12 Culinary Festivals to Fuel Your Next Trip to Canada

"A one-day celebration for brewing enthusiasts to taste small-batch, craft, and artisanal beers from local and continental brewers, with curated sessions like a Connoisseur Hour for guided sampling and learning. The event pairs well with Whitehorse’s wider winter traditions, which culminate in a seasonal Rendezvous festival a few weeks earlier." - Waheeda Harris

Read about this place prior to driving to Whitehorse to pick up my daughter from Yukon University. Visited about 30 minutes prior to them closing, and were disappointed that we missed out on grabbing a flight as the guy there seemed to just maybe want to sell us some beer, Two Brewers whisky and some glasses. Experience was disappointing but the beer and whisky is great. If I’m back in Whitehorse again, I’ll stop by and try for a flight again.

This is a must see. This little craft brewery and distillery has won many national and international awards. You must arrange for a tour! Seeing exactly how beer is made from malting to brewing and canning will give you a greater appreciation for your favorite brewski. Seeing how you can distill award winning whisky on this small location is impressive. Don't forget to bring cold cuts to have with the flavored beer sample flights after.

I am not a beer-drinker but this brewary got me. Really the best beer I have ever had! I highly recommend. It’s a must if you’re in Whitehorse

Loved it! Stop in if you are in Whitehorse! Everything we tried was so good!

Google
My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon, we were the only ones there but it was great. Music was good and a few people stopped through to fill up their growlers. We LOVED the Rye IPA 👌 Nice merchandise and labels too, very nice Yukon vibes. Very clean and well decorated too! Wish they had some nibbles, would of enjoyed some hot fries 😊

Google
While I wish there were more beers on tap, the selection that is available incentives you enough to get ones you haven't tried! Their whiskey is great, as well! Perfect winter activity for a Sunday afternoon!

Google
Had a great stop here on a Sunday right when they opened. They have so much selection now from when we last visited 10 years ago. This will definitely be a stop anytime we make it to Whitehorse. Staff was very friendly. Plus a customer discount program can't be beat.

Google
Friendly service, good beer. Vibes were a little low for a Friday night though...

Yelp
Super cute place, very nice staff. Beer was cold and very good. Easy access to brewery.

Yelp
This place gets a 5 star just on their awesome business. I am not a beer guy but we ordered a flight and I did try each though didnt finish surprisingly pumpkin spice was really good! However what I really like is the community work they do. Over $18,000 in charity donations this year alone & to me thats a good business. Didnt try the whiskey but maybe 1 day!

Yelp
Had to stop into this brewery before heading back to Alberta. They had a pumpkin spice beer so I had to try it. It was so smooth and delicious. It wasn't over powering with spices it was well balanced. This place is cozy and inviting. They have board games to play as you enjoy your beers...which we took advantage of. Our bartender was very friendly and helped me pick what I wanted to drink. I had the pumpkin spice for $7.35. Well worth it. I'd come here again and again.

Yelp
Loved the brewery. Great beers and ambiance. Visited several times while visiting from Florida

Yelp
First time in Whitehorse and wanted a good beer. After checking Yelp, Trip Advisor and Google I settled on Yukon Brewing. They have some interesting selections made from local flora, such as Fireweed Honey Pale Ale, Spruce Tip Pale Ale and Birch Sap Amber. I settled on the Amber, which turned out to be a great, full bodied beer.

Yelp
Amazing stop on the way to AK. The beer is great and the service was fantastic. 10/10 brewery tasting room experience.

Carmen R.

Yelp
The tour was very informative and the flight of beer after was really tasty. I appreciate being able to try a few different flavors to see what I like beatz and I gravitated towards the fruity flavors..

Yelp
SuperGood seltzer!!! The best. Sold in Yukon and Alberta. Will have to smuggle to BC. Like the branding and flavours.

Yelp
"Beer Worth Freezing For!" (Thank You Peter S.). I tipped an Arctic Red and a Grizzly at the High Country Inn with my Earthwatch buddies just after our plane back from Camp 222 landed (and we all had a chance to shower). And both pints went down very well with the fish and chips and the companionship. Next time I'm in town, maybe I'll actually visit the brewery itself and take some home.

Yelp
If the Yukon Brewing Company were located in a place known for microbreweries like BC or Oregon or Colorado, it would be a well respected brewery, among the best of an excellent bunch. But for a beer lover from Portland living in the Yukon, a city kid recently moved to a small town (but don't let people from the Communities hear you call Whitehorse that), it plays not a small part in making Whitehorse a town that is great to live in. That's because Yukon Brewing Company makes a wide variety of super tasty beers. The Yukon Red amber ale quite deservedly won 2009 Canadian Beer of the Year in the Amber Ale category. The Cranberry Wheat Ale and the Discovery Ale with fireweed honey are a couple of excellent beers with local flavour. They bottle a pale lager, an espresso stout, a pale ale, a strong ale, and an IPA. Yukon Brewing also sells growlers of whatever they have on tap, which sometimes includes seasonal beers or one-offs, such as a winter ale, ESB (which was SUPER), and a European hefeweizen with that fruity yeasty flavour. Every weekday at 2 the very friendly staff give a tour of the facilities. You can learn about brewing, see their antique 1960s bottle washer, and sample the various kinds of beer they make. I strongly recommend it for visitors, and they also welcome residents--I think I've been on three tours in 8 months of living here.

Yelp
"Beer Worth Freezin For" Best slogan ever! Everytime I go home to Whitehorse I make it a priority to stop in at the Brewery for a quick visit. They offer free tours, ya, FREE. And they always have a few extra special brews on tap to taste along with the old faithfuls. Speaking of great slogans, their case of beer is called a "Thirst Aid Kit". Brilliant. The Cranberry Wheat Ale is really easy to drink on a long summers night, and the Arctic Red is great with a dirty steak. You can buy a Growler at the brewery (half gallon jug) for about $10 and fill it up at their taps with any beer and take it home with you. Brilliant again! I have brought some on the plane back to Vancouver, and it is still fresh and tasty a few days later. Cheers to one of the best breweries in Canada.

Yelp
On a road trip through the Yukon and long time craft beer fans, we had to stop and do a tour. This was my first Yukon and Canadian beer and I really like it! I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and found it informative. I thought it was a great value for the samples you got as well. My favorite was also getting to try the spirits, I was really impressed them and didn't expect them on a beer tour!

Yelp
Very malt-centric. If you like sweet beer then this is the beer for you. Its available all over the city. All their beer pretty much tastes the same: caramel heavy and non-existant hop notes combine to make a line of beers that I actively avoid. Occasionally its the only beer available at a restaurant or pub...this is the occasion for me to flex my oenophile muscles and have a glass of red. The stars are for the staff...not the beer.

Yelp
I've been on a few brewery tours in my day. Drank a number of flights. But have I ever seen a retro 1960's coca-cola bottle cleaning machine being used regularly to wash most of the Yukon's recyclable brown bottles? Not until my visit to the brewery whose namesake is a territory full of rugged terrain, and beer loving folk! There's a reason why Yukon Brewing has over 50% of the Yukon's market share - they're bloody good! Beer worth freezing for, actually. Lead Dog Ale, Yukon Red, Discovery, and (worth suffering through a wheat allergy) Cranberry Wheat Ale top my list of favourites. Case in point, one year my sorta-sister-in-law sent me beer for my birthday, like via Canada Post. And I savoured every last drop and then hinted that I could easily take that as a gift every single year! And years later, here I am, yelping about it! Our tour guide kept the beer flowing both on the official part of the tour, and then afterward in the store, giving us the opportunity to sample casks before filling up our growlers - which we tipsily did. One even made it back down to Vancouver where we drank it a full week later. If you're thinking about doing it, bring a growler from home or purchase one there and fill er up! I like the birch beer myself. The store has a surprising amount of beer gear: magnets, bottle openers, buckets, t-shirts, hoodies. They also carry a vodka distilled in the Yukon called Solstice and some additional wares from local artists. One of the highlights of my last Yukon trip, for sure.

Yelp
While in Whitehorse, I was not able to visit the brewery. However, while in the Yukon, their beers were my only beverage choice besides water. The Red and Gold ales are great beers. I wish they were distributed in Florida. If I had an extra bag, I might have tried to bring a case home with me. I hope I have the opportunity to sample these beers again.

Yelp
It's honestly really sad what has happened to this company. Unfortunately it's become a victim of it's own success. This review is about the actual retail store and not the quality of the beer it produces. My family has lived in the Yukon for over 20 years and always have ferociously defended and supported local businesses. Ever since Yukon brewing has opened up a retail store and sold growlers from their location we've been loyal customers. No more. Perhaps they've just gotten used to treating tourists like garbage and have carried that attitude over to local Whitehorse residents, but when you walk into the store the contempt on the employee's faces is pretty hard to ignore. Just this summer I bought some Yukon brewing glasses for $7.00 each, not cheap but great graphics and good glassware, 6 month later, a 100% increase in price. What's that? Oh, yes, here comes the "oh, our operating costs have gone up", puhleeaze, gee, that's funny, the price of growlers hasn't changed. How about the $80 chinese made paper thin hoodie? Maybe this is all good, maybe they have just found out that the tourists don't care and will pay anything. But since their success was built on the loyalty of Yukoners, it's a pretty bitter victory if you ask me and says volumes about the soul and management of this company.

Yelp
We travel the United States and Canada and are always looking for the next "BEST" craft beer/brewery. This was our first time in the Yukon and the beers at this brewery did not disappoint. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and it was a 'beer worth freezing for!'

Yelp
If you drink beer and you happen to be in the yukon then you probably already have had beer from here before. If you are curious about the beer then go for one of their tours to check it out, it won't take long and it's worth it (free!) Bring a growler (or buy one) and get it filled with one of their sessional specials. While they cost a little more for a fill than places in the south, they won't ding you for a taste. The yukon red or Gold are just OK, I find their scottish ale or milk stout really tasty.

Yelp
Awesome brewery. Was coming up from the lower 48, great stop in Whitehorse. I'm 20 (drinking age in Yukon is 19), and not quite 21 yet so it was nice as an adult to actually be able to go in to a brewery and be able to buy something and taste some beers! Great staff, very helpful and they suggested which beers they thought would suit my palette. They were very tasty. Would go back if I was traveling through Whitehorse again.

Yelp
Stopped here for a tour on my way to Alaska (moving there) Tour and tasting was awesome. Great beer with a staff that are true beer connoisseurs. You gotta visit here if you're stopping in Whitehorse!

Yelp
As a well traveled beer drinker I was happy with the variety of the beers both on tap and bottled available at the brewery! I thoroughly enjoyed the Charming or Tedious maple wee heavy, and That Good Ship Baltic Porter. The "beerista" was friendly, and knowledgeable about their offerings!

Yelp
Brewery tour was awesome, highly recommended. Afterwards you got to taste all of their beers, and then buy the ones you liked! Yukon red was my fav!

Yelp
The new Discovery is to live for!! Haven't tried it on tap yet but will soon and I'm pretty sure I will not be disappointed!! Keep up the Marvelous job folks!!

Yelp
Yukon Brewing is an awesome Yukon company. Everything is done on site in Whitehorse, from brewing award winning delicious beers to the bottling and packaging. They also employ local artists to create their uniquely Yukon beer boxes. They have the best beer tasting tour I have ever been on. You get to taste all the beers on tap and bottles (free!) and learn about how this company goes beyond lip service when it comes to community involvement. I have yet to be at an event in the Yukon that does not have a touch from Yukon Brewing. Cheers!

Chris N.

Yelp
Yukon Brewing has a wide variety of different beers, lots of things you can't get other places. I was also impressed with some of their spirits - the barrel aged schnapps was very good.

Mike B.

Yelp
Stopped in because I stayed in Whitehorse as part of a cross continent trip. The guy was awesome, tasted all 6 taps, talked about each one, and made small talk about my travels. I was expecting like a taproom bit it's more like a liquor store, just fyi. Good deals on pricing too! All the beers were delicious too, the rye IPA was my favorite. Awesome service and quality, a must do in Whitehorse!

Scott S.

Yelp
This is a review of the combination of the brewery tour and the tasting of the beer itself. I give the former a "2" and the latter a "4." I liked a few things about the tour--fascinating glimpse of the process in a brewery that is small enough to be local but large enough to be doing broader distribution. Their use of recycled bottles from their competition is particularly cool. While the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about every micro-step of the process, she reminded me of a brilliant college professor who taught classes only because it was required, and put little effort into it. The whole thing went by in a flash, there was little space for discussion. This would have been fine if it was free, but it cost $10, which included very small (1 oz.) tastes of 8 beers and a vodka. (They don't actually serve beer on the premises, though you can fill up a growler.) Not a particularly good value. But it would be with a more personalized and interesting tour. And not the worst way to spend a little time on a rainy afternoon. The beer itself is generally good. I especially liked the red, the gold and the iceberg IPA (which is much more subtle and artful than most of the sledgehammer-like IPAs being served back in Seattle). I don't care for the bland brown ale, which unfortunately is what I had ordered in a bar a few days earlier. Needless to say, my expectations were exceeded with their nice, diverse line. They also had some special batches on hand (not part of the tour tasting), and these were really interesting, especially a spicy Belgian ale.
