I've been on a few brewery tours in my day. Drank a number of flights. But have I ever seen a retro 1960's coca-cola bottle cleaning machine being used regularly to wash most of the Yukon's recyclable brown bottles? Not until my visit to the brewery whose namesake is a territory full of rugged terrain, and beer loving folk!
There's a reason why Yukon Brewing has over 50% of the Yukon's market share - they're bloody good! Beer worth freezing for, actually. Lead Dog Ale, Yukon Red, Discovery, and (worth suffering through a wheat allergy) Cranberry Wheat Ale top my list of favourites. Case in point, one year my sorta-sister-in-law sent me beer for my birthday, like via Canada Post. And I savoured every last drop and then hinted that I could easily take that as a gift every single year! And years later, here I am, yelping about it!
Our tour guide kept the beer flowing both on the official part of the tour, and then afterward in the store, giving us the opportunity to sample casks before filling up our growlers - which we tipsily did. One even made it back down to Vancouver where we drank it a full week later. If you're thinking about doing it, bring a growler from home or purchase one there and fill er up! I like the birch beer myself.
The store has a surprising amount of beer gear: magnets, bottle openers, buckets, t-shirts, hoodies. They also carry a vodka distilled in the Yukon called Solstice and some additional wares from local artists.
One of the highlights of my last Yukon trip, for sure.
