"A new restaurant revolving around an eclectic mix of Asian street food recently opened on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. Yum Zab! is a fast-casual establishment launched by Klin Sritong and his wife, Ai. Some of its top-selling dishes include a spicy Korean fried chicken rice bowl, steamed Hainanese chicken with ginger rice, a Korean fried chicken sandwich, Japanese wagyu sando, and kaya toast, a popular snack in Singapore and Malaysia that features a rich and sweet jam made with pandan, coconut milk, and eggs. The counter-service space features a takeout counter where customers order on a computer screen and a few sidewalk tables for dining in. Open daily at 11:30 a.m., the restaurant stays open until 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. most days except Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It replaces Rhythm’s Chicken & Waffles, the fried chicken outfit that amassed quite a following on social media and reopened as Mom’s Chicken and Waffles in the U-31 nightclub in North Park. Yum Zab!’s owner Klin Sritong has worked in area Thai restaurants and hails from a family of restauranteurs; his brother Krit and his mother operate Charm Thai Kitchen in Rancho Bernardo. Yum Zab! derives from a Thai expression meaning a “delicious mixture of things,” explains Sritong. Sritong tells Eater that they plan on expanding and are eyeing the South Park neighborhood as their next location." - Helen I. Hwang

It’s YummmmmZAbout time I leave a review for one of my favorite spots in SD! 10/10 couldn’t recommend this place more* come hungry leave happy :) I’ll give you my tl;dr first - this place will make your taste buds and bellies very happy and you’ll want to come back to try more things on the menu. Everything I’ve ordered here was super delicious and hit the spot - you know what spot that is when it it gets hit ya know? This small but cute shack has a little bit of everything for everyone. My favorites were the Seoul Nashville fried chicken rice bowl and the steamed Hainanese chicken rice bowl so far! Here’s the long version: I first started coming here after hearing about the newest Asian foodie spot in town. Stayed at an Airbnb for a couple months down the road and saw lots of great reviews and had to check it out for myself. I don’t leave reviews on Yelp very often but this place is worthy of my time and attention. Ordering is super easy by iPad right outside of the humble home kitchen. Upon walking up I was able to meet and speak with Klin and Ai, both the brains and the bodies behind this gem of an eatery. They were super welcoming and kind and I already felt like a friend just coming over for lunch only it happened to be the Friday the 13th in October. Only had Good Luck that day because I found what my heart was looking for after all this time, Asian SOUL FOOD 🙌🏽 I ordered what they were promoting for the first time, the Seoul Nashville fried chicken bowl. This was the perfect amount of spice with a super light but flavorful Gluten Free batter(upon request…yes they can do it. If you’re searching gluten free or GF, this is your green light to order any fried chicken here) , perfect crispiness. It had a slight sweetness but also rich smoky aftertaste. Super flavor balanced. Pairs well with their kimchi and I think I added sweet corn or edamame for because more veggies make it healthy lol. My girl ordered the honey teriyaki fried chicken bowl. Same gluten free batter on this one so we could SHARE because we aren’t weird and only eat the dish we order for ourselves. The Honey Teriyaki flavor was a sweet contrast from the spice I got from the Seoul bowl. It wasn’t too sweet or saucy as you’d expect from a Japanese spot but since it was on fried chicken the crunch with the honey teriyaki worked harmoniously. Our friends ordered the Japanese Curry Fried chicken bowl and I was able to steal a bite and it tasted like a nice Japanese hug inside a capsule hostel with your best friend of the opposite sex. Comfort food central! If you like Japanese curry and want that non-panko fried chicken twist..this one’s for you. Our other friend got the Spicy Korean fried chicken rice bowl. Definitely had a kick but the sweetness in the sauce cancelled much of the spice it was enjoyable. These two dishes weren’t gluten free but just as delicious and honestly barely noticed a difference between both batters. The Hainanese chicken I got a different day was oh so good especially on a cold day when you’re craving Chicken Soup for the Soul. The chicken broth on the side is a nice touch and the sweet ginger sauce ties the steamed(or fried if desired) chicken altogether. Love this for anyone feeling under the weather or just want a more fresh less heavy feeling rice bowl. First time I had something similar to this was at Nong’s Khao Man Gai in Portland. Never thought I’d have it again but I’m so glad I now know where to get my fix in town. Altogether I’ve probably come about 5-7 different times total but I’ll be back many more. Gotta work down the whole menu and they’re always coming up with new specials! Honorable mentions: -Korean corn dog- good tangy starchy sweet n juicy -The Spicy Tamarind fried chicken rice bowl- savory tangy, little sweet, but added extra spice and it was a good burn mmMmmm. -Kaya Toast - coconut jammy simple sandwich with eggy soy sauce dip. Sweet/savory/salty. Tastes authentic!

Love this place! The chicken is the perfect amount of crispy and most of the spices and sauces are great. I’ve been to this place 10+ times and, so far, my favorites are the Spicy Korean Rice Bowl, the Teriyaki Chicken Rice bowl, and the Popcorn Chicken appetizer. I would highly recommend Yum Zab! if you’re looking for American fried chicken with Asian sauces and spices.

Google
Small spot with some big flavors, chicken is nice and crisp, sauce is a mix of taste, and the choices are spot on. Makes you want to come back and try everything. Not to mention the chill people behind the screen making things happen.

Yelp
Came here to fulfil a craving for kaya toast after our recent trip to Singapore. While the toast and kaya were good, what we were served didn't have the signature cold butter slice that elevates the toast. Even though their menu and photo on their website shows it correctly we were served open faced toast with kaya on it. Maybe we ordered it wrong when we mentioned we didn't want the egg I'm definitely going to come back here to try their other food especially the hainanese chicken and rice and will probably have a chat to see why the kaya toast wasn't as described on their menu and will probably bump it up to 5 stars. .

Yelp
Finally dropped by this place tonight after reading recently that the ever so amazing Klin is co-running this with his wife. Was a huge fan of his boba shop (Good Moments Tea) in National City, so it was a pleasant surprise to check out his new spot. It's a cool little place with a variety of appetizers, chicken/poke bowls, sandwiches and desserts. Ordered on the tablet outside, and the food didn't take too long to come out. Dined outside since there were some tables set out (yay!), and ended up with some time to catch up with Klin and meet the wife which was very nice. The food itself was awesome. The popcorn chicken was well breaded and had a lemon flavor that added to its seasoning (we had chosen the Tom Yum flavor). The Hainanese Chicken Rice Bowl had a nice texture to it plus the flavors were really good and sorta reminded me of a family dish growing up. The Yum Zab! Fried Chicken Bowl had a lot of flavors in it, which were so good together. Got the option to do half salad/half rice, plus it came with a dressing that went really well with it. Overall, it was a really great experience and I'll be sure to make more trips to PB for this place since I don't frequent the area too often. Oh, plus they offer a $10 lunch option which is such a deal. Thanks once again and be sure to check them out!

Yelp
A Thai couple has opened a fast-casual eatery in the PB space that had housed a local chicken and waffle joint for several years. The menu was a mix of different cuisines with offerings ranging from Hainanese Chicken to Korean Corn Dogs to poke bowls. A couple of small tables were available out front on the sidewalk if you wanted to eat on-site, but this was primarily a take-out service window. Using the tablet that was located on the front door, the first item I ordered was the Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken. A set of little nuggets were seasoned with one of four different powders. Original was my pick. One of seven dipping sauces came with the order. I chose the Thai Sweet Chili. The amount of chicken was decent but pricey at $8. The second item I bought was the Wagyu Sando ($17) which has a limited daily quantity. A 4 oz ribeye steak was breaded lightly and then deep fried to medium-rare doneness. The menu photo showed buttery milk toast, however my sando was served on a regular hamburger style bun. I asked for a light amount of the tangy tonkatsu sauce. The meat was fatty and tender as it should be for wagyu quality. The diverse menu has its pros and cons. I think eventually the number of items will need to be tapered to a more concise core. For now, I rated my visit to Yum Zab at a four star level.

Yelp
We visited this hole-in-the-wall at Pacific Beach looking for some late night Asian food, and Yum Zab definitely delivered! Klin was so nice and even delivered to our car in the rain. He also gave us a free Thai tea for checking in on Yelp! As for the food which came promptly, we got the Hainanese Chicken Garlic Ginger Rice, which was filled with fragrant flavors and came with the perfect soup for a rainy day. My personal favorite was the Seoul Nashville Fried Chicken Rice Bowl, which I added spice to. It was perfectly crunchy and packed a spicy kick that I absolutely loved. We found ourselves filled up by the meal and will definitely be returning to try more options!

Yelp
Pay close attention or you can easily miss this small little restaurant walking down Garnett Street in Pacific Beach! We were hungry so decided to get a couple of things from this restaurant and had a really great time talking to one of the owners of that shop. You can tell the food was prepared with a lot of care and attention and it came through in the flavors. The only thing that I would've preferred is crispier chicken and fries. Unfortunately it did not have that crunch that I love with fried chicken and french fries and I'm not sure if it lost that due to the sauce on it. Will definitely try more items from this restaurant in the future.

Yelp
We were in PB a few weekends ago walking around and stumbled across this new spot: Here's my food recommendations: - Seoul Nashville Fried Chicken Rice Bowl - Hainanese Chicken Rice Bowl - Pandan Kaya Toast My hubby loved the hainan chicken bowl! It was tender and great flavors. Make sure you order the kaya toast. This is a rarity in SD. If you know you know! Overall a good value. The cute couple owns this new spot and was very friendly. This place is mostly takeout and 2 small tables outdoors. Overall, we enjoyed our food and definitely will be back! Bookmark this spot if you're in PB. GO SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES!!

Yelp
I generally enjoyed my Hainan Chicken Rice meal. I thought it was a solid value at $15 with an included side salad and expected broth. The sauce was some kind of lightly spiced, peanuty, garlicky situation that was tasty; although, I would have preferred a ginger scallion sauce. I also got a chicken tender with Tom Yum powder which was tasty. I would prefer the broth to have less white pepper in it. I do like white pepper, but this was just too much. Great to see partially compostable packaging, but with all the lids and wraps and all the other jazz, it still felt excessive. Service from the two owners was solid, friendly, and thoughtful. I will be coming back in the future.

Yelp
Yum Zab is Yummy! Occupying the space of another former fried chicken joint, this new tiny fast casual restaurant takes fried chicken in a a direction with more Asian flavors. There were many options of fried chicken rice bowls to choose from but, since they were offering a special for Friday the 13th, I decide to go with their Seoul Nashville Fried Chicken Rice Bowl for $10.13. The bowl came with a good ratio of rice, chicken, and Kim chi. The crispy, golden-brown chicken was well seasoned with the perfect amount of spice and incredibly juicy. It was placed on a bed of fluffy, perfectly cooked rice. It was delicious! I also ordered the six chicken wings, topped with their ghost rider chili. I was a little surprised it was sweet but it went well with the spice, which had a combo of Carolina Reaper, Ghost, and Thai dried chili. The wings were a good size, juicy, and cooked to perfection. I will be back to order the Hainense Chicken rice! It looks like homey, comfort food and I cannot wait!

Peter K.

Yelp
New spot to try on the strip. Unique spot with great juicy chicken. Service was fast as well.

Alan S.

Yelp
I love that there is a Hainanese Chicken place in PB. Furthermore, it's creative take on frying the chicken fits the pallet of many locals. They do offer both options of traditional and fried, but I had to tried the fried one because I never heard of it done that way. The service was stellar and they even added a note to my lunch. Smell was great and the larger chunks of ginger and garlic didn't throw me off, I like that, but I could see others finding that surprising. The soup and salad they give with the lunch special was great. I'm glad I came to try what they have here and I think it's worth your time to try this place. It's not going to be super traditional Hainanese chicken but they are getting the flavor mix and feel right. Outside had a few seats and you can always enjoy the lunch specials.

Glenn D.

Yelp
We went there when it first opened and we are very impressed. We tried it a again on the second time recently for Dinner, and we got really satisfied. The food was well presented, service was good and the prices reasonable. Highly recommend this place!

GiGi V.

Yelp
I had the Hainanese Chicken Garlic Ginger Rice. it was so delicious and the flavor is authentic, Highly recommended this place

Yelp
This is my second 5/5 star review for Yum Zab. I ordered the vegan chicken sweet Thai chili bowl and it is absolutely DELICIOUS. The vegan chicken is cooked perfectly and they packed this bowl to the brim, I am so appreciative and impressed by them yet again. They are also the most kind people and the service is fantastic! I love Yum Zab!!!

Natalie R.

Yelp
on a lovely saturday afternoon we turned to yelp to find where we'd get dinner. found this place and boy, was it delightful! we got the tonkatsu chicken bowl and the spicy korean chicken bowl to go. definitely would recommend getting to go as parking is rough in the area and there is limited seating. it's got a cool vibe to it and service is quick! the bowls are customizable and so delicious! lots of familiar asian flavors mixed with perfectly cooked fried chicken. definitely try it out, looking to add this place into our regular rotation!

Devin S.

Yelp
Please try this place and help out a local business. Great option for late night - the spicy Korean bowl is A+. Rather than waiting in line for garbage in the drive thru at the McDonald's across the street, get out of your car and try something new.

Chris J.

Yelp
I love this place! I'm Asian-American and for me it has been quite difficult to find a decent Asian cuisine in PB that suits the Asian tastebud. Yumzab definitely checked all the boxes for me: the perfect rice texture, moist chicken and high quality ingredients. I only ordered two things from their menu but I'm already hooked. Can't wait to try everything on their menu!

Peace U.

Yelp
Was craving chicken and waffles and this order hit the spot - crispy chicken and waffles. The service was great and the ice water was the tastiest I've ever had.

Jessika O.

Yelp
Why did I wait so long to try this place?! Will be coming back frequently to make up for lost time! The chicken is DELICIOUS. Generous slices of moist dark meat, lightly fried and drizzled with savory kewpie mayo. To the rice and chicken, I added seaweed salad, which was excellent, corn, sesame seeds, a yummy boiled egg, and tasty kimchi. All of the ingredients tasted fresh and complimented the chicken and sauce well. I thoroughly enjoyed the kewpie mayo fried chicken bowl and will 100% be ordering it again!

Melanie B.

Yelp
Their Korean fried chicken sandwich was AMAZING! I 10/10 recommend if you like spicy amazingness. Their service was great and super kind. Their ambiance was good for a street food place, mainly due to the hospitality we received from the lady working there. I live about a mile away from this place, and I cannot wait to come back!

Kenny A.

Yelp
I was here June 24th. I hope its not really closed! I don't live in SD but i was passing through. I got the Nashville bowl with corn and edamame. IT WAS SOO DELISH! The bowl was bigger than i thought it was going to be. Lot's of flavor on the chicken, not spicy at all. It was perfect! Thank you for a yummy meal!

Karen W.

Yelp
!!! It is YUM !!! The two bowls we tried today were recommendations from who was working at the time (Owner? Chef??). Excellent suggestions and it was difficult to choose a favorite. Both bowls had a nice amount of perfectly cooked chicken with the add ins and add ons. 1) Tonkatsu Kewpie with Edamame and Seaweed Salad on fluffy rice 1) Spicy Korean with Avocado Scoop and Kimchi on fluffy rice The veg certainly added a little welcome color and flair to the bowls. I'm not sure the avocado stood out taste wise. Spicy Korean had plenty of flavor, but hey it's So Cal and we loves us some Avocado at every meal!!! The combos were satisfying and excellent-no reason to order any differently. Both bowls were surprisingly filling and an excellent value. Super kind and friendly service topped off the total experience.

Ather D.

Yelp
10/10!! The chicken rice bowls are fresh and you can tell it's made with love! Owners were super patient and kind! Highly recommend.

Pacific B.

Yelp
This new spot in Pacific Beach, YumZab will have your taste buds going on a unique flavor adventure with their yummy sauces packed with so much flavor into each bite. The chicken was so delicious and tender and the garlic ginger rice was amazing. The most unique item I tried was the toast with coconut jam that you dip into a soysauce egg mixture. Not only was the food super delicious, but the two owners were so nice and friendly. I can't wait to go back!!

Ed K.

Yelp
The wings and sesame salad are very good and worth coming for. I expected more from the burger, but it wasn't too shabby. Coming back to try pike bowl and other chicken entrees. The couple running the joint are very personable. I would gladly give them my business again.

Andrea T.

Yelp
THE.BEST.SPOT. ! Their food is always on point, great price, love the people there, and they have great variety. The Korean corn dog and Honey Aioli Shrimp are my fave but I plan on going through the entire menu haha.

Riley K.

Yelp
This place is delicious! I got the honey teriyaki chicken and it was absolutely incredible. Food was ready very quickly and the service was kind and speedy. Definitely recommend

Wesley P.

Yelp
Delicious, fast, good price. Very much appreciated the vegetarian option variety. 5/5 for sure. Highly recommend!!

M J.

Yelp
Yum Zab has quickly become one of my go-to restaurants. It's hard to find chicken places that offer options for vegetarians and their soy chicken bowl is fried perfectly, crispy, and delicious. I get it delivered as it's a little out of the way for me, but the food is always delivered hot, fresh, and packaged with care. For the bowls, they have a wide selection of veggies to choose from, including Thai chili which gives great heat and flavor. Aside from chicken bowls, they have a variety of appetizers (veggie egg rolls are good), sandwiches, soups, etc. The Thai tea is noticeably good here. The menu has recently changed and they now offer all of their specialty bowls with crispy shrimp. I wish this was an option with their vegetarian chicken as well, as with the vegetarian chicken bowl you're limited to just the veggies and a handful of sauces to go on top. I also wish they added more veggies to the bowl and I've actually paid for extra veggies only to get the same small amount.. but I get it, the chicken is the star of the show and this is probably an easy request if I was actually in store vs ordering thru a delivery app. Anyway, just order from this place - you won't regret it

Andrew D.

Yelp
Happened along this place while out and about on Garnet Ave. Originally came for the poke, but their fried chicken options really stood out. Awesome food and service! The nicest couple run this shop and made the experience very warm and personal. They went above and beyond by offering complimentary water and even Thai tea! Come see for yourself how lovingly crafted this food can be. They are so grateful for all their patrons and it really shines through. My friend and I were so moved that we had to come back and take some nice pictures for them. If you're ever in the area, don't sleep on Yum Zab!

Adam J.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this place! It's tiny in size but mighty in flavor! Just tried their food for the first time today for lunch. Got the vegan chicken Thai Sweet chili Bowl and the Ghost Rider vegan chicken bowl. You can get them over rice, greens or half and half. We went with half and half for both bowls. The Thai Sweet chili Bowl had a nice sweetness but not too sweet, the greens are fresh, the chili sauce was tasty. You can add lots of other things into the bowl when you are ordering either in person or online. The online ordering is very convenient, we ordered while we were heading there and it was ready just as we were arriving. They have tables and chairs out on the sidewalk so you can eat there or take it elsewhere. The Ghost Rider was VERY spicy, they have a warning on their website but let me offer an additional warning here. It's not for the faint of heart, you must really like spicy! They also offered us free cups of ice water while we ate there. Excited to go back and try all the other yummy looking things on their menu. Highly recommend!

Dhakshin R.

Yelp
Awesome food and good prices! The spicy tamarind bowl is too dire for. Best food I have ever tasted in my life. If you don't give this place 5 stars then you're not a real foodie.

sharon b.

Yelp
Super good spot for a quick bite. We got the toasted sesame salad and the curry fried chicken bowl. They were both delicious and fresh. The owners are extremely nice. We will be back!

Nick A.

Yelp
We were looking for something light and fresh to eat late at night. The food was great tasting and reasonably priced. We tried the hainanese chicken and yum zab fried chicken and both were really good and satisfying

Laura P.

Yelp
Amazing! New favorite of mine in San Diego! Loved the flavors and service! I definitely will be visiting more and try more. Their curry was perfection.

Joshua C.

Yelp
Food is extremely high quality and insanely good! Fantastic hole in the wall and great place to use Doordash with.

Salo D.

Yelp
Delicious hole in the wall! One of the best and juiciest fried chicken sandos I've tried in town. Simple and delicious. Looking forward to going back and trying the wagyu sando and haianese chicken rice Friendly owners!

Nina E.

Yelp
We've picked up food here several times and it's delicious. We've tried appetizers, bowls and Korean Corn Dogs. They welcome feedback and are focused on your satisfaction. Happy to support this locally owned business.

Yelp
3 words for this little place, WOW, WOW AND WOW. I had the Seoul Nashville fried chicken bowl. One of the best chicken spicy bowls I've ever had. You need to try this!!!!! Well deserved 5 stars.

Matt I.

Yelp
Some of the best quality food in PB hands down. Every single item on the menu is worth trying.

Micah F.

Yelp
I was recommended this place by a buddy of mine and it definitely lived up to the hype. Great new spot along garnett with parking very close. Food was great and the service was even better. Thank you! Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Big fan of their food! Super tasty and not to heavy! Their lunch special is 10$ and it's great! Highly recommend! Super nice staff also! Great spot for a quick lunch in PB

Bernie G.

Yelp
This is a new place in Pacific Beach and wanted to try it. Wow the Buttermilk Popcorn Chicken is soooo good. I can eat it all day! Lol You have to try it.

Meredith F.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall Asian fusion restaurant. The Korean corn dog was a party in my mouth. The owners were super friendly and offered water without asking. It's more of a "to go" place as there is only one table outside, but we got lucky with the only spot. I would definitely return!

JohnLee J.

Yelp
Go. The service was great, super friendly. They offered my dog water. The food is insane. I got the honey teriyaki bowl and spicy Korean wings and it's mouthwatering good. Will most definitely be back !!!

Yelp
Yum Zab is a gem and must try in PB!! Their Hainanese chicken bowl is 10/10. The chicken is cooked to perfection and their sauce is jam packed with all the garlic goodness and flavor. They also include a side of broth that complements the dish so well and leaves your tummy feeling all sorts of warm & comforted! Not only is their food amazing but so is their service! The 2 owners are such a delightful duo and some of the kindest people. They're genuinely appreciative of all their customers and you can sense their dedication to providing the best service and food in town. If you find yourself in PB and crave a delicious and flavorful meal, do yourself a favor and come here - you won't be disappointed!
