Yum Review - Downtown LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Located inside Holy Basil in Downtown, Yum is an excellent Thai pop-up serving Bangkok-style street food. There isn't a set schedule or menu, so just do what we do at this point and stalk their Instagram and prepare yourself for an extraordinary meal. From raw blue crab soaked in fish sauce to fermented branzino to white mushrooms in a pickled bean curd, Yum’s food is spicy, pungent, and unabashedly original." - Brant Cox

難吃!非常失望!Huge disappointment. Finally came to Yumcha after reading positive reviews about the place. May be my expectations were too high. The place where Yumcha is, The Commons, is a kind of contemporary food mall housing more artisan eateries. The concept is interesting. On finding out Yumcha it was a surprise. It turns out it’s a rundown fast food shop with a high sounding concept, and running by two clueless employees who don’t care much about customers or food. They don’t seem to care. As for the food, I ordered their signature BBQ Pork Noodles, Siu long bao and an Oolong tea. The signature bbq pork is dry. Overcooked. It was so dry that I only finished 2 of the 6 pieces. They may look good in photos, but they are so dry. The fried egg is over cooked too. The noodles, warmish, nothing special. The Siu long bao are not so bad. At least they still hold the hot broth after being reheated. But they don’t taste fresh. I was imagining an artisan eatery with a passionate entrepreneur bringing the taste of Hong Kong to Bangkok. Instead I found an inauthentic fast food joint that use cheap labor to churn out soulless products. Not worth my effort.

The Charsiu pork in my noodles is freaking sweet. The noodles itself is super duper salty yikes. I think this restaurant better recheck their quality and taste again. I could not finish it even I was so hungry.

A bit over due on the review but here it is on Yumcha at The Common Saladaeng. Super good everything with very detailed taste profile on their bbq pork and truly made me miss Hong Kong! My personal fav is the Xiao Long Bao and the Fried Pork and Shrimp Dumplings 🤤

I would recommend their Hargow that is on par with higher end restaurants. Seasoning of Chasiu resembles that of Hong Kong, but its tenderness depends on the cut. The lean cut can be quite rough (probably a 3 stars) but the fattier cut is good. Loved the vibe at the Commons. Live music.

Yumcha is very yum. If you have a craving for affordable but delicious dim sum and authentic Hong Kong influenced dishes, here is the place to go. The staff are really helpful and insightful. I tried almost all of their dishes and my highlight would be the chili oil wontons! So good! The owner is from Hong Kong so you can’t go wrong. I also love their lunch set, which is perfect if you’re on a pinch.

Love their egg custard buns/bao. They have fried and steamed versions. The dough is soft and fluffy and the salted egg filling is delicious. Be a bit careful though because they’re a little hot and the custard oozes out very fast! 🥚🧨

Consistently high quality dim sum. Prices are reasonable & food comes quickly. If you like the Commons , then definitely give this a try.

So much disappointed, ordered signature soy chili sauce Hong Kong style BBQ pork noodle (staff claimed spicy) but tasted so salty, the bbq pork was so sweet. The only fried shrimp ball was eatable, other menu 😒😏 no comment
