‘Top Chef’ Alum Opens Austin Restaurant in New H-E-B Food Hall - Eater Austin

"Another new H-E-B restaurant, the Japanese spot focuses on breaded or grilled meat and vegetable skewers, with chicken, beef, shrimp, or vegetables. The skewers can be placed atop rice, noodle, and salad bowls, or available a la carte. There are also potstickers and a curry bowl." - Nadia Chaudhury

For the price, the food is pretty good, although I’ve only had a couple of things here. The potstickers are probably my go to. I would put this on par with panda, which is not bad.

Is this a joke? Even adding extra sauce to make it decent would have been $1.50. The protein is tiny and chewy. The vegetables don't have flavor. The rice was good. For $13 after tax?

This stall makes HEB’s food court worth going whenever I visit the area. The skewers (Kushikatsu) are fantastic, but I personally enjoy their Curry Katsu Bowl the most! Add an order of potstickers and it’ll hit it right on the spot. Not to mention, it’s super cheap and fresh. Must recommend!

I go here about once a week and I love it! To all the people giving this place low reviews I would say two things: 1) it seems like a lot of people are buying their premade bowls instead of their made to order bowls. The premade are good when you're in a hurry but it's much better right off the grill. 2) I would agree that the portions are pretty skimpy on the skewers (they are very reasonably priced, so I'm not mad at it). What I always do is get their fried rice and then get the Brisket from True Texas BBQ in the food court and make some brisket fried rice. I don't order their sushi but a lot of other people do and they love it.

It was conveniently located at H.E.B so I gave it a try. The kabobs chicken kabobs where dry and the fried rice wasostly greasy rice with speks of veggies and egg. I guess $10 you should expect less. Next time I'll just get a frozen pizza. I don't like to waste food, but this is very hard to stomach🤮

Quantity is nice for the price. Enjoyed the curry katsu chicken. However, for some reason this food court at HEB only uses Favor, meaning delivery only and no pick-up option! I'd much rather pick-up because the delivery took over an hour and an item was missing. If the restaurant simply stapled the bag closed then the delivery driver could have at least been ruled out.

I have been anxious to visit the H-E-B Mueller Main Strest "food hall" ever since I heard it was opening. I got a great sandwich from The Meltery (reviewed separately) for my lunch and I wanted Japanese food for dinner. My original intent was to get some skewers, but when I saw the Japanese curry on the menu, I quickly change my mind. I'm glad I did and I want to go back to try various skewers! As soon as I opened the container with the Japanese curry, my mind flashback to when I lived & worked in Tokyo for year and would walk by the curry shops and smell that inviting aroma. I have not found Japanese curry available at very many places in Austin, so I was anxious to give this one a try. They gave a generous portion of fried chicken cutlet and the curry sauce along with a bed of rice and sushi-style pickled ginger. (Very minor point here. I'm always used to a different style of pickled ginger and fortunately had a jar in my refrigerator from when I have made Japanese curry at home. So, that was a plus for this excellent dish!) Despite the curry sitting out for a while and reheated in the microwave at home, the chicken was still crispy and the curry sauce had an excellent flavor. I also ordered the 6 gyoza appetizer (potstickers) to go and after a quick reheat they were excellent with the dipping sauce. I was very appreciative that they were not deep fried, but panfried as is typical In Japanese restaurants. The only negative I could think of from my experience is that this H-E-B is quite far from my home, but I know I'll be making a return trip soon try out more of the restaurants and invite some friends along with me.

I've been back here twice for a quick lunch and I really enjoy this spot. The skewers are super tasty and you can get them over rice (white or fried) or noodles. The portion size is also great. Overall, just great flavors, super simple ordering process and friendly staff

Yelp
Fast-food, in grocery store restaurant that offers quick meals. My food was overcooked and hard to chew.

Yelp
This place has potential to be a great Japanese curry place, but it fails in several key (but easy to fix!) areas: 1. The curry is too watery. The flavor profile is really good and authentic but the curry itself needs to be thicker so it still tastes like something when mixed with the rice and isn't so runny. 2. They don't give enough curry. I barely had enough curry to dip my chicken in (think dipping like you would ketchup on a fry), much less mix with my rice. Had to leave a good third of the rice unfinished. The curry should have filled to the top of the tray rather than just a quarter-inch layer. 3. They use the wrong ginger. They gave the white pickled ginger that pairs with sushi rather than the pink pickled ginger that actually goes with curry. I really want to like this place; the curry flavor here comes the closest to authentic curry that I've found in Austin. And the problems are easy to fix, so I hope they do. Then I will gladly drive across Austin regularly to eat here!

Yelp
The food was way to sweet and salty at the same time. It all had the same flavor and that was not good...sorry. not enough vegetables at all. There were only tiny slivers of carrots and onions. Same with the cabbage. The skewers also had the same overpowering sweet flavor and were dry. I could not eat the noodles so I gave them to my son and he didn't like them either. He is 28 and not a picky eater at all. The pork pot stickers and shrimp skewers were the only 4/5 rating. Sorry but I will not ever be eating there again. For the money I spent it was not worth it.

Yelp
Fun little spot at the Mueller HEB! It's fun to watch them prep the food. Easy kiosk ordering system.

Yelp
Really good chicken yakisoba. One of the best in the city- highly recommended to you. Everything on the menu is good & the staff are very friendly. Now I'm hungry, going to order right now. Kid friendly also-,with kid sized bowls. Yakisoba is one of my favourite foods! The Japanese curry bowl is also good.

Yelp
Not your average fried rice but most definitely tasty! I had the fried rice bowl with no veggies and chicken skewers..the sauce on the chicken was delicious. Very fresh, came out quickly and the ordering process is so simple.

Yelp
I have heard about the HEB food court and wanted to try it and they offerings it has is above my expectations. My wife wanted to try the Yakisoba style noodles which this place has and they tasted amazing. The sauce and veggies were very tasty. A special mention that noodles had perfectly balanced taste and even my kids who don't eat spicy ate it. Their edamame pot stickers were also a hit among us. Will definitely visit again and highly recommend it.

Yelp
I do my grocery shopping at Meuller HEB and I love I can pick up dinner on my way out. This has been one of my favorite meals from the foodhall line up. Fried rice with fried chicken skewers. Came with some sauces to drizzle on top. Lots of good flavors without being too salty.

Yelp
This is legit Japanese food, not one of those fusion places that serve sushi and orange chicken at the same time. I ordered curry with chicken Katsu, absolutely delicious and authentic. I can't wait to try their Yakisoba next time! Ordering was contactless and all on the tablet at the counter, which was thoughtful and convenient during this time. You get a text when your order is ready, I waited about 10 minutes while shopping at HEB.

Yelp
This place is sort of a joke. The menu includes sushi and orange chicken, contrary to what the reviewer wrote. The fried rice was short on vegetables and flavor. The yakisoba was awful -- it is easy to better at home. The "restaurant" is inside the HEB, which should have warned us. I am strongly suspicious that some of the good reviews are insider jobs. Don't bother going here -- just don't bother!

Yelp
My daughter wanted a noodle bowl when we were in the Mueller area. This came up as an option so we checked it out. It took us a minute to realize Yumai was located inside the Mueller HEB. I'm glad we stopped in - my daughter opted for a delicious (and large) kid's chicken fried rice bowl instead of the noodles...and I was able to get a sliced brisket stuffed potato from the nearby barbeque stand. We'll be back!

Yelp
Good Japanese curry, but nothing special. The gyoza are great and the sauce with it had a nice spice to it.

Yelp
Tried the curry bowl and the kids noodle bowl. The curry does not come with a spicy option so I thought it was a little bland, the chicken was just ok and did not come with the traditional pickled radish which I love. The noodles were very flavorful and came in such a big portion it might as well have been an adult size. Definitely a decent meal for the price.

Yelp
The Orange Chicken was absolutely horrible. Putting two slices of orange in does not make something "orange chicken." Absolutely no sauce. Almost entirely a bowl of rice with some chicken nugget pieces.
