the soup. It's fine, but nothing special. You can get better ramen from nearby. Gyoza was very good though! Crispy! So, again, I would absolutely come here for their sushi and dim sum! Very good!
google avatar

Yelp
From my experiences with Yukiyama, I've had absolutely delicious sushi impressively presented for take out that has been marred by sub-optimal pick-up experiences. Food: Sashima combination with chef's selection: I've got to hand it to the chef, whoever is putting these combinations together has continued to provide an impressive variety of sushi. Everything I've had, mackerel, scallop, squid, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, whatever-tail has tasted of very high quality. Ame-ebi - sweet shrimp with its head fried. The head is super crispy (just be careful not to stab your gums with its sharp shell). Again, tastes fresh and also high quality. Overall, I've had all but excellent experiences with their food which I would rate 5/5. However, in the last 2 of 3 pick-ups the restaurant did not have the order ready for whatever reason, and I've had to wait close to 30 minutes both times for them to prepare the order. Despite the delicious food, the wait is certainly not a plus - and because of what I believe is a language/culture barrier figuring out where/why the order is not ready has also been difficult (3/5 experience). However, when the experience runs smoothly you will be treated to a delightful Japanese meal!

Yelp
When I first came here during the pandemic I assumed they weren't yet open for indoor dining since their dining room looked like it had been partially re-purposed into a storage room and part of it seemed to be set aside fo ra side business related to repairing iphones and tutoring (although I never saw anyone in that area providing those services the few times I went). The second time I went I realized the dining room was in fact open but most of their business now seems to be takeout. The menu is vast with much more than just sushi, including ramen, noodles, teppanyaki, etc. The food is very good and reasonably priced with large portions and the service friendly. However, the ambience of the dining room could use some work. It is quite dark and all the clutter makes the space feel less clean. There's a bunch of random things laying around on shelves without much organization, a sushi bar that is no longer being used (it is prepared in the back instead), and a fish tank partially drained of water with no fish. It is also unclear what is going on with the side business setup in part of the dining room. I thought they were still in transition if they just opened back up again but when I returned a few months later it was the same situation. I think they would get a lot more dine-in business if they fixed things up a bit.

Dmitri A.

Yelp
Tiny sushi size. Barely any fish. This is $26 for the box and $10 for the "toro". I cannot recomendable them. Do not order to go. Smallest portions I've ever received. Low quality too. "toro" isn't quality toro.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
We have been here twice now. The fish here is amazing. No question that this is the best fish in Pittsburgh. The pieces may be small, but they are amazing. They are buttery and there is absolutely no fishy flavor - quality over quantity, guys. The roles are okay, but there is no point when the nigiri and sashimi are this good. I'm terrified they are going to close and take my fish away! Some of the appetizers are good (fried sweet potato, tako taki (best I've had), egg rolls) but with fish like this who cares?

Yelp
We ordered delivery on a Friday night and were really pleased overall. I had a combo of sashimi, sushi roll, gyoa, and sushi. The amount of food was plenty for the price and I thought the quality was good. I judge a sushi place by the availability and quality of ikura (salmon roe). A lot of places don't have it at all, and it doesn't taste right at some that do. This place was a winner. The packaging was a little wonky, I guess; but other than that, we really enjoyed our meals and would definitely order again. Notes about the packaging. The sushi comes on small trays - maybe 1-3 items per tray depending on what you order - no issue there. The soy sauce is in a plastic cup with a lid, that is then put in a tiny individual bag (for leakage). It did leak and there wasn't quite enough of it. We also didn't have quite enough wasabi.
google avatar

Mandy C.

Yelp
I have generally been disappointed with sushi in Pittsburgh, but Yukiyama is a welcome exception. The salmon was delicious. Tasted fresh and melted in your mouth. Recommend!

Joshua B.

Yelp
Overall I would say you are better off somewhere else for sushi or ramen. I ordered the duck ramen, a spicy tuna, and a philly roll (the two rolls I judge all sushi restaurants on - for better or for worse). The philly and spicy tuna rolls were ok. Nothing particularly great about them, but also not bad. I think you can get better sushi at Sakura (or my favorite squirrel hill sushi joint - Te cafe). The ramen was underwhelming. The duck was more bone than meat and not nearly enough of it to justify all the bones. The broth was bland and the vegetables seemed all over the place, and didn't fully belong. All of this would be a 3 star rating if the services were not incredibly sub par. We were each pre portioned an amount of soy sauce (that was not enough for either) and never saw our server to get more. Finally upon finishing, we were mostly ignored until we got frustrated and walked up to pay our bill. The decor was dark (we went at lunch time) and you could see sunbeams through the curtains and made evident from the smoke from frying food. My recommendation... save time, save money, go somewhere else.

Yelp
I tried this restaurant for the first time today. I was overwhelmingly satisfied that they offered salmon don (raw salmon over sushi rice), which most sushi restaurants in the area do not. I am a lover of raw salmon and the salmon they offer here is extremely fresh! I can't wait to try other raw fish and sushi on their menu!

Yelp
Dropped in for a quick bite of dinner. It took about 15-20 minutes for my order of Chirashi to come out. The place has dim lighting and not many seats available for dining. Soft music selections from Ghibli film was playing at the time. Onto the food. I was a little disappointed by the portion size for the cost but my Chirashi was pretty fun to eat. Crunchy, diced, pickled vegetables and shredded icrab were mixed into the bowl which is not typical fare to my limited experience and there was some scallops included in the bowl. Still taking out 1 star for the portion size as I had to get take out elsewhere but the food was good.

Yelp
Largest rolls I've ever seen. (So don't order too many.) Very generous with the amount of tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, especially for the price. Will return.

Yelp
Yukiyama has a good thing going, and I think I'd come again if I'm hungry in the area. They've got these really amazing purple potato fries, which were recommended by the waiter. We were going to get the gyoza until he mentioned them. They came with a great mayo sauce, which added a lot of depth to the fries. The waiter really did seem to know the menu well, or at least what to highlight to customers. We should have listened to him about the main courses though. Not to say that the main courses we got were horrible. In fact, I actually enjoyed my pork ramen -- I thought it was tasty. But he suggested that we get the sashimi, and I think that we probably should have, in retrospect. The ramen was more salty than I'm used to (maybe that was what they were going for, but I think I'm used to a richer, more porky broth). The chashu, which I was expecting to be the highlight of the soup, was really thin. I'm used to thicker cuts of meat in my ramen, and I think that it really did detract from the quality of the meal. The noodles were nothing to write home about. There were some green veggies in the ramen that I don't think were traditional Japanese veggies for ramen. Then we had mochi ice cream for dessert (he recommended again -- mango) and it was decent. Above average presentation, too. Some final thoughts -- the restaurant was very empty, but I won't hold that against them, seeing that they're very new. I think the awning over the restaurant was from an old restaurant that used to be there, so that might have hurt them. Everything was reasonably priced. So, I'll probably come again if I'm in the area, but this time, I'll try their sashimi.

Yelp
I decided to stray from my usual spots and explore a restaurant in squirrel hill. This used to be Curry on Murray but has completely switched food profiles. I came at lunchtime. It was completely empty when I walked in, but this restaurant isn't that close to many of the shops in squirrel hill, so I assume it doesn't get as much traction when the students are in school. It was a lot smaller on the inside than I had expected. I ordered off of their lunch menu. Having read some of the reviews here, I opted out of ramen as many people didn't seem wild and went for their sushi instead (that seemed to get better praise). I ordered two simple rolls: spicy tuna and a salmon roll. It was a good deal for their lunch special as both rolls together were $8. However, it was advertised online that the lunch special came with miso soup. I should've checked before I left, but I didn't receive any soup with my order. Regardless, $8 for two sushi rolls is a good discount. The sushi quality however was not that great. I'm not really sure what the material is called, but they stuff the rolls with this bread crumb-y like stuff, and I hate when restaurants do that. Just give a smaller roll, but that ingredient dries out the sushi and ruins it for me. The salmon roll was OK because it didn't include that, but even still, I wasnt wild about the roll itself. I think for having spent $8, I am content, but I don't think I'll be getting sushi next time

Yelp
Every dish was very very good! Duck ramen, sweet purple potato, eel sushi, and beautifully presented by a one chef operation. Lovely complimentary mochi for after

Yelp
Never going here again. This restaurant is affordable only in person. Online it's an additional 30% but they refuse to answer their phone in the building. Once I called and they answered and instructed me to order online for their convenience. But they give no regard for their customers convenience, for we waited 50 minutes over on a single roll order. They charged an extra 5$ online and told me "better luck next time" when I asked them about it. Please spend your time and money elsewhere.

Yelp
The chirashi was repulsive - I actually cringed at some of things I ate. My wife had the duck ramen, which was a simple powder mix with duck thrown in. The eel roll we had was average at least, but overall a terribly disappointing (and expensive) meal. The service was also subpar where we were literally the only people in the restaurant, but had to go up to get our bill at the end. I can see why we were the only ones there, will certainly not be back.

Yelp
Great sushi. I lived in Tokyo for a year and am discerning in my sushi taste. I'm not an expert, but I know high quality fish when I taste it. I stopped in to try the sushi appetizer and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish. The texture, taste, and freshness were right in line with what I had come to expect at high end restaurants in Japan. I was also delighted to find subtle herbal and savory highlights in a couple of the pieces. Unexpected but appreciated. Service was quick and very personal. I look forward to returning and trying more from their menu.

Yelp
This is my new GoTo Sushi spot - I get the sushi Sashimi combo and I am wowed by the fresh selection of wonderful seafood. Also get the eel over rice and a couple extra yellowtail and scallion ($4) rolls on the side. With every order the chef puts in a free surprise drink. A very nice touch.

Yelp
The sushi was amazing: the best fatty tuna I've ever eaten. If we return, it will definitely be only for take-out. The service was neither present nor friendly.
