Bonchon Opens Inside the Mall of America | Eater Twin Cities

"I see Southdale will get a new Yumi location early in 2020 from the owners of Agra Culture, Sotarol, La Grolla and Yogurt Lab; this will be the third Yumi, joining the original in Excelsior, with another Yumi planned for St. Paul in November." - Joy Summers

Google
Service was great, food was ok. Had high hopes for the calamari. The Hot Knight roll was a bit spicier than expected, with the slices almost too big to put on my mouth. Had a unique sake with my meal as well. Would try again but am not in a rush.

Had been looking forward to come eat here for a while and will not be coming back. Ordered a bit of everything to try on the menu and it was all underwhelming. The sticky wings were dry and lacked any flavor besides the sauce they were coated in. The veggie fried rice was also really dry and not enjoyable. The negitoro the tuna had no fattyness in it. Seaweed salad was 20-30% seaweed and rest a motley of veggies. Only decent things were the miso soup and the veggie udon soup. Broth actually had some flavor. Overall disappointing and won’t be coming back. Your typical mid Japanese restaurant disguised as a high end spot.

Google
FANTASTIC. Quick and helpful service and clean atmosphere. Discovered my favorite sushi roll I have had to date. The Titanic Yumi Roll was phenomenal. If you like cilantro and guacamole, you NEED to try this roll. Portions on rolls are LARGE and three rolls for two people were more than enough. Do not be discouraged by the price. One app and two rolls will leave you FULL. Our waiter was prompt and very polite and helpful and atmosphere was clean and modern. We went later on a Friday and we’re seated immediately. Would highly recommend. For the price, I actually preferred this over Billy Sushi.

Google
So I tried their happy hour, I started off with a seaweed salad. Which is pretty hard to get wrong. I enjoyed it but it was on a bed of lettuce so made it look like you're getting more. Wings were a good size and were flavorful. Tempura shrimp came with a lot of veggies that were overly breaded to my liking. The shrimp was cleaned out, so that helped. But I wasn't the biggest fan of it. The rolls are a nice size but the rolls I got were okay. The spice tuna was a solid choice but I don't think I would be the happy hour sushi again.

Google
Had a great dinner at this restaurant which recently opened. Our server was very prompt and friendly and the place wasn't too busy. Sushi was very fresh with generous fish portion sizes especially the tuna sashimi. Good drink selection of wines by the glass, beers, and specialty drinks plus sake and more (the drink menu is a separate sheet of paper front and back with options). Would definitely come back. My only gripe is the soy sauce dishes are too shallow and small.

Google
Stopped in without a reservation at 6:30 on a Friday, no table but plenty of room at the bar. It was busy but not noisy and even though they had tvs behind the bar, volume was down. Jonatan the bartender was friendly without being intrusive and offered suggestions which we took a couple and they did not disappoint. The titanic roll was topped with guacamole which oddly worked and we loved it. The crispy rice spicy tuna app was perfectly cooked and ample tuna on top. Both were very fresh and had good quality fish. Calamari although well cooked with a tasty dipping sauce isn’t something I think I’d order again because the menu had lots of other options. We shared two apps and a roll and that was plenty for us. We had the Hanami Spritz and Big in Japan cocktails..forgot the photo but they were very refreshing. Definitely will go back. You cannot enter the restaurant from the mall, you have to enter off of parking lot, it’s between Macy’s and Lifetime Fitness.

Google
First time trying this place. I enjoyed everything that we ate. We had the agedashi tofu, shrimp fried rice, 214 roll and the dragon lover roll, I think that's what it is called. The food was really good! And the service was great, given that the bartender had to also take care of the tables around us and the bar! He was great though and so were the other staff. I would recommend this place for a romantic evening or just for drinks!

Kris K.

Google
Fairly pricey but decent quality. Apps were hot and tasty. Rolls were technically sound. Tight and cut evenly. Atmosphere is pretty decent, good mix between casual bar and upscale sushi place. The 2-14 roll was our favorite.

Yelp
I been to many time since I live closed by. The service was great. Food is okay, nothing really wow for us. Location is nice, right outside by the mall and many stores near by.

Yelp
I've been to Yumi a couple times now and if you're looking for a bit scaled up sushi experience, you've come to the right place. The place is cozy with a beautiful menu and everything is served with an attention to detail. My cocktail the last time even came in a take-out box... this was a bit of an odd choice if not an instant meme. Expect higher prices but maybe higher quality? Definitely good for a fancy date night or a special event.

Yelp
Instaworthy Restaurant and Food! Excellent and friendly service, but we do pay a pretty penny for the beautiful space and tasty food with gorgeous presentation. Absolutely date worthy. Parking was plentiful but difficult to get a nearby spot, and no access to the mall. HAMACHI KAMA (4/5) a great app to share if you like grilled fish. Not the best version I've had, but it was good. MISO SOUP (3/5) standard FIRECRACKER ROLL (4/5) menu says it's spicy, but only a level 1 of 10 spicy. 8 gigantic pieces.

Yelp
I had the best meal here! We shared several appetizers and the sweet asian sticky wings deserve a call out -- they were amazing!! The sushi rolls are a large fresh portion and will fill you up. The salmon teriyaki entree was perfectly cooked and came with a generous portion of rice and veggies. Desert mochi was good, but most likely wouldn't order next time. We dined here on a slow Tuesday night, but the service was slower than I would have expected. The lighting is dimmed, but not dark creating a calming atmosphere!!

Yelp
After doing a little shopping we stopped in yesterday for a bite to eat. Maura was wonderful, very friendly, knowledge of the menu off the top of her head, and also kept checking in on us to get anything that we needed. The restaurant is very clean, bright, and spacious. There is a large free parking lot just outside in front. I really enjoyed the soft shell crab and the firecracker roll. Although I was advised the rolls are pretty big, I am definitely getting two next time we visit!

Yelp
We were at Lifetime Fitness Edina, and while faced with a baffling assortment of choices in the Southdale/Galleria area we easily choose an old favorite, Yumi Edina. The reason for this decision is simple: innovative offerings, perfectly prepared. With the menu comes a load of innovation. Philly Roll? Yes. Your usual and unusual rolls and Sashimi await you, with the polish and precision you'd expect at an Edina eating venue. Edina pricing too. Precise service, and a great atmosphere bring the experience home!

Yelp
I came here for my birthday and we had an amazing time. first off, the waitress we had was fun and we all really enjoyed them. I messed up my reservation and they were very kind and helped fix the situation quickly and easily! The inside is gorgeous! From the decor to the barstools, we were all quite impressed. The food was GREAT. We had the spicy tuna on crispy rice and it was delicious and perfect amount of spice & crunch. I had the salmon, tuna, salmon belly and fatty yellow tail and it was all absolutely amazing. not fishy in the slightest. My friends all got different rolls and they were all very happy with them. We all agreed that the food was amazing. Their rolls are huge and are a good deal in my opinion! I got the For here or to go? cocktail and it was good! It was quite strong but it came in an adorable to go container! Overall i would suggest this place!

Yelp
We walked in and there was a 15 min wait, which we were okay with. Then ppl with reservations started to show so it took a bit longer, we didnt mind it. They had to eventually stop taking walk ins but since we were there already, we were safe. We finally got a table maybe 30-40 min after. Our server was sweet. We ordered the tiger roll, crunchy roll, and honeymoon roll. All were fantastic. You can tell cheap sushi from pricier sushi. These definitely hit the spot. My favorite would be the tiger roll! We didnt get any appetizers because we were already drinking before we got there. Will come again next time. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is because I didnt order enough food to rate it 5 stars. Will do next time!

Yelp
I've been here twice now. My first experience for restaurant week, and today for happy hour with a friend. Both times were exceptional experiences. The service is impeccable, and the ambiance is inviting, modern, and adorable. The food blew me away for restaurant week, but the lychee martini steals the show. I came back and asked if it had been a special, and was delighted that they were able to make it for me again. Ordering from the happy hour menu, the gyoza was absolutely wonderful! We got the crunchy roll and Philly roll too. The crunchy roll was superior for sure, the Philly roll was satisfying as well. But the star of the show was the gyoza tonight. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned well.

Yelp
This place was great! We had the nicest server and our food came quick. Really cute seating, loved the fun seats at the bar. We loved the happy hour! We ordered gyoza, California roll and the veggie special (both rolls with soy paper). They were huge and absolutely delicious! I would love to see more vegan sushi options in Minnesota, we just don't have enough. Please make more options and include sweet potatoes, YUM!
google avatar

Yelp
This was the best sushi roll I've had in a long time. It was really filling and delicious!! Also SO many menu options!! The waitress we had was very knowledgeable on the specific ingredients and friendly. She also put the roll in as "thin cut" and I would recommend everyone do that because I can't imagine the size of the normal cut if these are "thin cut"

Yelp
So good! We stuck with drinks and appetizers and left oh so happy. Service was amazing. Provided suggestions on food and I decided to try Sake for the first time and our server helped me find the perfect one. Beautiful interior, very fresh, clean and inviting. This was more than a meal- it was a great experience and we will for sure be back to try more. Bob Marley roll isn't on the menu and was a great start. Sweet, savory and a bit of spice. The calamari was some of the best I've had. The tempura was so nice and thin. Everything was superb!

Yelp
Vas is awesome server . . Comic relief welcome! Cool sushi spot with many choices rolls etc. I never remember what I ate because I love all of it! Take a trip!

Yelp
Nearly the best sushi in town. TLDR: order the Marianne roll, Mexican roll and crispy rice tuna bites to split. You'll thank me later. I've never in my life seen a sushi roll as big as these. The prices are completely reasonable considering the portion sizes. The fish is so fresh and the combination of the jalapeño, cilantro and sauces on the rolls make them spectacular. They have the BEST crispy rice tuna I've ever had (even better than Billy sushi in my opinion). I'm not totally sold on their signature cocktails, as I've tried quite a few of them and they don't quite do it for my taste pallet. They also seem to inconsistently come in a very basic water glass and sometimes come in a trendy themed glass. I'm always shocked to hear people don't know this place exists. And if they do, they think it is the same as the sushi restaurant inside of Lifetime Fitness -- just next door. I wish, and think they'd do great business, if they were open for lunch. With the ton of businesses surrounding-- I for one would stop in and also order delivery. It is easy to meet friends here and get a reservation. I'm just shocked more people don't know about this hidden gem!

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere. Forgot we were in a mall. Decent happy hour, really enjoyed the crunchy roll. Not a lot of alcohol free drink options or mocktails. Ample parking.

Yelp
We had an amazing family dinner at Yumi! Vas was our server and she knocked it out of the park! We had such a delightful experience. We were greeted and seated right away. We had ample table space and legroom. The kids had so many options with the affordable bento box! The sake selection is the best in the city! I chose the "draft sake," it was excellent! I also got the sushi platter which came with so many deliciously crafted fish options. I love sushi/sashimi and they even surprised me with some options I haven't tried before. My husband had the Kobe beef and it was so flavorful and hit the spot! Their miso was beyond flavorful and delicious. I highly suggest this for any meal you need and any party size as they have seating for everyone. The space is quiet, beautiful and steps from so much entertainment it's worth the trip for any day of the week! And ask for Vas! She's the best in the business!

Yelp
I went for the winter restaurant week menu. This is $30 per person & each person picked one item from each course. What we got: Starters: They have six options to choose from and a variety of good choices. Edamame - You can pick from regular or spicy. We went spicy and yes it did have a quite a kick! They toss it in a spicy chili sauce which I really enjoyed. If you like spicy this is for you - if not go with the regular which is steamed & finished w/ a touch of salt. Gyoza - Fried Japanese pork dumplings. These were really crispy on the outside and delicious. They came with a side of soy for your dipping pleasure! These were so yummy! The Entrée part of the menu is really awesome. I love sushi so that's what we decided on, but they also had Beef & Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Udon Noodles for the non-sushi eaters. With 8 options to choose from we had our server help us narrow it down. Marianne Roll - This was definitely the favorite! Made w/ shrimp tempura, snow crab, jalapeno, cilantro, avocado, tempura flakes, wrapped in soy paper & topped w/ honeymoon & eel sauce. This came with 10 pieces. I really liked this roll! California roll & spicy Tuna Role - This option comes with two rolls. * California: Snow crab, avocado, masago, and cucumber, topped with sesame seeds - 8 pieces * Spicy Tuna Roll - Spicy yellowfin tuna, gobo, lettuce, cucumber, and avocado - 6 pieces The dessert menu gave various choices of Mochi or Ice Cream! I absolutely love Mochi, so we shared green tea and mango. If you want, you can also get chocolate drizzle over these! This was a great restaurant week experience & the service was awesome. Outside of the restaurant week menu we did order a couple of drinks including the Tokyo 75 - a play on the French 75 with sparking sake. They have tons of cocktails, sake, Japanese Whisky, and wine to choose from! Definitely add them to your restaurant week list & make a reservation soon

Yelp
The food here was absolutely amazing and a great place for a date night. I was very impressed by the guest service and how accommodating all the staff were but more specifically, Meg. She was such a sweet server to my guest and I. If you are looking for a 10/10 sushi restaurant in edina, this is your place.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious. Our server was attentive and nice. The ambiance was very sleek and vibey. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Yumi is a classic. Everything is fresh and the service is friendly and prompt. I ALWAYS order the agedashi tofu and rock shrimp to start. We typically order a variety of rolls and sashimi. I've never been disappointed with anything I've had at Yumi. The interior isn't anything super special and their patio doesn't offer any shade. However the sushi is so good you don't really care about where you're eating but more about what you're eating. Parking is plenty as Yumi is located in the Southdale Mall.
google avatar

Kathleen K.

Yelp
Yumi is a nice sushi restaurant. The food is inventive and fresh. Prices on the sushi rolls often exceed $20 (the Tiger Roll was $25.95) but the portions are large. Some roll portions are too big to fit in your mouth. Then you are left trying to split a piece with chopsticks. Tiger Roll - very good, more crab would be better Soft-shell crab, spicy tuna, gobo, wrapped with salmon and freshwater eel, topped with spicy mayo, eel sauce, and sesame seeds (8pc) Winter Roll - very good Salmon, yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, avocado, masago, spicy mayo, wrapped with tempura flakes, topped with eel sauce (8pc) Rainbow Roll - very good Snow crab, avocado, cucumber, wrapped with five kinds of chef's choice fish (8pc) Bob Marley Roll - it was a special and was also very good All we have ever eaten here is the sushi. Other menu items look good too. Service was good. A 4.5% surcharge is added to the bill.

Yelp
Definitely some of the best sushi we've had since being in MN. Not cheap, but good. The rolls are huge so it's kind of weird because they're not one-bite like sushi should be, but for the price I'm glad they're large. Our server was absolutely fantastic. Atmosphere was great. We tried the Bob Marley roll (not on the menu, our server told us some special rolls when we sat down). The Bob Marley roll was fantastic, tamago was good, salmon toro was super tender as expected, and the futo maki was great. Drinks were solid but didn't blow me away. My one big complaint: they include a "mandate compliance surcharge." This made sense when there were statewide pandemic mandates in effect, but to my knowledge, they're all long gone. So what's this charge for?! (It is NOT gratuity). I emailed them to ask about this because it feels like a ripoff/bogus charge, and did not get a response to two emails. Great sushi and environment! We were super happy. Just a bit salty about the bogus extra charge.
google avatar

Destiny H.

Yelp
I love Yumi's and this is the first time I checked out the Edina location. It's was nice and bright and not too loud. Our server was super helpful with our menu questions and consistently checked up on us. The spicy edamame was super spicy so make sure your sharing with a group. The rolls are always so yummy and fresh!

Sophia E.

Yelp
I love the sushi at Yumi but it's cut too big. I wish the rolls were more bite sized. The ambiance is great and so is the service. The sushi is amazing too
google avatar

Shela U.

Yelp
It was an okay experience overall. The food was decent, though not the best sushi I've had in Minnesota or the area. The decor was cute, even if the music choice felt a bit off. The service was great, and our waitress was lovely. However, I was disappointed when they added a 4.5% surcharge at the end without any explanation. While I understand costs can change, it would have been better to include that in the menu prices rather than as a surprise fee. This left me feeling a bit uneasy, and it might be a dealbreaker for returning. Price per person: $20-30. On the plus side, there's plenty of free parking in the lot.

Yelp
I visited Yumi for my birthday on a Tuesday around 5pm. It wasn't busy at all and we got a seat right away. I went with a friend and we had already planned what to get so ordering was easy. The food didn't take an extremely long amount of time, the amount of time expected for the kind of order we had. We got the Regular Sashimi Platter (5 types of fish, 4 pieces of each) and the Tonka roll (yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, salmon, red snapper, Snow White tuna, cilantro, jalapeño, avocado, all wrapped in soy paper and topped with wasabi Mayo, ponzu sauce and chili oil). I really enjoyed the maki roll, it had such an interesting flavor. It was huuuuuge, so a little hard to eat in one bite but made it work. The Sashimi was ok. We never received the side of rice or miso soup so it was a little lacking and three of the fish weren't very good (in my opinion) but the salmon was good. It's not something I would order again but if you are a big fan of raw fish then I'd recommend it.
google avatar

Tyra L.

Yelp
I spotted Yumi from the window of our pediatrician on baby's fist visit. I tried to make my husband take me right away but they weren't open until 4pm. I had to wait a few more days but finally after 9 or 10 long months I got my sushi fix. We ordered for pickup so I can only speak to the food. I can safely say it was delicious, and hit the spot. They have several creative rolls, and the fish tasted nice and fresh. I noticed they also have a happy hour, so we will be back soon!! The Winter roll was my favorite and was stuffed with tons of fish!
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
This restaurant is located right outside of Southdale Mall. Service was great! The server was really attentive and made sure we were always doing good. Food wise is not authentic as I would have wished for it to be. The miso soup with the entrees are super salty and the sashimi was sliced in huge slices. If you're looking to get the bang for your bucks and don't care too much of quality I would say to go here because the portion size are pretty big. We found the Bob Marley roll through reviews and decided to try it, if you like your rolls with lots of sauce then you'll like this. It has a kick to it as well, but too saucy for me. The shrimp tempura udon soup only comes with 2 shrimp with a ton of tempura veggies, not sure if it's the batter they use or what but I felt like my mouth was full of oil after eating it. Sadly the sashimi didn't taste fresh at all.

Yelp
Ok, I love a lot of places, but wow I really love this one. I've walked past this place dozens of times but never made it inside, but FINALLY we did, and I'm SO happy. It was amazing. By far the best sushi in MN I've ever had, along with some of the best Japanese food I've had in general. The service was fantastic, beyond kid-friendly & accommodating. I enjoyed every single bite and likely will not attend Kona for a LONG, LONG time. Go here, you will not regret it. Recommend: You absolutely must get the chicken udon noodles & the Marianne roll (not pictured but literally incredible). Homemade & fresh taste like any other. We also ordered the edamame & gyoza. Both were great portion appetizers & tasty.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
We enjoyed the New Zealand Green Mussels and the Firecracker Roll. Both were fresh. The Firecracker Roll was perfectly crunchy on the outside and flavorful inside. My only drawback was the mysterious "service charge" on the bill when you're already paying premium pricing. $9 for a single tap beer with service charge, tax & tip makes it the most for 2 beers in a while. Our service was awesome. We will come back, but have the alcoholic beverages before or after our meal.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Solid 4/5 star restaurant. I've been here a few times. Depending on when you go it can get busy ( e.g. weekend evening). Pretty trendy in appearance. They have tables, booths, bar, and sushi bar seating. My husband says the sake is really good but I have yet to try it. The rolls are quite delicious but a little over priced - $22-25 for the 10 piece specialty rolls. Seems pretty on par for most Edina restaurants. We usually order off the menu, but opted to try the special "sunset roll" of the day(?) last week which was really good and had a ton of fresh tasting fish. Overall, you may be able to find similar sushi restaurants for slightly lower prices around the Twin Cities but I'll likely continue to go back.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Strong sushi house. Definitely ask the waitstaff for their recommendations - most of the time they aren't on the menu. Ambiance is hopping, so definitely get a reservation (or get there early).
google avatar

Carrie W.

Yelp
First time here. We were meeting our friends sitting inside. We decided to move outside and the waiters were fighting over a one glass of wine check. Our waiter outside was fabulous Jonathon. He suggested fun rolls and drinks. I had a margarita with the lime turned inside out and the shot of tequila was in that. Then he suggested a Bob Marley roll that is not on the menu which was fab. We had the honeymoon roll loved it. We had the spicy edamame we had too much gooey sauce on it. We also had the chicken wings that I enjoyed. I will not go back the food was not that great.
google avatar

Yana A.

Yelp
Came here for a dinner date & was absolutely amazed. The service was great, the food was delicious, and the fish in the rolls tasted extremely fresh. The interior & attention to detail was beautiful. As well as their clever cocktail! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Environment is nice and staff is friendly. I ordered a couple rolls and a starter. It was a great amount of food. The price is a bit on the steeper side but definitely tasty and well made. The sushi was fresh. The sauces are a bit on the salty side, so if you are sensitive to that, asking for a less sodium option would probably be a good idea. Otherwise, I'd return but not often due to the higher prices.
google avatar

Connie D.

Yelp
It pains me to say that this is my least favorite Yumi location out of their 3 (St. Paul is my favorite). I've order the same items at all 3 locations and this one was by far the most disappointing. My go-tos are usually the Regular Sashimi platter and Mexican roll. Here, the sashimi slices are just as generous as the other locations, but the quality was far below the other two. The fish was not fresh, and I honestly had a hard time finishing my share of the meal. The location is new and beautiful and the interior boasts the same decor as the other locations. Our server was attentive and friendly. She made sure our waters were filled and answered any questions we had. However, coming here on a Friday evening to find that it was not busy and many workers just standing around was a bit surprising. Yumi St. Paul is one of my favorite sushi spots, but it is really sad to see the same quality of fish is not the same across locations.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I went here for restaurant week last night and didn't even make it to the entree round before something we either ate or drank sent us rushing to the restrooms to send it all back up. Maybe stick to the sushi and avoid the appetizers.
google avatar

Cody M.

Yelp
Best place for sushi in Minnesota I'm a spicy roll kinda guy they was all good I ordered 3 rolls double Dragon was my favorite out of the three price was up there but we'll worth it this is a great place to take someone one a date it was quite and peaceful
google avatar

Phet P.

Yelp
Best Asian wings I've ever have super crunchy and sticky on the outside and super juicy on the inside, everything we had was amazing down to the salad. Service was great she had a great sense of humor. Will definitely be back again, best food and sushi hands down definitely recommend.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Wow we spent 100$ but I left full and very happy! My wife enjoyed her dish! I don't remember what she got! ! I got one of their signature rolls and some unagi! OMG! Was very good! The service was very good! Will be back once we're in the area! Place was new but very clean and staff was well organized!

Yelp
This was our 4th time at Yumi. Each time the sushi and service has been spot on. For this reason it has now become our regular sushi place.

Yelp
I should preface this review by stating: I'm a bit of a sushi snob. So much so that I've taken to making my own nigiri and handrolls at home because I haven't found that perfect sushi spot in the Twin Cities. Gorgeous fish, delicate rice, subtle but flavorful composition. (Yes, I know I sound gross, I also want to punch myself in the face.) While not reaching those heights, Yumi is still quite good, and particularly ideal for those who prefer complex rolls but with quality fish. I'm more of a purist so I went with a selection of nigiri for my meal as well as the tuna crispy rice appetizer. The crispy rice app was my favorite thing, partially because it's one of those dishes that's just yummy and comforting. Would definitely come back and just order this for a meal. The nigiri were decent, but I wouldn't say the fish was fantastic. Definitely fresh, but the flavors were muted. Also, the shari (rice) was cold and too tightly packed. We ordered the rock shrimp and calamari apps and everyone liked both, but the rock shrimp was voted as the better dish. Service was definitely solid for a busy Friday night. Which brings me to a tip: make reservations if you can. This place gets seriously busy on weekends. We went for an early 5:30 pm dinner on a Friday and they were already busy. Within about a half hour I'd say the restaurant was full. A nice, dependable sushi place I will definitely return to (especially before seeing a movie at the nearby AMC), but not the golden unicorn I'm looking for.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere Friendly & knowledgeable service! Highly highly recommend getting any salmon dish here. Such a clean bite into a slightly fatty fish! Get the New Zealand Green Mussels they're absolutely delicious. Enjoy!

Yelp
This is a spectacular Sushi restaurant. You pay for what you get - meaning high quality is a bit more expensive. Cant go wrong here.

Yelp
Breaks my heart to downgrade this review. I was so excited when this location opened, bringing upscale sushi to the masses in an approachable place and at reasonable price. This restaurant still has a lot to offer, if you stick to the basics. But there are too many gotchas that detract from the overall experience. GOOD: Sushi is still the star here, and if you stick with just that you really can't go wrong. The fish here is almost always of very good quality (even by the high standards of the twin cities sushi scene), though the negi toro maki -- while still a great value for toro fish -- can sometimes be uneven. Overall, fantastic sushi, and at a great location and price. MEH: The wheels drop off with the rest of the menu, which beyond sushi becomes highly uneven. The agedashi tofu is quite good. But the ramen broth is not quite right. And the "tako su" is an overly rustic take on ocotopus sunomono (they should really title this item better on the menu). I strongly recommend that new diners at this restaurant stick to the mostly excellent sushi. BAD: Like many restaurants in the age of COVID, Yumi sticks diners with a "service fee." But unlike at other restaurants, there is no disclaimer that this fee is meant to cover the cost of paying employees a living wage. So I am left with no idea if this extra charge is for a good cause, or just a cash grab. But even worse, pricing for bar liquor is outright fraudulent. This is new and very alarming. When I ordered a shot of whiskey the other night without ice, I was charged a "neat" charge on my bill. The waitress confirmed that they charge extra for foregoing ice. I asked if there would also be an extra charge if I requested an ice cube, and she confirmed there would be! (A "rocks" charge.) None of this is noted on the drinks menu, and is very deceptive behavior. Charging more for an item than is listed on the menu without prior warning is FRAUD. I asked the waitress why they do this, and she tried to convince me that this practice is "traditional." OK, yeah... I've drank whiskey all over the world, including in Japan, and there is no such thing as charging for adding or foregoing ice. Nobody does this. Shame on you. All of this is too bad, because Yumi has an excellent Japanese whisky menu. But now I'm hesitant to ever drink there again. I will return to Yumi again when they return to honest pricing. They owe their diners an apology.
